I made the signature and I checked it with a Trezor.

That's the problem. You need a Trezor to verify it so it may not be very useful to recover your account. It is best to stick to legacy addresses while there are so many incompatibilities in the way Segwit addresses are implemented on different clients.
3842  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?) on: May 06, 2018, 08:26:35 AM
For $500 grand I better get a house and new car with VIP status lol. The owner of this site isngreedy

Don't value Bitcoin in fiat... try this 1BTC = 1BTC

They are doing this since 2011...... when 1 BTC = $31.91.... so good morning!

Even that is to much.

It is spelt "too much"

As already quoted on the last page:

I clarified. It's 10btc. What's not to understand? The price was 10 bitcoins back in the day and won't be changed due to it being unfair to those who donated at the time.

It isn't going to change because a number of people paid 10 and 50 BTC in the past. If you want VIP or Donator status that is the price. If you think it is too much then don't buy it.

3843  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Localbitcoins now requires identification on: May 06, 2018, 08:22:22 AM
Is there any announcement to go with that? I'm wondering if that affects all accounts if it is just trades over a certain amount or in specific countries.
3844  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banknotes on: May 06, 2018, 07:18:25 AM
This is like handing over your trezor or ledger nano S Smiley
I know it's easier to handle for a person who is not so tech savvy, but what in the other topic of this I've already asked the founder: what happens if I have this banknote (card) and by the time when I want to hand it over, the secure chip fails inside? I know that the coins will still sitting on the blockchain but how I can move them if I can't make a backup?
If I lose it, then it's the same like I lose a real banknote, because it's my fault, but if there is a hardware fault, that's not the same...

From what I've read on their website there is no backup so if it fails or you lose it then you cannot get the private key to your funds any other way. This is what makes them different to other hardware wallets, the original owner has no access to the funds, only physical access give that.
This might be usable like a banknote if they were priced at a few cents rather than $20.
3845  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Big wins at FreeBitco.in on: May 06, 2018, 07:14:53 AM

You need to post a screenshot of your actual win as stated 2 posts above.

Like this:

3846  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banknotes on: May 06, 2018, 06:54:28 AM
If it requires an NFC connection to chech the current balance, why the banknote is different from a mobile wallet? It's only that if you hand it over, it does not require a transaction to wait for?

The fact that the private key always remains secret in the chip means that they seem to be made for handing them over like you would a bank note.

They aren't really notes but cards:

The problem I see with that is that they are selling them for $199 for a pack of 10 unloaded cards. So who is going to want to hand over a device worth $20 when they spend $100?

They look like a pretty cool hardware wallet but I couldn't consider them bank notes.

-snip-
Can any OG member or staff or moderator answer the following question? If posts are reported in sections that don't have mods, how are those posts handled? Do they go to a global queue of some sort for other mods to handle these submissions? If so, then would it be beneficial for users to report posts in these mod-less boards, or would their reports be pointless?

I might be wrong, but if my memory serves me right; during one of the discussions (possibly the one where a mod for Politics and society section was to be appointed) it was told that such reports go to Global Mods; also I think there was a concept of troopers on BitcoinTalk.  Guess the answer is too hazy... Huh

If this is the case, then the users of the particular boards that OP is talking about should be able to click on the "Report to moderator" link to at least bring attention to posts that break the rules. It might be wise to select a moderator for these boards based on how many posts they have accurately reported, along with a review of their history on the forums.

It is the case that the 5 global moderators have to deal with reports on boards without their own moderator. The number of those reports would be the thing that brings it to their attention that a local moderator is needed. If nobody is bothering to report things then it probably looks like everything is OK.

Did I do something wrong?

No, I did. I've only been doing this job for 1 month and I made a mistake.

A note to users posting screenshots for the extra $5 - you need to post a screenshot of the screen when you win, a screenshot of your roll history does not count for the extra reward.

As I am to blame I will ask wetsuit to verify your win and if it checks out I will personally send $5 of Bitcoin out of my pocket. PM me an address to send it to.

