3961  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are we entering the era of CBDCs? on: April 15, 2022, 11:19:37 AM
On the other hand, I am afraid it will lead to unprecedented surveillance and censorship, with no benefit at all to us, common people.
Isn't it already happening each time you use a centralized service (credit cards, debit cards, bank transfer, PayPal, SWIFT, VISA,...) to make a payment? I wouldn't say "more" censorship and surveillance, it would be pretty much the same as before.

Imho it's not the same. Now the eggs are not all in one basket, now one may need a warrant, there's some inertia.. it takes time...
When CBDCs will "rule the world" all such info will be in one place, to be centralized, checked, allow this or that entity just "help themselves" with all that data... and (as a different topic, but it now occurred to me) I don't even want to think what'll happen in the first hack (because .. you don't expect a government infrastructure to be as solid as the one of companies that literally depend on it, do you?)
3962  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold and precious metals should scale to buy coffee on: April 15, 2022, 08:45:39 AM
This would be a disaster for all following governments. Just imagine that average Joe starts realizing how much he's losing every year, especially now, with these high numbers for inflation...
This is the reason it will not be a disaster for the government because people will realize how the government have been making the value of fiat to decrease and go for gold, but not for spending but for holding. People will still prefer to spend fiat because they know if they hold it, the value will decrease.

Well, when they will see that in January their salary did worth more, they won't be happy, whether they spend or not.
Then everybody will pay the taxes in the latest possible so they pay less.
And if people will buy gold, then the inflation may not be so much beneficial for the govt because there will be less paper money that'll lose value.

I don't see anything beneficial for the govt here.
3963  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold and precious metals should scale to buy coffee on: April 15, 2022, 06:14:09 AM
What is needed is minting of precious metals in standardized $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 denominations. With coins $0.01, $0.05, $0.10, $0.25. The specific weight and exchange rate at the time of minting can be recorded to make it easier to calculate price drift.

This would be a disaster for all following governments. Just imagine that average Joe starts realizing how much he's losing every year, especially now, with these high numbers for inflation...
On the other hand, for the cup-of-coffee situation, we have Bitcoin, with 8 digits after the decimal point  Wink

PS. I did not miss the "return to gold standard" part, just it's not feasible. At all.
3964  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Microstrategy shareholders letters that more bitcoin would still be bought on: April 15, 2022, 05:12:03 AM

It sounds good, it's reassuring. And that's what they also did: sent a letter reassuring people that they'll continue doing what they started.
Nice, but, as already said, not unexpected. It's clearly the time for accumulating. Going otherwise would have been the surprise.
And as we can see the news and even the actual buys made by MicroStrategy no longer have much of an impact (at least not a visible impact) on the price.
3965  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin could hit $100,000 within a year, crypto firm's CEO predicts! on: April 15, 2022, 05:04:44 AM
Bitcoin could hit $100,000 within a year, the CEO of crypto lending firm Nexo has predicted.

Since his business works with crypto, it's part of the job description to convince people that crypto has a good future.
Making price predictions is one such move. The prediction has 0 value because it's a prediction and the bigger/more interesting the price published, the better chances newspapers will talk about that, also indirectly advertising his company. It's a win-win situation by just telling a number.

So it's a biased prediction with absolutely no value. Sorry.
3966  Economy / Reputation / Re: 325btc with loads of topics on: April 15, 2022, 04:59:27 AM
Op, maybe you can try to report some of his posts and see what moderators will do about it, otherwise ignore the user.

I've reported 2 of his topics yesterday. One is good (removed), one is unhandled (may or may not get removed, probably not).
Since I've only started reporting him, it's not that bad. However, the more reporting those mindless posts, the more chances to get removed. Maybe someday he starts writing something thoughtful.

What you should do is put him on ignore ASAP and don't even peek at what he writes anymore, because you'll just get frustrated.  Believe me, it'll save you mental stress that you don't need.

While ignore worked for me very good, I think that reporting at least the worse ones can be a good course of action too (now it's unignored).
However, I agree: if it becomes too frustrating, then the solution is ignore.

@Timelord2067, the first two images don't work.
The archive image I can see if I open the link; the one from postimg doesn't work at all (site unreachable, DNS error).
You may want to post the images somewhere else. If it helps, for me imgur worked best.
3968  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core can't start (hard disk corrupted?) on: April 14, 2022, 07:30:59 PM
I can't unmount it.

