3961  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League Betting Pool v2.0 | Current pot: £420 on: January 17, 2018, 02:54:39 PM

I'll give it 24 hours and hopefully there'll be a bit of stability as it seems to have steadied a bit already but who knows what will happen during the rest of the day. Most people will send the money in on the day I send the address out but it'll likely take a couple to get every one in and I would rather people not decide to pay just because others paid much less than them (or the opposite).
Whatever you think is best. I guess I'm a little bias because I don't really care about the current price of Bitcoin. I would be happy to send in an equal amount of Bitcoin, rather than fixing it to the price. Obviously, it's already been agreed to send in to the price on the day, so it probably wouldn't be right to fix it to a Bitcoin value.

It would be fixed to a btc amount but that value could be vastly different between the current price and when the last person pays (and maybe they just wouldn't bother). I was actually thinking of rounding it up and making it 0.0025 last week but that was then worth £25. Now it's £17 and with the way things are going it could be much less. I'll see how it goes. Missing another round isn't the end of the world. Would rather wait till the dust settles and btc stabilises before we try get everyone signed up.

Anyone know if withdrawals are allowed right now? Just got a red 'Permission denied' error but don't know whether it's just not permitted currently or an error with the site and to keep trying. I guess maybe a lot of people are requesting them due to the crash so not sure whether they've still blocked them or not.
3963  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League Betting Pool v2.0 | Current pot: £420 on: January 16, 2018, 01:04:29 PM
You could start sending out the payment address to everyone now, but include that if they don't want to pay today, due to the instability of Bitcoin right now they can wait until x deadline.

Otherwise, we could have the issue of sending the payment information out too late and some people not meeting the deadline. So in both instances the pot wouldn't be as big.  As long as the information has been sent then it's up to the people involved whether they want to pay now, or closer to the deadline.

3964  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am worried! on: January 16, 2018, 10:49:46 AM
I am currently wondering what FUD is going around that has driven the value so low at the moment because am not seeing any at all as of this moment. Could the abnormal transactions fees also be a factor as well.

It's not just bitcoin but most cryptos seem to have taken a big hit. There's always going to be uncertainty surrounding bitcoin as it rises just as much as it falls due to speculation on it and people always panic even on the whiff of some bad news that may or may not turn out to be true, but the big news (or unnecessary panic) seems to be from South Korea proposing a ban on crypto exchanges: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/bitcoin-price-latest-crytocurrencies-including-ethereum-plunge-after-south-korea-regulation-a8161291.html

It's probably not even that big of a deal and may not even go through but of course that doesn't stop people crapping themselves over it as usual.
3965  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League Betting Pool v2.0 | Current pot: £420 on: January 16, 2018, 10:31:37 AM
Bitcoin has taken a bit of a hit the past few hours so should I still send the address out today or maybe give it a day or two to see what happens regarding the value? If it keeps falling the prize pot might not end up being much and might be unfair to people paying different values as we collect the money in. I think people are unnecessarily panicking like they always do but I could see it falling more during the day as people wake up and panic which will have a knock on effect, but hopefully it'll settle once the dust has cleared (but you never know with weak hands in bitcoin and I think there'll be a lot of newish investors who bought in with the rally in December who will panic and want out especially with all the "bubble" and "end of bitcoin" headlines that will pop up all over during today).
3966  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am worried! on: January 16, 2018, 10:21:00 AM
Everyday, more and more fud are being spread all throughout the internet because of the recent happenings on bitcoin. Which causes the prices to decrease even more. Even when they do not have enough knowledge about bitcoin peole believe them because they are famous. I think this will be bad for bitcoin. Specially for newbies that only bought bitcoins for greed and don't understand how it works. They will surely panic sell and also spread fud about bitcoin because they lost capital because of their stupidity. This really is a but scary. But i sure won't be selling my bitcoins no matter what.

There's nothing you can do about others panicking but this uncertainty is just part of bitcoin now and for newbies not used to it a lot of them get worried when they look like they might be losing all their money and cash out when they can but that's just weak hands for you. If you're in it for the long-term then you shouldn't have anything to worry about and once the dust has settled the value will likely climb back up as it usually does, but nothing is ever guaranteed. You said you won't be selling your coins no matter what and mentioned other's greed, but I'm guessing you do have some sort of value in mind that you would sell at because what else are you going to do with them? Hold til you die? I think you seem to be worrying about the value of bitcoin just as much as the others who panic and sell are but remember greed works both ways especially if you're overly concerned merely about the fiat value of bitcoin short term.

I went with 2-0 to Manchester and it's that exact score at half time right now. Hopefully it'll stay that way but I can't see it. Really need those 40 points so this week wasn't a total wash out. Ten points doesn't really do anything on games like these because probably everyone else will have backed them to win. The question is by how many  Grin.
3968  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League pool betting Discussion Thread on: January 15, 2018, 01:27:19 PM
Unless I get zero points one week this will probably be my worst week ever at a mere ten points (and joined only with ajaxmoor - and I'm not counting the others on zero who probably just didn't enter their predictions).

