^perfect response, thank you Smiley I am just used to layouts that draw the heat from the surface of the chip, not the underside

wonderful

i might be entirely wrong, but doesnt the big aluminum heatsink TYPICALLY get placed on the side of the board housing the ASIC chips, rather then the bottomside which (im guessing) is nothing but solder points and circuit paths? generally, you dont try to dissipate heat from the other side of the PCB. or are the chips on both sides of the board?
3864  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 02, 2013, 04:41:30 AM
The miner is currently running on an already loaded residential house power circuit, while sharing a Back UPS ES 550 with another desktop machine.

If I were you, I would plug it right into the grid, or into a UPS that outputs true sine wave AC.

An APC Back UPS ES outputs nasty noisy square wave AC that isn't real good for things.  I wouldn't run a computer on one myself, much less a rare and expensive ASIC miner.

I also would not trust the power measurement taken by a kill-a-watt with it plugged in through that UPS.

agreed.

also, i think its fair to see that the PSU efficiency isnt a necessary factor in the announced power use. When you say a 7970 draws 400w, do you account for the PSU efficiency? its a fairly uncommon testing value.

should be 3*[power per board]+[control board]+[fan power] to identify the system draw. PSU issues can be fixed if the end-user feels like paying for a better PSU
3865  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC V1 hashing module ordering information on: February 01, 2013, 08:29:51 PM
Can you buy just a 22GH/s module, and run it connected to a PC?

you would need the control board/module. the power obviously comes from a standard PSU, but it uses some ribbon cable (IDE?) to communicate between the boards and a control board that then has ethernet connectivity.

Photos and video
Prior posts included photos.  No video was taken.  And the machine is performing its intended function -- receiving bitcoins to validate data -- so it will not be ripped apart for further pictures (however I want to see that, just as much as you). It is expected that upcoming press events and other third parties will provide this.

Horse shit!  Angry

aww Sad

understandable though, taking an hour to tear it down and [hopefully] reassemble it correctly would cause him several bitcoins of lost productivity and potentially mess up his unit.

i want detailed pics and specs and all that glory tho!
3867  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Facts Based Thread on: January 30, 2013, 05:27:29 PM
lets see:

BFL: appeared at CES with a box of fans. has pictures of casings and LOTS of boxes of fans. pictures of hardware also, but no operational details/demos because no chips are ready yet.

AVALON: has 1 box of fans, with no confirmation of what is inside it. pictures of boards and a single questionable image of operational details from a week ago. Claims to have shipped but no tracking numbers or customers who have received.

3868  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: January 30, 2013, 05:21:32 PM
So, we have a problem. Avalon need the money before this weekend starts to place orders for the parts. For those unbelievers, let's hope Jeff receives his unit before batch #2 starts selling on EST 9:00 AM, January 31st, 2013.

Would you be able to send this out officially to all those who have subscribed to your mailing list?

i got an email yesterday to confirm the upcoming pre-order.

my initial reaction was to get my bitcoin wallet ready and prepare for camping out in the waitline, but since theres no proof of asic delivery yet theres no way im throwing $1500 into an unidentified, irretrievable bitcoin address

im not that stupid
3869  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 29, 2013, 04:07:08 AM
How can you actually buy one of these Avalong ASIC miners?

I went to their website and it is just an email subscription list or whatever. Are they even for sale?

3870  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 29, 2013, 03:52:14 AM
Yes, really.  Have you seen an Avalon in real life?  Plenty of people have seen OUR box of fans in real life.  No one has yet seen an Avalon in person.  So yes, we have more than Avalon currently.

I mean, shit, our box of fans has 18 fans, a power supply, a Nexus 7 tablet and some trays to put your pies on (to cool them with the fans of course) ... what's Avalon got?  A picture of two fans and what appears to be a power supply and a few sheets of metal and some screws.

interesting point. in terms of released info, BFL would seem ahead (if avalon units aren't shipped).

In terms of size, at this point all people want is the power. 2, 3 gens into this technology and both companies will be performing to size/heat specs. right now, its about which $XXX gets the most GH/s soonest

3871  Other / Off-topic / Re: The Inaba vs PuertoLibre Bickering thread on: January 26, 2013, 10:10:21 PM
the threads should be informative, not used for personal bickering and tug-of-war. Ive seen WAY too many posts by the two of you (others are guilty too, including myself at times) that have <20% relevance to the topic at hand, often 0%.

That is the reason why the BFL thread is 130 pages long, because inaba wants to insult critics and get involved in arguments. The avalon thread has [generally] been more on-topic, and is many pages shorter.

@PuertoLibre
@Inaba

Is it possible, that you open your own thread to discharge your dispute?
It stinks slowly, that you fill up each thread with your fight garbage!
Thanks in advance!

hopefully we can get this thread back on topic (AVALON for those who have seemingly forgotten) and let these guys cockstrut elsewhere

Figured someone has to step in and get both these guys but of the ASIC threads, where the majority of posts are offensive, insulting, or downright childish. Its gotten to the point where I think we have all realised that you guys are not trolling, and are actually immature enough that you need a shared time-out corner.
3874  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 26, 2013, 07:07:33 PM
Yes, because keeping tabs on a competitor's thread is "following PuertoLibre around."  heh... god you are such an idiot I just can't believe it sometimes.

