3921  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: If btc are in hardware wallet, then how to claim forks? on: October 05, 2022, 04:06:25 PM
Alternatively, you could wait until the hardware wallet support that fork. That way, you could avoid risking exposing your current private key/seed.
I looked at the supported assets on Ledger and Trezor as the two most popular hardware wallets today. Maybe the information can help OP to determine which of them to use based on the coins they support. Turns out that there is no difference when it comes to coin support.

Both Ledger and Trezor support the following 'popular' Bitcoin forks and forks of those forks:

  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
  • Bitcoin Gold (BTG)
  • Bitcoin Private (BTCP)

The following hard forks aren't supported by Ledger or Trezor:

  • Bitcoin SV (BSV)
  • eCash (XEC) - used to be called Bitcoin Cash ABC (BCHA)

There are other forks, but I think those above are the most talked about variants.

That's true, although BSV is BCH fork though.
Yeah, but we don't know how long OP has been involved with crypto and which assets he has used and how often to be eligible for hard forks.
3922  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: BTC MISSING INVESTIGATION - ELECTRUM WALLET on: October 05, 2022, 02:06:29 PM
Another thing I’m thinking that if it was clipboard malware, and the hacker DID have the initial address it was supposed to be sent to (bc1q…nsa), how likely do you think that the hacker would only send a small part of the funds back ? I know it wouldn’t make any sense but do you think it’s technically possible?
Well technically, if the address where you made those 2 transactions doesn't belong to your friend and someone else is in control of its private key, that other person wouldn't need to move those coins at all. It's his address and bitcoin transactions are irreversible.

1 hour after you made the last of your two transactions from Coinbase, your friend or whoever moved 0.004 BTC to another address.
https://mempool.space/tx/85006bcc25ed3ad370482f108eb8dc5ed6737a83ee0d5e0918f3ebeed39b302f

It's weird that your friend claims he only received 0.004 BTC, which is the exact amount that was moved to the bc1q...3rnsa address. Someone made that transaction and your friend claims that's all he received. Weird coincidence. Are you close enough to visit him at his home to see all this for yourself and look him in the eye when you ask about that last transaction?
3923  Other / Meta / Re: Frequent 400 Bad Request errors on: October 05, 2022, 09:31:17 AM
I haven't experienced any bad request errors lately. Nothing out of ordinary is happening with either Chrome or Firefox from the two locations I access the forum from. If it was a widespread thing, Meta would be filled with complaints and drama, but we aren't seeing it. Someone did create a thread about not being able to access Bitcointalk maybe 2-3 weeks ago, but similarly to yours, other users reported that everything was fine on their end.
3924  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: BTC MISSING INVESTIGATION - ELECTRUM WALLET on: October 05, 2022, 09:01:05 AM
Lastly, investigate if he's telling the truth.
Is your "friend" an acquaintance or just someone you have contact with?
To expand on what nc50lc is saying, if it turns out that you made a mistake somehow sending those coins, do you own this "friend" money that could incentivize him to lie to you to get more?

A clipboard malware is easy to identify. Find any address online, copy and paste it somewhere else on the infected machine, and if a different address gets pasted and not the one you originally copied, it's a clipboard malware. If the same address gets pasted, it's not. Do this on your friend's computer.
3925  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: If btc are in hardware wallet, then how to claim forks? on: October 05, 2022, 08:42:32 AM
And the first hardware wallet becomes useless after that,  as one cannot hold any btc on it for security reasons?Does it work this way?
Your hardware wallet does not become useless. The purpose of the device is to keep your seed and private keys protected from online attacks. It will do that as long as said keys haven't been entered into a hot/online wallet. If they go online, you can always generate a new seed that the hardware wallet will keep safe.

I have never claimed any forks with my hardware wallet, but I would never put my Bitcoin in jeopardy when doing so. Save your old seed (the one where your current BTC is + the forks) and create a new one. You can then move your BTC from the old to an address on the new seed. If no other coins are on the old seed anymore, you can import that seed into wallets that support the forks and claim them one by one.

