word of advise: if you dont want this coin to be ruled by the give away thread spammers, weight the giveaways by activity * average_post_length. Then do a quick check of their post history to make sure they pass the turing test.

okay... I leave it to you to design a fair distribution.

If i do a ton of math to figure out how to weight it effectively for fair distribution (which i think i have a pretty good idea how to do) than i would need to know that there was some able programmer who was actually dedicated to keeping the code maintained.

so i guess this means that all of the flaws were found and nxt is officially open source software?

I post on page 1000 from dairy queen, go back to the hotel, get up at zero dark thirty to go to the airport and spend the day in threee different jets getting home, check this thread, and 55 pages later everything is total bat crap crazy.

Hell yeah on getting listed at last on a first tier exchange and a 100 % price rise.

But this latest "somebody got my NXT" has pegged my paranoia needle again.  As far as I am concerned we have yet to get to the bottom of a single incident here even tho we tarred and feathered EpicThomas.  Something is STILL going on and it is bad.

I will say this again and again until I get Dev concurrence.  WE NEED TO IMPLEMENT AN OPTION TO ISSUE AN ACCOUNT FREEZE CODE BLOCKING OUTGOING NXT TRANSFERS THAT GETS CARRIED ALONG IN THE BLOCKCHAIN AS A MESSAGE UNTIL RESCENDED BY THE ACCOUNT OWNER VIA A SECOND DIFFERENT PASSWORD.

More later I gotta unpack and get caught up at home after being gone two weeks.  GO NXT!!!

Consider NEX  -  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=422052

Don't forget about ME TOO https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=422139.0 and NEM https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=422129.0 as well Smiley

Let's see how a "Free" crypto (initially) develops to one that has worth   Smiley

all this is going to mean is that scammers and give away thread spammers will be the power houses of this new currency. rather than people who actually payed for its development.

not a bad idea. zero cost buy in is smart. lets see where it goes. the more competition the better.

Good luck with this. I purchased some NXTs in an exchange and tried to install the wallet. Talk about unintuitive. I sold them back. Maybe this will turn out alright for you all, but right now NXT makes Bitcoin seem user-friendly.

its not designed to be user friendly. its designed to be innovative. user friendliness will come later. i was in exactly your same position ages ago with namecoin, before there was any thing else other than a command line interface for it. boy what a mistake it was to dismiss it on the same grounds you just dismessed nxt. i hope you dont make that same mistake.

It's funny the impact this exchange has had on the price, If you look up their official thread on here it's actually quite worrying people are sending money there!!

wait until vircurex adds it Shocked
3914  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT Ought to be Taken Seriously on: January 19, 2014, 03:09:38 AM

Why it's NOT LISTED on TOP 3 Crypto exchanges ?

All of the other coins are bitcoin copy cats. That means that for the exchange all they have to do plug them in to their existing framework. Nxt is a completely new crypto written completely from the ground up with brand new code. This means that, in order for the exchanges to include Nxt, they would have to write their own new code in order to be able to support it.

I need to learn how to cook the pufferfish safely while checking my raspberry Pi bitcoin wallet at sea.

Thats the spirit!

Its strange to me that libertarians tend to be so committed to a centralized approach to seasteading. We just need to buy sailboats and pick a meeting place. Grin
3916  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Trading Thread for Nxt :: Descendant of Bitcoin on: January 18, 2014, 10:53:47 PM
I have 1.6 M available for selling.

how on earth have you not run out already. it seems like you must have sold more than a billion coins by now.

I don't like the concept of the rich getting richer, which is why I also dislike PoS.

I think this is why you should like PoS. With Nxt's PoS forging, the ROI is the same percentage whether you invest $100 or $100000. This is as fair as it gets. Both investments will grow at the same rate. PoW mining such as that used in Bitcoin is not this fair. Why? Because the nature of hardware/electricity costs and economy-of-scale gives an advantage to the rich. For instance, they can buy 100 or 1000 miners (or manufacture their own!) for a much better deal than the little guy who can only afford one.

economies of scale is a real problem for pow cryptos. a person who invests 10 billion gets WAY more than 10 times as much hashing power out of that investment as someone who invests 1 billion.
3918  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 18, 2014, 10:43:43 PM
Omg, someone cleared 3 of my accounts....

I used 256bit keys generated by Keepass 2. I am using  NRS 0.5.8 that installed today and downloaded from nxtcrypto.org. I am using Windows 7 Professional and am running Avira and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The NXT was transferred about half an hour ago, also while i was forging.

My PC was running unlocked but i can be 99.99% sure that no one had access to it physically. So I don't really know how this happend?!? It can't be bruteforce right?
My accounts:
8423671173148912884   107,217
12345678612257264594   71
13486646175575465553   998
The NXT are now in this account:
696356957947686421 Balance Total    :   108,286 NXT

Fuck me...

Btw the password of the third account was for example: af5c73ca7cf5f25ffa3b6b1689f40aaf60fd040b0de298c1ca661f8602d38311

Any chance of seeing these NXT again? Sad

This is not a fully secure password. This looks very much like a Hex number. Only lower case a to f and Numbers. Something like that, even as long as it is, is cracked rather fast.

It seems someone out there is brute forcing with number chains.

I had an account which had another rather serious flaw in choice of password. It was luckily not hacked.

There is no way this can be right. If that was a true random hex number with that many digits there is no way it could be cracked easily. Can someone else input on this?

Newb here when it comes to proof of stake, but is it right to say that the rich gets richer? My shallow understanding is that the biggest wallet will get the most amount of fees..?

A person with 5 nxt only forges 5 times as many as someone with 1 nxt. Its not like there is some advantage to having a lot in that respect, its not like someone with 5 nxt gets to forge 6 times as many as someone with 1. It will only lead to stratification if people with smaller amounts of nxt don't feel that it is worth their time to forge. Ideally we will have clients some day that give no barrier to entry for someone who wants to forge with even a single nxt and so there will be no reason for him not to and so no stratification.

Right, I get that its pretty much static over time, but still the fact remains that the whales will grow bigger and bigger over time (as will everyone, but mostly the big players will scoop up the big chunks). I guess you could say that about the big miners with scrypt and sha256 as well though. In that case its pretty even and therefore proof of stake if superior because it takes less resources electricity wise. Agree with this?

Its fairly even. We will probably see larger actors gaining more in transaction fees than smaller ones since they will probably on average make fewer transactions from their accounts than smaller actors. You can look at it this way. If someone with 6000 nxt made 7 times as many transactions as someone with 1000 nxt and they were both forging than on average nxt would tend to flow from the larger fish to the smaller fish. If someone with 6000 nxt made 5 times as many transactions as someone with 1000 nxt than the nxt would tend to flow from the smaller fish to the larger.
