3941  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What or how does it feels to grow in rank?! on: July 07, 2020, 12:56:52 AM
The onus is on merit sources to distribute merits fairly to any post of what I'll call standard quality...

You do, however, spend a lot of time on bounties and I'm not against that but you might want to try and make more posts in bitcoin related sections if you want to rank up but you might want to search for the reason you want to rank up here first?

If you continue with good intent then it will be easier to rank up, I wouldn't keep trying to search for it though if you are doing because it's possible to overdo stuff if you're not natural and are just trying to rank up it may look obvious...
3942  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How can I calculate if a transaction is likely to EVER complete on: July 06, 2020, 11:43:22 PM
Edit: as ranochingo says - if you can wait for it to confirm then DO!

I don't know how you'd calculate it as there's an added entropy given its about 8% of a block in size (at 88000 bytes).
As I see it, you've 3 options:
1. If you're not in a rush leave it as it is for 14 days and it'll probably confirm at some point if there's enough space in blocks.
2. If you're not in a rush with all of it but are with some, package them as a separate transaction...
3. Use fewer inputs per transaction, if you get all down to about 10kb they might fit better (8 transactions instead then).

I'd recommend 2-3 sats per byte for a transaction this size to confirm within a day (around triple your current fee will make it more competitive for miners but this is just an estimate).
3943  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The advantage in being part of this forum on: July 06, 2020, 10:54:11 PM
Tbh sometimes the best way to learn is to lose something (it's not the only best but its definitive in knowing it didn't work).

A lot of stuff moves quickly here especially for newbies (or seems to) and sometimes you can get caught out by other stuff going on at the time but you are obviously better off researching while you can and staying in the safer parts of trading/the Internet to an extent... I know people who manage to lose everything trying to gamble instead of trade on exchanges and it's tempting but it's important to work out the difference if he's one of those so he knows how to better manage it and give up (if he's actively trading crypto)..

But putting it this way, if he expected that guy to return 10x or even 2x, not losing his $2k might have left him with more of a regret now and it's a mistake he can learn from...
3944  Economy / Economics / Re: What in the world is AC.T ? on: July 06, 2020, 09:26:57 PM
Am I the only one confused as to what it is still?

So each AC.T is a dynamically programmed piece of code is what I got...? If that's it you could shorten the email or contain a tldr.
3945  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitmex: Why can't unleveraged (<1x) shorts liquidate on: July 06, 2020, 07:21:35 PM
Yeah, it won't liquidate but if you left it open for months, the fees will kill ya in the end anyway. At 1x? Might as well buy USDT. Anyway, I assume it's because it takes time to withdraw from Bitmex.

1x just seemed a weird choice, sometimes it's nice to start off at a low leverage and then up the position as it moves in that direction if you're doing something a bit longer term or a larger move.

I guess I forgot a 1x short of btc was a 1x long of a usd (probably better off using the bitmex index than tether though - or actual. Usd/eur fiat)...
3946  Economy / Economics / Re: Many countries have currencies pegged to the US dollar. When tether collapses... on: July 06, 2020, 03:43:40 PM
I wouldn't touch tether at all... I mean if the company is greedy enough to hold 70% in reserves and not just invest the other 30% but keep it as a reserve then WTF are people using them.

I think they got hacked, some funds were stolen and some funds were frozen by banks or something. So they lowered the backing rate to 70%(?) but eventually they just changed it to not being backed at all lol. They learned every trick in the book from the federal reserve history.

Probably more of a reason not to trust them if they don't even have some sort of insurance on the funds...

How do dollars actually get hacked though too, that sounds kinda impossible unless they didn't bother to peruse the "hacker". I think the fed at least print money in good faith/with strict conditions....

Not to mention the time when it DROPPED TO 86 CENTS on bitfinex afaik (it might have been lowr but I think I remember it falling)... Although according to Google it had an ath at $1.21 too so...
3947  Economy / Trading Discussion / Bitmex: Why can't unleveraged (<1x) shorts liquidate on: July 06, 2020, 02:29:12 PM
I've been fiddling around with the trading controls at bitmex waiting for a strong trend to form and some sort of decisiveness...

