Here's my tip and I sincerely mean this...

Don't ask for investment advice on bitcointalk.

Maybe we can hire dev Jean-Luc from NXT; since they are running out of funds soon anyway.

He is one of the best devs in the cryptoshpere.

Wouldn't that be a moment. NEM was conceived as a fair-distribution alternative to Nxt. Hiring the chief dev of Nxt...wow.

Hiring him is wishful. Whether he wants to is another thing altogether. Most people will have emotional attachments.

I'd bet anything he wouldn't do that. Especially not now when they are going to make that huge shift to "NXT 2.0".

A lot of people? What were the arguments against a new economy?

"New Economy" is an older term from the 90s/2000s and associated with early internet companies and the dot-com bubble, and "Movement" has just too much of a idiological connotation. NEM started very idiological, almost cult like, which almost turned me off as well, but I saw the technological potential. You just don't get mass acceptance that way.

Yeah, many people have recognized this as an issue already. Thing is, NEM does have some name recognition by now. So I'm okay with the idea to just leave NEM but not as an acronym. The letters don't have to stand for anything. Just nem.
45  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: April 23, 2016, 07:59:17 AM

Remember, one year ago, on 22 April 2015 I re-posted a long post about the marshmallow experiment and NEM.

In essence, I created a very simplistic though somewhat useful graph which looked like this:

                                                                              The Altcoin Landscape

Cheap Scams          Elaborate Scams             Clones                Low Innovation         Deep Innovation
                                      I--------------------I--------------------I--------------------I--------------------I

       Approx. Time:        1 Day                      1 Week                  1 Month               3 - 6 Months                1 Year

      Approx. Difficulty:      1/10                       2/10                       4/10                       6/10                       10/10

Approx. Value Created:    1 btc                      10 btc                     50 btc                    100 btc                    10000 btc

Now, one year later I'm glad to see it still standing. Although I see things quite different now, one thing is clear: NEM has an approximate market cap of 31788 btc.

This project has come a long way since its inception. Glad to see it moving forward.

well, look what the cat dragged in.

Hi !

I have installed lubuntu; I could easily start nis.sh but have troubles with starting the servant.sh for becoming a supernode;

This is what I did;

fatih87sk@37-9-134-5:~$ cd Desktop/servant
fatih87sk@37-9-134-5:~/Desktop/servant$ ./nix.startservant.sh
bash: ./nix.startservant.sh: No such file or directory

Did you try "sh startservant.sh"?

Luckily I work at an IT company so I brought my laptop at work.
A Unix manager fixed the rights of the startservant.sh and then I could start it.

yeah, you gotta make it executable first, allthough i think "sh startservant.sh" works without that.
chmod +x  Wink

You're trying to harvest with an account that isn't known to the network probably because you haven't snyced yet.

Turn autoharvest off again.
Restart NIS and let it sync.
Then turn autoharvest on again and restart NIS.

thinking of setting up a Supernode. Does anyone know how much xem is rewarded in 24hrs on average.

depends on the number of supernodes and if the daily amount stays as planed.
Afaik the plan was 70k daily split among all active supernodes.

3 Questions I hope someone can answer Smiley

Is there anything special about the WAVES' AE or is it basically the same as in NXT ? (NXTs AE works so nothing wrong with that, just trying to get clarification here)

I understand that the big thing about WAVES are supposed to be national currency tokens on the AE right ? What is the plan for getting this bootstraped ? Any institutions in line for doing that ? Maybe the team itself will get a license ?

Lastly, how does anonymity go together with KYC/AML ? Seems contradictory but the "whitepaper" isn't very clear on where privacy features actualy come into play and what they look like so that's why I'm asking Smiley (to be frank the whitepaper looks more like a marketing brochure to me. No offense).

Good luck with the ICO !

Waves will be a platform with emphasis on custom token creation, transfer and decentralized trading, with deep fiat integration and focus on community-backed projects. Main differences are asset-asset trading and fiat tokens at launch.

Yes we are planning going after the financial license if ICO funds is enough. Still we will be working with the payment providers that Sasha is working atm through coinomat.com

For using fiat on the platform you will need to do KYC. For using crypto, no.

For now you can get familiar with the Scorex framework that Waves is being built on. Waves tech papers will be showing up during the ICO.

Is there a proper whitepaper yet ?
OP states "read the whitepaper" but there don't seem to be any actual links to it.

question guys. does the amount of XEM you have in your wallet have any effect on the amount you will be able to harvest? like if you have more XEM, do you get more harvested proportional to what you already hold? someone please educate me. thanks.

