What's your opinion on the new paid member ranks such as Copper Member to help alleviate this sort of spam? I gather people shit post in Politics & Off Topic etc (places prohibited in signature campaigns) just to get their rank up. If someone purchases a membership and then restricts their posting purely to areas related to altcoins (such as altcoin discussion, announcements etc) and keeps away from the rest of the board, do you think this is better overall or does it still detract from the forum? I'm just trying to understand where the balance could be struck.

Paid memberships that are the only way you can have a signature are one of the things I've suggested to combat spam/poor posts and I'm hoping theymos implements further ranks such as Silver & Gold and at some point. I don't think we should limit users to only posting in alt coin boards but if all users who sign up here can't have a signature (or only a very small one) unless they purchase it like they do with Copper Membership I think it will have a significant effect on low quality posts. People farming dozens to hundreds of accounts to exploit signature campaigns will be a thing of the past and everyone will be limited to only the amount of accounts they can afford or deem profitable to use. Theymos doesn't seem too keen on removing signatures altogether but I can't see any good reason why we can't allow them alongside being able to rank up naturally or make an additional "premium" rank with added benefits that can only be acquired by donating. The latter would be a good experiment on its own to see how many people go for it.

3982  Other / Meta / Re: What about those annoying tx accelerator threads in Service section? on: January 14, 2018, 10:42:00 AM
I made a similar topic, no one cares all they do care is forum traffic. there should be some new rules about transaction accelerators, they should provide information about their mining pool. if they are using the same service, posting several threads is spam. forum mods are busy with their own jobs, forum needs moderators with moderating as their full time job.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2598065.msg26439457#msg26439457

It's not about traffic or staff not having time (though I think having some full time staff/admins would be beneficial) and I would happily trash the majority of these threads as long as there is some guidelines regarding them from theymos. At the moment there isn't and staff don't moderate scams and potential ones hence why they're left for the community to police as annoying as it may be.
3983  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League Betting Pool v2.0 | Current pot: £420 on: January 14, 2018, 10:27:25 AM
Hilarious is there a room for one more? If so count me in.  Grin

Yes. It's open to anyone as long as you pay the fee. I'll put you down. Look out for a PM from my main account on Tuesday hopefully. I would have started it monday but there's the last game of the current round on.
3984  Other / Meta / Re: Account locked because my password was changed??? on: January 14, 2018, 10:21:30 AM
Is it your account? The email seems to have been changed not the password. Maybe it was locked via email as a lock option is sent to the original as a security precaution.

You can follow the following to try get it unlocked: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0

Post it in here if you can provide it and it has more chance of being unlocked.
3985  Other / Meta / Re: Spam from @AlexPromotion on: January 14, 2018, 10:18:53 AM
I know it's annoying and frustrating but all you can do at the moment is keep reporting them and staff will keep on nuking them. I hope the bot will be back soon and an update has been requested as it's badly needed, especially as these bots are now going to be spamming the forum instead of just PMs, but I don't know what the error is exactly and if it was simple then it probably would have been fixed by now.
3986  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 14, 2018, 10:13:43 AM
They were just something that naturally evolved here and I don't think signature campaigns were "supposed" to be anything other than people getting paid for a service. But as with any job or industry without rules and regulations being enforced capitalism always gets out of hand and greed and laziness take over as people cut corners and trample over others in any way they can just as long as they can get a piece of the pie and the abuse is happening on both sides. Signature campaigns could have helped improve the quality of posts here but that's only if campaign managers do their job properly and only accept and pay for quality contributions but if there's no requirement for them to do that and punishments for those that don't then why would they bother? All they're doing is wasting time and money (which they would rather just sit back and watch come in). This needs to change. If people started getting penalised for not doing their job properly the culture around here would soon change.
3987  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 14, 2018, 09:35:21 AM
Well, probably at least 95% of people users are only here to either farm accounts or get paid to post so those will obviously leave it alone, but either way it still serves its purpose.

Remember a few years ago when people posted on the forum to learn more about bitcoin?

