Is this about whether or not they are scamming? If so, this is the wrong section.

Is this about whether or not its ok to run 2 identical campaigns? One was discontinued and moved to a different thread (see section "archival"). If so, this is the correct section.

3842  Other / MultiBit / Re: How difficult is it to crack .wallet file? on: December 27, 2015, 11:18:50 PM
Let's say, someone was able to steal my Multibit .wallet file. How difficult is it to crack it in order to get to the private keys without any information about the password?
Just wondering, because i recently found a virus on my computer and this question came up to me.

Classic or HD? How long is the password?

HD:

Code:
>python btcrecover.py --no-dupchecks --performance --wallet mbhd.wallet.aes
Using 4 worker threads
| 1121  elapsed: 0:00:22  rate:  50.88  P/s
Interrupted after finishing password # 1127

while watching HD video.

Classic:

Code:
>python btcrecover.py --no-dupchecks --performance --wallet multibit_abc123def.key
-snip unrelated warning-
Using 4 worker threads
| 8649934  elapsed: 0:00:20  rate: 430.84 kP/s
Interrupted after finishing password # 8901756

Again while watching HD video. CPU is an i5 4. Gen.

btcrecover does not support GPUs for Multibit yet. AFAIK its also no longer activly developed either.

Secondstrade will have 35 max posts/week after the next payout, please update

Source -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=907271.msg13333984#msg13333984

1) Betcoin.tm campaign is paying 3 weeks(hero) and 2 weeks(Sr.) pay in advance, would that mean the campaign will be moved to Active?
2) Yabtcl 1) Is having problems with their site and 2) has no updates about the campaign. Would make sense to put an asterix on them.
3) Human resources has an additional campaign running under a different manager, what will be done about it? Only difference between the two, however , is a rule regarding min. posts in Service section
4) Bit-x is also having some payment issues.

Disclaimer: Personal opinions, as always Mitchell has the last word.

1) No, once they paid all they will be moved
2) Source? I might still do my own research and add an asterix regardless. It would be very helpfull if you could link the relevant posts in the future.

-> HP is reindexing ( https://yabtcl.com/signatureCampaign.aspx )

Quote
2015-12-26 12:47 UTC - 5 days and some hours and still 12 weeks of blocks remaining to be reindexed.

-snip-
Looks like the Bitcoin Core finally will finish the re-index today (unfreaking believable the time it took). We will bring the site online as soon it finishes.
We plan to post the details of our weekly campaign tomorrow.
-snip-

Added no asterix for now. If they did not fix this by tomorrow, let us know.

3) They already have two campaigns listed, did they create a 3rd? If so, link? It should be added.

Looks like they have 3 now.

#1 by substrata (moved to archival) -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1305802.0
#2 by SFR10 -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1305559.0 (newly added)
#3 by Gianluca95 -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1302585.0 (took over from substrata)
#4 by Robertt -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1302585.0 (was already added)

I added the managers name to the detailed version and their first letter to the short version. I was constantly losing track without this.

4) Source?

-> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=877765.msg13343875#msg13343875

"Away until the 30th, with limited internet." - not sure what you guys are not getting from that statement on Marco's signature?

Added asterix and wrote a PM to marco asking for a PM once he cleared the issue.

3844  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?) on: December 27, 2015, 08:17:39 PM
If i post 28 messages this week for an example, will i appear with activity 28 two weeks later automatically? Or still 14?

You can make 28 posts in term n and 1 post in term n+1 for a total number of 29 posts and 28 activity. Not sure if that answers the question, if not try rephrasing.

The blow quote is from Stackexchange.

Quote
Answering myself.

This seems to be a common problem with MultiBit. The problem however is not with the number of addresses, but with the total number of transactions. They say that because it's a "light wallet", it will not handle a too great total number of transactions.

Who said that where?

Quote
If I may be allowed the opportunity of a rant, to call on this bullshit. The problem is not with the concept of a light wallet, but with the poor software design of MultiBit (and clones). How can they say that because it's light it can't handle too many transactions? The Bitcoin core client can handle any number of transactions while also acting as a full Bitcoin node and while processing the entire blockchain. The light wallet only skims the blockchain to find transactions referencing the addresses in the wallet, and yet for some reason, because it's light, it can't handle many transactions. Dear MultiBit developers, please get a grip!

UPDATE: You may use the similar light wallet Electrum which does not exhibit this behavior.

I have no idea where you got these ideas, but bitcoin core does not handle >100k transactions very well. If you want to test this for yourself I have a ~400MB wallet.dat file for you. If you can even start bitcoin core in a stable fashion with that wallet I would be very surprised. At the very least your "any number of transactions" is just nonsense. Id also like to see a quote where the MB developers say their wallet is unable to handle 200 transactions.

And just FYI Electrum has also limitations of what it can process, IIRC after 10k addresses used most electrum servers will not answer queries for the next address and you need to switch wallets. I know of no restrictions to the number of transactions, but I assume there are also some in place, even if only for the sake of DOS mitigation.

