3941  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [2000 GH/s] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); STRATUM=ASIC ready, low stales on: October 31, 2012, 12:59:57 AM
As far as I'm aware there is no problem with doing so, you just have to implement the merged mining process into your pool software rather than some of the older (less efficient) methods that were done when merged mining was first being pushed.

Yes, it is clearly possible, although there's no docs for merged mining process and existing software and patch to older bitcoind is mostly hack to "get it work" instead of "get it work properly". I'll discuss this in #namecoin anyway. If there'll be somebody willing to help me with re-implementation of MM and removing dependency to bitcoind patches, I'll try to do it...

Thanks.  I feel there is much promise there, but perhaps not much need for it... yet.
And, as they say, it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Like slush, I'm considering dropping NMC support as well.  The project really does seem dead...

Quote from: H.P. Lovecraft
Whoever speaketh of Cthulhu shall remember that he
but seemeth dead, he sleeps, and yet he does not sleep,
he has died and yet he is not dead, asleep and dead
though he is, he shall rise again. Again it should be shown that

That is not dead which can eternal lie,
and with strange aeons even death may die.

3942  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Average age on this forum on: October 31, 2012, 12:48:49 AM
At 55 I am the oldest person here.  I've seen a lot of history.  I remember very little of it.  Television was invented, then bycycles, spaceships and computers.

55 i think ur are a cool guy doing BTC @ your age...some 55y old can,t even start a pc..and how many ponzi scheme did u survive???

That's a really cool attitude! Most young people look at us as if you're over 30 you all have dementia. The prejudice is so bad it literally makes me lie about my age.

Ya, look at this poll itself, everyone over 50 is grouped together.  lol

BitVisitor really needs to handle incorrect captcha submissions better.   Sad
3944  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: CoinAd - Free Coins every single day. on: October 30, 2012, 07:42:04 PM
Just in case you didn't see this suggestion I made in the other thread:

Consider putting in something like dailybitcoins has with their prize counter on the frontpage: "50 larger prizes available today"

A counter that decrements when one of the larger prizes is won, so that users don't have to keep hitting F5 to reload the page
trying for that prize after it has already been won. Then they can either opt for the base amount or wait and try for a larger prize
later.

That's against his interest, since it would reduce number of daily page views.  Cool

I wouldn't automatically assume that he would have less page views, since a lot of people might be like me and
would just not use the site as often because of the lowered base prize and the increased page loading one needs
to do to try for a larger prize... only to find after wearing ones fingers out on the F5 key that one didn't get it.

I also like your suggestion about lost prizes.  I also got 0.003 yesterday while trying for a smaller amount.
3945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Real life bitcoin scenario for non-bitcoiners on: October 30, 2012, 05:30:35 PM
a alternative currency by default is not illegal. but if that currency's use is predominantly used for illegal activity and has not actual value of to the general public to buy commodities such as vegetables, milk, etc then it can be considered illegal.

as such there have been cases in china and other countries that instead of hauling around FIAT capital. they would trade 'tickets' which were authorised as IOU's by the head of merky drugs cartel to be of value to the holder.

a recent movie 'premium rush' features such a ticket which basically is a receipt with a smiley face on it to represent that it has been authorised. this system is illegal.

if any of you want to get bitcoin completely legal here is two steps.

1) stop the god dang drug dealing being the main use of it. this doesn't have to be blocking silkroad but instead getting some reputable merchants to accept bitcoin to dilute the high percentage of trade being done by silk road. to atleast only 1/2% of use so that it is atleast on par with FIAT.
yes FIAT can be considered drug money but it has so many other uses, that FIAT is accepted by all as a currency of value.

2) learn how LETS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Exchange_Trading_Systems became an accepted alternative currency term. and then after reading the link. consider how to make bitcoin a term such as GETS (Global Exchange Trading System).

but point 2 cannot be done easily without point 1 being done. and on the flip side point 1 can't be done easily without point 2 being done. both due to the lack of positive reputation and understanding.

the other alternative is to use Litecoins to become a GETS and leave bitcoin for the merky business.