Code:
bitcoin@raspibolt:/mnt/ext/bitcoin $ sudo umount /dev/sda1
umount: /mnt/ext: target is busy.

I've just read that sda1 is considered the OS disk by Ubuntu and it cannot be unmounted.
So now the question is.. is the problem on sda1? I was expecting it to be on the non-system disk...

(Also I guess that we better wait for somebody more experienced with Linux  Embarrassed )
3969  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core can't start (hard disk corrupted?) on: April 14, 2022, 07:20:42 PM
From what I've read here, you must unmount the drive first.
Also, from what I've read on that page, the -N parameter ensures no changes are made (dry run), if you want to only see first.

Code:
sudo umount /dev/sda1
sudo fsck -N /dev/sda1
mount /dev/sda1
3970  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core can't start (hard disk corrupted?) on: April 14, 2022, 07:04:39 PM
I searched that up and it has to do with the hard drive. Has it happened to anyone before? I just want to ensure I don't have to erase it and re-install everything.

Did you try to run fsck ?
From what I've read it's pretty much like chkdsk I've been using in the past. It will not necessarily render your data useless; it depends on the luck/what is on the bad area and what happened there (bad sector, cross link?)

Imho you should run it at least to check for the errors (not repair) so you have a better overview of the problem.
3971  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [SCAM] MyCryptoParadise- selling trade signals on: April 14, 2022, 06:51:28 PM
Yes it’s true that MyCryptoParadise offers huge profits to their members I am a subscriber to their VIP membership and the results have been phenomenal.

They are professionals and don’t use any tricks like mentioned in the above thread. They have a free group which anyone can join and see the results themselves. Join the community and don’t pay attention to naysayers like the gentleman above.

If that would be true, I wonder... why don't you post from your main account?
Maybe you're affiliated with them? Or even part of the team? Maybe you're afraid that this could get you (too) negative feedback?!

Sorry, I cannot believe you.

A study linked the purchase of cryptocurrencies to narcissism, machiavellianism and psychopathy

1. My first narcissistic, machiavellianistic and psychopathic answer is: Sour grapes much?
2. After bitcoin is ponzi, and bitcoin is drug money and bitcoin is bad for environment... now this? I am sure that they can do better; still, after they chose to believe all that crap, when we show them they're wrong ... we are called "evil psychopaths". Oh well, I can live with that.
3973  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why no simple service for HODLing Bitcoin? on: April 14, 2022, 04:25:21 PM
Is it really that much of a big deal? I mean do you really have no self control over when you will be selling and when you will be holding?

In the same way some just can't get away from gambling, some just can't HODL.
Even more, especially when the price is going down, many are getting scared and sell.

So use cases for this do exist, even though, as I already said, it can be risky for when one really-really needs that money.
Still, as long as Bitcoin itself has tools for this, using something external makes not much sense.
3974  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: April 14, 2022, 04:02:03 PM
I have everything noted down and I sent them the information they ask for when you run into issues on the site through email.

If you have everything noted down please check if:
1. The ChipMixer website you've visited is one of those posted in the first post of this topic.
2. Maybe you can restore your session and see if the bitcoin address you've sent to is 100% identical with the deposit address posted on the website

3975  Other / Archival / Re: Morningstar takes a look at the crypto industry on: April 14, 2022, 03:45:34 PM
If big institutions didn't invest in bitcoin, you wouldn't soon be able to sell your bitcoins at $40,000-$60,000.

The thing is... the "rumors" about these companies eyeing Bitcoin have the potential to rise the price even before they get to actually buy.
So imho they won't tell anything if they are seriously thinking to invest... until they've already invested.
My point is that while all this sounds more than good, I would not get overly happy only for rumors, or for companies only "taking a look".
3976  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are we entering the era of CBDCs? on: April 14, 2022, 09:35:01 AM
I would not yet say that we've entered the CBDCs era. I'd wait for at least one democratic country with a strong economy also adopts CBDCs in order to be convinced.
On one hand, it seems to be the direction central banks are interested in very much.
On the other hand, I am afraid it will lead to unprecedented surveillance and censorship, with no benefit at all to us, common people.

