As far as I know FPGAs are a lot more power hungry, a lot slower, and have a lower density.

A word from my side about crashing miner and hardware

Since some days i have a VTX3D R9 290 X-Edition card and there were and are issues with miner crashes and driver recoveries at stock clocks.

BUT: i know why this happens!

1) after i got the card and put it into my win 7 PC this thing was very very hot. even at 700 MHz i had 93°C with Intensity 14. Higher intensity: crash
-> issue fixed: the original applied heat compound was crap. air gaps inside and some of the chip was not covered. Now with new heat compound it is much better than before.

2) after this heat compound thing i tried higher clock rates.
max stock 975 MHz and Intensity 15: crash after a few seconds. With Intensity 14 crash after <1 minute.
With 900 MHz: really hot but working, even with Intensity 20.
Test with furmark: with 975 MHz and max settings: no problems, works fine for > 5 minutes (just a short test performed)

Then i started HWInfo and checked the Voltages: with Furmark, the GPU voltage is at min somewhere at 0.98xV @ 975MHz.
With vertminer voltage is at 0.94xV @ 900MHz. Also the temps are not as high with furmark @ stock than with vertminer and lower clocks.

-> my conclusion:
for GPU testing purposes, furmark is a toy. If you want to perform real testing, use vertminer. The opencl kicks the GPU to the max and so everything else (regulators, memory) is used extensive.
And if the cards stock voltages are good enough to play games, this does not mean you can use the card with the same clocks for mining.

--> final word
If you encounter crashes, lower your clocks or increase the voltages! And a good cooling is a must!
The latest opencl kernel for the vertminer is even more optimized than the existing cgminer scrypt kernel. You can try to use the latest vertminer kernel also with scrypt cgminer (but needs some changes to work).
I am sure you will see also some sudden crashes when your card is at its limit...

Bufius,

Are you sure the card is OK? I've got Sapphire R9 290s (non-X), the standard reference design (with the hairdryer-like noisy fan).
With the engine @ 947 and mem @ 1500 and Intensity 18 my cards get 76C. Fan runs at 75%.

Higher intensities seem to crash the card at some point, as does a higher clock. Just FYI. I find 93C at 700 wit I14 a bit suspicious.
Edit: Ok, temp was before you fixed the paste problem, but still the crashing is odd. I *can* run the cards at 1000 clock, but they crash after hours/days then. At 85C btw.

There is no relation between Matt Green and Vertcoin, please don't put me in an awkward position
Who's behind Vertcoin Huh  Huh

A group of people who can actually implement groundbreaking features *and* launch all that successfully.
Good enough for me. In time we'll learn I guess.

Boris and ieatm3s,

Thanks for those! I wasn't aware of those techniques.

Mostly because I underestimated the importance of enhanced privacy, I didn't care about who knows where my coins go.
But indeed, considering the recent attention to the criminals using cryptocurrency I'd prefer not to be linked to them.

In the AMA the term Zerocash is mentioned a few times.

A quick google search returned mostly usernames, does anyone have a link to read up on that?

Ah, should that have been Zerocoin? That does yield interesting results...

i have been crying here several times how p2pool was not consistently paying me.  i would get on the payout list and all of the sudden i would be off it, even though i kept mining throughout.

i decided to create my own node and see what happens.  i have mined all night last night, and not once did i get off the payout list.  i have consistently been getting payouts, FOR EVERY BLOCK!

if you are getting shit results from p2p, just create your own node!  i run mine on virtual box instance of linux.  it was a bit strange setting it up but once i got it up and running, it has been smooth sailing with P2P!

one thing i noticed is that my miner shows a SHIT TON of HW and zero WU.  i thought it was a problem, but the payouts are coming in so maybe it something with my node config.  if anyone could shed some light on this, i would be grateful.  i am the only miner on my node, if that helps.

Luthan,

You say you run p2pool in a VM, does it have to be run that way?
Would it be possible to run this in a chroot jail?

I'd think a jail would be less overhead than a fullblown VM...
Asking because I want to try this tomorrow. Out of curiosity mostly.

Just sent some BTC to BTER to buy VTC, any idea how long that'll take to be available?

Should be faster than Crypty, but a ballpark figure would be nice...

Edit: Oh, already there, lol! Yeah, that's faster!
49  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTC] Vertcoin - Adaptive N-factor in Scrypt - No more ASICs on: February 07, 2014, 04:20:04 PM
Interesting, volume on Cryptsy has decreased to 558 BTC (from 1000+ yesterday).

