I think a big issue with exchange adoption has been the support burden surrounding payment IDs, which was why I was pushing the integrated address/PayID solution. I'm betting exchanges will be more open to supporting XMR when that's out of the way.

I just grabbed the latest from github and I see this "integrated_address" feature.

It seems to generate a random payment ID for you and then integrates the payment ID into a new address so you don't have to specify the payment ID to your sender. Damn, that's cool.

You can thank MoneroMooo and luigi1111 for making that happen. Has everyone else who pledged XMR for this feature contributed?
383  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: June 12, 2015, 06:05:45 PM
Adding the payment ID with checksum seems fairly simple. I went and created a test address just now:

Code:
Standard Address: 44sKiMHpNjRivdd2NQUyViGYZy4wbJ9L9KhFUaqSSE6JQP9LLbxL9tSikwrhYTRu3x2zKR28txuEc3zSGPduQ9byMUKoz6m
Payment ID: feedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeed

Code:
Integrated Address: 44sKiMHpNjRivdd2NQUyViGYZy4wbJ9L9KhFUaqSSE6JQP9LLbxL9tSikwrhYTRu3x2zKR28txuEc3zSGPduQ9byXSb563RKvyBgorjsFGwyx9gorjsFGwyx9gorjsFGwyx9TpPbbCy

What I did:

Instead of the standard hex format - ('12' network byte) + (public spend key 64 digits) + (public view key 64 digits) + (checksum 8 digits) - I stripped the checksum and appended the payment ID, then recalculated and appended the new checksum. This creates a 101 byte address instead of the standard 69 byte, and 139 "Public Address" characters vs 95 standard.

cnBase58 --> hex the above "Integrated Address" and you get (separated for clarity):
Code:
12 55a1e49673f5a8faa6ba4f942585695ceee5c7522496be6fc38d3f09905e3f8b ca6313deac11aff9a7241e7095863b0be3099d50d7a0cd11e0adbcf4990e64b5 feedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeedfeed b1d0950e

The code just needs to check for length to determine the type. Alternatively, (I don't know what all the other cryptonotes are using) the network byte could be changed to 0x13 (done) or something for the "Integrated Address".

Grin

Thank you! Can both of you PM me your XMR addresses?

Blockstream just released testing environment for sidechain. The actual implementation is still a long way but i'm curious could sidechains theoretically kill all altcoins (including Monero) ? Let's say someone would copy Monero into monerosidechain, people can move value from bitcoin to monerosidechain with a fixed rate to take advantage of anonymity. Would that leave the purpose of holding Monero only for speculation ?

Unfortunately (for Bitcoin), a Monero sidechain would do nothing to improve Bitcoin's fungibility, nor would it be nearly as private.

Plot of The Social Network: taking an idea that's been done (Friendster, Myspace) and borrowing a tweak of that idea (Harvard Connection) and building it into a scalable machine that will change the way the world works (Facebook).

And now they compare Facebook with monero...  Cheesy Roll Eyes

I'm not a royal "they," but if the plot fits....

With "they" i mean not only you but the whole Community, Einstein  Roll Eyes

Yes. The "whole Community" just made that comparison. Everyone thinks as one cohesive unit, like the spider aliens from Ender's Game.
386  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: June 05, 2015, 06:37:49 PM
What do you guys think will happen to the price of Monero if Bitcoin crashes to say 30 usd/btc?

Well, I'd say that XMR is a 2 year old baby, considering BTC is its brother at the age of 12. One's destiny follows the other but they're uniquely different. So my answer is that *IF* BTC falls at $30 XMR will still be available to buy for 0.00x BTC (or 0.x BTC if we want to be realistic). My point is that both currencies are connected since up until now buying XMR can only be done via BTCs.

When (if) this changes, with a more "out of the box" wallet solution XMR will slowly will start to "walk" and then begin running. But we're a bit far from there.

if you want to change that, we can do it with 3.5 BTC's worth of votes.

https://coinomat.com/coinvoting.php

If BTC were to tumble, it would be preferable to already have a fiat exchange mechanism in place.

I ignored him long ago.  Now, if people would just stop quoting him... Smiley

I guess that's actually I good idea. His posting is really subpar; the only thing even mildly amusing about him is his frequent avatar changes, although he has to be unignored for that to be visible. Hmm...choices...

Edit: this post was off-topic. Uh, nice little spike the last few hours. Tongue

You missed it. He was a moderator there for a few days. Now he's some creepy old gold miner or something.

He shows strong indication of paid troll behavior with a clear agenda of spreading Fear, Uncertain and Doubt.

Who would pay someone so ineffective? I think he's just an actual internet troll.

And the instant you ban him we'll have five more trolls in here bitching about it.
388  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The Reality of Masternode Centralization on: June 03, 2015, 09:00:08 PM
The great thing about decentralized crypto is that anyone who wants to create a web wallet is free to do so, whether he's a core dev or not. If you think MyMonero is shady, you should create a better alternative for people to use for their xmr.

Regarding your other concerns with Monero, anyone who wants to contribute can. The core team members are hardly the only devs... and if any of the many xmr contributors were that concerned about a core gui, for example, they'd implement one and submit a pull request. Nobody has yet, because it's just not that high of a priority.

