41  Other / Meta / Proposal to Moderators on: June 20, 2019, 05:35:47 PM
Mods, I'd like to propose a new section under Mining that relates to hosting. I know now these discussions are currently put under the Marketplace and then Services or Service Discussion. But as you well know it's easy to get lost in the sea of adds for iStrippers and Signature Campaigns...

If you think about it mining Pools are a paid service as well, yet they have a specific section and rightly so. Hosting, just like pools is extremely important to miners and we need to foster in-depth technical discussions, reviews, and overall peer experiences.

Thanks for your consideration!

42  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: New Bitmain S9 Firmware Preliminary Testing With Data on: June 19, 2019, 06:18:18 PM
I'm not sure I would say better, I would say LPM is a nice all around f/w and pretty much required if you need/want SSH access.

I ended up flashing 2x S9 and 1x S9i to the new firmware and running them all at -0.5TH. After 12+ hours I am showing more than a 60W decrease, so far it's actually close to a 100w savings with a very similar ambient temp as yesterday. Maybe this is due to autotune settling in and saving wattage on fan speeds. Not sure, I definitely need to let them run much longer for a good average and I'll be able to report back with better accuracy.

Good question, I did not test, but it would be good to see the frequency and the voltage of each F/W settings. What is the best way to test that? Can it be queried from the API? Read only is still allowed.

Great review Hagss, thank you!

Big issue is that Pango has delivery until October!
Anyone know how to buy direct from microbt? I can't even load their page to see their delivery date.

https://www.microbt.com/ is the link I use, but they show all their products with delivery dates of Oct 8th-15th. Basically not many people have miners available right now unless you want to pay crazy high broker fees...
45  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: June 19, 2019, 04:19:51 AM
Has anyone played around with the new Multi-Option firmware released last month?
Also seems to fix some security issues and other problems.

Yes, extensively Smiley Check out my post in the mining software section.
46  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Be aware of fake firmware floating around. on: June 19, 2019, 02:26:00 AM
Also be aware - related to the above - that there are Windows viruses that do in fact change your pool settings in any miners they can find and point your miners to mining for someone else.

While standard manufacturer S9s so not allow this virus to affect your miners, a program like awesome miner has the standard option to allow such viruses to get into your miners.

This is my fault Kano, I did not know that I had enabled the setting in AM's Antminer API Access option page.
47  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / New Bitmain S9 Firmware Preliminary Testing With Data on: June 19, 2019, 01:04:35 AM
Mods, please, oh please do not merge this with the other thread. People need to see the subject line, as this has a day's worth of data (work) on my part Smiley

Firstly! I hope Bitmain continues to release firmware with this kind of adjustability. Also note that this F/W disables SSH, so if that's important to you don't use it.

This is really nice firmware, it gives you a total of 13 settings counting normal.

Below are the preliminary test results, I say preliminary because each setting was run for roughly 30 min. Ideally each one would be run for 24 hrs or so, but I did not want to wait 2 weeks. Power usage and ambient temps were taken from an APC AP8941 "smart" PDU. Other data taken from the miner status page. Run time ~ 30 min each which is three polling cycles on the PDU. The S9 used to test is a February 2018 13.5 Th/S S9 with an APW3++ PSU. Please note the ambient temperature as this room is not temperature controlled and varies as the day heats and cools.

Here's some rough earnings estimates at current difficulty and $0.06 kw/hr pricing, it's sorted by daily net income.

48  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining: Adding Solar Home Now, as "Mining Hedge" for future 2020 miners? on: June 17, 2019, 06:23:30 PM
I am pretty sure I read an article a while back where Hawaii was having this exact issue. Their infrastructure could not handle the influx of solar power electricity being generated by residents, I *think* they might have been charging them or something crazy.

Now the tin foil hat side said this was just the power companies trying to restrict or penalize solar use, you can make your own assumptions, but it is an interesting development.
49  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: looking for a location to host my miners. Anyone know of a good spot, price wise on: June 16, 2019, 05:23:27 PM
Just a thought as well, if you are buying new miners to be hosted Pangolinminer , is offering hosting on miners bought through them. They are a distributor for whatsminer gear.

I have 2 M21S on order with Pangolin and will host with them. I plan on doing some sort of review/write up on the whole process. So if you can wait you can see how that pans out.

Like I said in Discord, if we get 3 blocks this weekend I'll go vegan for the rest of the month Smiley

1 down 2 to go...

You could double dip if the miners heated the house, but then you'd have more over capacity Smiley

I think the main thing is making profitable miners that will live in a residential setting as I do not believe you can treat the over-capacity as "free" like some might try to do. It also seems to me you'd eat up a lot of profits/benefits trying to work out air flow, sound deadening, and electrical work.
52  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Quiet [40 dB, 8 THs/500 W] Hotmine Convector Miner. Product Overview on: June 15, 2019, 02:15:08 AM
it is a space heater that mines
not a miner that heats...

I get the whole space heater that mines, but who would spend that much on a space heater!

Maybe they are trying to raise the production quantity and thus reduce the price per unit?

I've seen a lot of companies on Kickstarter do that. They will establish levels and perks for each level of funding/purchase, they range from just a thank you to extra features or discounts based on quantity.

It really is a neat idea, just way too expensive for most residential elec rates.
55  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Need help for cooling ASIC-s on: June 13, 2019, 04:00:59 AM
AC has never proven to be effective when cooling miners. By the time you spend the money on the AC unit and electricity you're usually losing money. I won't even enter the "free elec" argument Smiley Plus, AC units generate heat.

Anyway I have 3 ASICS, a 6 GPU rig, an old HP DL580 server and 2 HP storage chassis. I run these in the ambient Texas heat where the intake temps in the summer are easily 40C+ (last year I had days of 112F). When I just had the ASICS I ran them via 6" ducts. That did OK, but the ducting added 2-3 deg C to miner temp. Now I run the above in a room with two 24"x24" openings and a 3000 CFM exhaust fan. Nothing overheats and the units actually run cooler this way. No doubt because the miners are not ingesting their own heat.

Bottom line, yes, you can run this stuff in hot environments with no AC, removing exhaust is key because 40C is "cool" compared to the ASIC chip temps.

OK, perfect, thank you. I noticed on Microbt's site they list all the LPM firmware as "coming soon"
57  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Whatsminer M20 is announced and available for pre-order on: June 12, 2019, 03:51:51 PM
The model numbers and specs you are posting have me super confused, are you testing an M20 or M20S? The Microbt site shows M20 is 45TH and M20S is 68TH.

P3 Killa watt ez works on my 240V 30A line just fine. We can source them and the cable your want for a package if needed.

Interesting, everything you read says only up to 125VAC???

Did you see this on eBay? Might save a few bucks if it's a good meter.