Yet you say exactly the same. Thank you for admitting you are an idiot.

Really?  Can you show me where?  Please point out where I have followed you around to an unrelated thread, posting on a unrelated topic that has nothing to do with me or my company

geez you are a drama queen. There's no reason why you cant post in the avalon thread, just like PL obsessively posts pithy things in the BFL thread. The fact that you guys are using threads to bicker with oneanother is just dumb.

PuertoLibre looks like a troll, and you clearly fall for his bait.
Inaba, you demonstrate NONE of the traits i desire in an employee or public representative of a company. You go wildly off-topic, insult people frequently both in and outside of the BFL thread, and IMHO have nothing to back up your sh*tty attitude with because your product is still [at least] several weeks away from shipping, following MONTHS of delays.

Bitsyncom is doing things right as i see it. He posted some crucial info, answered some questions, and dissapeared again presumably to go work on the manufacturing, packaging and shipping of the AVALON product. The lack of photos means nothing to me, because it would meaningless to post them, since BFL posted thier pics months ago and yet has shipped nothing. Real photographic evidence will come from the first people to receive thier ASICs and post images (and hopefully a teardown) for themselves.

HOWEVER, the lack of a tracking number is a bit odd. On the face, it indicates that units are NOT shipping out as promised and stated. maybe there is a strategy to this, and they would rather hold the numbers themselves until the day of/before delivery, so that they can surprise everyone with their 'amazing' technology. That may not be the case, but i'm comfortable playing devil's advocate to the legions of posters complaining that theres no evidence/no photos/ no pre-order list/ etc.

... and please do not quote a part of a post of mine where you have edited that quoted text ... you have edited a few of my posts ...
Come on. Don't be a prick.

If I misunderstood you— that's fine. But if you're not actually demanding that they put the code on a website, and you're not claiming they're infringing by not giving it to you— then what the heck are you posting on this subject at all for?  I certainly don't see any reason to continue to argue with you when you're just going to respond agreeing with me!  This has gone way offtopic and has basically nothing to do with Avalon's release now— I would have split off your and my posts already but didn't lest I be accused of burying them.
It has everything to do with Avalon.

Firstly, they have stated in this thread twice (and on their web site) that they will release the source code - but they still haven't.
Of course there is no license requirement for them to do that yet - but it is a concern IMO for them to state that they will and still have not done it.
The reason for the concern is again ... as I have already stated ... that they MUST already have the source code UNLESS they are shipping devices that do not work.

If they already have the source code (i.e. the shipped devices do work) then it is VERY disconcerting for them to say that they need to edit the source code before they will release it.
As soon as ANYONE who receives one of these shipped devices that already work, requests the source code, Avalon MUST supply the unedited code - that MUST already exist if the shipped devices do work.

I am also concerned about this due to what I consider to be an issue with the Open Source nature of the Icarus bitstream.
The Icarus bitstream, when it was originally made available, did not include all that was necessary to produce the bitstream.
I'm not sure if that was later changed or not.
Obviously, however, there was enough information in the source for others to make modified Icarus bitstream clones.
That, what I consider a shortfall, with the original Open Source Icarus bitstream, suggests to me that they might not be as gung ho about Open Source as they claim.
I'll be happy if they allay my concerns Smiley
I'm wondering why they haven't already done that.

There is also the issue of their blatant license violation of the tools provided with the Icarus DevKit as many also know.

Thus I will be keeping a VERY close eye on this issue that I have raised ... here with Avalon ... about editing the source and adhering to the cgminer GPL3 license.

Also, cgminer without source code has been released before - and it wasn't until we pointed out the license violation, that the source code was released.
Yohan did it with the Cairnsmore1

We are very much intent on not having the cgminer license violated ...

just a thought: maybe releasing the source code would "expose" the still-unrevealed extras in the avalon device, or otherwise negate the fun surprise that comes from the first pics to be posted.

also, if the code is released at the same time as the first customers receive, maybe it will help to prolong the hashrate/overclocking curve while the later orders are shipped/received
3877  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what happens if a net of bots start to create bitcoin addresses? on: January 24, 2013, 09:59:07 PM
I read that there are 2^160 possible addresses. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=24268.0

Suppose that a group (with bad intentions) start to create several addresses using bots, what happens if they exhaust all the possible addresses?

Even if they can generate 1000 billion address (10^11) per second, it will take 10^149 seconds to exhaust them. That is more time than the age of universe.

So just a little over 6000 years?

please be trolling and not serious

I think the site has "died" for 2.5 reasons:

1) the freebies have decreased HUGELY. went from 0.5mBTC per free win, to 0.0001mBTC per win. not enough to keep people in an empty room
2) the number of rooms "complicates" things. I dont think i ever saw a bet bigger then a bitcent.
2.5) turned out, once you used up your "free plays", betting an mBTC in an empty room allowed you to keep winning the 0.5mBTC payouts (before site changeup)

I made about 0.16 BTC from the site tho, with no investment of my own, so im a happy player!
