41  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter: Dedicated Mining ASIC Project (Open for Discussion) on: December 31, 2012, 02:47:24 PM
Actually i see no reason to reinvent the wheel here..
Either use the chips within a spec that requires no heatsink or use thermal epoxy to bond small commodity BGA RAM sinks to the chips and mount the PCBs in 5 1/4" 4-in-3 HDD cages that comes with standard 120mm fan.

Mount the cages in standard HDD or ATX tower cases(12 bays) and you could have 16 PCBs per case x 16 chips(at least) per PCB for a total of 256 chips per case. 256 x 1.3W = ~333Watt per case, perfect for a standard PC ATX style PSU.

Final throughput would conservatively be around 85Ghash per system. Servicing shouldn't be too much trouble either, it's all stock PC components.
If using a PC to control the PCBs, using 1 USB connector per PCB, it's within reach of most standard motherboards too. Can scale it up/down easily to get the best balance as needed.

BOM for each system:

HDD Tower case incl. 400W ATX PSU = ~$70-80
4 x HDD cages w/120mm fan= ~$60-75
256 x BGA heatsinks and Thermal epoxy = ~$30-40
ATX mobo + cpu + ram = $80-120 (Optionally customer installable, could be replaced with a USB hub to have single PC control multiple cases)
16 x usb cables = ~$15-20

So ~$300 in parts per COMPLETE system, which can be sourced MUCH cheaper in China, above prices are what they could be found for here in Euroland.

Examples:
HDD cage(can be found much cheaper, just an example)
HDD Tower case (12 & 13 bay versions available too)

It's very un-Bitcoin to have to trust any particular party, and it really doesn't matter whether it is benign. The only way to address this concern is to split hashing power into different stations and introduce some degree of social insulation between them. This may very well be easily doable. Maybe not though. You may still view it as a PR move, but I think it is much more defensible.

Thing is, splitting it between pools still requires exactly same solo-mining.  In both cases you have to trust friedcat not to 51% attack - as there's no way to FORCE him to split it between pools.  So as there's no way to secretly double-spend, splitting between pools achieves absolutely zero in practical terms - and so shouldn't give any PR benefit.  Maybe in practice it WOULD give PR benefit - but I don't believe we should be pandering to the ignorant who don't understand simple logic just so they feel happier that somehow some need for trust has been removed (when it hasn't).

Why not just use a decentralized Pool like P2Pool?
That should at least provide some transparency.

I can confirmed that payment was received.

Just sad you won't be continuing the asset, it really was nice while it lasted  Grin

Oh and thanks for doing such a good job  Cool

45  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] PLATINUM Asset Backed Security (ABS) on: October 12, 2012, 05:10:42 AM
For those holding PLATINUM Assets: I am waiting on account details from Nefario so I can pay out the face value of the PLATINUM assets plus the two latest interest payments owing from the 4th and 11th of October.

Sounds good, nice to have a succinct statement to relate to. That's pretty rare in the Bitcoin world heh
Just sad the ABS won't continue. I think you handled it admirably and paying out the shares without quibbling is commendable as well Smiley

I know I'd be interested if you ever decide to start trading again.  Wink

For now i guess we'll just have to see if Nefario actually comes through and provides the asset holder info.
46  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MtGox Volatility Trading Bot [GMVT-BOT] on: October 12, 2012, 04:53:16 AM
So how is the GLBSE closure going to affect GMVT-BOT?
47  Economy / Securities / Re: Critique of the various businesses run by usagi on: October 03, 2012, 11:03:29 PM
I think it is possible to gain knowledge as you go, but the scale of your business should never exceed the scale of your capability (YARR).

Well.. you could always insure it with infinite Ego if you lack capability and/or expertise, I suppose  Roll Eyes

Anyway.. Is this going to be the "Best of Usagi" thread? - I'm sure some psychology or economics major will end up owing their degree to Usagis flamboyant use of BistroMath and rampant self-denial, would be nice if they had a comprehensive catalog to choose from,  I think it should at least make 'Movie of the Week' Grin

BTW: Anyone actually understand how "NYAN"(no .A .B or .C) fits into the Tetrahedron scheme of things?

Awesome!
V. 2.1 kernel works flawlessly on my Linuxcoin 2.0 rigs (SDK 2.4 + 11.5 catalyst, HD5850/5830) generally + 3-4MH/s across the board compared to Diapolo 17-07
Excellent job!  Grin

56  Economy / Goods / Re: WTS: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 + Dirt 2 [Steam vouchers] 0.5BTC on: August 01, 2011, 12:31:11 PM
DIRT2 has been reserved for 12H.

There are only THREE copes of MW2 left, should have been four, but 'kidage' the scammer made off with one, so there'll be no more sending codes out before payment is received.  Embarrassed

There has been quite a few inquiries about reserving copies, please bid directly in this thread so everyone can get a fair chance at making the winning bids.

The 3 people with the highest bids on Wednesday the 3rd of August @ 20:00 GMT/UTC, will get a code.

Bids start @ 0.5BTC ea.

Happy Bidding!

Price: 0.5 BTC each, or best offer.

You know you're a bitcoin miner when...

  • The guy on the Harley asks you to turn down the noise cause he can't hear his bike..
  • Your best bet to pay the electricity bill is making it flip past 999999.9KWh
  • Your water-cooled masterpiece provides central heating for half the neighborhood
  • Thom Beers wants you to  star in "COINZ" the reality docu-soap
  • The exchange rate on mtgox must go up by atleast $5 by afternoon or 'Big Louie' will break your legs for failing to pay off the loan on your rigs

i think that's all i got for now  Grin

I'm getting this error when i try to use your 2.0 kernel on Phoenix 1.5/Linuxcoin 2.0(Debian live)
Works just fine on my Win7 x64 box though, so guessing it's specific to linuxcoins default complement of packages.