Yes it does. It is one factor - a big one - when calculating the importance of an account.
54  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: April 06, 2016, 05:25:36 PM
Why even bother cooperating with Microsoft?
-visibility-

People tend to be shortsighted, all they see is short term profit. Not long term benefits.

We already won, the coin is already successful. Now just wait for mass adoption.

Yeah no....you want mass adoption ? Go out and push NEM. Show people what NEM can do and see if they'll build on it. It aint going to happen if everoyne is waiting.

There's still time to vote

I can't get remote harvesting working for a few months now. Every time I boot NIS it stops after a few minutes. If I remove "nis.shouldAutoHarvestOnBoot = false" from the config my NIS will sync, but then when I try and start local harvesting on my remote node it throws an error
"ERROR 306 NIS: UNEXPECTED ERROR"

I was hoping the new version would fix this problem but it hasn't. I did a full uninstall of the old version before installing too. Does the account I use to boot my remote node need to have a positive NEM balance? It always worked until Dec 2015 with a zero balance, but did something change? Help!!

"local harvesting on my remote node"

it shouldnt allow you to start local harvesting when connected to a remote nis

the account you use to boot can been negative and should be, unless you boot it with a delegated harvesting key. for the health of the network its better to boot with a harvesting key(for account security), of which the originating account should have a positive balance.

you need a balance of at least 10k (vested) xem to harvest.

activate delegated harvesting with the account that has funds, then go to your nis config and set auto-boot on and use the delegated accounts private key as the boot key. the delegated account cannot be used to move funds so the coins cannot be stolen even if your remote nis is compromised and delegated key stolen.

in relation to harvestig with a zero balance, that should be impossible.

Thanks for the reply kod! What I did was use my laptop  to delegate my main account for harvesting on my VPS. I did that last year and have rarely used my laptop NEM since. On my VPS i used 'nis.shouldAutoHarvestOnBoot = true' and setup a NEM account with zero balance in the config file to use with 'nis.bootKey =xxxxxxxxxx'. This setup was working great for months and I harvested many blocks and reboots of the VPS caused no problem as NIS would start from a shortcut in startup folder

But then in Dec 2015 the NIS on my VPS just kept stopping. I tried re-installing and deleting the cache files (smaragda's tip) but nothing worksed, NIS always stops after a few minutes. Then I noticed that if I change 'nis.shouldAutoHarvestOnBoot' to false the NIS on my VPS will sync, but when I login with my account on the VPS (i.e. the account I use with 'nis.bootKey =xxxxxxxxxx' in the config) and try and start harvesting on the VPS manually by clicking the harvesting button in the GUI I get the error "ERROR 306 NIS: UNEXPECTED ERROR".

I gave up and decided to wait for a new version, but I tried yesterday and NEM Beta 0.6.74 is doing the exact same behavior.

any love for kenny on this one?

You're gonna need to provide logs. Also head over to forum.nem.io and look at the Request for help category. You'll find some more things to try there.
58  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: April 02, 2016, 11:09:28 AM

Congrats on keeping this project alive, guys.

I have a web application that I wish to poll the balance of a NEM address.  Usually you can do this via an API somewhere, but the blockexplorer's don't have an API available that I have seen. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to easily do this?

You can do this via the API:
http://bob.nem.ninja/docs/#requesting-the-account-data

This is exactly what I want to do,but I do not wish to maintain a NEM wallet/node. I was hoping for a place that had this sort of thing running that is publicly available?

http://www.nodeexplorer.com/

theres a list of nodes on that page with public IP's. you should be able to query those nodes without problem. if you need to access information that you need the private key for, you might have to run ncc locally, connect to a remote nis and query the blockchain via Ncc. not 100% on the details but i think thats right

I tried and get this... {"timeStamp":32002963,"error":"Bad Request","message":"address must be valid","status":400}

http://127.0.0.1:7890/account/get?address=TALICELCD3XPH4FFI5STGGNSNSWPOTG5E4DS2TOS

The above doesn't work and I tried pulling accounts out of the explorer.  THe ones starting with an N and a few dashes.  I tried removing the dash. What would be a valid address for the above API call to work?

You're using a testnet address (starting with "T") and your node is prob on the mainnet.

Can I set up a local node when I buy a Raspberry Pi?

Depends on the exact model but i think some people are running nodes on a Pi yes.

I Hope my Pine64 can do it!

The PLUS is prob worth a shot. The BASIC i think would have a hard time with only 512MB memory.
