The next release will include pricing sources from Bitstamp, BTC-E, Kraken, BTC China, Coinbase, and Bitpay.

Bitpay is the only one of these doing some sort of average, right? There's more "averaging" services, like:

All of them offer different currencies and some (all?) of them are configurable regarding choice of exchanges.
3984  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why Auroracoin may be the most exciting altcoin of 2014 on: February 23, 2014, 06:56:33 PM
I strongly support Auroracoin

I suggest people think before putting in too much of their savings. The rate might very well take a huge hit by airdrop. Maybe the best time to buy in is after the airdropping has started.
3985  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why Auroracoin may be the most exciting altcoin of 2014 on: February 23, 2014, 06:55:05 PM
Aurora is not interesting. You could spread bitcoin yourself if you wanted to, but there is a slight difference. Bitcoin is actually worth something.
I agree it would be neat to be able to spread $100+ with of Bitcoin to 350,000 people in a single country but very few in this world have the capital to do that.  That's the incredible aspect of altcoins and Auroracoin.  It can be created and if people think it is a good idea, they can adopt it and it is given value.  And now the coins that are going to be given to the Icelandic people are worth over $100 and rising.  All with very negligible startup costs.

Exactly. It's like "money on demand"

LaudaM, you should think about why bitcoin has value. Then think about wether or not Auroracoin could acquire value also.

Zimbabwe is another place where something like this could work, their economy has gone down hill big time over the last decade, time to replace those 1 trillion dollar notes with a cryptocurrency!

There are so many failing economies around the world Smiley what about Argentina? Cyprus?

Well, something similar is being tried in cyprus (by neobee). They're not using a new coin, but bitcoin instead.

So we have at least two interesting experiments of this type (introduction of crypto to a nations people) going on...

Goxcoin is on the nonstop slow pump to 400

It's a gauge of sentiment up to Monday morning as usual on the assumption that there are either news from Mark or fiat deposits rolling in Monday.

sounds like a setup for continuation of the rally no matter what magicaltux pulls out of his magical tuxedo.
3988  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AUR] Auroracoin - a cryptocurrency for Iceland on: February 23, 2014, 01:16:48 PM
I am preparing a hard fork with KGW implemented. Also, I will tweak the block reward, block time and halving time in order to make the confirmation time faster, without altering how fast coins are generated.

Cool.

Would it be possible to have some expert look over your changes or are you confident you're not screwing anything up?

dude even whipped up a nice logo to register (from the application):

however, it turns out this is irrelevant at least regarding European trademark regulations according to this post by bitcoin.de: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=113520.msg1367553#msg1367553

Today on #bitcoin

gmaxwell: wumpus: yea, I understand they had timed automatic reissues... Sad this was also something I didn't know prior to monday before last and is one of the other reasons my "they couldn't have lost much!" position softened to "I have no freeking clue."
alpha125: gmaxwell: where did you find out abotu the automatic reissues?
gmaxwell: alpha125: from mtgox staff and magicaltux ... I had assumed previously that any reissues were manual via customer support but apparently it was just timed.
gmaxwell: you'll also note that they've kept increasing their fees and then even mad paying fees mandatory.
gmaxwell: This suggested to me that they totally misunderstood their problems. (and— I reported that I believed this months ago too)
gmaxwell: e.g. they noticed lots of txn getting stuck, they didn't understand it was because they were producing invalid txn (even though it was reported to them) and so they thought it was just 'full blocks'
gmaxwell: and they increased their fees from 0.0001 to 0.0005 — which was enough to may more than virtually every txn— and then later to 0.001 which is basically astronomic. And then they made it mandatory.
gmaxwell: of course their stalled txn had nothing to do with fees.

Edit: Just to clarify, only quoted relevant parts (maybe I should have inserted "[...]" where applicable). Full text here: http://pastebin.com/DaSph9uT

What a fucking mess. So this explains he silence. They literally might not know if they are solvent or not.

I still don't understand how this can go under the radar. Surely his accounting should output the amount of BTC that should be in the wallet. My company does that for the cash (EUR) funds it holds: it's standard practice to have accounting for that and you can compare (we do this regularly) what accounting says with the amount of cash actually in the coffer.

