41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Stumped on Mining, a newbie on: February 24, 2014, 02:10:07 AM
Hi!  I love this forum by the way, been reading for months.  I have 2 Radeon R0 270X cards and a 600 watt Corsair CX600 ATX power supply.  What else do I need to mine Litecoin?  I want to stay as simple as possible.  I already understand how mining works, I have a wallet and mining pool already set up, but I just need to know:  can I hook up these 2 Radeon graphics cards in a computer I have here at home?  If not, why not?  I don't want to buy a motherboard, etc., unless I have to.   If I do have to, what are the minimums I would need to get started?

I really appreciate any help/input!  You guys are fantastic!
42  Bitcoin / Mining support / Butterfly miners and power outage on: February 21, 2014, 05:22:02 PM
Last night my power went out about 3-4 hours.  The 2 Butterfly Labs miners I have (Jalapenos) now are not recognized by BFGminer when I rebooted.

Is there another software besides BFGminer that I could use that is easy to install on Fedora preferably.   Has anyone else had experience with power outages?   The miners work fine when plugged in as normal.  Maybe I should try a different mining software, I've been using BFGminer for months now.    Thanks!

I meant LTC, sorry.    And thanks for the info!

I've got 2 Jalapenos, and looking to get a Radeon 7950.   But, I don't want to use a rig that is too costly with the electricity or too much for a residential setup.  What would be the best option for me, just to use the one Radeon 7950?  I'm not sure how many more I could add.

I get those same errors on Bitminer with 2 Jalapenos going.  I don't know why.  I do get some mining done, but I haven't fooled with BitMinter much.  Do you like BitMinter?

Speaking of that, try PasswordSafe.  I got it from Bruce Schneier's site, and I like that program too.

You know I thought the same thing, I didn't think I'd really be able to memorize long chains like that, but I found it to be pretty easy.  Yeah I am liking Armory a lot, it hasn't finished installing but it looks like I can import wallets into it.  There are over 500 people with more than 1 million in BTC so I'm sure they have taken precautions to protect their money.  In fact, there may be info on that on google if you searched hard enough.  I find so much every day about BTC I get overwhelmed!  Good luck!
48  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Has anyone tried cashing out from MT gox recently (CAD/USD) on: December 16, 2013, 07:06:37 AM
I just put a little BTC in my Mt Gox the other day and then later got some other alt-coin with that and it worked just fine.  I wouldn't know about withdrawing in USD, I've never done that there.  I like Coinbase for general purposes.

Has anyone here used Armory for a wallet?  I am using it now and it really seems rock solid and I feel very safe with it.  You can import wallets into it, and I have it on the desktop (takes a while to download and requires bitcoind & bitcoin-qt).    About passwords, you can start off with a really hard password that you write down, random characters, numbers, and make it at least 15 characters long.  After a few weeks, you will memorize that crazy random number, I've done it many times.  After you get used to the memorization, you can add additional characters and before you know it, you can type out a very long, for example 20 or 25-long character random password in a few seconds, and the longer random passwords are more secure.  At least it's a step in the right direction, I know it's not for everybody.

You know while we're on this subject, and this may need to be moved to another area of the forum, but if for example I have Ubuntu and installed a server, doesn't that open me up to more risk?  Can't I just open up a GUI for the firewall and watch my ports?  What is the safest way to monitor traffic on your own network on Linux?  Just curious what others do.

I think the TREZOR device will be a great security measure.  I can't wait to get one when they are available to order.

From what I've read online, the best thing to do is to print an offline paper wallet, and store it away physically in a safe place, encrypt the wallet, save the wallet.dat file to a backup USB drive or offline drive, and that's all I know!
53  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Strange Event in Ubuntu on: December 12, 2013, 10:31:17 PM
Hi, sorry it took me a while to get back, I had major complications with my operating systems.  What you said above is indeed exactly what happened -- I got the "apt-get" command not found."   I tried to use WGET to download Aptitude but it didn't work.  I never did get it fixed.  I'm not sure if I maybe uninstalled a vital program via Synaptic and just didn't realize I check-marked it, it could be that, but I've never had that happen before.  I am now using Xubuntu and MultiBit is fantastic on here, it works great.  I also have Electrum on Windows but I haven't used it yet.  I have run the blockchain download on other computers, on Windows 7 and on Linux Mint with no problems.    By the way, closing Bitcoin-qt did not help because once your wallet is encrypted, on Ubuntu 12 anyway, you lose the tray icon and the Menu options as well, it's a bug I found on google.  I'm thinking it has to do with qt.  What I was looking for is the ideal Linux distro to use with Bitcoin.  It looks so far like Xubuntu is great.  Thanks for your help!
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Strange Event in Ubuntu on: December 12, 2013, 01:09:45 AM
I installed bitcoin-qt and some weird things happened.  Should I not post this here at all?  I went to AskUbuntu, but I didn't get any help.  The problem is, when the blockchain started downloading a while, I then could not update my system and the "apt" function of my operating system disappeared.  I've used Ubuntu since 2006, and I've never seen that happen.  Does it have something to do with bitcoin-qt?  Or did I bonk my machine?

Hi!  I'm wondering what is the best CPU miner to use for mining Zetacoin?  I'm on a Windows 7 machine with 2 threads, would love to get started mining!

Okay thanks, I'll do that.  In fact, I think I tried it out last night but it didn't work for some reason.  I'll retry.

I am a newbie.  I really like the alternate coins like Feathercoin, Peercoin, etc., and of course I like Bitcoin as well.  I think I understand the basics of how it works though it gets complicated.  I'm interested in CPU mining for some alternate coins like Litecoin or something else like Peercoin, those sound very exciting to me.  What is a good miner for CPU for Windows or Linux?
