What's this? The NYT admits positives from Legalization?

Quote
Legal marijuana is finally doing what the drug war couldn’t

Legal marijuana may be doing at least one thing that a decades-long drug war couldn't: taking a bite out of Mexican drug cartels' profits.

The latest data from the U.S. Border Patrol shows that last year, marijuana seizures along the southwest border tumbled to their lowest level in at least a decade. Agents snagged roughly 1.5 million pounds of marijuana at the border, down from a peak of nearly 4 million pounds in 2009.

Now, if they'd just take the logical next step and call on The One to exercise executive power to benefit society by removing cannabis from Schedule I...

any update ?

Yes rayaodi, there is Smiley

The fast sync-patched Android wallet should be proliferating across Google Play Store at present, although it may be Monday before the caches clear and the store listing declares it compatible with your device.

It will not overwrite existing wallets so existing users can install safely but, having said that it is always good practice to back up your wallet keys to a safe location. Please do so before installing CannabisCoin "fast-sync".

Please note that this is not the pending wallet upgrade, merely a fix for slow initial sync, an improvement in peer location and a fix for the broken exchange function.

Initial synchronization is best done in WiFi, depending on hardware and network access the patched wallet should sync in 1-5 minutes. On first opening each time the wallet should state that it is unable to load exchange data while it seeks current information on bitcoin's exchange rate to various fiat currencies, then the current bid price on Bittrex and then converts that to CannabisCoin fiat exchange values. Again depending on hardware and network access that could take seconds to a minute or two.

Don't forget to transfer any existing balance (or restore your old wallet keys to the patched version) before uninstalling the unpatched wallet. Take care when uninstalling that you remove the correct app as there is no difference in the icon between the patched and unpatched versions.

Wishing everyone the very best of weekends, keep sharing those smiles Cheesy

Cheers from the land down-under.

Thanks for your 2˘ pinchecobadre, it's worth at least $1.02˘ to me Wink

With regard to the wallet updates, speed in initial block chain synchronization is a major factor being addressed for both mobile and desktop wallets. Additionally interaction with paper wallets is to be streamlined and made more user friendly. We will not incorporate core 0.12 however because it has code to revert transactions which we believe opens the possibility for future fraudulent transaction exploits. No poc code exists for this yet as far as we know but CannabisCoin has no need for the facility, so why take the risk?

On matters of more interest to the general community much of the effort behind the scenes is a laborious, time consuming and non-photogenic slog through regulation, proposal, clarification and red tape. Data on landrace tests of kWh of electricity and gallons of water per gram of dried flower and the flowers' constituents contain partners' commercial in-confidence information and couldn't be released even if ∆9 wanted to open his own books. I suppose I could ask for pictures to be posted of the clones the guys are busily cutting at present. I am reluctant to do so because pictures have undesirable side-effects too, one of which is to goad much increased federal and state scrutiny with commensurate increase in the aforementioned laborious, time consuming and non-photogenic slog through regulation, proposal, clarification and red tape.

Thank you again for your feedback.

What happened to the cann cann/smidgen/delta etc. contest. was there a winner decided?

No one contacted me showing any interest in holding one. From memory you suggested "smidgen" but no one backed your proposal. ciscoPT offered "crystals" but no one backed that either. Since that was the sum total of responses when I asked if the community wanted a competition no competition was ever set up.

There is historical precedent for "nanocoin", at least in the java implementation of bitcoin and its derivatives.

From bitcoin/core/utils.java:
Quote
   /**
     * How many "nanocoins" there are in a Bitcoin.
     * <p/>
     * A nanocoin is the smallest unit that can be transferred using Bitcoin.
     * The term nanocoin is very misleading, though, because there are only 100 million
     * of them in a coin (whereas one would expect 1 billion.
     */

At present it looks like that could be the nomenclature used even though it is not technically correct (probably why bitcoin adopted "satoshis"). "MicroCent" could work, I suppose, given that cents and micros are already defined in the code.

It is common to receive demands for action and results but it is dreadfully difficult to get reasoned feedback from the community. This is terribly disappointing, to say the least.

