41  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best place to learn about Bitcoin? on: July 06, 2019, 10:37:41 AM
Hi there I have been asked about Bitcoin by so many friends lately, its getting tiresome to explain myself over and over again, I mean its great that they are interested and keen (I suppose the price going up causes the interest! lol) but seriously would be great if I could just point them to a resource of some sort and say "hey go there and learn about it", would save so much time and energy. Like a video resource or portal or some sort of playlist?

Great question.

I try and show my friends 'how to fish' rather than giving them my catch. One of the most crucial things is to learn how to actually find relevant information for yourself and filter out the garbage out there.

Undoubtedly only a small % of the population will become proficient at this but that's normal and critical thinking is of utmost importance. If you can't think for yourself and make your own informed decisions then you are never responsible for any of your actions.

I teach by example, that seems to work best for me.

For instance, when friends drop by they usually treat me like a technical dictionary and expect me to answer any kind of question related to IT: from coding to blockchain to economics and beyond. I don't know everything, although I am a designer, a coder and a crypto enthusiast. What I do know is how to search for the right answer. This kind of reliance on others is part of the problem in my opinion. If you always depend on someone else to bring you food then you will never be able to provide for yourself when the time comes.

So what I do is open up a search engine and start typing some relevant keywords in it. Then go through the search results one by one and analyze them, quickly skipping through the irrelevant spammy content. Then I get back to them in a couple of seconds or minutes with the answer. They are an observer to this 'process'. I repeat this whenever circumstances allow. After a decent sample size I found a few of my friends doing the same thing and that was indicative of the effect my transparency had on these individuals. It works, but it takes time and it depends on each person. You can't make anyone do, think or understand anything with sheer force. They have to want to do it for themselves.

Knowing that I can't change anyone but myself helped me a lot and made my life less stressful and frankly easy and more fun!

Having said all that, you can still share some nuggets of information when needed, but make sure you do not overwhelm the person with 20 links, 5 books and 8 video playlists. That's not helpful at all in my experience.

What I do like to do is just share one video, one name of a person I respect in the space and maybe one website that is easy to go through.

If they really are "interested and keen" as you stated, then they will certainly be successful in finding the right teacher or resource for them. Just give them a little nudge, nothing more. There is no burden on you unless you accept being their teacher. You will find the whole experience more powerful when your friends that can now do their own research come back to you with new stuff they thought of, relevant information and debate your position with valid arguments. That makes me happy: I'm not the teacher anymore, I'm part of a 'team' where people can actually have a healthy debate, as opposed to a boring monologue/seminar type of thing.

Anyway, good luck!

42  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How to Prevent been a crypto addict. on: July 06, 2019, 10:08:56 AM
honestly, it is getting serious that most people spend over 18 to 19 hours these days on systems and mobile phones watching the market, trading on the move with their mobile. the addiction is getting out of hand. i think i am probably getting into this kind of life.
what could be the possible means of prevention. i need to have my normal life back.

Trading is only what one perceives it to be, ranging from a profession all the way to outright gambling and a dangerous addiction.

If you see it as an addiction and want to get out of it then deal with it the same as you would with any other bad habit like smoking or drinking.

Therefore you can either lower the position sizes, lower the trading frequency, substitute it for some other less dangerous activity or simply quit 'cold turkey'. Depending on your personality and the way you see the world, one should work better than the other options. Experiment and find out what works best for you.

PS: also having fun activities offline with loved ones, in nature, with pets, kids and friends should help you get your bigger picture back and thus forget all about the addiction and mitigate the withdrawal symptoms, just give it time and keep at it.

Good luck!

50  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Day trading! The good the bad and the ugly on: June 24, 2019, 10:01:37 PM
I will break this into 2 sections:

#1

Am not really new in crpyto world but am always scared of taking the risk of trading.

The question you might want to ask yourself here is "Why am I always scared of 'risk'?". Only you can go deeper into your mind and find your fears & beliefs.

A few tips:

- trade smaller position sizes (scale down)
- trade to get experience in the market and become a consistent winner, profits will follow (don't focus on money)
- don't take your personal life into your trades (had a fight with your loved one? it's a no trade day today)
- learn about what risk is and embrace good setups (with nice Risk-to-Reward)
- don't margin trade and use stops
- keep a personal trade journal (not easy!)

#2

Quote
As an experienced trader what are the advantages and disadvantages of day trading. Please I need your opinion. I really want to know those risk so as to avoid them. Then the possible way to maximize profit.

This is closely related to the first section but it's because you don't understand what risk is at a fundamental level.

Maximizing profits should not be your priority at this point. Leaving profits on the table as they call it is one of the last and most difficult things to overcome even for pro traders.

Let me put it this way: trading, day trading and especially scalping and being consistently profitable is one of the most difficult quests you could undertake. Period. There is no glam involved really. It's all just hard work, daily study for the rest of your career, passive setup monitoring, waking up in the middle of the night when alarms start (especially for day traders/scalpers), on-the-fly TA, analysis and more analysis. Back-testing, head-scratching, eye strain, back strain, balance issues with family and loved ones and more.

These are the struggles or professional traders that work for themselves in their homes, wearing shorts and a t-shirt at 2AM in the morning or whenever the market makes some edges possible for you.

Having said that, I strongly believe trading is one of the best careers one could have. Financial freedom, no boss, you're able to work whenever wherever and surprise your loved ones using your profits. If you like responsibility, trading is definitely for you. You are the only one responsible for your trading and your thoughts, emotions and actions. It's a huge relief to know deep down that you will always be able to adapt to any market conditions and make constant profits. Even after taking a vacation -- it's like riding a bike -- the skill will forever shadow you.

All that ^^ but ONLY for a small percentage of people. For the rest it's a continuous struggle and a gamble really. Why? Very few really want to become traders. Most just want the profits, signals, someone else constantly doing their TA and telling them when and where to enter/exit a trade. No work, no reading, no real trading and technical analysis, no journal, nothing. Just Netflix & chill pretty much. Right? Nothing wrong with that as long as it is a conscious choice. Most would fall in the trap of kidding themselves into thinking they are "traders". Nope. I'm doing crunches in my mind while watching KPOP videos all the time and I don't see any 12-pack yet. Why? Smiley

I'm leaving you with a few more tips:

- read (or listen to the free audiobook on YT) Trading in the zone by Mark Douglas (you will know if trading is for you pretty much)
- learn how to do your own TA and don't be scared of being wrong
- if you don't have food on the table, don't trade -- you're not in the appropriate environment to play your 'A' game (the best traders don't give a flying F about the money and neither should you)
- don't 100x on Bitmex, the math is against you (duckduckgo this for more info)
- always be inquisitive about everything related to trading, stay curious and remember learning is not something you finish in school (if you believe this then you're stuck in life)
- follow others on Twitter/YT to learn how they think, not how to trade (search for Philakone, his material is helpful if you're ok with his personality)
- homework: answer this question for yourself "What moves the market (price)?" (when you get it you will acquire a bigger picture)
- if you don't understand and always know your risk going into a trade, you can't be a consistent winner -- risk is probably the most important thing in trading alongside mindset/psychology
- life and loved ones always come before trading or anything else for that matter (stay healthy)

Good luck in your endeavors, hope you make it!

Also try and learn some basic forum functionality (ie. don't quote the OP when it is a massive post -- it only clutters the thread and makes it less readable for others).