It seems we're warming up to him and not the other way around.

Deep down we all love primer- and his harsh, unforgiving exterior... whether we choose to admit it or not.

The WTF chill creeping my skin - I get almost anytime thinking about POW. Power ... wasted.

A major misunderstanding regarding Proof of Work is that the work is "wasted." In reality, you have to consume one resource to create another. Fiat money "printing" only works because the system is centralized and the value is legally upheld. I have serious doubts that PoS can work in a decentralized system.
391  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 29, 2015, 07:09:29 AM
Monero attracts all kinds of people around it. We even had a self-confessed bankster agent joining our nightlife in Berlin! Think about that for a moment Smiley

Heh, I was just in cypher's thread yesterday explaining how Monero enables defections that Bitcoin cannot.

Was just thinking a bit earlier while watching that exchange, I think his mentoring to me inadvertently is making me act the same way with Monero as he did with Bitcoin way back when. And I never did get to mine BTC, but I can proudly say that I was a MRO miner.

I felt like part of history cracking pre-ASIC BTC blocks, but MRO's difficulty started too high for me to get more than a couple.

Thanks for reminding me I should be equally as proud of them!    Grin   Grin   Grin

I still get a mild dopamine rush when seeing the letters MRO.  Cool

Don't forget it started with "BMR." I actually mined quite a bit of BMR from my two desktops.

The price goes up, and the haters are nowhere to be found.

The price goes down, and out they all come. Don't expect much originality. Common FUD lines include:
- "RIP [coin]" <-- a timeless classic
- "[coin] sucks. No wonder the price is falling."
- "I heard [coin] is just a copy/paste of [othercoin] with no real innovation. Is it true?"
- "[coin] doesn't even have [some stupid feature]. Is it true?"
- "I told you [coin] was doomed... see how the price went down?"

The price goes back up, and away they all go!

There's no reason for anybody to ever hate this coin. The price goes up - go long. The price goes down - short it. Easy money.

Easy money for aminorex when he liquidates you:

If you are aware of largish margined short positions, there is very little reason not to take their money.  In case you are unfamiliar with the process of running stops, it is as simple as placing a sell order just over the price at which margined positions are forced closed, and sweeping the market up to that price.  If you have the required data and do the math, it is as close as you can come to a guaranteed profit.
393  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 28, 2015, 12:15:41 AM
Not wearing any tinfoil hat here, but too many coincidences in order to move the price down looks fishy to me.

You don't need a tinfoil hat to realize that pretty much every time there's volatility or significant movement in XMR's price, some kind of major disruption/panic occurs to thwart it. Every single time.
394  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 27, 2015, 08:01:27 AM
I think it's high time that btc-e dropped all those nonsense dinosaur coins and replace them with XMR. It just makes sense.

The longer they take to add Monero while keeping these shitcoin, worse are their perceived image overall IMO, Cryptsy e.g. has 0 trust from me now.

Lol, so self-centered. Unfortunately the world doesn't care what you think, dude. Most people don't know about monero. Most bitcoiners. Not adding monero isn't going to do anything to their image, at least not yet.

This overly delusional optimism is really harming monero's image just like delusional bitcoiners harm bitcoin's image. You guys need to be realistic while being optimistic. Sure, maybe monero has promise. But as of now, it's really not that significant yet.

XMR has been at or near the top of Cryptsy's voting for several months now. They definitely know about it, as do the guys at btc-e. Most folks in the community who are paying attention are well aware of Monero's "significance."

hard coin to mine - recent developments not favorable  Shocked

Johnny Mnemonic, here's a new one-liner for your list.

Just kidding. Some of these drive-by troll posts really crack me up. WTF was that?!

Haha. At least he gets points for originality  Grin

Nobody answered a question so far, so I will ask again: how do you back up your mymonero wallet?
Apparently, there is a .keys file, but where is it?
Since I am not a developer and/or programmer, some relatively easy path for a "common" web user would be much appreciated.
For example, bitcoin web wallet (blockchain.info) gives you easy means to download the wallet backup file.
Thanks.

You can also go to Account -> Account Details and save your view key and spend key. This will ensure you can recover your wallet if MyMonero.com ever goes down.
398  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Should Munero be censored on Bitcointalk? on: May 21, 2015, 10:05:27 PM
what do u think ?
Should Munero automatically get replaced with "Bullshite" here in Bitcointalk ?

that means if post "Monero is the best" then post would look like "Bullshite is the best" automatically.

I vote YES.  To hell with dem  garbage junk=)

If Monero is the good coin, Monero should have own forum and supporters should stop spamming BTT.

Last I checked, this is the "Alternate cryptocurrencies" forum. Is that still the case?
399  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Should Munero be censored on Bitcointalk? on: May 21, 2015, 09:33:37 PM
The internet is where logical and respectful personalities go to die.

Feel free to critique the technology itself. Hating monero because GTO911 supports it is like hating oxygen because Miley Cyrus breathes it.

Just for fun I took a long position at around 210 with a miniscule amount of monero. Woke up this morning to find it liquidated. Fuck margin trading.