But be aware of a thing called replay protection when claiming BSV. BSV doesn't have it, so unless you split your coins before, you could lose one asset when making a transaction with the other fork. Check out LoyceV's Bitcoin Fork claiming guide (and service) for more information about that.
3926  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Can multi wallet address happen on hardware wallets on: October 05, 2022, 08:17:59 AM
You started this discussion saying that you now know the difference between a closed-source and an open-source wallet. If that is true, you should know that SafePal is not open-source. If that's an essential element for you, you ought to better look elsewhere.

Some other things I remember about this hardware wallet is that it doesn't have any coin control features and apparently it doesn't allow for the creation of multiple accounts. So it's not for you. It used to have mobile-only support, no idea if they expanded to desktop devices in the meantime. The SafePal was also tagged as potentially vulnerable by a security reviewer. If you carry out a search on this forum, I am sure you will come across that report and several other threads discussing this particular wallet.
3927  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Choosing my first hardware wallet, have some questions. on: October 04, 2022, 04:37:18 PM
Could you guys please tell what manufacturers you know who is strong enough on the market. Besides Ledger and Trezor.
Open source hardware wallets.
Ledger is much more active in marketing and advertising than Trezor and they have sold more devices, but that doesn't mean their HWs are better. You can see Bud Light advertisements all over the place and they have a strong market share, but a proud European beer drinker would never take that over a proper German beer. Grin

I am a Ledger user for many years already. They are a closed-source wallet with closed-source chips and firmware.
Does the wallet do what it's main goal is - to protect your private keys and digital assets? Yes it does.
Have they started using bad/cheap quality materials? Yes, they have.
Have they (together with a 3rd-party) leaked millions of private data of their customers? Yes, they have.
Am I satisfied with my purchase? If it wasn't for the partial data leak of my private info, I would be fully satisfied. But now, the overall feeling is mediocre.

As you can see, a strong market presence doesn't mean everything.
Since you aren't considering closed-source wallets, don't look at Ledger. If I was on the hunt for a new hardware wallet, I would consider either a Trezor or a Passport Foundation Batch 2. Keep checking the hardware wallet sub because we are anticipating n0nce's review of the Batch 2 after it gets shipped to him.
3928  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 26 Hardware Wallets, compared feature by feature on: October 04, 2022, 04:04:22 PM
Too bad that the entire article wasn't replicated and posted on the forum as well. But excellent work putting all this together for everyone to read.

I noticed that you listed Ledger among those hardware wallets that support a Bitcoin-only firmware. Ledger doesn't have that. It's possible to only install the Bitcoin app on your Nano device and no other apps, but that can't be considered as a Bitcoin-only firmware. Is this a mistake or is there a reason why Ledger is on that list?
3929  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: October 04, 2022, 09:09:58 AM
Back when I asked centralized exchanges what their stance is on "taint", Gemini was one of the few sites that provided some useful information. They are US based and surely more "strict" than some competitors.

- If the funds originate from gambling activities, you aren't welcome.
- If you attempt to hide the origin of your money, you aren't welcome.

#7 Gemini

Gemini was the first exchange that said something meaningful. If the coins originate from gambling, they can’t be deposited and used on Gemini. They analyze their customers' transactions to ensure they don’t come from casinos and sportsbooks because if they do, the accounts will be closed according to their support. Attempts to “conceal” the origin is not allowed. That probably means moving them around a bit between your own addresses or maybe mixing them.

3930  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: LTC CASINO Resolved. on: October 04, 2022, 08:58:58 AM
I will not enter into an argument; thinking readers can see which of us is lying.
That would be you. Don't forget that when this story came out, I didn't trust bambolina, and I though he/she was lying. Do you remember that? Your explanations in the beginning made sense, bambolina's didn't. But as time passed, you packed a lie on top of another lie, on top of another lie, and so on.

2. We did believe the player was cheating, an investigation on our part pointed that out.
You mean the investigation you promised to make public once it's completed but you never did? That's just one of your lies.

