3804  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [NXT] Thread Wherein Large Stakeholders Foster Confidence by Outlining a Plan on: January 23, 2014, 08:58:12 PM
The security of the NXT network is a function of the level of decentralization of the stake. The more decentralized the stake, the more security each confirmation lends to a transaction. It is important for the long term health of the network that the proper balance be struck between the reward that the initial stake holders rightfully deserve for the risks they have legitimately taken and the necessity for a certain level of decentralization of stake in a proof of stake system.

With that being said it isn't immediately clear what is the right trade off or how these stake holders should go about about addressing this issue. The purpose of this thread is twofold. The space at the top will be reserved for statement by stakeholders about thinks like goals, time frame and proposed means of meeting those goals. Below that will be available for all manner of discussion related to this topic.
3805  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Buy NXT before it is too late! on: January 23, 2014, 08:44:52 PM
Please STFU and keep your Centralized coins for your self, if i want buy NxT i rather put my dollars inside the bank... same effect.

NXT isn't centralized, that would be ripple.

Yea thats basically the easiest way to think about nxt. Decentralized ripple.

what the heck is a lak

It's a PoW-coin, based on Nxt AM. This coin is protected against 51% attacks by Nxt PoS algo.

do you have the ann thread?

This comment I like.

Yes I definitely agree. I really don't know if my ideas would work. I definitely could be wrong. I do know that I'm personally willing to take the risk involved in testing them empirically and the only thing i ask of statists, is not to agree with me and start implementing my ideas themselves, but rather to simply not shoot me for trying to test them empirically myself. I think this is a very important point that is often overlooked. I have no interest in imposing freedom on anyone else, i have no interest in imposing any of my preferences on anyone else, (except for the preference that they not harm me) i only ask that they show me the same respect i show them by not trying to force freedom on them by not trying to force tyranny on me.

Honestly I think it would probably be best not to try to blaze new trails here. There are lots of used boats out there. As I understand it many people live on their boats full time for many years. So It would seem that sailboats are able to avoid corrosion reasonably well. I'll be honest though i dont know a whole lot about it. I just join sailnet forums today so that I could start learning more. Its been a lot of fun talking to these people and I've learned a lot but I haven't asked about energy yet.

I also ordered this book today http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071749578/sr=8-1/qid=1390425417/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1390425417&seller=&sr=8-1 it was recommended to me today by several of the members on the sailnet forums.

Probably it would be best to keep the boats spread pretty far apart and simply have small motor boats to go and visit neighbors. You wouldn't want to all try to dock near each other like in the pictures of centralized approaches to seasteading.

As for businesses this is a very important point and something i have been intensely interested in for some time now. The idea of businesses operating on large(er) boats that stayed at sea all the time and employed the seasteading community would be crucial. Certain industries would lend themselves to this sort of a model more than others. Software development is one that comes to mind, certain types of research, universities, arts.

I really would like to get this idea of a decentralized approach to seasteading out there. I just haven't seen any interest from the community on the several occasions i have brought it up. I wonder if im just missing something big and so everyone is just blowing me off. Or if there is genuinely not a lot of interest. Or if im just missing my target audience.

Hey Aaron,
I'm putting on a debate about Metacoin layers on FRIDAY in miami, will anyone able to speak about NXT be able to attend?  Mastercoin, Ethereum and Bitshares will be there.  This will run on LTB as a full episode next week.

Oh how I wish I were in Miami.  Or anywhere even close.

I don't know how I feel about Nxt being described as a metacoin, but since Ethereum is also on the list, it's not so bad.  I have noted that Andreas has mentioned Nxt a few times as "a layer on top of Bitcoin", though, which bugs me.

I've been thinking about a few topics lately that Nxt proponents should address, because they're also hot topics in the Bitcoin world:  fungibility, transparency vs security, counteracting centralization, the "mining economy", numbers of transactions per block (and how they change over time) as a measure of value, maintaining strong consensus on the network, and "scarcity" (which I am beginning to think is simply a myth in the digital realm).  I think Nxt has some interesting solutions for these issues and think we should be documenting them in the whitepaper.  I swear I'll get to it one day.

I'm also wondering where we are with finding someone to take the 10BTC fund for a cryptanalysis on Curve25519 key generation and EC-KCDSA signing...?  I stumbled upon this guy, from Amsterdam, who proposed a Curve25519 cryptanalysis in 2009, and am wondering if any of our Netherlandic friends (Damelon??) might want to poke him: Cees de Laat

Interesting event there. Could Niffy present NXT and talk about technical stuffs ? I don't think any technically strong guy plan to be in Miami yet.

What's a pity.  could someone go ? It is a excellent chance to present NXT. Ferment ? wesleyh ? Cfb ? how much would be a Belarus-Miami flight ticket ?

How about Ola  Huh

Nifty is a great network engineer, but not a developer. Guys, it would be worth putting some of that bounty toward flying one of our developers to the conference. Getting in front of the movers and shakers is one of the most important PR opportunities for Nxt.

someone is probably better than no one and its almost thursday already. spread this around to everyone you can and lets just see if we can get ANYONE there by friday.