Anyway I set up a short on low leverage and moved it down to 1x, at which my liquidation price became $100M (I'm guessing this is a placeholder when the number won't be reached and a little btc easter egg given the 100m target Satoshi had), anyway does this mean a short on bitmex at 1x or less won't actually liquidate much like a 1x long? Is there a good way to conceptualise this as I'm not sure I can find anything on other sites (same is listed for 0.04x too so I assume it's the same for all <=1x leverages).
3948  Bitcoin / Legal / Were the legal imitations of Facebooks plan to use the name libra discussed? on: July 06, 2020, 02:59:06 AM
I noticed jet cash mentioned copyright infringement a while ago and I didn't pay any notice to it but the name itself comes from the Latin for the pound ref probably protected by royal copyright which means either (1) Facebook gets taken to court by the UK for using the term or (2 a lot more likely) a bunch of scams start to appear using the libra name or an attack of some sort on it's name in wider Europe...

(I was trying to skim through patents and couldn't find anything related to financial instruments but I don't think there's even a category for them)...

If this has already been mentioned, please link me and I'll lock this.
3949  Economy / Economics / Re: Many countries have currencies pegged to the US dollar. When tether collapses... on: July 06, 2020, 02:19:21 AM
I mean when you've got no alternative then you're still probably going to accept it...

You could also peg a currency to the dollar so that in 30 years, it becomes a separate currency once you're more financially stable?

Also, I thought usdc was fully backed they have about half the issued usdc already redeemed that have beem minted? I wouldn't touch tether at all... I mean if the company is greedy enough to hold 70% in reserves and not just invest the other 30% but keep it as a reserve then WTF are people using them.
3950  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Restore transaction descriptions on: July 05, 2020, 10:09:22 PM
Can you not just backup your wallet file in other locations in order to save it.

Otherwise, there's label sync: https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-use-the-electrum-label-sync-plugin/ (haven't read the full guide, don't install anything but it looks like the plug in is already in the electrum application).

3951  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [SCAM Alert] BAT token fake airdrop! They will steal your wallet's private key. on: July 05, 2020, 06:07:22 PM
I dunno if you want to write a thread on this in beginners if it was advertised somewhere to you (or it's easy enough to find searching on bitcoin related sites)...

Looks like a classic scam trend and I think most advanced users here (if not caught in a moment of weakness) would be able to recognise something like this is unreasonable (it's a few years after bat was originally released) ...

3952  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: While using bitcoin there should be privacy on: July 05, 2020, 05:58:54 PM

You are right, but what about using bitcoin ATM, I will add it to it, with bitcoin ATM privacy can still be 100%. But, there is no much bitcoin ATM for now but their number is drastically increasing.

Unless you have a technical problem and need to give them your name/mobile number... I was thinking about an atm and then remembered they're only in our major cities here (I think there's quite a lot in the UK anyway) but you can still be tracked more traditionally through things such as cctvs and if you make a purchase via a card for example in the same store then they might be able to work out who you are...

(I'm also fairly sure a surcharge is added but it definitely seems quite private)...
3953  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: New US Bill would require makers of encrypted devices to leave a backdoor on: July 05, 2020, 05:01:04 PM
-cut-
Google and Apple underline the largest market for smartphones and computers, they can cooperate secretly to leave hidden doors that enable governments to access data.
This may not be announced publicly but it is the easiest way.
I think the Chinese government is doing this and some governments might do that if things get out of control.

Afaik Google have to reveal their source code to other companies, would Samsung not try to remove something like this? They're the main innovation hub for Google and have a larger market in Europe (probably more than they can get from the US)...

Are a lot of terrorist organisations not advanced enough to know what's best to use for security... Also if this goes through I doubt companies are going to make separate versions without back doors... (perhaps this could incentivise Asia to produce different devices or Europe/australasia to start producing better secure devices that don't have random holes for the US government).
Just because they are not advanced enough does not mean that there will be people who will be exploiting this backdoor, remember that there are people that will get curious and once they discover this backdoor meant either they tell it to someone and the word of mouth goes on or they post it in the Internet either through written post or video, either way it will reach the malicious intent people. True privacy is what we should be aiming for and not those compromised one.

