3901  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: What APIs are commonly used in crypto payment/withdrawal systems? on: July 12, 2020, 11:51:52 PM
As oss said, a more secure version would be running a full node on the payment server in order to handle the requests (or getting the server to ping another machine with the request so it can be signed).

If you're low on bandwidth however, I think it's also possible totdo the same thing with electrum (or a modified version of it) os you won't have to skim the entire blockchain to set it up - but some trade off in security has to be taken.

Also don't leave funds on the server for long and don't leave more than would be considered reasonable to lose.
3902  Economy / Economics / Re: Maintaining safety measures after pandemic for human -economical- resources on: July 12, 2020, 11:37:12 PM
My response to this will probably be: not everyone's an introvert...

Some people require physical contact from others, some people require conversations with other people to function normally/feel healthy day to day. I think for a lot of people, the past few months is going to be something they won't want to reflect on for a while.
There have been reports of a rise of non covid-linked deaths and I think the UK put the figure at 20000 from people not wanting to go to hospital to people commiting suicide because they're away from people for so long and don't want to go through the uncertainty. Not to mention a lot of socail media and annacdotal evidence of people who thought they wree being helpful by shouting at people for gathering with friends and socialising because they were being radicalised by their work or by the mainstream media (which sought to over dramaticise everything)...

More recently though, the idea of wearing medical grade face coverings after the pandemic is over could be a choice a lot of people will be able to make. Non medical grade stuff, I imagine, will have little effect on anything.

3903  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Meter - Real-time analysis based on data, psychology and whales movement on: July 12, 2020, 11:28:24 PM
Have you tried working out how accurate you are? I couldn't see it in your thread...

It might be handy for your site to keep a log aned see how good it is for each level of reading (for the 7 levels). TA is generally considered 70-90% accurate depending on what you're looking at. Something more than 50% could still be worth a shot for some good at risk managment that want to look for other things when there are no good patterns to follow.
3904  Other / Meta / Re: Hide reported posts? on: July 12, 2020, 11:22:35 PM
This is a bad idea because not all Newbies come here to scam. Many newbies come here to post the link of their services and come with a marketing point of view for their legit projects. We cannot disallow newbies to post the links. There are other methods to tackle the scam by reporting and tagging which is also efficient method.

Afaik newbies aren't already allowed to post in the marketplace section?

I'd maybe add not letting newbies lock their own threads either as soon as they're created
I suggested this on the other thread where the scammers created multiple topics across various boards and locked the threads immediately after making them to censor any reply;
A suggestion is to restrict topics from being locked until xx hours after it was made. This could be limited to brand-new/newbie accounts
This would not really affect the regular users and if they do get the answer to their query quicker than the restricted time they can report their posts to be locked by mods.
There can be two new rules implemented for Newbies account which can solve most of these issues.  First newbies should not be allowed to create a self moderated thread and secondly newbies should not be allowed to lock the thread for 48 hours. Completely denying to lock the thread created by newbie can also lead to spam posts so 48 hrs is a reasonable time.

Yeah mods are pretty responsive to thread locking and once someone gets an answer, people don't really have much of a reason to post unelss they can see the problem hasn't been solved... And a 12-48 hour window would seem reasonable as *most* requests are resolved within that time.

This does not mean that the old methods no longer work, on the contrary, if we believe the research that says that only one scam who used the name Elon Musk achieved as much as 215 BTC in less than 3 months. And it's just about sending a certain amount to an address with the promise that you will get double the amount back.
I was thinking more the scam that was documented quite a bit on the meta section yesterday where users have to install plugins and such. Some novices to cryptocurrency may come here thinkng they know a lot about stuff when really they're probably the most at risk.

There's the curve of perceived intellect v actual intellect that goes a bit like having a sheer climb, a sheer drop off and a steady climb back up to below original perceived intellect. Thus it'd be making the drop quite a bit less dramatic for malware scams or similar.

It might be wise to have some kind of warning above every post written by a newbie, and to protect those who are not logged in, maybe newbie accounts and their posts should be hidden?

I had thought of something like this but I'm sure the investor based games board has this and some newbies just won't read what's directluy in front of them if it doesn't look like part of the thread - maybe it could be preseneted as part of the message like is done with PMs...

