381  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Creating off line cold storage paper wallets on: August 02, 2014, 04:23:47 AM
i was creating some paper wallets today and was wondering if its possible or even probable for another address to be the same. I think I've seen this question asked before, but Im not that technical and was wondering how that works. I always assumed that when a new address was created it would store that address in the chain or at least could be found. but when I was making paper wallets that never touched the internet it got me thinking..

Could someone explain in laymans terms how we can generate an address with a private key and be assured that someone else doesn't have the same one? I know its a very simple question, and probably a simple answer..

This is called "address collision", and it is mathematically improbable.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Weaknesses#Definitely_not_a_problem
Quote
Generating tons of addresses
Generating an address doesn't touch the network at all. You'd only be wasting your CPU resources and disk space.

Also, a collision is highly unlikely.

Keys are 256 bit in length and are hashed in a 160 bit address.(2^160th power) Divide it by the world population and you have about 215,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 addresses per capita.(2.15 x 10^38)

Hey Ragnius, is there anyone who is capable of developing the wallet, we should add in wallet advertising to pay for the development of the coin.

Regards,
DarkWolf

That's a great idea. This would be a great source of remuneration to the developer of the wallet, the app, or the website.

Also, with the new homepage for Animecoin (as animeco.in seem to be dead) we could set some add banners for the benefit of the community crowdfund.

(WOW! Page 100! That's good!)

How much you think it would cost to have Kristov Atlas on the dev team for a year? 50,000 drk? 25,000?

Once the core DS+ code is open sourced, there will be way more contributors with Evan having the good authority to merge pull requests since this was started by him. Have you checked Github to see even now there are growing number of contributors?

There will be CVEs down the road make no mistake. It will receive contributions from cryptographers, programmers and analysts alike.

Bitcoin devs don't necessarily have a lot of coins. Except Gavin and perhaps gmax, but there have been a ton of contributors to the code.

There is an incredible visualization/animation on youtube, that shows a time lapse of how the github of bitcoin evolved over time and what developers worked on it:

another similar visualisation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTILX-_JzTs

Someone could perhaps create something like this once involvement of other devs in darkcoin really takes of... (we are getting there soon)

Very, very cool! Thank you!

This week we are having the July AnimeLotto Draw!

The draw is scheduled to next Sunday, July 27th.

Before that, next Saturday (26th), the link to the ticket created with the list of donors that will be participating in the draw (to be created at http://www.randomresult.com/ticket.php with all those who will have donated since last draw until the limit date of July 25th, next Friday) will be published in a post here at our community thread, and also at http://animecoiner.blogspot.com.

Until this moment we only have 1 2 donors participating in this month's draw (http://animecoiner.blogspot.com/p/crowdfunding.html), It is:

  • 8bitp (9) ANI AH9TAJKGkQioNYfzkmamj5tpDHXoJhiUJh
  • CryptoFutaba (13) ANI AVdYjxw2ez3dyEoPd5HzRtWTf24GAkFTKE

Animecoin Community is always participating in every draw with AnimeLotto number 1 (please see rule 11 at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=423339.msg7148609#msg7148609)

Everyone still have the opportunity to participate in this month's draw as long as a donation is made untill next Friday, July 25th. Any donations made after that (from July 26th on) are also very welcome, because they will be very important to add to our CrowdFund, but will only be participating in our following draw (August/2014).

Good Luck for all of us!!

Why don't we play a little? Let's make a prize draw from the Animecoin CrowdFund donation list?

It works like that:

1 - When making a donation, each donor will inform the amount sent, the txID, and also his Animecoin address (in this case, I am not sure, but I think it is against the rules of the Bitcoin Forum to post addresses here, so maybe the address should be provided by private message).

2 - Each donor will receive a number respective to the donation made. The AnimeLotto number will be published at the Animecoiner Blog.

3 - The donor will have exclusive rights over his AnimeLotto number received: if he makes more than one donation during the period of the month current to the draw he will hold more than one AnimeLotto number.

4 - Every last week of each month there will be a draw.

5 - The specific date for the draw will always be previously announced here and at the Animecoiner Blog, with a link to monitor the results.

6 - For fairness, a random generator (http://www.randomresult.com/ticket.php) will be used.

7 - 3 (Three) random numbers will be picked by the random generator, from the donations made on the period of the month current to the draw.

8 - The #3 will receive as the third prize 5% (five percent) of his picked donation multiplied by half the number of donations during the period of the month current to the draw, with a limit of 5% (five percent) of the total CrowdFund Balance.

9 - The #2 will receive as the second prize 5% (five percent) of his picked donation multiplied by the number of donations during the period of the month current to the draw, with a limit of 10% (ten percent) of the total CrowdFund Balance.

10 - The #1 will receive as the first prize 10% (ten percent) of his picked donation multiplied by the number of donations during the period of the month current to the draw, with a limit of 20% (twenty percent) of the total CrowdFund Balance.

11 - Whenever the Random Number is "1" (one), then the respective prize is kept for the CrowdFund balance (no one wins, or better, the Animecoin Community wins).