Any cypher punk trying to prove a point would just dump the keys on the net and wait for everyone to start using them to access others' data... It'd prove a point again the government, this could also be done by operatives in ex security services who can sell their skills as PIs in phone hacking. It'd be something journalism will be back to buying up!
3954  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: While using bitcoin there should be privacy on: July 05, 2020, 04:54:57 PM
There are probably lots of differences of opinion, I have 2 separate wallets for example: one for funds I buy from kycd exchanges and ones from elsewhere...

I don't know about the trust of p2p exchanges yer, how do you verify a banking transaction?. There are ways to improve privacy but I doubt you'll ever have full privacy anywhere... Bisq is quite secure for example but a person has to verify a bank transaction and I don't know how prone that could be to social engineering.
3955  Economy / Economics / Re: The freer the market, the freer the people? on: July 04, 2020, 08:59:45 PM
At the rate things are going you have free access to doing anything if you have the money for it/are large enough as a company

For example for profit food, pharmaceutical and medical advertising(/propaganda) have an impact on other countries even without those products or even cause issues with how governments inform citizens...

A free market leads to mostly bad things imo, you get rid of a lot of safety the government could legislate against in favour of false advertising and leading to worse practices...
3956  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: July 04, 2020, 04:36:26 PM
Got "502 Bad Gateway" error. Is it an error on my side or yours?

I've got through to step 0 too, did the main site and captchha load fine and did you fill in the captchha first time? I think I've had a 502 before.

(as a tip for the Internet, my general rule is less than 400 is a you error, 400+ is a server error (around the 500 mark is a script error or access error due to some sort of "dos"/service error ).
3957  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4 - Multisig with HWW + Phone ? on: July 04, 2020, 03:20:04 AM
Yeah partly signed transactions or unsigned transactions are often incompatible with other simoftware types afaik. You might be able to pick up a cheap android phone (second hand possibly) if you wanted to use the phone or you could just use an extra he wallet.

It might make sense if you're using different devices to use the 3 device offer from trezor, a ledger and a cold card (or two ledgers and 3 trezors)). Either that or you could just do the forth or fifth signature on your machine (or use the same seed on a ledger or trezor but with a different password which I think works theoretically but I haven't tested it) ...
3958  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Many pages hidden within the forum on: July 04, 2020, 03:13:33 AM
-snip-
I think this feature has been disabled because when clicking the link, an error message appears.
Here is another old thread other than the link that TryNinja previously listed:
BitCoinTalk hidden pages - undocumented features

I got lost somewhere in the stats page before and it said the most users online this month was zero and that there were 260 members online at that point so...

Edit it was most users today and users online now.
3959  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4 - Multisig with HWW + Phone ? on: July 04, 2020, 03:04:45 AM
I don't think you can use electrum on an iPhone and you can't plug a hardware wallet into it and have electrum recognise it (at least you can't with the android version)..

You can sign whatever you want with the phone though, I had a multisig between my laptop and phone going for a while (just scanning the code on my laptop and clicking to sign it on the phone - is that what you're attempting to do)?
3960  Economy / Economics / Re: Privacy Coins and The Shadow Economy on: July 04, 2020, 01:43:03 AM
Paper money was hard to trace, but you could at least use sniffer dogs in airports - now many countries have moved to plastic and how are you going to sniff that out (you can was them to remove a lot of traces afaik).

Tbh the migration to where everything can be tracked is one that occurred recently, you couldn't do it well until the 60s-80s I think it's a natural sideways evolution... There are ways to track privacy coins (especially if you send odd amounts).

Privacy in general also means the normals and the majority go without being tracked. Your bank doesn't advertise to you an affiliated casino because you haven't gambled this month (for example) - or they don't try to sell your data on to other people while giving you nothing for it and no knowledge it's happening. In the information age where big data is ruling what everyone could do perhaps adding anonymity is a welcomed taint.

Tracking what someone visits on the Internet for law enforcement is like buying the first book to a trilogy and realising it's awful (you're going to buy/borrow the second one just out of curiosity if you don't have the right restraint)...
