41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: VectorDash - Rent GPUs to AI researchers. $7.68 per 1080ti per day on: July 07, 2018, 04:34:16 AM
Hey hey, Octominer here. We manufacture and sell specialised mining hardware for crypto miners.

We are currently working on developing our NEXT GEN riser free motherboard that will be more focused on AI and Rendering tasks also and not just mining for mining.   Shocked Cool

I would love to hear some feedback from you guys on which kind of motherboard would you think would be perfect for Vectordash or AI/Rendering rigs? Currently we are considering making a riser free motherboard with X16 slots based on either AMD Threadripper X399 platform or AMD EPYC server CPU platform. Advantage of the threadripper is that it is cheaper and the CPU clock speeds are much higher. Advantage of the AMD EPYC is that it has 128 PCIe lanes compare to the threadrippers 64 PCIe lanes and more cores. Which makes it possible to run 7x GPUs at full 16x speed on the EPYC motherboard, while the threadripper motherboard can support a maximum of 3x GPU running at 16x full speed or 7x GPUs running at 8x speed.

I would love to hear some real life feedback on the topic of 16x vs 8x PCIe speed when it comes to rendering and AI tasks. From what I understand for OTOYs OctaneRender 8x speed is optimal and there is only a 1-2% difference in performance when comparing 8x to 16x PCIe speed. Does anybody know how is the 8x vs 16x PCIe performance difference when it comes to AI tasks and Vectordash?

Are there any official distributors of Octominer boards somewhere in EU or China is only option available?
Also will there be any other options to pay the goods except with crypto?

We are currently in negotiations with a few businesses for European distribution. We will update everybody once it's running!
Stay tuned Smiley

Thanks, will there be also an option to buy with fiat payment options trough this new distribution channels?
Few days ago i have spoke with someone from your team, they said that u don't even accept paypal anymore due to some problems. Undecided

We have FIAT option right now also. We accept Wire Transfer for bulk orders if you are interested.

Have you tried a pci-e based fpga card yet? You have confirmed the slots can supply 75w but what speed is your usb slots? These cards need usb apparently, im willing to sacrifice 1 usb for no mouse/keyboard.

Hey!

We are currently still waiting to get our sample of the XILINX FPGA card.
I will post updates once we have tested it.

any plans to start accepting credit card payments again?

We are working on solutions at the moment, probably at the end of the summer we will be accepting credit cards again.  Smiley

Im having trouble with my miner. Been mining about 3 weeks now. I have 4 1080 tis on the board and it has already burned up a surge protector (causing the breaker to trip) and now I have it on a different circuit. Its making the 6ft extension cord at the wall hot. The most Im seeing it pull is 900 watts with watt meter. I have 15 amp circuits with nothing else but a overhead led bulb on it. The 2200 watt PSU does not say its rated for 110 (says 176-264v)  but Octominer rep told me it was fine to use. I have another non-octominer miner I built months before that runs the same amount of watts and does not get my plugs hot. Im worried about it burning my house down.  My guess is its the PSU. Anybody? TY

Hey!
Could be that the PSU you got was damaged during shipping and for some reason is working unstable.
Please email the problem description to our email and also include a picture of the PSU and your mining rig setup.

so i read it somewhere that one of your customer have 8 vega 64 gpu installed on this board?   i would like to know how because it doesn't seem like my board likes anything past 4 (tried 5 and it freezes).

Sounds like a software issue.
Please boot up with HIVE OS on USB stick and see if it detects 8 of the Vega GPU.

Please email us at info@octominer.com and our tech support team will get back to you on how to get 8 GPU working.
Thanks.

i'm using windows on it because of the xmr software for vega (higher hashrate).   but 3 seems like a limit on windows

We have some clients running 8x Vegas on our systems. VEGAs are very picky GPUs in general and there might be a need to change some settings in BIOS.
Please email us for support.
Thank you.

hey Octo, can you find out the maximum power rating per pci-e slot on the Octo board with all auxiliary power connections being used? Can they handle 75w?

Hey!

Yes, 75W is the maximum power rating per PCI-e slot.

Just would like to post feedback that some people in our local crypto-mining scene have started receiving their Octominers and they are very happy with it. The build quality is good and setup was easy and hassle-free as advertised. I'm thinking of getting one myself and building a "show-off" rig.