Hi all! Here's a screenshot of my roll history. https://imgur.com/qhTsdp7

Thank you!

Have you got a screenshot of the winning roll as requested in the instructions?
3850  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Something I don’t understand about lightning network and fees. on: May 05, 2018, 12:50:08 PM
Correct me if i'm wrong here, on LN the transaction fee only applied once at the time of closing payment channel.
When you are not closing your payment channel, you can pay for coffees many times without paying fees.
That said for example $1 fees for 50 cups of coffee sound great right?

No, there is an on-chain transaction fee to open or close a channel but there are also fees on the Lightning Network. These fees are tiny though and typically sub-satoshi amounts at the moment. As LN doesn't have scaling limitations in the same way a blockchain does, competition in the fees market should keep LN fees low.
3851  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banknotes on: May 05, 2018, 08:39:36 AM
Does that mean that the notes don't have the Bitcoin address printed on them? If not why was it done that way?

Anything printed is trivial to counterfeit. When you validate a Tangem Note over NFC, there's a cryptographic challenge–response authentication which is impossible to fake. In a few milliseconds the app gets the public key and a proof that the private key is on the chip, as well as another digital signature that attests the manufacturing authenticity of the item.

Since we already rely on NFC and the secure chip to establish value and authenticity, adding too many physical cues could decrease overall security by making people rely on them in some situations.

If we apply Tangem technology to national cryptocurrencies, governments can limit redemption of the crypto banknotes they issue to accredited agents that guarantee physical destruction at redemption — then people can rely on physical properties for those banknotes.

Thanks. I've just been having a look at your website. It looks to be a very interesting development, good luck.
3852  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Banknotes on: May 05, 2018, 08:16:09 AM
The redeemable nature of Tangem Notes mean you have to verify their current value over NFC when receiving them from someone you don't trust. We rely on the high and growing NFC smartphone penetration. Offline balance check will be available through trusted attestation, but for now an internet connection is required, because the app will check against the blockchain, using electrum nodes.

Does that mean that the notes don't have the Bitcoin address printed on them? If not why was it done that way?
3853  Other / Meta / Re: New feature for Marketplace on: May 05, 2018, 06:30:04 AM
I guess I can't help it, with a background in safety, and having kids; I like to idiot proof the world. I hate the idea of anyone making a red cent(or regional equivalent) from scams/theft.

It's very much the culture of the whole Bitcoin and cryptocurrency scene. Making financial transactions without the need for a trusted third party is the objective. With that comes the responsibility of securing your funds from theft and fraud. There is no police force or government here and the trust system is unmoderated so it is down to us to make it work as best we can.
3854  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Something I don’t understand about lightning network and fees. on: May 05, 2018, 06:18:27 AM
Ok thanks for your replies, it is pretty clear now, otherwise it didn’t make sense.

The only difference I see is that for a shop to get a card terminal someone has to sell it to them, in this case banks, but many years ago salesmen were going around the shops.

In this case, do you think lightning network enthusiasts are going to go around explaining to the shops the advantages of accepting bitcoin? Or are we expecting them to accept bitcoin when they learn about the advantages themselves? In this second case, adoption will be slower. Probably much slower.

I would think that small to medium sized businesses will always be on the lookout for ways to reduce costs. Typically they rent card terminals.

Example costs in UK.

Terminal Hire
Countertop Terminal £14 to £16 per month
Portable Terminal £17 to £21
Mobile Terminal £20 to £24

Transaction Fee
Debit Cards 0.25% to 0.35%
Consumer Credit Card 0.7% to 0.9%
Commercial Credit Card 1.6% to 1.8%

Chargeback Fee
£10-£20

Source: https://www.cardswitcher.co.uk/2017/01/card-payment-processing-fees/

That is going to add up to a hefty bill for any business.

When cards were first coming into use there was a need to sell the idea as being advantageous to cash despite the extra overheads of running it. Whereas LN will have the advantage of being a cost saving. We're still a long way from LN actually being a feasible alternative, but when it is it will sell itself.