Well yeah, but times have changed and signature campaigns (and their users) have grown exponentially since then (or more specifically crapcoin campaigns which have/are doing most of the damage). Signature campaigns have always been a problem for as long as I've been a member here but allowing them to go unregulated and unpunished has just caused chaos and now the board is more just some sort of 'earn money online' forum as opposed to a place where you can actually have some quality discussions about bitcoin (which is now essentially just second fiddle). The issue of sig spam was relatively minor back when I first signed up and I think people could only dream of the relative calm there was. It was practically a utopia compared to what it is now but I guess it was inevitable and this is why we can't have nice things.

To be entirely fair, the signature spam, and related nonsense posts is fairly unpleasant...

My issue with the ivory tower is that its placement within the forum more or less makes it an off topic section that allows for a broad variety of threads that I may not be interested in reading. I would say I would rather have the ivory tower be a child of bitcoin discussion, and allow any non-marketplace, bitcoin related threads, even if said thread would also be appropriate in technical discussion, trading discussion, and similar.

Any leads on this  Roll Eyes
Poor newbie, he shall be banned now. How will he support his family if he can't rank up and participate in signature campaigns? Cry

Roll Eyes. Banned. I wonder if this user is a bot. Hard to believe someone would be this stupid to copy and paste in this of all threads.
3988  Other / Meta / Re: Question (mostly) to admin about site policies on: January 14, 2018, 09:08:26 AM
I don't know how he runs his campaigns but he at least benefitted from the bitmixer bot previously which was fairly simple but tallied up posts at least and I think it only counted posts from certain boards automatically. In the past I have just manually verified and counted and discounted non-qualifying posts on the smaller campaigns I have run but don't think I would run them now if they didn't have some sort of automatic process for tallying up qualified posts as it's just far too much work to count up. Obviously manually checking users for post quality also needs to be done too but a bot can do the actual counting.
3989  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 14, 2018, 08:59:59 AM
I think he's more than aware of the issue with spam here and you'd have to be blind or have your head in the sand not to see that. I think he takes it seriously otherwise he wouldn't have created it, but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun in naming it, which may or may not be an attempt to also acknowledge the ridiculousness of the situation, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a little humour especially on this forum.

I assume there are just too many potential consequences with modifying existing boards?  I mean if you're going to be serious about it, why push the serious people into an "Other" subforum so the shitposters can continue to overrun the main boards this forum is known for?  Maybe I'm being too critical, I believe it is a positive addition, and maybe the Tower will become what I would hope it to become... but without visibility, it may not get much attention and most will continue to go to the main boards. Is this just accepting defeat on the main boards and providing a place for people to flee?

I'm sure it can be moved and hopefully will, but maybe there just wasn't a more appropriate place for it at the time or he didn't think too much into its placement. If it doesn't belong as a sub board of Bitcoin Discussion maybe a separate subsection entirely can be created for it. I think it should be placed as a sub of the main board personally but theymos may envision it to include broader topics on economics and politics etc (though we could certainly add those sub boards to there over time).

So why aren't people using the new boards?

Surely it can't be because they can't show their signatures,or increase their post counts. Smiley

Well, probably at least 95% of people users are only here to either farm accounts or get paid to post so those will obviously leave it alone, but either way it still serves its purpose. I would much rather there not be much activity in these boards than loads of half-assed topics just for the sake of it. I'm sure it will grow over time but maybe if it's better placed it will get more traffic and many users still wont even be aware of it or might just be confused about what it's actually about.
3990  Other / Meta / Re: Account is banned on: January 14, 2018, 08:47:14 AM
Well that's not really my problem. I can't or wont unban him without knowing what he was actually banned for in the first place. It could be copy and pasting or some other serious infraction. Again, it's only a newbie account so I would just stop wasting your time and forget about it and move on as there are plenty more crapcoin ICO campaigns you can join.
3991  Other / Meta / Re: Question (mostly) to admin about site policies on: January 14, 2018, 08:42:26 AM
I am a programmer, and I would like to write a support script for ICO Bounty campaign (counting signatures on this forum).

I thought of this earlier as well.

Make a bot that allows the owner to choose which members to monitor.  Then parse all those messages and store them in a database.  You can then show the messages one at a time to the owner who simply needs to click "Yes" or "No" and the results gets tallied in a database.

You could sell the script outright or lease it per month.

