At the risk of waxing political, I learned from my accountant guy, overnight, that the majority of my tax obligations for 2018, were due to Obama's Affordable Care Act.

I cannot begin to describe the bitterness and anger I am currently experiencing.

Picked a bad time to quit drinking. Goddamnit.

Yup... "Net Investment Income Tax" ... got totally blindsided by that one when I was doing my taxes after the 2017 bubble....

Feeling your pain on this one... and rather disappointed it managed to stick around through this latest tax overhaul...

Trying not to be political here, but really I'm hoping Obamacare gets nixed in its entirety.. if only because of THIS TAX....

For anyone who isn't aware..  the NIIT is an additional tax of 3.9% on investment gains for anyone who has a total income (including investments) over 200k ...  so if you sell a significant amount, your long term capital gains are actually 23.9%, not 20% Sad

Oh, and don't get me started on the "Alternative Minimum Tax" ...

So, if you upload your consciousness...  is it really 'you' at that point? Or is it just an exact copy of you, and you are actually dead ?   I've actually been pondering this recently, and I can't get past the continuity of consciousness during the upload process, to believe the end result would still be me.

Deep thoughts...

Go play SOMA (or watch a playthrough). Very interesting story which makes you feel this dilemma first hand.

I agree with you that without continuity it isn't you.
What about anesthesia?

Added SOMA to my bucket list.

Anesthesia is like sleep, I don't consider going to sleep the same as dying. What differs it mainly from a mind upload is that your brain processing is continuous and it's not possible for several "instances" of "you" to exist simultaneously and grow apart.

I mean if I copy your brain and place it in a new host body do you expect to wake up in the other body? What if the original body (with your original brain) is revived as well? You would be 2 separate individuals with no direct brain connection.

I think the only way to preserve continuity is through the "ship of theseus" (see: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus) by slowly swapping out parts. So I believe in rejuvenation and transhumanism.

Edit:
And really play or watch SOMA. It's awesome.

My thinking on this pretty much mirrors yours...  I'm all for transhumanism so long as I can get past the continuity thing.. and pretty much the only solution I can get behind is the gradual replacement route.

More Deep Thoughts..  At what point are we at the transhuman stage?  A lot of us already have artificial parts.. from the simple filled cavity all the way up to artificial heart valves.. Heck it is now possible to live a mostly normal life for a short time with a fully artificial heart......

and SOMA is now on the to-do list   Smiley

I have zero faith in cryopreservation.

I have zero faith in "uploading consciousness".

Bitcoin and Altcoin Prices on the Upward Trend
In a move led by Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency market is seeing a lot of green across the board. This bullish run which saw the leading cryptocurrency break the $5,000 barrier for the first time since November 2018 may signify an end to the protracted downtrend that began after Bitcoin reached its all time high of almost $20,000 in January 2019. I will get excited when I see a resurgence of the "Top 20 days for Bitcoin" thread...

In a static or contracting market, YES - for you to win, someone else has to lose.  There is only a limited amount of pie to spread around.

In an expanding market, NO.  You can both win, because ultimately there is ever more of the proverbial pie to split up.  Just because you are getting a bigger piece, that does not necessarily mean that someone else has to get a smaller piece.  He may just win less.  I guess you could call that a kind-of lose, but I don't. Note:  this does not preclude someone losing because you are winning, it just makes it not a requirement.

Ultimately, however, at some point the universe, and along with it humankind will end.  So we cannot have a forever expanding market.  It will eventually hit a long decline and return to zero.   So in the very long run, the answer is probably back to YES.

In the end, we ALL lose Smiley

Rather depressing isn't it ?

I was just trying to get a count of WO members who ran their own nodes, with or without Lightning.

So yeah.. know the feeling...  the solution:  right now while things are calm, and you aren't caught up in the emotions of a bubble, or a crash... sit down and make a spreadsheet of all your planned buy/sell points.. all the way from buying X at $1,000, up to selling Y at $1,000,000 .. and every point in between (I literally have a buy/sell point at each 5% price increment...)   then just sit back, ignore all the hype, and stick to the plan...  This is what I did, and the stress and second-guessing while going through the 2017 bubble was about non-existent.

everyone always thinks there's gonna be more time. that's the big mistake---not realizing how limited 21 million coins really is and what will happen when the tide finally turns and adoption explodes.

i was always really long term bullish on bitcoin, but i got too caught up in the bearishness of 2014-15. it really traumatized me on some level. i had the opportunity to really stock up back then, but i always thought i would have more time. i have way less coins today as a result. live and learn!

It's just as hard to sell bitcoin when it's $20k than buy it when it was $160. I sat and watched both and was paralized.

So yeah.. know the feeling...  the solution:  right now while things are calm, and you aren't caught up in the emotions of a bubble, or a crash... sit down and make a spreadsheet of all your planned buy/sell points.. all the way from buying X at $1,000, up to selling Y at $1,000,000 .. and every point in between (I literally have a buy/sell point at each 5% price increment...)   then just sit back, ignore all the hype, and stick to the plan...  This is what I did, and the stress and second-guessing while going through the 2017 bubble was about non-existent.

50  Economy / Speculation / Re: What do you think the size of the FOMO going to be when it starts? on: March 11, 2019, 07:33:34 PM
Hype will only start after we cross old ATH at $20k. No one will care of Bitcoin before of that. This happened several times before. there will be no hype or fomo or whatever you want to call it before 2021.

THIS  (at least on the crossing the old ATH) .. Till we cross that old ATH, and are in uncharted territory, "Been There, Done That" will put a damper on any true FOMO hysteria.   To me FOMO means that folks have reached the "MUST BUY AT ANY PRICE !!!"

So yeah.. I put the start of FOMO around $25k ...  after that, let the games begin....
