41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 1 guy owns a 30th of all the bitcoins in existence!? on: November 16, 2013, 11:37:32 PM
So, I just realized that Ross Ulbricht - former owner of Silk Road - owns a huge proportion af all the bitcoins in existence. Today we hit the 12 million mark, and this single man is estimated at owning 400,000 bitcoins in his personal wallet. Which is ~ a 30th of all the bitcoins in existence right now. That's insane!
42  Economy / Speculation / Re: Does not it bother anyone that BTC value increasing too fast? on: November 16, 2013, 11:18:42 PM
I honestly can't see bitcoin continuing like this forever. It's price is increasing at such a rate that I believe it must at some point collapse under it's own weight. The price will drop so severely that most disregard bitcoin for the foreseeable future and it is left at a meager price with only hardcore enthusiasts still using the currency.
43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 12,000,000 BTC on: November 16, 2013, 11:15:52 PM

So much to go still...

Will it survive until it's last coin has been mined?

Or a certain government's will crawl out of it's skin to kill it?

Stay tuned folks.
Surely, by the time that mining only gets you 1 satoshi in however many years that is, it will not be anywhere near viable to mine anymore. It would cost so much more in electricity to mine than what you would earn unless bitcoins price soars to the point where 1 satoshi costs hundreds of dollars. I guess that almost seem like a possibility at the moment the way the price is going but i don't think it will rise forever, it will collapse some day soon under its own weight without the needs of governments to intervene.

I never really understood the point of these sites... It doesn't even have half the features IRC has. Did people earn a lot of money by chatting there?
I had a bot hosted there with around 100 mBTC on the account. I never deposited a penny there either, all earned through that site. Unfortunately the balances have been reset to 0 now though Cry

I think this is relevant.

Well, that's certainly depressing. I think we all just need to wait off and see what admin says.

IMO, http://whiskchat.com/ is much better than coinchat.
The design could do with some work, and how much of the backend is your own work?

Nice to see it back up Cheesy. Make open a donation address for some support?
Thats the idea but I'm waiting on randomcloud to see what he want us to do about that.

Unfortunately many problems have occured over the past couple weeks and TradeFortress is having some issues. For this reason we, as the CoinChat community, have taken it upon ourselves to relaunch CoinChat. Many thanks go to randomcloud for his generosity in purchasing the new server. However, he can't afford to run it indefinitely. We need your help to start up this amazing community once more and to help us raise funds.

You can help in many ways, by donating to help us raise funds, by spreading the word, even just by using the site once we launch it. We need to pull together and stay strong as a community. We need to educate people about bitcoins and help shape the future of them. We need to give our people somewhere to come and let off steam in a chat room full of all kinds of people. Where ideas are born and relationships forged.

We can do this, I know it!

Any speculations or comments about what has happened regarding inputs.io, TradeFortress or any other related matters are not welcome here. This topic is about the future of CoinChat, not its past.

Please come speak to us on the temporary coinchat server here. As this is only temporary, withdrawals, tips and deposits are not functional.

Does anyone have a screenshot of what script coinchat was based-off of?
I might be able to make a generic version (eh, it's worth a try if it makes people happy).
I've made something similar already when I was bored but i think we should leave it to TF, I'm sure he'll get it going again soon enough. It was a Node.js application using the socket.io plugin. Fairly simple really, but TF is a clever guy and had a very nice implementation of it all.

54  Bitcoin / Project Development / New idea for a bitcoin related site - help with brainstorming!! on: November 06, 2013, 07:51:51 PM
Good day to my fellow bitcoiners,

I want to present to you an idea I've been mulling over for a new site, the original idea was not my own but in fact a suggestion by a fellow member of coinchat, however I'm afraid I can't remember who so let me know if it's you! The basic concept is that it's a site for people like myself to advertise freelance work and service they wish to provide in exchange for bitcoin. Now this has probably already been done to some extend but I have big plans for this site and it will be unique in many ways. I'm debating a transaction system much like eBay and PayPal that will ensure utmost security. Therefore, the person requesting the service sends money to the site, who then holds onto it until the service has been completed, at which point the money is passed on to the worker. This way there's no 'you first' or trust issues as the site will act as an innocent middle man that makes sure everyone is happy.

Now there are many more possibilities with a site like this and I wanted to put the idea out there and see if you guys have any ideas to contribute. I'm a web developer and can physically make the site by myself so any offers of technical help, whilst appreciated, are not needed. However, I'm not the most creative person in the world so what I want from you guys as part of this amazing community is ideas for functionality, features and even design (my web design has always been somewhat boring). Even name suggestions are welcome!

Let me know what you think!

Obviously there is nothing to stop you from stealing the ideas here and making the site yourself, nothings been patented or copyrighted, but I would hope that as the honest people you are that we can all work together and make an awesome site where everyone is happy. Smiley
55  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Tutorial] Writing a bot for coinchat using the coinchat-client NPM module on: September 16, 2013, 06:39:51 PM
This is really nice. I wrote a tutorial on making a bot from scratch here but ill be sure to link to this post too since it makes things a lot simpler! Really great work, keep it up! Cheesy
56  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [TUTORIAL] Node.js - Making a chat bot for DogeChat on: August 29, 2013, 11:58:25 PM
I have removed this tutorial due to a huge increase in the number of pointless bots on DogeChat that are nothing but clones of this example code written by totally inexperienced programmers who end up asking me to write the whole thing for them and asking me why it won't work when they made changes to app.js when I told them not to in this tutorial.

Anyhow, instead I have made a Node.JS module that you can install using npm and it can be found here: https://github.com/cainy393/DogeChat-Bot.
The documentation should be enough for you to get something going. If you need actual help and are not an inexperienced coder trying to make a bot without any knowledge of programming then feel free to contact me with your questions here.

Please note when making a bot for DogeChat:
  • A bot account MUST have a username ending in bot.
  • Bot accounts must be registered as bots - contact a moderator on DogeChat to arrange this.
  • A bot must not make more than 2 sequential unprompted messages.
57  Other / Beginners & Help / I'm making a node.js chat bot tutorial for coinchat on: August 29, 2013, 06:55:00 PM
I want to post a tutorial for making a chat bot in node.js and using socket.io-client for the website coinchat.org but i cant post yet. So here goes. While I'm at it, would anyone be interested in such a post? I know several people have asked me on the site itself for information on it but i dont know how many people will actually read this tutorial... Anyway I hope you like it when, in 4 hours, I am able to post it in the correct place :p
