41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GPUC] GPU Coin | Mandatory Wallet Update on: May 11, 2014, 02:18:23 AM
This is what I was afraid of... I match Piotrsama, but not DougB62.
42  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GPUC] GPU Coin | Mandatory Wallet Update on: May 11, 2014, 12:35:21 AM
I think I'm ready to unfreeze GPUC on Poloniex, but I still need to verify I'm on the correct chain. Can someone (preferably more than one person) post the latest block number AND the block hash for that block?
43  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: deleted thread on: May 10, 2014, 08:52:41 PM
Each block explorer is on a different chain. Which block chain is the correct one? The one where block 4250's hash is 00000000007d6c9f4c2b673bf6dc74d1e7051c2c7cce378e347d6dfaf8b794c4, or the one where it is a7aeb9f4c948b8591eaf1fff597e6a207c51a8e6472e618967cb26eb4146cb27?

the correct hash always got lots of 00000

Well, something more definitive would be good. Do we even know which is the correct chain? I updated the wallet and resynced, and it synced to the same chain it was on before.

He received a large double withdrawal from Poloniex, and was very willing to return it, despite some difficulties in accessing the funds.

I've split the database across two servers, and the site should be much faster now.

Hi Everyone,

I apologize for the recent delays. I got through loads of tickets today, but there are still more. I think I got all of the ones about XCP deposits.
48  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GPUC] GPU Coin | Mandatory Wallet Update on: May 06, 2014, 11:13:57 PM
NO. Poloniex was hacked a few days ago and froze a lot of wallets.

Now now -- Poloniex repelled a hack attempt and froze a lot of wallets.

Is there a new thread? I vaguely recall the coin had been taken over and the current source is on a different git repository than the one in the ANN post.

Just want to confirm that Poloniex has received the 1400 XBC in full.
50  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]BitcoinPlus (XBC) / Crypto, Fiat, Bullion pairs / Multipool / Bounties on: May 03, 2014, 11:28:38 PM
Just wanted to let everyone know that the address where the 1400 XBC are going has been changed. It is now: BG24FkmmGwNCKhUT8846A53xR8RTPdRnt4

This is because of the recent move to a new wallet server and the need to use new private keys.
51  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EXCHANGE] Poloniex - Crypto Exchange with BTC/NXT on: May 03, 2014, 07:27:44 AM
It's coming back very soon now.

mugwampbro, I hear you, I really do. I haven't been able to duplicate the log-out issue, and I will change the Captcha. But I need to get the site running again first.

Let me ask you guys this -- is there any defense against incompetent systems administrators? They decided this guy was me. Are they going to say "sorry, you're locked out forever"?
53  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EXCHANGE] Poloniex - Crypto Exchange with BTC/NXT on: May 03, 2014, 04:34:44 AM
Nobody else is concerned that this person was able to ssh to the server without firewall rules blocking him?

Sounds like the only reason anyone even knew what was going on was due to the entire server being down and a bunch of wallets being offline.

The provider, as most providers do, allowed booting into "recovery mode." They did this first via support tickets, then got on the phone to get the password reset. Ordinarily, firewalls are up at all times on all servers.
54  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EXCHANGE] Poloniex - Crypto Exchange with BTC/NXT on: May 03, 2014, 02:18:14 AM
Why did your hosting provider have root access to a server with wallets?  If your hosting provider has super admin you have no security.  An attacker or employee you rob you at will.

They told me on more than one occasion that they could not access any of my servers without the root passwords. Evidently they meant "unless you don't have it."

Balances are all fine, and deposits will all go through. Even if you send them now they will go through, but they might be delayed.

I have just had word that the OS is being installed on the new server, so I should hopefully have the site and many of the markets up tonight.
56  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EXCHANGE] Poloniex - Crypto Exchange with BTC/NXT on: May 03, 2014, 12:00:22 AM
I'm not sure how long it will be. A new server is being set up right now, but it might not be ready until tomorrow. It shouldn't take more than a few hours after that to get the site running. I'll update you all when I have a better idea of the timing.

It is likely that when the site does come back up, several alt markets will remain frozen until all wallets are moved.

Thank you all for your support and patience!

I would advise you to stop sending deposits. Not all wallets were on that server, and the odds are very very tiny that the attacker was after lesser-known alts, but it could only make things easier if you wait until the site is back up before sending more deposits.
58  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EXCHANGE] Poloniex - Crypto Exchange with BTC/NXT on: May 02, 2014, 10:44:03 PM
All funds are safe. Poloniex does use cold wallets.

What happened was an attacker used social engineering to gain root access to a wallet server. This was made possible by absolutely jaw-dropping negligence on the part of the hosting provider. Fortunately, I caught the attempt in time and was able to shut down the server before anything was taken. All BTC has been moved into cold storage, and then next step is to set up a new server with a different provider.

Please stop sending BTC to your old BTC deposit addresses. The funds will not be lost, but all new addresses must be generated, as I must assume the old wallet is compromised. It is very unlikely that it was, but "unlikely" is not good enough.

I appreciate everyone's patience while I take proper security measures before bringing the exchange back online.

I'm working on it. Please be patient.

Here is the address for the 1400 XBC that will cover the loss at Poloniex: BG2uQ31iQssmJpiVXBLLUwqZ3HkFUFknuo

I wanted to post that publicly so people could track it.