Petro though was a complete scam, if I'm not mistaken, it was supposedly back up by oil and by the Russian, however, they debunked it already and all the money that was raised was nowhere to be found. So this is a case of CBCD failure in my opinion. And maybe other countries that follow learn by Maduro's mistakes that's why countries like China (Digital Yuan) can be considered as success because they are very careful on their decision to roll out. There was a time that they just roll it out to some small provinces in China just to test the viability of it.

I think that Petro was not imposed to own citizen. And the people knew better and stayed away from that political scam.
China handed out a lot of eCNY for free to show the system works. I think that this was not the case for Petro.

However, you're right: does anybody in China get his paycheck in eCNY yet? Because if not (or far too few)... then we're too early to even call eCNY a success.
3977  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: new swiss crypto exchange on: April 14, 2022, 09:10:06 AM
I stumbled across a new Swiss crypto exchange the other day and it sounded very cool to me, but I just don't know what to look out for because I'm not familiar with crypto, so I thought I'd ask the internet. If you could leave your opinion about this exchange that would be great. Thanks Smiley

Ah the name of the exchange is honesto.swiss

I am not sure you ask about that platform or you're advertising it. I tend to believe it's the second, hence already lowering my expectations about the honesty of that site.

However, a super quick web search didn't show any confirmed scam of those.
Still, since it's basically a completely unknown platform (although they may exist since 2020?!), if you're indeed newbie, I'd advise you look for more established ones, to be on the safe side.
3978  Economy / Economics / Re: The main harm of existing “Stablecoins" is uncontrolled inflation. on: April 14, 2022, 09:02:29 AM
And how do they differ from a regular debit card?

While stable coins may be used like "a regular debit card", their actual real use is different:
* unlike for debit card, stable coins can be used without KYC (of course, in less and less situations, unfortunately)
* stable coins can be used for transferring value fast between different platforms. This happens (is settled, final) much faster than debit cards.

Stablecoins initial use was for traders, maybe even especially for arbitrage trading.
Nowadays many use it against Bitcoin price drops or other use cases adapted to their needs, especially no-KYC needs.

If you see stablecoins "like a debit card" and "like fiat" inflation makes fiat value drop, it can be also seen as inflating Bitcoin. That part cannot really be changed...
3979  Economy / Economics / Re: The main harm of existing “Stablecoins" is uncontrolled inflation. on: April 14, 2022, 08:19:31 AM
The main harm of existing “Stablecoins" is uncontrolled inflation.
Today, anyone can create a demon of control-print their “Stablecoins” thereby increasing the total issue of the financial bubble, what do you think?

It widely depends.

If a stablecoin is properly and fully backed by the "thing" it replaces - usually USD, then there should not be artificial inflation.

The problem starts when stablecoins are not baked. And here there are at least two problems: those using the not-backed stablecoin face themselves the risk of finding themselves holding a bag of coins with no value (for example many gold-pegged stablecoin projects were for example not backed and they're long gone), and yes, the other problem is that it can cause artificial inflation. Still, maybe the oldest stablecoin and surely the most well-known one, USDT, has a long history of not being properly backed, yet people still accept it and use it, helping the crypto market being (somewhat?) artificially inflated.

In theory, one should DYOR and avoid the fishy ones. Sadly, the reality shows that this doesn't happen.
The only good news seems to be that at least the newcomers in the stablecoins "market" seem to have proper backing (or at least most of them).
3980  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: buy my home with bitcoin on: April 13, 2022, 04:06:17 PM
I don't think the OP's offer contains an actual offer to sell his house.

It's clearly either trolling, either fishing for merits. A proper attempt to sell the house would have given some more details - size, location, maybe pictures, maybe a price he was thinking to...

Usually people do not buy things which are of high value through cryptocurrencies.

It depends.. I remember somebody asking here on the forum if it's a good idea to keep his/their savings for a while (iirc it was 6 months) in crypto, then buy a house. The funds were iirc pretty near to the target.
One can easily make such plans (although on 3-4 years at very least), then buy. But not from individuals with questionable reputation over the internet, clearly. There are companies handling real estate sales and some may accept crypto. This way taxes and escrow situations are also handled.
