hashrate doubled over the last few days

correct, avalon has shipped a few batches, and they have been assembled. You see on the toplist of hashers ,a few accounts with 3TH each, which equals to one batch of 10K avalon chips.. "fun times ahead"..

oh ok i thought it was due to the 400gh units from bitfury and knc

i;m not refering to the leds on the fpga controller board. ( i suppose the avalon wiki write up on left and right leds refers to these 2 on the fpga board)

just now while it was running on a stop-gap measure (getting power from 2 psu) the led fan was running with a blue colour while the led behind it that normally blinks green, shows red.

the power meter that measures how much power the miner draws, shows just 3 watts while the miner pool's stats shows a 90+gh/s over a 2 min period.

been having some problems with my avalon of late

at first i was running the older firmware 20130721 then it suddenly keeps shutting down or rebooting for no reason.

so i updated to the latest firmware 20130803? and the problem goes away for a week or so

this morning it happens again

initially i was thinking it needs a shutdown every 1-2 days as it has been running for days on end, except for reboots when a fan speed setting is changed or miner pool switching.

I've been watching the status page and it showed no temp spikes or fan speed spikes before the shutdown happens.

I've isolated the problem to the 4th module (it has been mining for 25mins with no issues, will continue to monitor) which was added to the unit by the seller after 1 of his batch 1 3-module avalon had problems with the pdu or controller.

according to a miner profitability chart i use (works nicely for me so far)

in feb 2014, it will no longer be profitable to mine for bitcoins as power coins will outstrip any bitcoins mined. even if price of bitcoins go up, I can extend it for 1  maybe 2 mths.

right now i am considering whether should I buy watercooling blocks (custom so cost is not recoverable) and associated parts (which i can sell/re-use to recover part of costs) or host it at a co-location and dont go for watercooling (remain on stock cooling)

based on the best offers I have on hand, costs of hosting it for 6mths and running it at home for that long (power+watercooling+cooling costs)  are the same..

the difference is, after 6 mths, the hosting costs is recurring, it will cost me $x every month whereas if i host it at home, the watercooling parts are one-off deal.  so the monthly costs is less than $X

My question is, what can the avalon do after bitcoin is no longer profitable? what can i use to mine or sell it to someone to run sha-256 based programs?

having some strange problems with my batch 1 4 modules.

What power supply?  To run 4 modules you should replace the stock PSU for sure.

My Batch 1 is humming along fine now with 4 modules at 348MHz (--avalon-auto) with 1d16h uptime.  I installed a Corsair HX1050.

anyone tried relocating the PDU to accomodate longer PSUs?
Yes, I did with the Corsair AX1200i.

It works fine. I simply used two zip ties and placed it vertically against one side of the case.


how did u make sure it didn't move or short circuit?
