41  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is not real money. on: October 05, 2012, 09:02:46 PM
This is how I define "currency" - if someone is willing to take whatever I have in hand or other formats for the good / services that someone provides, that's currency. In that terms, BTC is not used anywhere, or at least used safely; my conclusion is BTC is not a currency yet.

43  Economy / Speculation / Re: [POLL] How low will we go? on: October 05, 2012, 08:28:56 PM
Maybe I miss something; what's going on this weekend that will cause the price to drop? BFL launch?
44  Economy / Speculation / Re: I had a dream where bitcoin price dropped to 4 usd! on: October 05, 2012, 08:27:55 PM
If you are going to dream, why not dream btc will drop to USD0.01 or something less? Why USD4.00??

2011 Total World Wealth according to a report is 231 trillion (231,000,000,000,000).
231,000,000,000,000 / 21,000,000 btc = USD11 million / btc.

I'm a freaking millionaire! I'm going to go tell my boss to s*** it.

46  Economy / Goods / Goods for BTC on: October 01, 2012, 09:37:37 PM
Was browsing coinpost.com; planning to buy something from there. But how do I know if it's legit? I mean, btc as we know it, once sent; it's gone. There's no retrieval. What happens if the seller did not send me the goods?

Has anyone had any experience buying from that website (coinpost.com)?? Or for that matter, bitmit.net??

Thanks!
47  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Ebook publisher on: September 18, 2012, 07:46:46 PM
are these ebooks / music legally distributed at coindl.com? I mean will this violate any copyright laws? How is this different from downloading ebooks / musics, etc from say, torrent?
48  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BitcoinCard - Are you buying one? on: September 13, 2012, 07:08:44 PM
size of credit card; texting, sending money, tracks you wherever you are, how long you take a dump - Sounds like the beginning of implantation of a chip inside you. Therefore, no thanks! I'll hold on to my privacy and freedom for as long as I can. I don't need corporations to know where I am or my buying habits. So, Facebook, Facedeals, Mycelium or whatever ... stay out of my life!!!

No offense or anything; but, why am I reminded of "I am writing on behalf of Sir XYZ. He's dead and now he's looking for someone in the US to transfer his fortune to."  Huh
50  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can bitcoins break $5,000 in 20 years? on: August 31, 2012, 03:40:04 PM
Not trying to be Johnny RainCloud but with so little, virtually not much adoption of btc; what makes you think it'll go anywhere near $100; let alone $5000? Just wondering ... what is the basis of this speculation?

Is this site some sort of scam? I get the following error:

Quote
Your IP has been blocked because of suspicious activity. If you believe you've gotten this message due to an error, contact bitcrate@flexcoin.com with your IP address and we'll look into it. Smiley

First of all why is he monitoring people's IP addr?
2ndly, why is my IP being blocked?

54  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to take advantage of cheap/free electricity? on: August 20, 2012, 06:30:13 PM
free electricity or not; it's probably not worth "investing" in video cards now; at least until we're sure BFL is not going to work out. BFL is expected to hit the miners in late October/November 2012. If it in fact works like it claimed, gpu mining is not going to get anything - probably micro bit cents / day.
55  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Phoenix 2 Miner v2.0.0 on: August 18, 2012, 03:19:29 PM
how exactly do I configure this? Using ubuntu 10.10 (or was it 10.04 - can't remember) LTS; download the source, extract it to my directory. Navigate to the folder with ./phoenix.py with terminal. Issue command ./phoenix.py -u .... like my previous version 1.75. Came back with an error saying missing -u

thks!

The blockchain.info website - isn't that like an online wallet? I'm supposed to create an account with them and transfer my btc there? Weren't there a case where an online wallet website was hacked and users of that website were refunded pennies on the dollar?
Edit: And recently Bitonica.com?

However, the paper wallet idea intrigues me. I did some reading about paper wallet - on https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Paper_wallet and https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet.

My understanding is I can go to sites like bitaddress.org to generate addresses, print it out (the address and private keys) and send my bitcoins there. I don't have to actually have that address anywhere in the bitcoin client.

I have a couple of questions though, hopefully not dumb questions.
1) I'm guessing all the addresses generated by bitaddress.org is unique?
2) How do I add the address and the private keys to the bitcoin client for when I actually need to get the blocks up-to-date for when I need to use my bitcoin?

Thanks.

58  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How much does performance drop by when using more than 1 graphics card? on: July 25, 2012, 02:47:09 PM
It doesn't ... I have 3 cards in 1 machine - added over time. It generates more heat; but, I haven't seen any drop in performance.

But, since you are a newbie, I hope you are not buying those cards for mining purposes. I don't know where the product is at (haven't been following it), but, there's suppose to be a product out that'll blow GPU mining off. Search BFL on this forum ... or go to  http://www.butterflylabs.com/products/
59  Other / Beginners & Help / Need comments on wallet security on: July 25, 2012, 02:42:10 PM
This is my plan ... please comment / suggest on the security of it.

I plan to create a "savings" account.
Plan is:
1) Encrypt the whole usb drive
2) Download a btc client to a usb drive, run that client to generate addresses.
3) Redirect the .bitcoin folder to the usb drive as well (so client, wallet, blocks, etc) will be in the same usb drive
4) Send some / all my btc to one of the address.

My question then is
1) future 'savings' - should it go to the same address or a different address generated in the usb drive client?
2) do I have to get the usb drive client to catch up on the blocks?
3) do I have to (from time to time) plug the usb drive in to update the block count?

If I have to update the block count, then
1) is there a way to update it fast?
I recently did a clean upgrade of my Ubuntu LTS and it has been 3 days (of about 6 hours / day); I haven't even catch up, currently at 98%.

Welcome any comments / suggestions.

Thanks!
60  Other / Beginners & Help / Will it happen? on: July 19, 2012, 09:49:20 PM
The recent megaupload site shut down made me wonder ... will it happen to bitcoin? All these mining sites; all the government has to do is cut off the head of the snake (the most popular mining sites), and the rest of the sites will be too afraid to continue. If and when that happens, will bitcoin die?

Just curious as to what are some of your thoughts ...
