382  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: What exchange site will you be using? on: June 22, 2011, 06:59:28 AM
i've heard some reasonable things about BritCoin.  i'll be investigating them.

i have no dog in the mtgox fight - i'm perfectly prepared to accept that they can come out of their troubles stronger and more effective.  or not.

at the moment i have some coinage on tradehill, but haven't actually entered into any transactions.  i'm in Bitcoin for the long term - and in it as a currency.  i'll just be waiting and watching.
383  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Changes in Bitcoin Client on: June 22, 2011, 06:52:08 AM
I don't think anyone can say for sure. An export method for private keys into a format guaranteed to remain stable for the extremely long-term would be a good idea.

indeed it would.

in the meantime, one can update the Bitcoin client off the internet.  from version to version, that should work ok.
384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if bitcoins that can be tracked back to Silk Road are declared 'illegal'? on: June 22, 2011, 06:46:23 AM
what if every twenty dollar bill with traces of cocaine on it were declared illegal?
385  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 2.0 - Bitcoin backed by "junk silver" - coin dealers become exchanges on: June 22, 2011, 05:17:55 AM
yes - and they can reverse transactions whenever they feel like it.

the tender mercies of the blockchain look better and better, don't they?

What's the difference between someone reversing a transaction, and doing other things to harm the money supply like yanking some of the silver, or declaring an address invalid?

"User XYZ123 is now in possession of stolen Bitcoin2.0s, no one accept these coins they are now worthless."

If you have a central issuer you have a central authority - blockchain or no blockchain they can still fuck you over.

exactly my point.

but perhaps i should have said:

Are you looking to buy anything in particular?

Well so far I plan to buy some snacks from bitmunchies. But if anyone has any interesting links to products and services for sale I will be happy to take a look.

if you're a book collector drop me a PM...
388  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 2.0 - Bitcoin backed by "junk silver" - coin dealers become exchanges on: June 22, 2011, 04:41:12 AM
OP seems to have missed the point completely - the charm of Bitcoin is it's complete and utter non-reliance on a central authority to give the units value. If you're going to have a central authority minting the units and giving them value, why fuck around with a block chain at all? Just start a paypal-esque service where people can mail you junk silver and you credit their account. Done and done.

yes - and they can reverse transactions whenever they feel like it.

389  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 2.0 - Bitcoin backed by "junk silver" - coin dealers become exchanges on: June 22, 2011, 04:37:15 AM
so the plan is to resurrect the Silver Certificate?  but not printed by the US government?

ummm... that's been tried (except with gold), hasn't it?

didn't work out too well, did it?

silly.

You store the silver off-shore along with server hosting. You just need to find a friendly environment and possibly some quality private security.

and then you are not only at the mercy of whoever holds the silver, but they are untouchable by the legal system (U.S.) which represents the two of us.

right?

24... I hate being old.
41 and wow do I hope that was sarcasm.  Cry

it wasn't sarcasm - 't'was callow youth.

here i am, one of two 59 yo's (except i just turned 60) - enjoying the hell out of seeing a 67 yo.
392  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Protest against new moderation rules on: June 21, 2011, 03:58:02 PM
i'm in support of moderation.  although i'd prefer a self-moderating approach like the one DailyKos uses, as i've mentioned before.

with all of everybody's nattering about rights, ideals, and blah blah blah, nobody has pointed out two obvious realities:

1.) this is not "our" forum.  we don't pay for it.  we are guests.  and

2.) whether you care to admit it or not (n.b., perhaps you are one such), there are people in this world who get up in the morning, and their first thought is: "who can i hurt today?  what damage can i do?  what can i destroy that someone else has built?"

oh:  and then there are the trolls who are paid...
393  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: EFF no longer accepting Bitcoin on: June 21, 2011, 08:21:24 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the entire point of EFF to aid individuals in technology related legal battles? So isn't being aware of what is and isn't legal in relation to the digital world a key factor in their existence?

well, ok.

yes, that is their point - but lawyers don't defend themselves.  "fool for a lawyer", and all that.

perhaps - being a donation-funded organization - they can't afford any lawyers as good as they'd like to have.  and if they needed a lawyer they'd probably have difficulty finding one who knew as much about the internet as they do, at any price.

but oh boy, will i be pissed if they don't take on any Bitcoin cases.
394  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it a Bitcoin web developer's goal to create ugly website? on: June 21, 2011, 07:13:44 AM

now THAT is a gorgeous website.

but you forgot the mouse trails...
395  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / EFF no longer accepting Bitcoin on: June 21, 2011, 06:59:01 AM
here is a link to their full statement:

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/06/eff-and-bitcoin

Quote
1. We don't fully understand the complex legal issues involved with creating a new currency system. Bitcoin raises untested legal concerns related to securities law, the Stamp Payments Act, tax evasion, consumer protection and money laundering, among others. And that’s just in the U.S. While EFF is often the defender of people ensnared in legal issues arising from new technologies, we try very hard to keep EFF from becoming the actual subject of those fights or issues. Since there is no caselaw on this topic, and the legal implications are still very unclear, we worry that our acceptance of Bitcoins may move us into the possible subject role.

[emphasis mine]

from their perspective it makes sense i suppose.

under the circumstances, i was pleased to see no mention of instability or suchlike.

still, a pity.
396  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Full Disclosure] More likely MtGox Post-Mortem on: June 21, 2011, 06:53:45 AM

Magical Tux probably doesn't have 500k BTC.  Perhaps everyone on the site combined would add up to 500k BTC.  I think every bitcoin on the site got liquidated.  So he is backing it out.  The problem is whether the coins got transferred out before he caught the transaction.

just as an aside, this doesn't quite feel right.

there are 60 k accounts, and a trading volume that was at 3M USD/day at its peak.

i'd be shocked if there were only 8% of existing Bitcoin on deposit at MtGox.

carry on...
397  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Portrait of Kevin Day, Security IT Specialist and Hacker on: June 21, 2011, 03:40:18 AM

400  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill - Status update - resuming service / some accounts disabled on: June 21, 2011, 01:13:29 AM
damn internet is like a pack of jackals, waiting to pounce.

i think it's about time i spent a little more time investigating QubesOS ( http://qubes-os.org/Home.html ).  the beta 1 is up.

you can actually open something like the Bitcoin client; and only allow it a single port, whilst the rest of your environment sails blithely on...

now how cool is that?