3. The provider refused to give us the information requested.
You refused to provide the community with the information you promised you would.

All the provider did was inform us that everything was fair.
All you did was inform us that OPs winnings were illegitimate based on your own reports and a never seen report by SoftSwiss.

In doing so, they refused to provide us with some logs and did not answer specific questions.
By not making the data public, you refused to do the same thing and refused any attempts by trusted people to look at the data.

We saw the provider's actions as an evasion of responsibility.
We see your actions in the same way.

5. Considering the above, we acknowledge the winnings to be fair and apologize to the player for the inconvenience.
That's not what you said in the past. You said that your own investigation and the one conducted by SoftSwiss proves the winnings and the player are fraudulent.
3931  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Open source wallet and closed source wallet discussion on: October 04, 2022, 08:35:12 AM
I have no problem with closed source wallets if the developers pledge to compensate any coin that is stolen if there is a problem with the code...
Yeah right, of course they will. Two Playboy models will deliver the lost coins in physical form on a red pillow to your doorstep. You get to pick which models.

The only essential difference is that in the open source wallet, bugs can be identified and fixed without anyone losing their money, but this rarely happens in closed source wallets.
No one knows what happens with closed-source wallets except what they tell us.

I found a GitHub research report from December 2020. It is not directly related to Bitcoin but open-source projects in general. The report claims that the average detection of vulnerabilities is not that good and that over 4 years can pass (on average) before certain code vulnerabilities are detected. But once they are, they are fixed in a month or so. Another interesting find is that over 80% of the bugs aren't malicious in nature, they are mostly mistakes made by the developers.

Quote
On average, vulnerabilities can go undetected for over four years in open source projects before disclosure. A fix is then usually available in just over a month, which GitHub says "indicates clear opportunities to improve vulnerability detection."

However, the majority of bugs in open source software are not malicious. Instead, 83% of the CVE alerts issued by GitHub have been caused by mistakes and human error -- although threat actors can still take advantage of them for malicious purposes.

In total, 17% of vulnerabilities are considered malicious -- such as backdoor variants -- but these triggered only 0.2% of alerts, as they are most often found in abandoned or rarely-used packages.
3932  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BTC demo wallet exists? on: October 04, 2022, 08:12:15 AM
Demo is not a real thing or account but a practice account which one uses to learn how to use that particular platform but since when I know or become a bitcoiner I have not seen such that there is a practice or demo BTC.
That's exactly what the OP was asking for. A practice or testing environment where he can carry out a few transactions to understand how Bitcoin works. The actual terminology doesn't matter, and it's obvious that OP is relatively new to all this. Demo means demonstration. A testnet is a demo - a demonstration that shows what are the capabilities of Bitcoin and a particular wallet used for that testing purpose.
3933  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: LTC CASINO Resolved. on: October 04, 2022, 07:56:06 AM
I got a PM too, but only after I posted here again. In his PM he claims I Support the red Flag against him, which is a(nother) lie. I discussed my stance on both Flags 2 months ago and encourage anyone to Support the (yellow) type 1 Newbie warning Flag.
I remember. It was only after your post that I checked to see which flag I supported. At that time, my support was for the red flag. But bambolina posted and wanted to have the flag removed because the casino started paying their winnings. Since OP was satisfied and forgave LTC Casino, it made no sense to support the red flag anymore. But the newbie flag that serves as a general warning is still valid in my opinion.
3934  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: It's alright to lose and learn on: October 04, 2022, 07:26:01 AM
Judging by the post history, her friend's experience happened before August 30, and the OP admits that she had no money then - and her experience comes almost a month later, so in my understanding, both events are timed apart.
The posts aren't exactly easy to follow. In the post from 30 August, she does mention she had no money to invest back in the days when they discovered that "Bitcoin invest" platform on WhatsApp. But only a month after that, she already talks about her negative experiences with investing in crypto. Finally, in the OP of this thread, she claims to have been on the losing side for over one year. It's not easy to follow the timeline.
3935  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: LTC CASINO Resolved. on: October 04, 2022, 07:02:24 AM
I got PMed by LTC Casino to remove my support for the flag. Seeing the recent posts by TwitchySeal and LoyceV, I assume I wasn't the only one.
Bambolina hasn't made an update informing the community they received everything that was owed to them, and I sure as hell won't trust LTC Casino's words due to the long history of lying about performing various investigations in this thread.