Congratulations and more power to Octominer!

Thanks for the support! Happy to hear that everybody is satisfied with their Octominer rigs. Smiley
Send me a PM and I can set you up as an affiliate if you are interested.

Has anyone got linux running on this and how does it do? Any one running a pci-e fpga off this motherboard?

All Linux based mining OSs run perfect with the Octominer motherboard.
We will try running some Xiling FPGA cards on them next week. I will post the results here.

Any idea when you will get more cases in? I'd though when I ordered (on the first) it said back ordered till the 10th but don't see that anymore.

Same if I ordered a case and mobo do you ship separately or wait for all parts (ie the cases) to be instock?

Thanks!

Hey!
The cases will be in stock again later this month or a bit sooner. Smiley
We can ship your order partially, just leave a note at the checkout.

Please email us your order id to info@octominer.com and we will update you on the status of your order delivery time.

Are there header pins on the B8Plus that allow it to be powered up/down with a push button.  My other miner (MSI mobo) has the pins but I don't know if the B8Plus does or not.

Yes, the Octominer motherboard has header pins for buttons and LED's. I added the link to our youtube setup guide where you can see how to connect them.

8GB is recommended when running VEGAs since you have to use Windows.  Smiley

With latest HiveOS you can use Vega cards. Not flexible as Windows for OC but its works. And users are happy.

That's great with Hive that it supports Vegas now. Have you already tried using them in Hive and do they support all the AMD miners there?

Hello,

Do you have any photos of Octominer populated with Vegas? Can I go with 4GB ram to use 8 Vegas? I plan to get some octos to reduce the size of my rigs and get rid of risers, as well to use oly server type PSU. All my cards are Vegas 56 and 64. Is there anything I should consider before shelling the money on Octominer motherboards?

If  you have some photos of Vega Octominer rigs, please, can you post here? Smiley Thanks!

Hey!
I don't have any 8X vega rig photo to show you now, but we have clients who run 8x VEGA setups on our motherboards and they work. We have a single VEGA that we have used for testing to confirm it works.

Can anyone help me to convert my Octominer so I can use Oculus rift. I’ve never had virtual reality system and have a few question to multipurpose my mining rig.
Is it better if I use all 8 gpu at same time or can I only use 1?
I want to do the high fidelity Rust virtual reality dance party so it tracks my movement with many sensors so is cpu and 8gb ram good enough?

Version 2 Octominer Motherboard:
How about having it optimized as a virtual reality gaming and image rendering workstation so you can utilize the gpu for different purpose?

i doubt boards like these riserless miner style mobos (octominer/onda boards with 8 full size slots) will ever be very good at VR as the cards are being run with only 1 PCIe lane per card. VR has more traditional gaming type requirements, you would want at least eight PCIe lanes (PCIe x8 or x16) per card to load textures and such. textures loading at a single PCIe lane speed will be too slow.

might be possible to change some slots to use more lanes but that might disable other slots or devices (msata/sata ports maybe)

I also doubt that they will continue manufacturing these boards when GPU mining is almost about to exit. I feel for the company behind this and i can imagine that they've invested a lot of capital into developing these boards.

Hopefully they've been able to recoup at least their initial investment on these octominer boards. It is actually a good product.

GPU mining is still going strong. We are working with multiple big mining farms in Australia, Canada, USA and parts of Europe who are buying around 10 000GPUs every 4-6 months.  Smiley.

This board is awesome. After 15 days of working 8x RX550 mining monero Today I tried 12 GPU with port multiplier. I use 2 different kind port multipliers. Actually I think I can use other 2 free slots on multiplier for 14 GPU but I dont have free GPU at the moment. There is an order in a chaos if you can see it. Tongue Just joking. Its a test bed. Not final form. Also I wont run 12 gpu over 1 day. I will order more octominer board. I install HiveOS and Windows dual boot on MSATA SSD for future troubleshooting or bios mod. But its not good performance on Windows due CPU. I miss change to buy board with Pentium CPU. I hope you will sell it again.
But to be honest I think I will try non branded one for just a curiosity.

Glad to hear that you are happy with our motherboard.
The 12 GPU port multiplier rig looks pretty cool but kind of defeats the point of having a stable and riser free motherboard.  Grin
Whats the cost of a port multiplier like that?