Are any of you technical and articulate folks able to make it for Friday if funds are not an issue? This is such a huge opportunity, and I would love to see someone like Anon or JoeFox there. I bet we can pull together some funds to get one of you there if you're able to clear your schedule. I would gladly chip in a couple hundred $-worth of Nxt, and I think others definitely would as well.

nonononono no way. you would not want to put me on a stage in front of people. i would singlehandedly bring the price down to 0.00001 by the time I was done.

By the time we can live out there without loss of all access to tools and modern necessities, we will have built so much there that we will need government as a way of preserving our infrastructure.

I'm sorry I couldn't continue after this. This is liberty 101 stuff. This thread is not the place for discussions about the fundamentals of how, in theory, a free society could operate. It assumes that it could and is a discussion about means of getting there. Pm me though if you like and we can talk about how roads and bridges could, in theory, be maintained without the need for anyone to threaten to murder anyone else.

Hey Aaron,
I'm putting on a debate about Metacoin layers on FRIDAY in miami, will anyone able to speak about NXT be able to attend?  Mastercoin, Ethereum and Bitshares will be there.  This will run on LTB as a full episode next week.

Here's the description

At the beginning of the event, each camp will have the opportunity to present their platform, the value it adds and how it's different from the others.   The other speakers will then have an opportunity to ask questions about that platform.  This will repeat with all three projects.

The next portion of the discussion will be focused on

DACs, DAs - Specific use cases, multi-layer progressions, etc.  I'd like to expand on some of the early concepts we'll see developed on these technologies. 2-3 examples would be great per project

Fundraising - You've all done, it and it defines you to a certain extent as different from colored coins which was a much earlier idea but seems to have lacked that investable quality that is propelling this next generation.   What worked, what didn't.  What would you do differently and do those following in your footsteps absolutely need to do exactly the same.

I'd like to get visionary with the final broad topic, talk about what the ecosystem you're creating will look like in 10, 50, 100 years.  Are these Metacoins logical conclusion, or are there more innovative layers still to come?

Whatever time is left will be devoted to audience questions.

This is why Politics & Society board is best board.

thanks friend. i wish this idea was on more peoples radars. essentially instead of trying to plan a seastead libertarians need to just buy sailboats to live on instead of houses. every time a person decides to live on a boat instead of a house it cripples the power of the state because those individuals become mobile. it forces states to be more competitive in order to keep their chattel.

it can start out gradually, liberatarians just start selling their houses and buying sailboats. then once a year we have a big party out in international waters. each year a couple of people stay behind. each year more people stay behind than the year before. eventually this just evolves naturally into a seastead. no need for libertarian jesus to come down from on high to give us "a plan".

i need to dedicate more time to getting this idea out there.

What's the fingerprint of the certificate you're getting from google.com? I get:
SHA1: 3c6bde6ca0a1ae6ae9d5bfb367ab124e1b988bfb
MD5: 2791dac0733085dbe323ef7d6faa7fcd

Well it doesn't always give the warning. Only sometimes. I randomly searched things until it appeared and then got the fingerprints. After writing them down I compared them to a situation when it is not giving the warnings and they matched. But here they are anyway. I'm sure they are probably right.

SHA1 Fingerprint: D8:06:3D:AA:BB:9A:37:21:FE:95:DD:AC:DE:64:2F:20:17:57:FE:DF
MD5 Fingerprint: E8:1D:A1:DD:10:93:F5:24:23:F1:5A:81:39:DA:41:F8

I am looking to buy a small amount of NXT, around .12 BTC worth (Not sure if you're allowed to post a $ amount.)

I honestly have no idea what I'm doing… I just got into this a couple days ago. I bought some Bitcoin from coinbase and I'm awaiting it's arrival. I have Paypal or local cash ( 98371 zipcode ) I don't know if there's a trustworthy exchange for me to buy NXT, or if there's someone trustworthy here that I could buy a small amount from. I have an ebay account that i've had since 99, not sure if that would help verify that I'm legit.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

no one will take paypal, wait till you get btc and then head over to bter.com

So yea ssl encryption is not working even with websites like google and youtube. For troubleshooting purposes I booted linux mint from a flash drive and still i get the same little warning to the left of my address bar. What are your thoughts? Man in the middle? Something simpler?

sure of course but when blocks are buried under a months worth of new blocks you can trust that you are on the right chain. thus you can just store the transactions and the block payload hash separately. And even though you couldn't calculate the hash out of the blocks you had, it would be such old news after a month that this wouldn't really matter.

Shrinking works similar way. Nothing stops us from doing it each month.

Well im sure you have thought through all of this. Its just concerning to think of 100 billion people in the year 2800 still storing some idiots tweet about the fact that hes eating a sandwich from the year 2014. That would be a HUGE waste of resources. I just hope you and the other devs have an idea about how to avoid this.

hey cfb is there any reason why someone would have to store arbitrary messages on their computer for all time. I was thinking that after like a month or something people would be able to delete them out of their blockchain to save space. Do i have this right?

U can't do it without changing the block payload hash.

just an idea. not prepared to claim that its a good one.

Why Only 1000 bytes for arbitrary message?

An arbitrary number was taken.