Let's wait for OP to confirm it personally. Maybe he will do it after 3 months, who knows.
Flag or no flag, LTC Casino is and remains an untrustworthy casino that should be avoided.
3936  Economy / Gambling / Re: [Table] Withdrawal Fees and Withdrawal Amounts on Crypto Casinos on: October 04, 2022, 06:50:32 AM
I hope there will be further updates, especially to the withdrawal fees section for other supported altcoins. Of course it will also be very useful for many owners of these coins (alt-coin owners)
If you are asking about displaying withdrawal fee information for altcoins as well, that is not something I am planning to do. Some casinos support 10 or more altcoins. Keeping track of all that info is time consuming, and I don't see a good way to include all those numbers in the OP and still making it look presentable and pleasant to the eye.
3937  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Bitcoincleanup.com: Bitcoin, PoW i odbrana postojećih vrijednosti on: October 03, 2022, 01:57:41 PM

- Ako koristite društvene mreže, napišite neki post/tweet i podržite projekt. Koristite hashtagove #EcoFriendlyPoW i #EndTheFUD.
- Javite se prijatejima Bitcoina, YouTube zvijezdama, stranicama koje pišu kripto vijesti i pitajte ih žele li pomoći. Obavjestite ih o stranici.

3938  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Don’t Always Flaunt Your Wealth And Wallet Online on: October 03, 2022, 01:21:58 PM
The popularity of social media like Instagram or Facebook has made it possible for everyone to have a voice. Even those with limited thinking abilities (trying not to say stupid). There is a saying: "The goal is to be rich, not to look rich".

Sure, bragging about your wealth on online communities can attract certain types of ladies, but you can also become a target for other groups of people whose intentions are not to take you to bed, but put a knife under your throat. So be humble and down to earth. It's ok to enjoy expensive things, but have some decency. You don't need to brag about your most recent Rolex purchase online when your next door neighbor is struggling to put his kids through school.
3939  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: It's alright to lose and learn on: October 03, 2022, 01:01:54 PM
I remember you. Actually, I remembered the name. A little more than a month ago you told us how your friend invested in a fake bitcoin investment group and lost money. And now it's you who has lost money with altcoins I assume. Did all that take place in different time frames or were both of you losing money and making bad investment decisions at the same time?

Those two cases will hopefully be enough to make you see things a bit clearer from now on. One thing you should remember is you and your friend didn't lose money because of the way crypto and bitcoin works. Therefore, the industry isn't accountable and responsible for your actions. If you send bitcoin to a scammer or you get phished or hacked, it's not the network that made a mistake. In fact, the blockchain worked the way it was configured to operate. That means allowing the people who control the private keys to spend the coins protected by it.

It's important to use common sense and make decisions calmly. Don't let euphoria or FOMO trick you into making irreversible mistakes.
3940  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is Trust wallet and is it safe? on: October 03, 2022, 09:29:52 AM
Not really sure, but their developer page claims that the wallet is open-source[1]. If it's accurate, then it's definitely a positive thing.
It used to be open-source in the past, but that's no longer the case. Neither their Android nor their iOS version have publicly verifiable code.
https://walletscrutiny.com/android/com.wallet.crypto.trustapp/
https://walletscrutiny.com/iphone/com.sixdays.trust/

...but when it comes to multi wallet I haven't find a wallet that's open source and supports 100s to 1000s of tokens, if I am wrong someone should please drop a name.
I have no idea how many altcoins it supports, but Unstoppable Wallet is a mobile multicurrency wallet that is supposedly open-source.
Wallet Scrutiny wasn't able to match the binary to the source code for their iOS app but they did it for the Android version.
