Andhra Pradesh: In first in Asia, state government introduces blockchain technology to fight cyber crime

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/andhra-pradesh-asia-blockchain-technology-cyber-crime-cashless/1/835037.html

While the government is making an aggressive pitch for digital transaction and e-banking, rising incidents of cyber crime are a concern among users and online service providers.

The recent hacking of social media accounts of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and some journalists fuelled the debate on whether the country is prepared to go cashless.

In possibly a first in Asia, Andhra Pradesh has introduced blockchain technology to prevent incidents of cyber crime. The government has introduced the technology in some departments to protect the database from being hacked.

Bitcoin’s rally crushed every other currency in 2016. Here’s why

http://www.livemint.com/Money/SaLdZnuKq7KzVNAJ8rofvO/Bitcoins-rally-crushed-every-other-currency-in-2016-Heres.html

Bitcoin, that nebulous digital currency that trades in cyberspace and is “mined” by code-cracking computers, emerged as a better bet this year than every major currency, stock index and commodity contract.

The electronic coin that trades and is regulated like oil and gold surged 79% since the start of 2016 to $778, its highest level since early 2014, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. That’s four times the gains posted by Russia’s ruble and Brazil’s real, the world’s top two hard currencies.

After its 2008 creation, enthusiasts hailed bitcoin as the next big thing in foreign exchange markets, an obvious monetary evolution in an increasingly digital world. But by 2014, its value tumbled 58% as governments cracked down on its use and a major exchange lost account-holders’ funds. There are a number of reasons the hard-to-track currency is staging a comeback now, from capital controls in places like China to isolationist rumblings in the UK and US.

Afraid to invest in bitcoin? Unocoin's SIP plan might help

http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/afraid-to-investbitcoin-unocoins-sip-plan-might-help_8120701.html

Once a subject of scepticism because of being decentralised and independent of any central authority, the cryptocurrency bitcoin has gained more acceptance by governments and people alike. Despite the growing talk surrounding the digital currency, it still remains a mystery for many and the volatility in its price does not make it a lucrative investment.

Bangalore-based startup bitcoin trading platform, Unocoin, launched its full-featured mobile bitcoin app, with 24/7 access to real-time bitcoin market prices and instantaneous trading transactions on November 28. What's even better is it also provides a systematic investment plan (SIP) to buy bitcoins. As is known, SIPs are a conservative way to make any investment, compared to investing in one go.

Note ban: Zebpay, Unocoin & Coinsecure see surge in new users willing to experiment with bitcoin

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/note-ban-zebpay-unocoin-coinsecure-see-surge-in-new-users-willing-to-experiment-with-bitcoin/articleshow/55993995.cms

For bitcoin startups in India, the festival season began in November with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President-elect Donald Trump bearing early Christmas gifts.

In the past month, the country's three funded bitcoin trading platforms — Zebpay, Unocoin and Coinsecure — have registered a surge in new users willing to experiment with the cryptocurrency as an alternative asset class. Amajority of the users are millennials, of ages 18 to 35.

This new fondness for bitcoins traces a cascade of global uncertainties that began with the British referendum in June to exit the European Union and leading to a weak Chinese yuan, Trump's win and Modi's crackdown on untaxed money.

Volatile Chinese stock market pushes bitcoin to its three-year high

http://tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/volatile-chinese-stock-market-pushes-bitcoin-to-its-three-yeah-high-352760.html

Digital currency bitcoin on Tuesday surged to its highest in nearly three years as investors bought the asset in a supposedly safe-haven bid in the midst of volatility in the Chinese stock market. On Tuesday, bitcoin climbed as high $793.27 BTC=BTSP on the BitStamp platform, its highest since February 2014. Since August this year, bitcoin has soared 70 percent.

Darin Stanchfield, founder and chief executive officer of bitcoin wallet KeepKey said bitcoin has benefited from uncertainty in the Chinese stock market. Mainland Chinese markets have been on the defensive the last two days due to a widely-anticipated interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday. Chinese stock markets though did finish higher on Tuesday.

“Bitcoin has become a safe haven, though not like a mainstream safe haven. We have been seeing lots of volume from China and also India,” Stanchfield said. According to digital currency research firm Coindesk, 95 percent of global bitcoin trading is done through Chinese exchanges. Bitcoin is a virtual currency that can be moved money around the world quickly and anonymously without the need for a central authority. That makes it attractive to those seeking to get around strict capital controls in countries like China.

1.5 btc stolen and I bet no ones going to do anything about it.
have you read the topic of the thread and it says an advocate has already logged a complaint against a businessman for stealing 1.5 bitcoin and if he can provide the sufficient proof regarding it and since he is an advocate i am sure he can get a result in this case and he knows how to handle these sort of fraud cases.I am looking forward to hear the verdict about this case .

The FIR is the first step. Many people were facing hurdles in this step itself.
We have a long way to go, from police investigation to filing a chargesheet to conviction.
Let us hope we get a precedent in this case.

http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/sme/how-crypto-currencies-will-revolutionise-our-worldfuture_8091761.html

Just 22-years old computer programmer, Vitalik Buterin has become one of the leading authorities on crypto currencies in the world. Crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, Namecoin, Zcash operate upon the blockchain technology where the code resides in thousands of computers around the world. These currencies are difficult to decrypt making them highly secure. Buterin who conceptualised Ethereum, a blockchain based distributed computing platform talks to Moneycontrol.com on how this technology can change transportation, financial contracts and digital payments in future.