12 - At the end of each year, the AnimeLotto of the last week of December will be a special one, including all the AnimeLotto numbers of that year (BIG PRIZE!).

The motivation for this game is to attract the attention to Animecoin, and, of course, as an incentive for more donations, working, at the same time, as an Animecoin Giveaway.

So, How do you like this idea? Any comments, or opinions are very welcome.

I think we should try it, and see if it works.

Hey, Animecoin is a POW coin, You can mine Animecoin with a GPU (spy-sgminer), I'm not sure how effective it is, but I'll let you know once I've got my rig up and running. I'm currently getting a system ready to mine Animecoin. Whether you can make a profit from mining Animecoin, I wouldn't be able to tell you that right now, simply because I don't know, there certainly is a potential for profit if the value of the coin increases by about 100-400 times or possibly even just 10-40 times with 0.00000001BTC per coin as the original price. Keep in mind that Animecoin is more valuable than any of the other coins with 100 000 000 coins or there a bouts, since it has so many coins with the min price for each coin being 0.00000001BTC, which means its 10 times more valuable in terms of total market value. So a coin with 100 mil coins at the 0.00000001BTC each will have a total value of 10BTC whereas Animecoin will have a total value of roughly 10-20 times more, so 100BTC - 200BTC.

In terms of developers, I'd gladly help with developing the coin, but I think the first thing we need to do is set up another website, so that we can maintain it and add descriptions, programs and other developments for the community to have easy access and to use.

Regards,
DarkWolf

I'm not entirely sure either, but I think, POW stands for proof of work and POS stands for proof of stake. Proof of work I would understand as being mining, you mine the coin and then you keep the coins you mine. Proof of stake I think means, you buy a certain amount of coins and you are in a sense rewarded with interest on those coins. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I too would love to know a bit more about these two concepts if someone could explain them in greater detail it would be much appreciated.

...

China is just being smart, buying gold (and other hard assets) with all of their FIAT$.  Like the OP wrote, hardly anyone really knows what is going on in China and what their gold policies are.

Owning gold, in your own physical possession, is plainly smart.  Whether you are a country (China) or an individual (me).  How much gold to hold is up to each one of us.  I typically recommend 5% - 20% of one's net wealth to be held in gold, depending (we are at 11%).  Only about 1% of Americans own ANY investment (non-jewelry) gold.

Besides, gold and BTC do share one fun characteristic: they are both a lottery ticket that may come in large...  I wonder whether it will be gold or BTC that reaches FOFOA's $55,000 first...

fofoa.blogspot.com

Long and hard reading, start in 2009 (yes.....).  He is perhaps the top gold analyst in the world.

(No, he does NOT like BTC...)

I agree, it's always smart to hold some gold.

Thanks for the link.
397  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: It is time to adjust the fee! on: July 25, 2014, 10:12:14 AM
With a free market, you would think exchanges would always be lowering fees to try to get more customers.  It might take time but it should happen.  We just need more trustworthy exchanges, that's what I think is missing.  Why can't these exchanges get their acts together at the rates they are charging?

Too bad the western exchanges didn't take one out of China's book and give us 0% fees for some time. Undecided
The Chinese exchanges either trade with their own funds, and trade against their clients, or are using customer funds for their own expenses (essentially stealing from customers in small amounts over time)

True...

I do not believe in free services. No one works for free. Two possibilities: dumping or scam (both are not good news, anyway)

I am not a "professional" miner. As I have said before, I only mine ANI to help the network. As Animecoin is a CPU friendly coin, a simple computer will be able to mine it, not being necessary any expensive set up, GPUs, and also no ASICs. Of course, the better your machine, the bigger your reward.

399  Economy / Economics / Re: Why is China Hoarding Gold? on: July 24, 2014, 10:47:15 PM
Gold means stability and independence from the USD. Independence from the USD means more sovereignty, especially in a possible USD collapse. All the recent BRICS' talk about being more independent form the USD is an example for this tendency.

In order to maintain its exchange rates policy (keeping the value of the Renmimbi from appreciating versus the USD) China holds a massive amount of U.S. Treasury Bonds. They cannot simply dump it, for it would cause Yuan's appreciation, disturbing their exports.

At the same time, they also want to achieve the above mentioned stability, independence and sovereignty. That's why, maybe, little by little their intention is to substitute the USD they hold, diversifying it with other holdings like gold (and, who knows in the future, BTC).

(Just a guess)
400  Economy / Economics / Re: Can bitcoin survive without the Internet? on: July 24, 2014, 08:27:18 PM

You can't stop neither Internet or Bitcoin.
I mean how can you think that Internet or Bitcoin can be stopped ? Do you think there is an ON/OFF button somewhere ?
WTF ?

The Bitcoin network should not depend on the Internet forever. In case of a major Internet failure (caused by wars, natural disasters, corrupt governments, etc) we would become "hostages". There should be a "backup network"  in wich Bitcoin could function. A P2P network seems to be the ideal: It is not impossible (although it seems to be difficult at first) that an independent P2P network is created, to coexist running in parallel with the Internet, but with its own infrastructure.
