3881  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum can't handle "send to pubkey" inputs on: April 27, 2022, 11:50:58 AM
Does Electrum simply not care about the few (but highly funded!) old addresses out there? Or am I missing something?

I've found here an explanation.
From my understanding P2PK does not translate clearly to an address so we could say it's that the one who has received the funds.
3882  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Wirex- Bitcoin Debit Card | Buy Bitcoin | Mobile Banking | Send Money on: April 27, 2022, 11:35:08 AM
Seems like everyone abandoned this service, or everyone is happy and they have nothing to complain in this topic, which of course it's not my case.

I still have the card, but don't use it much. Although it seems to behave much better than Binance card, the later one is much cheaper to use (although one may want to wait for higher price to sell Bitcoin).
And yes, those WXT rewards are simply useless.
Still, unless the card didn't expire, I don't see any good reason to throw it away, not yet, as long as there's no monthly fee.
3883  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core 23.0 Released on: April 27, 2022, 11:29:29 AM
Hi achow101 ,

I admire your good work for the bitcoin community.

Regarding wallet updates, may be change the pinned thread subject from "Bitcoin Core 22.0 Released" to "Bitcoin Core wallet update Releases" etc... and you can keep posting the updates there only  Roll Eyes

Always the new update threads like this 23.0 thread untraceable unless one go in to the last post under the pinned thread and no one will go there by seeing the subject as 22.0 (old) releases.

The Bitcoin Core updates are also announced in the news area on (more or less) the top of the forum pages. You can always find there the latest version.
So all those interested indeed, cannot miss it.
3884  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Trying to get into mining on: April 27, 2022, 10:06:33 AM
I don't trust it.
The Ebay page, in some place it tells it's a Scrypt miner (meaning LTC, DOGE, ..), in other place it tells Ethash.
I don't know if the seller has no idea what's he's doing or it's plain scam, however, I'd be wary.

However, all this is altcoin mining related, so you better ask about it in altcoin mining area.
3885  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Watch-only wallet on: April 27, 2022, 08:34:45 AM
thanks for your guides. hardware wallet is expansive Ledger and trezors.

what about to use any linux distro on Virtualbox as cold wallet? u can turn there off internet forever. Is that good?

VirtualBox-like solutions are considered not safe enough for cold storage, since malware on the underlying OS can record every move.
But if you're knowledgeable enough for VBox, you can easily use an USB stick with Live Linux as cold storage, as long as you always remember to unplug your network cable before booting from the stick. Even more, Tails OS provides a pretty good solution for this.
3886  Economy / Economics / Re: Russian Gas ban - A problem for Europe or suicide for Russia? on: April 27, 2022, 06:54:03 AM
Russia built a mousetrap called russian oil and gas.

Well said. The thing is that European politicians made it even worse by not thinking it through with their (well intended, awfully implemented) green deal.
Now it depends on how the things go. The "gas for Rubles" was a bad move from Russia and the continuation with closing the pipe for certain countries is even worse for them.

Yes, Europe will suffer for some years (which will, interestingly, helps USA, which is exactly Russia's nightmare), but it will force them/us allow actual competition between the various possible suppliers, no longer favoring Russia. This will make, on long term, Europe stronger, USA richer and Russia poorer.
This, together with the full display of what's behind the image of the "great" Russian army, might cause long term troubles for Russia (and Japan is already hinting that, almost trying to force WW3).
3887  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Craig Wright Proving He’s not Satoshi- AGAIN on: April 27, 2022, 06:44:30 AM
Here’s a recent video [~snip~]
Let’s see how many lies we can point out and discuss..
https://youtu.be/BnPiH6OLLa0

Sorry, but no, I won't watch that interview.
The more the people watching such videos, the more the chance more such videos will be made, helping the troll get more attention/popularity.
(Also I expect my brain hurt from those lies Cheesy)
3888  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fort Worth Becomes First City to Mine Bitcoin on: April 27, 2022, 06:13:34 AM
Is that double standard or are people not understanding what the news is saying?
It is the government that is running this mining program. Do we really want the governments start mining bitcoin and amass hashrate? I don't think anybody in bitcoin world wants that! Or maybe to some people, US government is an exception Cheesy in that case think of it as maybe Russian or Chinese government start doing this next.