The Liverpool game just goes to show that sometimes it pays to mix it up a little or go against the grain with your predictions, but nobody would have had the balls to go with 4-3 haha. I thought I was risky with my 2-3 prediction  Grin.

I'm not going to state my score for tonight cos I really could do with the 40 points haha.

3969  Economy / Reputation / Re: The Pharmacist - Attacks Filipinos here in BCT on: January 15, 2018, 01:22:21 PM
It would be nice just to be fair and square with others. Never in my real life to make a statements like that will offend someone specially speaking about the race. We do not own their lives and we have no right to control the or say anything bad to them. This is a forum that all people can share together for the common good and not for the interest for oneself. I believe we are a loving community and all were happy to use this forum for many things and not for dragging people down. I hope the mods can see "The Pharmacist post and have a review on it for fare usage according to the laws.

The world isn't some hippy love fest and neither is this place and The Pharmacist didn't break any laws as far as I'm aware. I believe in freedom of speech but that works both ways so we aren't going to remove something just because it is deemed 'racist' or someone else doesn't like it, but there are rules here. You can actually say things deemed racist or offensive here just as long as you make a valid point and are not just doing it with the sole intention to inflame or aggravate someone (even if someone is actually aggravated by it). Sure, many people are going to find what he said offensive but I personally don't believe he broke the rules. As others have said, every user here is free to ignore any users they don't like and I would suggest you do that rather than hope staff will make a judgement call on it for you.
3970  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 15, 2018, 12:15:20 PM
They will only improve if people pay for quality posts.
And a problem with this is that quality doesn't equate with quantity.  Managers like aTriz have a 200-character requirement, which helps, but what I'm seeing is that a lot of members are writing extremely bloated shitposts that basically say the same thing over and over, within a post.  And those posts are just as garbage-y as the "nice 1" posts, only from far away they look like something profound.

A 200 character count is probably a good idea, but you still need to be monitoring people alongside that for the reasons you stated. If campaign managers only accepted people who make great posts in the first place then there would be nothing to worry about. If this was adopted across the board then users would be forced to up their quality before they could even get on any campaigns. As long as we have campaigns that will accept bots and shitposting account farmers then nothing will change because those campaigns will always be exploited.

As you've said before, change is only going to come from above.  Only when Theymos cracks down on campaign managers will we start to see the end of shitposts, and I don't see this happening anytime soon.  I like the Ivory Tower section, but it looks like no one is going to post there much (not surprisingly).  So much of what we see on bitcointalk is motivated by campaigns.

Ivory Tower gives people a safe-haven from sig spam and farmers so it's helpful in that respect, but it obviously doesn't help the rest of the board which still needs to be dealt with.

Just wondering what you guys have on Liverpool vs Man City later...?  Personally I think it's gonna be a draw, maybe 2 - 2 or 1 - 1.  Both clubs could negate each other out but the game itself will def be good, fast paced paced and going end to end.

Anyway yeah...  Interested in what you guys got.  Thanks.

I went for 2-3. Said these games could be very close and go either way and Arsenal lost 2-1 and Liverpool are currently winning 4-2. I'm still only on ten points but should get at least another ten from the Man U game tomorrow.

Edit 4-3 now with minutes to go. Can City come back? Doubt it. About time the got a reality check though haha.

Edit: finished 4-3.
3972  Other / Meta / Re: Hacked account recovery on: January 14, 2018, 05:34:49 PM
How does this happen? Do people simply guess easy passwords? My password for this one includes symbols, numbers and shit.

Yeah, the very weak ones can be broken in seconds. There are websites where you can check how strong your password is such as: https://howsecureismypassword.net/

Try something similar to your password and see what it says, but merely using a dictionary word with a couple of symbols and numbers doesn't make it unbreakable but the longer it is with numerous symbols and numbers will make it much stronger. Ideally it should be some random gibberish with a lot of symbols and numbers and upper and lower case.
3973  Other / Meta / Re: Newbies can now pay a small fee to enable images on: January 14, 2018, 02:25:34 PM
But the above statement is kinda confusing, so after I pay for Cooper I can loose the benefits of posting images?  Sad

No. Even if Copper Membership was removed at some point you will be a Jnr Member after 30 activity so you'd then still be able to post images. Theymos has likely just included this stipulation merely as a precaution if the rank is removed for whatever reason at some point in the future (or perks are changed) but it's unlikely to be done so in my opinion, but obviously nothing is guaranteed in the small print.
3974  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 14, 2018, 12:11:52 PM
Signature campaigns only improve post quality if posted are paid by results - signups or sales for example. Just flying a banner fr a product that the poster has never used, and probably never will encourages volume, loe quality posting. I don't understand why campaign managers think that helps their products. In most cases it makes me think - That's a product to avoid if he is promoting it. Smiley