It would be abused or misused, even by those who have earned lots of merit with high report quantity/accuracy. For example,
1. posts which suggest that certain faketoshi might be real Satoshi
2. suggestion by newbie that looks like misleading/fake suggestion, unless you actually understand the topic

I don't think a 4 hour block on posts would do very much. I also had a draft of my response to this which said that this could be stealthily implemented so no one (or very few) actually know about it.

(slightly off topic: for all we get people talking about how they want bitcoin to be fully anonymous - and tbh it would be an improvement - it's kinda ironic loads of people want to know who the original founder was. Although I was probably curious at first).

Not allowing users to post link is a great suggestion!

Not possible though. A newbie could always skirt the rules like posting as such:
link.com
link[.]com
"link.com" (remove quotes)

...and the list goes on.

EDIT: Forgot that post was a sarcasm Grin

I label my sarcasm on this forum.
However, I did realise the suspicious link removed tags are still in force in a lot of the forum (but it doens't pick up everything - hence why I thought it was an idea to make this thread).
Unless you're saying your post was sarcasm.

Also trying to block out a dot will end up with people having trouble following the link and might make them wonder why someone's done that in the first place...

Am a little bit outdated but isn't this what the giant red flag system at the beginning of scammy topic is for?
I imagined the topic was about hiding the reported posts in your side to avoid reporting it twice by mistake.

I thought these warnings were only given in the marketplace, where newbs can't post. Also warning messages and trust flags aren't completely obvious (though I check people's feedback on a person rather than anythign else so I might not be the best to ask about this one).

A newbie (or anyone) scamming is not a reason to report a post, and posts reported as such will be marked as bad.
I have about 8 reports to prove otherwise and I'm not an avid reporter.

I might be supportive of the ability of certain users to be able to override the "lock" status of threads opened by low-level users, if the purpose is to warn about a possible scam, or high risk proposition.
This is another potential solution that might work too. Although it might also be abused and commenting on a topic might desuade a mod from deleting the topic (but I dunno).
3905  Other / Meta / Re: Hide reported posts? on: July 12, 2020, 04:05:23 AM
What you are proposing is like having a quarantine room or board where all reported posts made by newbie members with alleged malicious links will go. Is it not enough to report, tag and flag these members? How about not allowing them to post links?

Not allowing users to post link is a great suggestion!

I'd maybe add not letting newbies lock their own threads either as soon as they're created so other members can warn of what's happening. Removing posts based on them being reported and awaiting moderation is done on a lot of other sites and I don't think it censors the user from anyone but other new users once the post has been reported and I did stipulate the user had to be of high rank and high quality of reports... Just something to consider if it were to be added discretely....

It should be the wider bitcoin community's job to ensure that new users start their path on a positive experience if we want people to stay and mods are pretty fast so the thread being returned to its normal state would only be a few hours max.
3906  Other / Meta / Hide reported posts? on: July 12, 2020, 01:18:09 AM
Not sure how I'd enact this but could we have a system whereby if a topic is made by a newbie who intends to scam or something and it's reported can it be hidden from all members who aren't full members (it could also require a reporter to have earnt more than a certain merit threshold or have a certain % accuracy ie 80% or above).

Why now?
I think at the moment we're alright with a lot of things as there aren't many newbies coming here and the flow is probably pretty constant but I think it might be helpful for if we see another spike in the btc price and people become more interested and lose all or some of their funds to scammers. Scamming tactics are becoming more advanced and use things such as plugins as apposed to old versions of scams that were ponzis or asked you to send funds to an address - now consent has been completely removed and it could scare people away from the crypto space.

It also gives an incentive for non mods to scour the patrol page for anything worthy of deletion.

The thread could either then - once handled by a mod - be returned back to the list of threads or be bumped to the top with a slight change of algorithm (or time change on the post) so it can get attention if it was incorrectly reported.
3907  Economy / Economics / Re: Biggest winner during COVID? on: July 11, 2020, 11:54:12 PM

It is weird that the UK appear to be trying to sell 2 bullion doses of the vaccine already (at least they have contracts to produce that amount from part public and part private schemes)... I think Germany and other European countries studying the virus have similar schemes. I doubt anyone would want a vaccine from China, that'd be a last resort.
I believe the WHO are not playing a vital about the COVID 19 vaccine because are not passing good information about it to the masses.
With that been said, it been awhile since follow the update news about the vaccine and the last i check the UK vaccine is yet to be endorse by WHO while the China seems to be keeping information about their vaccine.

