Also not mine. I may manage the finances for Bitcoin100 charity thing, but it's not my money, and the private key for that address is shared by a few different people. I may allegedly own a few thousand bitcoin, but there's really nothing out there to link it to me

Just a tip, whenever I exchange some USD into BTC, I do something like Assets:BTCWallet ฿20 @@ $384
What keystroke do you use to get "฿"? I google searched for Thai Baht, and copy/pasted the character. Sorry

Somebody apparently had a question about how I sleep at night: Rassah would have you believe that the Bitcoin 100 is purely philanthropic and is extremely proud of mentioning that they've donated a whopping 4K to charities since they started over a year ago. They have almost double that amount that Rassah would rather refund to the donators than give to charities that have proven themselves unworthy by refusing to accept bitcoin donations. I honestly don't know how these people sleep at night.
First of all, they haven't "proven themselves unworthy," they simply have no means to accept it. I can't e-mail bitcoins, or send them by post. The charity actually has to have some way to receive it for us to be able to send it. And second, the answer as to why I would rather return the money, and how I can sleep with myself afterwards, is easy: IT'S NOT MY MONEY, AND IT'S NOT UP TO ME HOW I USE OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY. Nice to know there are other people out there who, when trusted with someone else's money, would just take it and use it for whatever the hell they feel like, thinking it's ok as long as it's for charity or their own personal cause. Frankly, that sounds a lot like government with taxes and social programs, so I could see why they would think it's ok. Sorry, I have a bit more integrity than that.

The @@ tells it the total you paid for the currency and calculates the exchange rate for you (I can also use just one @ to give it the exchange rate directly). Then if I run a Ledger command with a -G or something, it tells me my gains and losses on each account. A prices command will also give me a list of exchange rates for every date available.

I was totally blasting Ledger as a crappy tool only suited for Linux command-line geeks, and was using GNUCash only, but Ledger still eventually won me over. It's still a bit of a pain to have to remember some of the commands when running reports, but the text file approach does make it somewhat easier to be more precise, and so far I've been able to find every accounting function and report that I've needed from GNUCash. Currently using Ledger for Bitcoin100.org's finances.

That coin is probably the most jaundiced, scummy coin on all the internets by now. Ewwwww

Comparing it to the alcolhol prohibition like Matonis does, doesn't make sense because it's not like Bitcoins are the only money available. The only advantage of Bitcoins to normal people is that in some cases it is more convenient and cheaper than using banks. That advantage can easily be taken away by banning money transfers to entities who buy or sell Bitcoins. Banks would probably be very happy to comply and report anyone they suspect of doing it. If the only way to buy and sell them is through Localbitcoin and similar sites, the barrier to entry will be too high for most people.
Money in offshore tax havens is somewhat difficult to deposit, and doesn't need to move very often, yet it still provides a very useful service. Bitcoin's "offshore tax heaven" status simply can't be beat, so at the least that will still continue. There's also the issue that any ban on Bitcoin will be thought of as a stupid law that bans something that doesn't really hurt anyone (it's just digital internet tokens you can use on gambling sites or to buy internet services, what's the big deal?). As such, people will likely think the law is not fair, and will ignore it, just as they do with file sharing and downloading music/movies. The more laws like these that gets passed, the more everyone will become a criminal, and the less people will think of laws, since they're already breaking them, anyway.

the guy is 4 million dollars richer! He's not. They took his money back, since he didn't get them legitimately.

This is why I have liquidated my position in Bitcoins. There is very little upside going forward. No forward moves of late have any traction whatsoever and demand continues to lag. Way too little upside for such a risky proposition so my advice is to move into dollars. Only a significant change in the economy could alter this forecast.
You want to make a bet on bitcoin never reaching $20 again ? I'm pretty sure he's long gone. Last post of his was over a year ago...

I doubt a salary would help, as I can't see this org earning enough to be able to pay one that anyone would find worthwhile. Getting donations has obviously become a problem too. And now with BTC1 being close to $20 again, I doubt we'll get many BTC1 per person pledges. Maybe 0.1BTC. I honestly hope not to see any 5BTC ones again, as that's a bit of a ridiculous amount now.
So, although I'm willing to keep helping with the accounting side of things, I don't know how to overcome the low fundraising and organization issues.

But this just raises the larger issue of American gun culture – and yes, it is a culture. You get a certain crowd at the Dulles gun show just like you get a certain crowd at Anthrocon.
Wait, what? EDIT: Looked through that blog a bit more. This piece of his is just painful to read http://atlas-shirked.blogspot.com/As for the stupid "economics article," turns out he's an Psych/English major, so that should explain that...

This idea is still suffering from not having anyone in a distinct leadership position. I could take over, but it's not a position I want or am interested in. So, unless Phinn gets some free time to actually take the reigns again, or finds someone else to take the lead, I would vote for closing shop and returning whatever we have in holdings as well within a month or two. There just doesn't seem to be all that much support for the idea right now, both from the charities and from the users here.