1 thing that pisses me off is when I see an Offer of goods, in a locked thread with no option to respond; sometimes a self moderated thread is just as bad.. This is generally a scam. Here is an example

Everyone should be aware that is a sign of a likely scam. Also, use the trust system to alert other people and always check untrusted feedback that is hidden by default.

https://snag.gy/5ysY9h.jpg

If you are suspicious leave feedback as well to reinforce what is already there in this case.
3856  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos Doesn't love the Forum Anymore ?? !!!!! on: May 05, 2018, 05:55:01 AM
If you Guys think that the Local Forums are not so active and for that reason May Theymos is not choosing the Mods, then you are wrong.

The reason is more likely that there is nobody suitable on those boards to appoint as a moderator. If you think there is then nominate them.
3857  Economy / Gambling / Re: FreeBitco.in - Win free Bitcoins every hour! on: May 04, 2018, 03:34:46 PM
i do not advice anyone, wasting time besides i am still in doubt if it's fair

It's very interesting where you placed that comma. It is a very good job that you do not advise anyone.

If you doubt that it is fair then you have no understanding of provably fair and how it works, so you do not have sufficient knowledge of the subject to advise.

Yes, you are wasting your time posting that.
3858  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: Merit Phase 2 - Drain the Swamp (@theymos) on: May 04, 2018, 03:23:44 PM
@d5000 Thanks for your contribution.

I also like the idea of slowly and very gradually removing the distributed merit but I've got the impression from theymos's posts that he won't consider anything that would result in anyone losing their rank. That was really what lead me to come up with hiding signatures as an alternative.

I think either approach would be good but a few of the replies here have highlighted long term members who just don't have time to be very active. I'm currently coming to think there could be some way of making the ongoing merit requirement proportional to activity. That way satoshi and Hal are in no danger or anyone else that contributed early but either doesn't come very often or at all.

I do like your hybrid suggestion but I haven't really spent any more time on this because I don't think these sorts of proposals are being considered seriously.

It is Bitcointalk itself which is risking its status of the leading discussion board in the cryptocurrency community if shit-posting isn't prevented. It could become a pure "paid-for-community" without relevance out of the "clickworker" circle.

And if the trend continues, in some moment Bitcointalk won't be attractive anymore for cryptocurrency-related companies as a medium to advertise in. Maybe this could be even positive - as it would mean that signature campaigns and spamming would disappear without any "staff action". But I doubt if in this case the death spiral could be reverted.

Exactly!

I have noticed the moderators seem to be a bit firmer lately. Merit has made it really difficult for new spammers and account farmers so maybe banning the spammers that are already here is the way forward.
3859  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I got merits, lots of them - do you want some?? on: May 04, 2018, 02:43:23 PM
You know TMAN too, he got lots of merit, but half of them are added by the system.

Yeah and another 584 of them he earned which would still make him a Hero Member. Maybe if you stopped whining like a child about how unfair life is and made a valuable contribution to the forum like TMAN does you wouldn't still be stuck on zero.
3860  Economy / Gambling / Re: FreeBitco.in - Win free Bitcoins every hour! on: May 04, 2018, 02:32:05 PM
thanks for the info , will forward the link to my friend
yeah actually I don't know any service that offers fixed returns except poloniex lending (which is not actually fixed ) but I guess all the gambling sites never ended a year with a loss and usually the returns are like double that

it's still cool but if freebitcoin can expand the opportunities and offer higher returns ( even if it was not fixed ) that would be really great

I lend out on Bitfinex as well and the overall return is better but when the market is quiet like now I'm getting less than 4%. I've just been looking through wetsuits post history for a post I can't find because I'm sure when interest was first added he said he might later add higher rates for fixed periods of time. So a higher rate if you decide you want to commit to leaving it for 3 or 6 months but you can still withdraw just losing some of the interest. I'm just guessing here but maybe it is just that there are enough people have deposited at 4% so he doesn't need to attract anymore. User savings are at 1086 BTC today.