The UK are still in a testing phase so I'd see no reason for them to pass information about the 3 vaccines being produced until they have one that works effectively...

I don't know how the who works but would cdc europa not be better suited to advise and collaborate information on vaccines within the EU (and probably the USA based on the trump administration's recent rejection of the WHO - unless that was over dramatised)...
3908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Reaches Record High Correlation to S&P 500 on: July 11, 2020, 11:48:40 PM
Yeah I think a lot of investors are just trying to get out of cash.

In theory, yes. Right now though knowing that the federal reserve are planning on distributing more stimulus money hence creating more inflation? Errr. Probably a bad idea? I'm guessing this is why gold is at it's all-time highs.

I can only call on what I know of the UK, measured inflation from the ons was at 0.14% about a month or so ago. So printing money would be reasonable to try to get it back to the 1.8% they're wanting to target.

No matter what, we'll probably see measured inflation go up next year (2-3% at least probably) , if they print as normal or extra but printing extra would provide a boost faster imo...

I dont know who's done well from the pandemic since virtually every economy has dropped by some extent... A lot of. Europe though didn't seem to drop by much. Tourism and hospitality were the major industries hit as well as the airlines for Europe and the US was mainly airlines afaik... Poorer countries seem to have nene less affected than richer countries too (unless cases are just undocumented). If it was a form of warfare I'd doubt it was china, India, europe, Japan or the americas... Unless it was a form of test or something from a country (which wouldnt be unlikely)..

But its worth noting there have been a lot of pandemics and as medicine gets better, that number will probably increase in the short term.  Extensive virus testing leads to. More viruses being produced and a greater chance of leaks in the short term imo but most viral testing will probably reduce their effects eventually either through vaccines or treatments.
3910  Economy / Economics / Re: The Decentralized Economy During COVID-19 on: July 11, 2020, 03:00:51 AM
I think defi has a yet to be fixed flaw in that it requires someone with high liquidity assets to be put up as collateral. You can't yet, even though it'd be more beneficial to, take a loan out on less collatoralised debt such as stocks afaik and you calso can't do it with real estate (I.e with a 30% deposit so you still have to 150% collateral at start).

Defi is good for releasing $ from crypto and may evolve to add better options for non smart coins like btc (with htlcs or something) but for now I'm a but skeptical as to the uses of the current stable coins. I haven't used compound but I had to convert 1300 dai before and found I could get 1320 usdc on coinbase for it which I think is a bit of a problem (but that could just be me, it's like giving a euro of change instead of a pound imo though)...

It looks like. Its just for traders now, if it expands from that then it might be good.
3911  Economy / Economics / Re: How long will it take banks to phase out physical cash completely? on: July 11, 2020, 02:05:58 AM
Of course it'll take decades. Unless the cbdc is an anonymity coin, you think politicians are going to want to get rid of cash? Even if its controlled by a central party their security might not be too hard to test to gian access to the ledgers...

There are a lot of people these days that don't have Internet afaik (or just refuse to use it or can't use it well) so I don't know how we're going to get around that problem...

I may be handy, as a first step, for a government to issue phones compatible with the currency they want to use andake them available to alpha testers... You can't just use any phone for it and some may be incompatible too. A card capable of signing information could also be more expensive than the current rfid contactless systems in place.

The good thing about cash for people is that it helps you budget and stops you spending everything, which is also the bad thing for companies and governments.

Notes at an atm here are quarenteened it's also possible to have people feed cash into systems that count the value (enough self service machines do this) and these may become more prevelant.
3912  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Bitcoin missing from wallet (perhaps!) on: July 10, 2020, 10:32:31 PM
If you have your SEED mnemonic and you had funds and you don't see any new transactions taking money out of your wallet, your funds are still probably safe. If there are no transactions in the pc wallet as apposed to this then it could mean you've just typed the seed in wrong...

The android app itself could've faced an update and caused a problem. I got the same error when installing the wrong version of the new app so those errors could be linked... Did you see a back screen before loading it up or an error message some new libraries can be used that weren't previously)...
3913  Economy / Speculation / Re: Miner's Strike! on: July 10, 2020, 10:14:23 PM

Everyone is just waiting for the mega bull market to appear out of nowhere. I don't think it works that way. But I don't discard the fact that I might be stupid  Grin

I dunno. There's a chance the 2017 spike was caused by new retail seeing what happened before and thinking it'd happen again. 2015 was extremely static price wise form what to remember.