They will only improve if people pay for quality posts. For that to happen there needs be punishments for those that don't make them and those that pay users to do them and then everyone will tighten up their belt and do a better job. An advert is an advert at the end of the day and oftentimes I would have no idea about most of these ICOs but I soon become aware of them when I suddenly see dozens of shitposters crapping all over the forum carrying their signature so their way of adverting is sadly effective. I'm not even sure if users making better posts would be more advantageous for them as more posts = more hits/ad impressions regardless of quality. Also, you have to remember that most of campaigns these days are essentially paying them with free money. They just pre-mine a load of coins or tokens then dish them out to anybody who bothers to sign up and in the process advertising their product all over. The owners can then just sit back and watch the 'real' money come flooding in in Bitcoin and Etherum etc without having to do anything and their end goal is achieved.
3975  Other / Meta / Re: Spam from @AlexPromotion on: January 14, 2018, 11:57:27 AM
@hilariousetc,can you please request theymos to implement or at least consider this :-
There is this thing which detects your original IP even if you use VPN or anything, so if you're banned, you cannot access your account/s even if you use VPN. Simple as that. If this feature gets implemented, then people won't have to fuss about shit posters.
I had mentioned this in another thread couple of days ago
I don't know what "this thing" is, but a good VPN won't allow any scripts to detect your real IP address, and neither does Tor.
Bitcointalk has units of evil based on IP addresses, it's not perfect but it's something.

I know it's annoying and frustrating but all you can do at the moment is keep reporting them and staff will keep on nuking them.
Don't worry there, I'll keep reporting them Smiley

I've never heard of this either. Tor and VPNs are meant to protect you against this sort of stuff and I doubt even the CIA can find this info if you're smart enough (though I believe VPNs can accidentally leak your IP in some ways). What you might be thinking of is browser fingerprinting though which can be very useful to catch alts and just using a proxy won't help you (and I think this should be on the new forum). You might use a different IP for your accounts but you almost certainly won't be using a unique PC or browser for each of your alts and accounts could be collated and searched by them and cross referenced with other data etc.
3976  Other / Meta / Re: Account Ban on: January 14, 2018, 11:53:49 AM
What's your opinion on the new paid member ranks such as Copper Member to help alleviate this sort of spam? I gather people shit post in Politics & Off Topic etc (places prohibited in signature campaigns) just to get their rank up. If someone purchases a membership and then restricts their posting purely to areas related to altcoins (such as altcoin discussion, announcements etc) and keeps away from the rest of the board, do you think this is better overall or does it still detract from the forum? I'm just trying to understand where the balance could be struck.

Paid memberships that are the only way you can have a signature are one of the things I've suggested to combat spam/poor posts and I'm hoping theymos implements further ranks such as Silver & Gold and at some point. I don't think we should limit users to only posting in alt coin boards but if all users who sign up here can't have a signature (or only a very small one) unless they purchase it like they do with Copper Membership I think it will have a significant effect on low quality posts. People farming dozens to hundreds of accounts to exploit signature campaigns will be a thing of the past and everyone will be limited to only the amount of accounts they can afford or deem profitable to use. Theymos doesn't seem too keen on removing signatures altogether but I can't see any good reason why we can't allow them alongside being able to rank up naturally or make an additional "premium" rank with added benefits that can only be acquired by donating. The latter would be a good experiment on its own to see how many people go for it.

3977  Other / Meta / Re: What about those annoying tx accelerator threads in Service section? on: January 14, 2018, 10:42:00 AM
I made a similar topic, no one cares all they do care is forum traffic. there should be some new rules about transaction accelerators, they should provide information about their mining pool. if they are using the same service, posting several threads is spam. forum mods are busy with their own jobs, forum needs moderators with moderating as their full time job.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2598065.msg26439457#msg26439457

It's not about traffic or staff not having time (though I think having some full time staff/admins would be beneficial) and I would happily trash the majority of these threads as long as there is some guidelines regarding them from theymos. At the moment there isn't and staff don't moderate scams and potential ones hence why they're left for the community to police as annoying as it may be.

Hilarious is there a room for one more? If so count me in.  Grin

Yes. It's open to anyone as long as you pay the fee. I'll put you down. Look out for a PM from my main account on Tuesday hopefully. I would have started it monday but there's the last game of the current round on.
3979  Other / Meta / Re: Account locked because my password was changed??? on: January 14, 2018, 10:21:30 AM
Is it your account? The email seems to have been changed not the password. Maybe it was locked via email as a lock option is sent to the original as a security precaution.

You can follow the following to try get it unlocked: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0

Post it in here if you can provide it and it has more chance of being unlocked.

I know it's annoying and frustrating but all you can do at the moment is keep reporting them and staff will keep on nuking them. I hope the bot will be back soon and an update has been requested as it's badly needed, especially as these bots are now going to be spamming the forum instead of just PMs, but I don't know what the error is exactly and if it was simple then it probably would have been fixed by now.