The fact that many people use BTC to buy the things they want ( drugs ) shows that it is already successful... so who needs it to be legal?

What damn good is litecoin if you can't even buy drugs with it?   Undecided

3948  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The best way to Hoard coins on: October 30, 2012, 04:50:55 PM
I happily spend BTC when it rises in value above what I originally paid for it...
if I happen to find something that I want/need that I can pay for with BTC...
and especially if the merchant offers a discount in BTC over other forms of payment.

Those latter things are fairly lacking at the moment so I just save that BTC for
when I can make good use of it.  And I see that as being more beneficial to the
BTC economy than harmful.

/edit btw I do let my customers know that I take BTC and I offer them a discount
over cash or cheques and a greater discount over paypal.  Oh my gosh... now
that I am editing this post I see that I have to press that "save" button... I am
somewhat reluctant to do that now that it appears there is a negative stigma
against such practices... oh well I will get over it...  thank god it doesn't offer the
option to "hoard" my post...  Wink

and another btw... in regard to the OP...  what good is happiness which isn't shared?   Cheesy

but this is just penies ..
2 bad theres nothing that could be more valuable

Fractions of a penny in most cases... but many of these places can't even make a go of it at that.

They are trying to make enough money, with the ads they show you etc., to make enough to give out
some to you and to have some left over for themselves as well.

If you want to make more you will have to do something like sell something - like your services - for BTC.

What products, talents, and skills, do you have for which others will be willing to pay?    Wink

3952  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Free Bitcoins Listing on: October 29, 2012, 08:29:54 PM
The highest I've got in the last 24 hours is 1.76, one time. All the rest were .4, .32, .24, and .16. Site still says "up to 4 mbtc" so I've got my fingers crossed to get lucky!

( talking about bitvisitor of course. )

I think that certain pages are meant for only certain geographic areas ( based on ip address )...

and so if you don't see any of the higher value ones you probably never will.

Will try some of these link, so i cani familiarize with how the whole bitcoin payment system works.

That's what this list is for... although no one will stop you from continuing to use those sites beyond that.   Wink

Bitcoin is nothing but a fun currency or a way to purchase things illegally. Face it, even if it were to "take off" the govt would shut it down.

Which govt... ( there are more than one and they tend not to get along too well most times. )

And how do you turn off something that doesn't have an "off" switch?  Bitcoin doesn't even require "the internet".

First world govt's. You dont "turn it off" you make it illegal. It wont stop completely obviously but no real business will touch it ever if its illegal. Most people will also stop using bitcoin if it becomes illegal.

Perhaps, but it won't be shut down. If first world govts make it illegal some second or third world govts may just adopt it as their official currency.
If first world govts get too draconian in their controls they could end up driving more and more people to use alternative underground systems...

Bitcoin does require the internet. How do you think coins originate?

There are many more networks, and methods of information exchange, than what is known as "the internet".

3957  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: A Way to Have a Decentralized Exchange.... Doable *Right Now* on: October 29, 2012, 04:17:31 PM
So first: how about doing away with the idea of an exchange having to be Bitcoins-for-some-tangible-good?

Umm...  I kinda like the idea of using bitcoins for that...

You've described a way to sell digital content for Bitcoin. It has nothing to do with an exchange, which is about exchanging Bitcoin with liquid goods (usually, traditional currencies).

+1

Maybe you should change the tread title... I was kinda excited to read that topic, but then I read what you were actually talking about.   Undecided

on BitVisitor home page I see last day or two

Quote
Earn up to 4 mBTC per website visit lasting 5 minutes or more!

but newer got to visit this sponsor. Is it typo or anybody visited this sponsor?

I'll attest that it is in fact occasionally 4 mBTC. I've managed to get it several times in the last couple days.

Since I've been trying it I have never seen it that high for a single site view.
The highest I've seen it start at is .64 btm(mbtc) then to .48, .24, .16, and down to .08
The last couple days it was starting at .24 btm for me... today it started at .32

Seems it is geographical based to get to the 4 mBTC sponsor

Yes, that's what I was thinking.