3846  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Visual Explanation of Subchains -- Secure 0-conf and massively scale Bitcoin on: December 27, 2015, 07:09:45 PM
the problem i see is that every time the weak hash is found. more tx data is added and the hashing has to start again. which would make strong hashing very hard to achieve if it keeps needing to change data every couple minutes.. effectively starting from scratch from the hashing point of view

bitcoin mining does not instantly add tx's.. there is a lag of one blocklength(~10mins). where the tx's sit in the mempool and get preselected as to which tx's should be allowed in the very next block.

once one block is solved the large lump of pre-selected txdata is then hashed, never changing until a hash solution is found.
-snip-

That should not matter much as there is no progress anyway. Adding more transactions to the block can also be a method to allow a new round of nonces.

There are other things though that can happen, e.g. what if 5 weak blocks of 250KByte are found before the next 1MB full block? With the variance its certainly possible. Are there no limits for the weak blocks? Are they set at the average rate they are found?

See franky1's answer below, I will read the pdf before asking further questions.

How did you discover that? Is it in the message?

The address? Its in your signature. The signed message is just to verify that indeed I send you coins. You can verify it with core (File -> verify message) to make sure its correct.

The stuff about faucets is from experience, I started grinding them for weeks and months when I got to know about bitcoin. They have some downsides[1] esp. when you are starting out. I wanted to spare you that.

Wow, thanks Shorena - that came in quickly. Do you want a .com domain name in exchange, or shall I send it back to make sure that sending works?

or get a coffee for it, its yours.

I've been looking for faucets, and I can't find any sensible info about them. Also I suspect it might take a while to get enough to be transferred. Maybe I'll just find someone in the UK willing  to make a small sale, or I'll sell a .com domain name or something.

They usually require you to hit a certain amount first yes. Its not feasible currently to transfer 60(00) satoshi. Anything below 10k satoshi is essentially eating a very high transaction fee to get transfered. Anything below 2730 satoshi is considered dust and might have problems getting a confirmation even if you pay a high fee for it.

Global max is 4000 AFAIK. So its for all. Height is 42px IIRC.

Hi to all,

I have 3 tx don't confirmed from 12 december...
well 2 weeks  Shocked ... and nothing... I can't get a confirmation.

What can I do?

You can keep rebroadcasting (depending on the wallet its automated) or try to get the network to forget about the TX and redo them with high fees.

Which wallet do you use?

I use multibit and these tx are linked to 3 bets in DB site... then I don't want basically be avoided...
Yes are winning bet (not too much) but....  Roll Eyes

So rebroadcasting.

Take the TX ID search it on blockchain.info. Once you found them add "?format=hex" at the end of the url, like here[1]. This gives you the raw TX. You can rebroadcast them via these[2] services.

Did a quick search and found this[1] guide. Skimmed it and it looks fine to me. Just skip step 0, the rest guides you through installation, key generation and pubkey importing. You will mostly use kleopatra.

[1] https://www.deepdotweb.com/2015/02/21/pgp-tutorial-for-windows-kleopatra-gpg4win/

Thank you for the guide but how can I unload my key from keybase to gpg4win? https://keybase.io/kingaltcoins

Can you help me please?

Nope sorry, never had a keybase.io account.

If you want the pubkey in armor, it's always here: https://keybase.io/kingaltcoins/key.asc
Or did you generate the keypair directly on keybase and you want to export it?

From my understanding they generated the keypair on the server and want to export it into a local gpg4win/kleo.

What is the scope of this thread?  Huh

I quote, if you get hacked you can refer to this quote and sign a message with the address to have it restored.

Hi Shorena,

Thank you for your feedback. It is very informative. So it seems a 58 character private key does exist as a BIP 38 private key?

No, I did not receive a password. I tried to import on blockchain and also asked for the passphrase after I entered the private key.
The seller only sent me a public key (watch only) and private key. I unfortunately thought that was all I needed as I wasted many hours trying to figure it out with google searches and messing with bitcoin core. Huge lesson learned the hard way I guess you could say.
-snip-

Yes, its a method to protect paper wallets. Its common to store bitcoin such that the private key is on paper, a silver/gold/etc. coin or other methods. The problem with that is that someone might see the private key and use it. All coins would be lost. BIP38 is a way to protects such a private key with a password. If blockchain.info asks you for a password its very likely that what you got is indeed a protected private key. If was transported by mail it makes sense to load the bitcoin at a later date as well. Try to contact the seller, it could have been a security scheme and not a scam attempt.

This guide is awesome and explains "signing a message" in very easy way and in detail..i wonder why this thread is not a sticky Cheesy
@shorena Have you considered talking to admin to make this thread a sticky so that no newbee look here and there asking for this "what is signing a message" question?

There was a thread asking for it to be stickied, yes. The answer was something along the lines of "we cant sticky all good threads", maybe an overview thread could be stickied. That wasnt stickied either. Just keep spreading it around Smiley