Actually it's not so much unexpected for governments actually mine Bitcoin, just I expected this happen much later, when they have exposure (reserves) in bitcoin.
While I agree it's not a great news on long term, it's still a very small move, which, for now, can increase the trust of average Joe in Bitcoin (which, as already happened, can be seen as good). I would be more scared if they (also) start using their own mining pools where they can filter out unwanted transactions.

So, yeah, I have mixed feelings. I think that it's, unfortunately, quite a normal move, after all.
3889  Other / Archival / Re: Harm to the environment from BTC mining - a fiction? on: April 27, 2022, 04:49:28 AM
Of course, I'm advocating this for some time already: large scale miners should build their own (green) energy production facilities. This will ensure they can operate for very long, no matter how low the block reward will drop and would also shut off the political trolls.

Why should they make a large and risky investment if they can just look for existing electricity supply? If Bitcoin crashes and mining becomes unprofitable, what would they do with their power plants? They would be able to sell only a small fraction of their capacity at best.

They don't get much, if anything, from such investments, and only take risks.

You must be kidding...
Investing into mining devices is much riskier (on "mining gest unprofitable" path) and the businesses I am talking about probably have at least hundreds of them. More ASICs = bigger hash rate = less profitable mining.
On the other hand, if they invest into their green energy facilities they:
* will produce their own energy and mining is never unprofitable on free energy (of course, after ROI)
* if mining is no longer profitable they can sell electricity, or sell the electricity production facilities, or even sell the land and the panels
Investing into their own energy can easily be a better step and with more forward thinking than buying more ASICs.
3890  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Watch-only wallet on: April 26, 2022, 02:26:10 PM
You can not setup a watch-only with 2FA wallet on Electrum, you can only use 'standard wallet'.

I am not that sure it's not possible, I've founds this tutorial on how to do it:
https://bitcoinelectrum.com/creating-a-watch-only-version-of-your-2fa-wallet/

However, if this doesn't work or it's too difficult, and if OP wants to drop the "also to be able to get new address" functionality, he can always make a watch only wallet based on the one address he knows (or a list of addresses).

Edit: I see OP has standard wallet, then getting the master public key is easy. The rest of the answer still stands.
3891  Economy / Services / Re: Make crypto prediction and get a dollar! on: April 26, 2022, 01:04:37 PM
On every prediction you made I will give you $1. Use your Bitcointalk as name.

Make predictions that make sense. Don't spam. Write some text why you think it's going to happen.

Don't add prediction on coins that already that has 5 or more.

Use the ''members'' box for it.

You can do unlimited predictions for coins on the top 100.

First of all, it's an interesting way to promote your website!  Cheesy I genuinely like it. (I guess that this change in your site may have been the reason for being down when I've checked it earlier today).

Now, about the rules.. I am not sure I've understood: will you basically pay about 5 x [number-of-listed-coins] dollars (total), or will you pay only the predictions that will come true?
I'm asking because the not-very-clear rule may make people spam your website ("you can make unlimited predictions" is kinda contradicting the "don't spam" rule).
3892  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Please could someone help me with my bitcoin on: April 26, 2022, 10:54:15 AM
Hello. Please excuse my lack of knowledge using a forum and a bitcoin. I was hoping someone could help me. I have a physical bitcoin that I bought in 2012. It has a hologram on the back which is intact. I was hoping that someone could help me to check the coins validity and help with how I can use the keys to put it in a wallet.

Thanks for any help possible.

If it has the hologram intact it may be more valuable as it is and you may get more money on the "entire package" than just cashing in the coins coming from the private key (plus the fork coins).
Of course, it will be a bit more hassle to get it sold/sent properly.

I would start with asking for help/info in the Collectibles area.
3893  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: I open my own crypto site (CMC alternative) on: April 26, 2022, 09:37:18 AM
Do you think is better to remove the second search box?

Sorry, I was away with (very) limited internet.
Imho the two search boxes can easily be seen as a mistake, no matter what's the intended logic. So imho it's better to remove. But it would be even better to ask for more opinions.

