besides, it depends on what the "project" is. is it a business like an exchange,... (since you mentioned paying a lot of money for it) or is it just an open source cryptocurrency (in which case paying money doesn't make any sense!).
if it is a business then attacking it, exploiting the flaws is dishonest and it may even be pursued legally.
but if it is a cryptocurrency then most of the "attacks" that i see are usually using the features of the coin because it was poorly designed and leads to catastrophe. in any case attacking it won't help with any kind of "overtaking"!

Are they selling IOUs essentially? Why are you blaming the exchange right away if they may have fallen victim to a fork of your chain? Did they disable the wallet? Honestly any 51% attack is on YOU and YOUR NETWORK. Exchanges have no liability when it comes to policing your coin and preventing attacks. They do however have a responsibility to close the markets if there's trouble with your network. why they didn't in idax?? they know that if they do that in idax, they will be offline because idax monitoring his exchange and they don't let to do that this is on us but southxchange might have stop it. |

as for the 51% attack, it happens to all the coins with low hashrate and enough incentive to perform the attack. if the exchange owners are not total idiots they simply put certain watchers to detect these types of attack which are easy to do too and suspend operations immediately. not to mention that they normally require high number of confirmation for these coins that are susceptible.

I think the problem of a new project's main problem ia all about marketing. Because all we know that this is the most important factor in starting a new project and it is the way how we encourage investor and participant to join in our new campaign. So it is better if you will have plan and well organized marketing plan before launching project.