Things finally quieting down there?

Ok, also moving over to bter. Looks good. And has google's 2FA, I like that.

Worth a shot here, start a new thread/poll:

What day should we all move from cryptsy to poloniex en masse?

Give them to to four days and specify an exact time.

See what kind of response you get. I would do it but I am on my phone and hard to move around on here.

Never set up a poll before... I'll look into that tomorrow, going to my bed now.
It's 3 AM here and the past few days have cost me far too much sleep...

But yeah, willing to give that a shot.
52  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTC] Vertcoin - Adaptive N-factor in Scrypt - No more ASICs on: February 07, 2014, 02:00:47 AM
shouldnt all of this settings stuff be in the vert settings thread?
2.5 pages of multiquotes for 14kh in this thread is an awful lot...

I agree... I try to keep refering to the first page, but people don't really seem to understand how to use the info there. TBH I thought I could give 1 line hints but that got kind of out of hand.

People, use the settings thread:

In full agreement with the 'screw cryptsy'. Glad I took my VTC out of there in time.

Also I'm for a coordinated move to PoloniEx. To get some volume there. But that's only useful if most of the cryptsy users is willing to move over...
54  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTC] Vertcoin - Adaptive N-factor in Scrypt - No more ASICs on: February 07, 2014, 01:49:59 AM
Hi, is normal to decrease the Hash??

With normal cgminer I have 14 Khash/s
cgminer for Vertcoin I have 4 Khash/s

With normal minerd I have 70 Khash/s
Minerd for Vertcoin I have 1 Khash/s

same config, I dont know what I am doing wrong.
Any help? I didnt know if I need a prerequisite for mine, or something =S

Gaudi, it's normal for vertminer to be slower than other scrypt-coin miners because it is a different version of scrypt.
Your hashrates are *very* low though, I doubt you'll see any coins at all.

By the way, normal = 14 kH/s in cgminer? Are you mining on onboard graphics or something?
55  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTC] Vertcoin - Adaptive N-factor in Scrypt - No more ASICs on: February 07, 2014, 01:47:22 AM
gettin' pumped @ cryptsy

Can't even load Cryptsy, keep getting 504s... Does it still work for you?

Yeah my bad gateway has greatly improved to gateway timeout.

Wtf. How is it so hard to keep your website online. I do not get it.

Yeah, it's not like BigVern is new to the trade... Should be able to afford a decent server + services by now...

so i just type this in the terminal and it should work ?

#!/bin/bash
export DISPLAY=:0
export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100
vertminer -o stratum+tcp://s.eu.vertcoin.org:3333 -u xxxx-p x -I 19 --auto-fan --gpu-engine=1015 --gpu-memclock=1250 --auto-fan --gpu-powertune=1

... maybe with a lower Intensity like you said ...

Coda,

Don't type the first line in, the exports are needed once after you fire up the computer,

and just type the vertminer line in the terminal. Let me know if it runs.

yes i only type this the first time i open the terminal
#!/bin/bash
export DISPLAY=:0
export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100

so i typed then :

vertminer -o stratum+tcp://s.eu.vertcoin.org:3333 -u xxxx-p x -I 19 --auto-fan --gpu-engine=1015 --gpu-memclock=1250 --auto-fan --gpu-powertune=1

it says:   vertminer: command not found

seems i missed something ...

Coda,

In that howto you linked, you downloaded vertminer-gpu from github.

Not sure where you went wrong, but go to the directory "vertminer-gpu"
(Should be "/home/yourusername/vertminer-gpu" if you followed it)

Just copy vertminer to /usr/bin as root.

Code:
sudo cp /home/~/vertminer-gpu/vertminer /usr/bin

If i type in those commands before my vertiminer, if it does not work will it mess up my usual miner getting me 632-640 khash? So far since I haven't got this to work last 2-3 days, ive been going back to reg mining so won't loose much time till I get this vertiminer coin working

This command will simply copy vertminer to your /usr/bin directory, so it's in your path. It will not interfere with cgminer.

have 7950 I want to try but I have this
Vertcoin-CGMinerAleks_NR3 cgminer
says not vertiminer where to get vertiminer I though this was official miner I have?

Yeah it looks like you have the right miner. It's just a cgminer that's been modified to use scrypt:2048.
Simply rename that cgminer (the excutable) to vertminer, so you know that's the modified one.
