"short" means selling , if thatīs your question
lol,you may sell one half and still hold some ,maybe you are earn more if you do this
I agree with you, OP had made bad decision to not leave a little portiof of his amount. This will be a good knowledge for op to always try leave a little portion to prevent if there will be huge pump in the future. Whatīs then? It keeps rising and you sell the rest ... What if it raises even more? Then youīre at the same point again. So itīs just bad luck. The only way I can think of, to prevent that, is to hold it until it starts falling and sell it then.

Just go to coinmarketcap.com, choose a coin, go to Social tab and follow their twitter, reddit, and from there join their telegram group/slack channel. Download and print the whitepaper, read it, scan everything on the twitter and reddit, keep tabs on the chat rooms, and read up on their bitcointalk announcement and you should get an understanding of what the project is about and how to proceed accordingly. Also tools like coindata, cryptoping are very useful to back up your analysis.
Thank you very much. This might help me as well as the OP.

Well ... Assuming there will be another BTC at any point in near future then it would be a good idea to buy small amounts of every new coin and leave them in itīs wallet until one (or 2 or a few of them) gets really expensive. ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

At least the coin is talked about. This way the name gets more attention. Names are important (who donīt know Coke ?). So it is not too bad to give a coin a "really bad name". ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