Did he assume the "stuck transactions" would just never go through (of course they wont because the inputs have been spent by the "sibling tx", but there's still the risk and the sane way to make sure they don't get confirmed later is an intentional double-spend to force the issue as nicely explained by Andreas in this video.

Of course these things are easy to say in hindsight and I kindof feel with magicaltux. On the other hand he could've just hired people to help him (also for the engine issues earlier last year and before that) to help run a clean shop.
3993  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 21, 2014, 11:54:26 AM
Would it not be possible to track the stolen coins and find out what exchange and account was used to sell them?

Probably, if both exchanges cooperate. But if the thieves used Tumblers, it would be damn hard.

If they used malleability to withdraw coins from gox double, they should be verified with gox themselves anyways. If they didn't use fake ids that is..

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking. After magicaltux has fixed his shit, he should have these guys with negative balances in the system.
3994  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: AURORA COIN an undervalued coin with great opportunity ! on: February 21, 2014, 10:14:09 AM
I may look at mining this, but the difficulty must be pretty high if its 50% premined.
What is the block reward etc, i cant find any mining calculators for this coin yet.

You can see some basic blockchain info on http://blockexplorer.auroracoin.eu/chain/AuroraCoin
3995  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: AURORA COIN an undervalued coin with great opportunity ! on: February 21, 2014, 10:12:51 AM
Is this the real deal?

No, it's not what you describe.

If Iceland does essentially replace their currency with AUR (meaning 51% or more), does that mean the marketcap of the AUR will be equal to 51% of all the currency they now have in circulation? How much currency do they have in circulation right now (in USD value, obviously)?

Calm down the horses. Iceland isn't doing anything here. This is a "private currency" at best. It might even be illegal.

It's an experiment. An exciting one.

3996  Economy / Economics / Re: My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost. on: February 21, 2014, 10:08:34 AM
This is all very sad, but does anyone else see the irony of "libertarians" accusing the EU of theft because its bailout of the banks that lost the money they voluntarily lent to them is too small?
You can (usually) pick your bank, but in many circustances – such as the company of this thread – you cannot chose to "just do it yourself", you have to trust a bank.
So "voluntarily" is definitely not the appropriate term.

Enter BITCOIN Wink
3997  Economy / Economics / Re: My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost. on: February 21, 2014, 10:07:44 AM
Bank account is not a "capitalism totem" or "free market totem", bank account is a CREDIT from CUSTOMER to the BANK. You should know this if you put money inside. If bank crash, fractional reserve banking, money disappears.

I agree. However: people are being purposefully mislead into believing that the bank would "safekeep" and "work with" your money.

Further people are falsely lead to be believe their deposits were somehow insured.

I call misleading people like that FRAUD.
3998  Economy / Economics / Re: My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost. on: February 21, 2014, 10:05:09 AM
This is not just free market, this is anarchy.
It's a different beast.
So, what are the differences?
Are you serious?

Anarchy = no rules about anything, you do anything, random warriors of the night assaulting random people.
Free market = only a few economic rules, mostly just preventing fraud and colletting some taxes, the state still exists and acts on other things such as welfare, education, social disorder, etc.

You have misconceptions about anarchism. It doesn't imply "no rules", just "no rulers".

Big difference.

The picture you have in mind of looting gangs of raping criminals has been put into your mind by the media.

Anarchy does not imply chaos or disorder.
3999  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [PREORDER] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: February 21, 2014, 09:30:45 AM
They said the hardware is correct, c'mon, it's just an issue with the case. No big deal.

Bfl said same twice...ehh multiple times...

I can offer to you to drive to Prague and check things out if you pay for expenses. Wink
4000  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [PREORDER] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: February 21, 2014, 09:29:48 AM
I really thought of my Trezor purchase as more of a donation to a cool project than a typical product purchase.

same here

So, I'm happy with having "donated" my bitcoins to the Trezor project even if it fails.

I'm willing to bet it wont fail. So the pussies here can hedge their purchases.

My biggest worry about Trezor right now is not about getting my money's worth, but rather having a society where bitcoins are safe for everyone. C'mon Trezor guys... my grandma is counting on you guys to get to the finish line!

It's not about speed to market, it's about security. I'd rather wait a little longer and have a satisfactory fully functional product than receive something half-baked insecure "on time".

Everyone up in arms currently about trezor missing the deadline again: calm down, do some yoga or other meditation.