One of the campaigns I used to run had a bot that did this. It was very time consuming to go through posts one by one but was effective as people only got paid for posts that I accepted if they met quality standards. I think many other campaigns already have bots or programs that already count/tally up qualifying posts but it's hard to check actual post quality without some form of manual verification. Both should be used in some capacity ideally.
3992  Other / Meta / Re: Account is banned on: January 14, 2018, 08:25:46 AM
Why is it imperative that that specific account is unbanned? It's barely a week old so nothing much had been lost either way. Just create a new account or continue on with this one as nuked accounts are almost never restored especially if all or most of their posts were spam.
3993  Other / Meta / Re: Is this the new trend for spammers/account farmers? on: January 14, 2018, 08:17:18 AM
The local language boards are for native speakers. They're not really supposed to be for people to ask random questions in English, but I'd bet there's more chance you were just spamming rather than this being a genuine request. Besides, many of those countries probably don't even have local exchanges but if you move to a foreign country then either just use your regular exchange and withdraw via your bank account/debit card, find someone locally to trade in cash on localbitcoins or buy a bitcoin debit card which will allow you to withdraw at any ATM worldwide.

It would be much easier to report user, reporting post by post by post is kind waste of time and energy
I think that's a great suggestion.  I've been wanting check boxes for all of a user's posts so I could report multiple posts all from one page...but I know that's never going to happen.  And I'm curious as to what kind of response this will get.  "Report User" along with maybe a field for a brief description of why the user is being reported would be quite handy.  There are many, many users here who just write one-line shitposts, and it's obvious they're doing it to either rank up or meet a bounty quota.  Those posts are zero-value, zero-thought, and they come by the dozens.

It would be helpful and maybe you should request it for the new forum, but with cases like this you can just report one post and indicate there are multiple infractions that need looking into (you could link to them as well if you wish which is helpful but not necessary).
3994  Other / Meta / Re: Account is banned on: January 14, 2018, 07:55:28 AM
Ah, I see you trashed it.

Hi Team,

My brother account is banned for few days. It is showing
"it shows Sorry high2017, you are banned from posting or sending personal messages on this forum.
You have been banned by a forum moderator. You may appeal here: banappeals-w6pquw43@theymos.e4ward.com"

His profile is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1199335

He send mail to this id in last week and follow-up mails too. It seems like no one looked into and responded.

He is not able to post any forum including Meta.

Please let me know what needs to done.

He is actively participating in different ICOs programs. He is not able to communicate in forum.

Please look into this matter urgently and tell me the next step to resolve it.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks

Well how many accounts have you had banned? In the message above it states high2017 but the account you link to is Babebottle.

OK now I understand what you try to mean. No, he is not my own brother. Sorry for misunderstood your point. But, I need to know how my brother profile will be unbanned. Don't you think it is very unfair to ban someone permanently on his/her first post and there is no way to prove and know his/her point. I can see after this ban, they don't able to post/reply on Help/Contact/Meta section. I think there should be particular section/forum to post their request. Also, if there is any provision of chat  pop-up section where members/non-members/banned ones can talk to support staffs, then it will be easy for all of us.
Whats your thinking on it. It can be enhancement request to this site.

As above, they likely wont be unbanned. Accounts are often banned without warning if you break the rules by such things as copy and pasting etc but it's your job to be aware of the rules not Staff to constantly remind you of them.
3995  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help! on: January 14, 2018, 07:35:38 AM
This is a forum. People have discussions, ask/answer questions. If you have nothing to write, then just don't write? Why do you care about ranking up on the forum you have nothing to write about?

Because he's here for the same reason 99% of people now sign up for. He's heard you can make money here by posting so that's why he is so interested in 'ranking up'. Also like the majority of people signing up they often have little to no interest or knowledge of bitcoin other than they heard you can make money here, hence why he's creating such stupid/pointless threads as these:

how do you think doing with crypto currency can ensure a decent life and old age? Will not we then have a broken trough? the world today is developing with such speed, suddenly come up with something more interesting, we can learn something else? Roll Eyes

how long have you been into cryptocurrency?
3996  Other / Meta / Re: Spam from @AlexPromotion on: January 14, 2018, 07:01:13 AM
I've seen many posts like this in the past days:

We offer promotion and trаffic from the forum bitcоintalk and sосiаl nеtworks. ROI for оur servicеs is 600-2000%.
Wе оffer:
- Send private mеssagеs to  Вitcоintalk users (Onlу tо usеrs who visitеd АNN thrеad lаst mоnth)
- Twitter prоmоtion (Wе will do a twеet with a dеsсription of yоur prоject аnd will mаrk оne user on eасh twеet)
- Tеlegram reаl сhat usеrs
- Privаtе mеssages to telegram users (A+ tаrget audiеncе)

This is autоmatiс mеssage. Fоr аll tеrms х conditions write tо tеlеgrаm - @AlexPromotion

Would it be possible to ban based on keywords? A telegram-nickname seems to be quite unique, any Newbie posting it should get an instant-ban. Once such a blacklist is in place, it can easily be extended with new keywords.

We had a bot to crawl and nuke these users but it hasn't been working since we changed to cloudflare. Just report them manually for now and they'll be quickly dealt with.

This is a good idea, since there's a guy pming me and all of my project owners offering bumping services and leaving their Telegram (@hypebtc). I would like that anyone who says that gets banned.

Report them and they will.
3997  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie PM opt-in on: January 14, 2018, 06:53:31 AM
So I think that it should be rare for people to be unaware of it. If a newbie posts a trading thread, then they'll have people posting to remind them.

Nice. Seems to have been pretty effective already as the report messages have pretty much stopped.

I could see this as a good feature here, especially for members who are high seniority. The question
that pops in my mind is, what about people who have to make a new account for recovery of an old
or hacked account? Are we safe to assume that theymos and Cyrus or other staff will be able to get
messages from them still?

He's already addresses this:

You should opt into receiving newbie PMs if you post offers in the marketplace, if you like answering newbie questions, if you're a moderator, etc.

As annoying as it is Staff will have to allow them. The most annoying thing was the actual reported messages which have seemingly stopped now. I don't think I ever got any of the spam direct (which would have been pretty stupid of them to do).
3998  Other / Meta / Re: Account is banned on: January 14, 2018, 06:47:31 AM
It had been nuked...

Is this also your  brother ?

Didn't someone just ask about that account as their "brother"? Sure I saw it but can't find it now and search brings up nothing.

No, I don't know this profile. Please let me know about my query. I am not interested in other profile and not in mood of joking.

It's nuked so it wont be unbanned. It must have been making very low quality posts or rule breaking consistently to be nuked.
3999  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League pool betting Discussion Thread on: January 14, 2018, 06:41:10 AM
For me it was a disaster today, I did only 30 points with 7 matches.
I hope not to lose too many positions this week!

Well I only got ten points so far. I expected many wouldn't do very well after I saw the scores. I narrowly missed out on a correct score in the Spurs game as I predicted 3-0. Hopefully I can reclaim some points on the last two games but I think they will both be difficult and could go any of the three ways but can see draws/very close games.
4000  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 12, 2018, 05:10:44 PM
The name is supposed to be fun. I don't actually mean that people who post in the section are "living in an ivory tower".

I hope it will take us back to the old cafe society era where intelligent and erudite discussions could take place in a pleasant environment.

How about I rename it to Le café d'or, then?

I think that will confuse most and they'd avoid it, which is a good thing  Grin. How about La Tour d'Ivoire?  Roll Eyes

I found the name to be more humorous than anything else. Although, reading some of the responses, I can understand why there would be issues with the name, because most people around here don't seem to appreciate humor much. For me, I guess this brings up the question of whether theymos made this a "fun" name because he is mocking or does not agree with the perception of where the "state of the forum" is at, if he just made it fun... for fun?, or merely created the subforum to respond/acknowledge requests by other members and made the name humorous because he doesn't really take it all that seriously?  I may be overanalyzing, although I'm leaning towards the fact that theymos created this in a serious manner, with a bit of humor, to address or at least acknowledge that the forum is not in a great state with content and spam-like behaviors. Maybe I am being too gullible.  Undecided

OK here is my suggestion.

Change the discusson board to " The Frog Pond"
Change serious discussions to a simple " Bitcoin discussions"
Change the Ivory Towwr to " In depth discussions"

I vote for just Srs Bsns.