Q. How would you define Ethereum?
A: Ethereum is a general purpose blockchain. It is a blockchain protocol that supports a programming languages so that you can build any kinds of application on the top of it. One of the important ideas behind it is building of a smart contract which is a computer program that you can upload on the BlockChain. At a time when the Government is looking to push people towards digital mediums for transactions, many of the asset classes such as real estate are still stuck in a cash centric world. Add to this, the volatility of the stock markets today is something that keeps many investors at bay. However, there is a digital asset which has been increasingly gaining popularity among investors -- Bitcoin.

A cryptocurrency introduced in 2009 by Satosh Nakamoto whose price solely depends on demand and supply.

Sandeep Goenka, COO and Co-founder of Indian bitcoin exchange company Zebpay says that the value of the bitcoin has increased from around $300 last year to now over $700. He says that with demonetisation there has been a sudden growth in interest in bitcoins.

http://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/technology/bitcoin-hits-highest-levels-in-almost-three-years/55906886

Web-based digital currency bitcoin hit its highest levels in almost three years on Friday, extending gains since India sparked a cash shortage by removing high-denomination bank notes from circulation a month ago.

Bitcoin was trading as high as $774 on the New York-based itBit exchange, up almost 1% on the day and the highest since February 2014, having climbed almost 9% in the past month.

Bitcoin is a cash alternative that can be used for moving money across the globe quickly and anonymously with no need for a central authority to process transactions. It has climbed around 80% so far this year, far exceeding its 35% rise in 2015.

Uncertain times sure tend to bring cheer to the digital currency bitcoin. Be it Brexit, the Greek referendum of 2015, or the US Presidential race immediately followed by the surprise demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes in India; in all instances the price of bitcoin has appreciated considerably.

The cryptocurrency, also termed as ‘virtual gold’, is steadily becoming a safe haven for investment and a medium to hedge against future currency volatility.

On Zebpay, India’s largest bitcoin trading platform, the trading price spiked to a high of Rs 69,621 (approx USD 1,000) per BTC in the last week of November, whereas the global market average stood at around USD 735 per BTC.

Nobody in the lecture hall was taken aback when Sahil Shah, a second-year BBA student of NirmaBSE 0.06 % University, Ahmedabad, secured a perfect 10 in his class project — on bitcoins. “A man who can make money selling bitcoins can also yap about it,” jibed his close friends.

It is almost lore on Nirma campus—18-yearold Sahil Shah made a cool Rs 42,000 profit selling two bitcoins on Zebpay (a bitcoin exchange) a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The youngster, like many other early adopters of bitcoin, surfed the rally in bitcoin prices that followed the PM’s announcement.

Prosecutor’s office paid about $1,400 in Bitcoin as ransom to free its network

http://tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/prosecutors-office-paid-about-1400-in-bitcoin-as-ransom-to-free-its-network-351442.html

A state prosecutor’s office in Pennsylvania was among hundreds of thousands of victims of a now-shuttered international cyber crime operation, paying nearly $1,400 in a bitcoin ransom to free up its infected computer network, authorities disclosed Monday.

Federal prosecutors said in court documents only that an unidentified state government entity had been victimized by the ring known as the Avalanche network. But the Allegheny County district attorney, Stephen Zappala Jr., confirmed to The Associated Press that it was his office.

The disabling of the Avalanche network by the European Union and U.S. authorities was announced last week in Europe. Federal documents unsealed in Pittsburgh on Monday provided additional details.

Bitcoin price at 52-week high

http://www.business-standard.com/article/international/bitcoin-price-at-52-week-high-116120300878_1.html

The price of the bitcoin, a popular crypto currency, crossed its 52-week high on Friday at $774. The surge was seen initially after Donald Trump won the US presidential election early this month and now because of China putting controls on capital outflows, including quotas for importing gold. Chinese investors found solace in bitcoin as a safe heaven taking its price to 52-week high. A similar rising trend was seen in India soon after demonetisation of the currency on November 8.

Bitcoin prices in India have risen faster than international prices in the past few weeks. Usually, Indian prices were quoted at 3-5 per cent premium to international price as in India supply has always been limited. However, last week-end, bitcoin price on Indian exchanges was traded at Rs 69,000-70,000 per bitcoin, which was its all-time high price.

399  Local / India / Re: 20% premium on bitcoin for Indian customers thank you demonatization on: December 03, 2016, 07:06:21 AM
Demonatization is an over all a good thing, it is showing the world and mainly Indians that the real intrinsic value in any currency lies in its usability factor like bitcoin.  The free market exchanges in india like coinsecure, btcxindia, trybitcoin etc are seeing a price surge purely as a result of demand and supply. It is organic economics not greed.

Organic, but how? If not greed, why did buyers bought the coins just for the sake of hiding their black money behind the scenes?
If not greed, why the sellers are not taking old notes anymore? It's all greed for which everyone committed wrong deeds, but I would say it's not greed, but business and Indians did it just because of demonetization, but the effect seems to be melting now.

Organic because of the ratio of demand and supply. As far as I know all the transactions at various trading platforms are done via the banking system (as an investment option) which leaves no room for black money conversion. There is no point in stereo typing.

Definitely there is no chance of converting black money using bitcoins. If it were possible, people would have rushed to do so. However, some people might view bitcoins as a secure means to store money (black or white) in the future. That could have led to the increased demand.

Blockchain adoption is a good move but I dont think it will lead to adoption of bitcoin. But it will definitely bring btc to limelight

Companies are very clear that they are adopting blockchain and not Bitcoin. In this case, there is no question of using bitcoin, because this relates to reconciliation of supply chain records.

In any case, this story received a lot of media attention.