I wanted to take a look again now, but no luck: Cloudflare said that the website has error.
3894  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Installing my own Electrum server on: April 26, 2022, 09:34:33 AM
My own wallets don't have large histories. From time to time I like to do some blockchain analysis or kind of "investigations", nothing professional. With electrs when you stumble over Bitcoin addresses with large histories you quickly run into trouble. You can tweak electrs to some extend, but to me it seems it's not well suited for this OR I never was able to figure it out how to do it with electrs.

Although I do look for transactions and history now and then, I usually* have txindex=1 in Bitcoin Core and I look at a block explorer - BTC RPC Explorer (the only one I could make to work well on top of electrs), but all went well, with no surprises.

* Unfortunately because of the rather small HDD I'm using, I go right now without txindex until I decide what to do next/go for bigger HDD.
3895  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many CODERS has Bitcointalk? on: April 26, 2022, 09:03:02 AM
-   How many people, that are coders (*) are on Bitcointalk?

I went for this, although indeed the question is rather unclear; also it must be mentioned that there are many "levels" of being a coder and many coders didn't touch the code of Bitcoin or don't even know in-depth how it's working.

But, on the other hand, it can prove (or not!) whether bitcoin attracts mostly IT-related people. Imho that assumption is no longer true, for at least 4 years now.
3896  Other / Archival / Re: Harm to the environment from BTC mining - a fiction? on: April 26, 2022, 08:29:12 AM
There's a problem that Bitcoin creates demand for electricity, and coal/gas power plants come to fill this demand.

In my country, for example, regenerable electricity is considered unreliable (which is correct, since wind and sun don't work 24/7) and (unfortunately) their solution is to still cover the industrial need for electricity from reliable sources (coal, nuclear, maybe hydro). And the surplus is sold/get rid of.
That's the actual green energy: something many countries don't know what to do with. Still they blame bitcoin mining for not being green. Isn't that hypocrisy?

Of course, I'm advocating this for some time already: large scale miners should build their own (green) energy production facilities. This will ensure they can operate for very long, no matter how low the block reward will drop and would also shut off the political trolls.
3897  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: spend twice more Bitcoins while waiting the block to be verified? on: April 26, 2022, 08:07:21 AM
Thanks for the explanations. Not that I want (or I can) to try double-spend, it is just how I learn this complex topic. By asking dumb questions sometimes and questioning myself first of all. Anyway thanks

No problem and sorry if I was a bit harsh, it did sound to me like you want to insist into wrong direction, especially after getting so many answers covering the topic.
At least I am kinda sure now that you've got the point.
3898  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Installing my own Electrum server on: April 26, 2022, 07:54:10 AM
I run my Bitcoin Core and Lightning node and my personal Electrum Server on a Raspi 4B with 8GB RAM using RaspiBlitz (I'm not a fan of Umbrel). I ditched electrs and switched to Fulcrum for its speed and ability to deal with large address histories far better than electrs could. Syncing Fulcrum took considerably longer than electrs but this is needed more or less only once after initial install of Fulcrum.

RaspiBlitz runs smoothly with Fulcrum, though you need to do some tweaking as Fulcrum Electrum server isn't yet nicely integrated into RaspiBlitz. On average the Raspi consumes only ~5-6W power. I'm very happy with Fulcrum!

It's the first actual-use review I see for Fulcrum, although I've searched for such posts ~6+ months ago.
Thank you for that!

The point is that's the only Electrum server that seems to have Windows binaries. Maybe Windows users will start looking into this one too.

3900  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: spend twice more Bitcoins while waiting the block to be verified? on: April 25, 2022, 08:01:03 AM

In theory you can try that, although in reality your wallet won't allow it (eg. if you try from the same wallet). But, since the seller will wait until the transaction is confirmed, he's safe. After one of the transactions in confirmed, the other one(s), trying to spend coins you don't have, will not be confirmed and will also be discarded.

This! So it is the wallet that makes sure that I won't be able to spend more than I have. But, what if I develop my own wallet that will not check my balances and eventually allow me spend more than I have?

I've explained it all, you chose to understand what you want.
The wallet helps you not make mistakes. The blockchain ensures you're not play smartass.