As for miners, any sensible miner sells their coin off market. There's no need to go on an exchange. OTC will take care of it. They're a market irrelevance.

I dunno there might be some foolish enough tondump funds on the open market but yeah, weren't otc trades starting to be tracked though too or is that just a few desks that started tracking rates? I think otc btc buyers probably try to lock in a price for the month to keep the miner providing them funds too (and I think we're up more months than we're down)...
3914  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why you mustn't plagiarize on: July 10, 2020, 10:05:20 PM
If you want to reference something as a review or to start a discussion you can put the text you're copying within quote tags ie.

Code:
 [quote] [/quote]

With a link below it giving the reference of where others can find the text. You should attempt to cut quotes down using an eclipses "..." to cut out insignificant or irrelevant points to your topic.

It's a bit sad you have to tell people not to plagiarise though...
3915  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: utxo doesnt show up in wasabi on: July 10, 2020, 08:05:00 PM
Yes the transaction does show in electrum! 342a75d673d9e6b92115c616b45e5c87ebaa024595b8268a745a83fb3bf90a42

OK so this address should be yours then in the wasabi wallet: bc1qwtmuzyxa3dgr0wegflqlprffdxavm55z8ngrj5

If you have a copy of your wallet/seed or anything else they gave you to recover your funds and they came from the official site then your funds will be back in that wallet.

Did you experience anything immediately before? I saw a post on reddit about a transaction disappearing because the program crashed as it was starting up here.

Read the pinned topic ([READ BEFORE POSTING] Tech Support Help Request Format) first. Then provide the mentioned information.

OS and screenshot of the screen might be helpful but I'm not sure how much the rest of it will...
3916  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Reaches Record High Correlation to S&P 500 on: July 10, 2020, 06:24:12 PM
Yeah I think a lot of investors are just trying to get out of cash.

Observed inflation will probably rise within a year or two to be fairly high (I think this is the normal trend that its lower during recessions and higher following them). Holding cash while a market fall happens is potentially good but you cant hold it while the markets rise as you'll get left behind.
3917  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Bring back some options on android app. (ver. 4.0.2.) on: July 10, 2020, 05:38:33 PM
Actually, the latest version of Electrum on Android currently has many bugs reported on Electrum Github. Which is I think the Electrum app still in beta version?

You can check this link below to see the other bugs about the latest version of the Electrum app.

I suggest you install a known stable/working version of the Electrum app without any bugs.

You can download old version from here https://download.electrum.org

The known stable/working version is 3.3.8 so you must choose this version but before you downgrade make sure you have a backup seed/wallet.

No mine auto updated from the olaystore. So it is the most recent version of the app that's been released... Like I said it has a lot of new features so some of the bugs might be due to the usage of those...
3918  Economy / Speculation / Re: $BTC Balance on Exchanges on: July 10, 2020, 05:31:44 PM
Looks like proof of keys at the start of january was a null event then... (tiny spike down I think).

I guess people want to hold more of their funds off exchanges but I don't really know what advancements have happened. Maybe the price is stable enough that people don't need trades that have stop losses or that they found something new to do with their funds (maybe defi)?

Either that or a company like binance could have just moved funds elsewhere (it's probably quite possible). 2.5M is a lot of btc to be stored on exchanges though, it's good to see it's going down.
3919  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: utxo doesnt show up in wasabi on: July 10, 2020, 04:54:17 PM
Does the transaction show in electrum? Can you click on details and check the number of confirmations, you could also copy the txid here...

Do you know your wasabi wallet is definitely connected to the Internet and was downloaded from a legitimate source? Have you used both the wasabi wallet and the trezor before?
3920  Economy / Speculation / Re: Miner's Strike! on: July 10, 2020, 04:10:35 PM
So you think we need to jump down to $3800? Do you have a reason to think a drop was imminant?

On the contrary, I think the miners are having good thoughts about what will happen next.
They are not selling, so a larger chance of a pump could happen.

I think a lot of people are expecting an ath in q4 this financial year (Jan to Mar next year) or maybe q2, either way if I wee a miner and could find a way to finance the building or equipment to cover the electricity rates the why wouldn't you... Some predicted $300k some predicted just exceeding the ath, its still probably worth the risk especially if your funds ar eloaded with a stop loss/alerts anyway