Security Alert

If you are a Linux Mint user or are contemplating installing/using Mint then this applies to you:

Quote
Linux Mint Backdoor Puts [Cryptocurrency Miners/Users] at Risk

February 21, 2016 – The website of the second most popular Linux distribution, Linux Mint, has been hacked to point users to an altered installation image with a backdoor and malicious software pre-loaded. Their primary site and Forums are down at the moment as well, due to repeated intrusions by these hackers. The distro is popular among the Cryptocurrency mining community as a platform for running GPU mining software packages, and this security breach could affect users trying to upgrade their operating systems on these computers, giving the hackers access to their personal information and possibly their Cryptocurrency Wallets.

Random question, but is there anyway to use the current bootstrap.dat file to speed up syncing in the android wallet? I am rooted and able to view the data folder for the app, however inside all i have found is a file called 'blockchain'. Would I be correct in assuming that deleting this file and adding the bootstrap.dat (or possibly renaming it to blockchain) would resync with faster speeds?
SO, to answer my own question...... no you cannot use the bootstrap.dat file with the android wallet, or at least not in the folder i thought (/DATA/DATA/com.cannabiscoin.wallet/APP_BLOCKSTORE)

Latenite, can you see the checkpoints file? It's in the "assets" directory along with the help files but I doubt that it's accessible under any circumstance.

If you can then I can supply you a new one which will make catching up a trivial task. Otherwise wait for a refresh to be released shortly - just about to look at the exchange functions in the next couple of days.

BTW, the Android wallet is SPV and not full node so no, there is nowhere to put the bootstrap.dat file because it would never be read.

I wil search for this 'assets' directory Smiley who knows.... maybe I'll find it, either way its a new project for the night Cool

edit
Found the assets folder with the checkpoints file Smiley Cheesy ( a lil help from apk editor, and fx file browser Wink ) any chance you could pm me a link to the new checkpoints file?? i can beta test lol
/edit

Sent but I doubt the system will allow a brute-forced file alteration (actually I fervently hope not). The file should abort loading when it no longer matches the signature. No harm in trying though Smiley

The FBI is attempting to stretch the All Writs Act of 1789 to force companies to breach encryption

U.S citizens interested in bitcoin and cryptocurrencies particularly might want to have a word with their congressman and senator. Remember this is an election year and a good time to remind politicians, politely, they represent you and your wishes. Crippled encryption applies to your private communications and data storage too so it is something to which everyone should give intense scrutiny.

In the immortal words of Benjamin Franklin:

Quote
“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Think hard about this heinous attempt to invade your and everyone's privacy. Surely this is a case for just saying "NO!".

See a current article in the NYTimes: Tim Cook Opposes Order for Apple to Unlock iPhone, Setting Up Showdown.

Last Call on requests for wallet features/fixes in imminent round of updates

There haven't been a lot of responses so far so that means most people are basically happy with the wallets as they are or what?

I'll be closing the book on requests/suggestions for this round midnight (GMT) Friday, February 19th so if you have a need/want for wallet feature addition/change you need to bring it to my attention this week.

If you do not wish to post publicly then you can message me on this forum or email here

Was there any reason for the price spike today? Seems odd, there's been very little growth over the past while but today it spiked 35% or more.

Looks like someone has decided to take a sizable position in CannabisCoin doesn't it.

Before anyone asks, no, I don't have any information to release at this time.

@everyone

Does anyone have any opinions on the possible effects of AMD launching GPUOpen? For those who haven't yet heard about it there's an article on Bitcoinist today.

Potential sudden increases in hashing power/rates naturally figure in discussions on any possible block subsidy rate changes.

Thoughts?

Does burning this coin means burning the actual Marijuana? If so, this is the only coin that can take us to the high while we burn it unlike other alt coins Smiley

why burning?

I think he means spending, rather like the old saying of coins "burning a hole in someone's pocket" to imply compulsive spending.

420 is coming up soon. Any plans from D9 to run another special day where people can get CANNdy for their CANN in Arizona?
Could be a really good timing to give back life to this coin..really hoping that!!!

I don't have any direct information on such plans. What I do have is a link to this news report in the Arizona Daily Star of Arizona's year on year doubling of medical cannabis consumption, from 9 tons in 2014 to 19 tons last year.

Quote

19 tons of medical marijuana consumed in Arizona last year

PHOENIX — Arizona’s nearly 88,000 medical marijuana patients smoke, ate or otherwise consumed more than 19 tons of the drug last year.

And if the average price for marijuana from state-regulated dispensaries is $300 an ounce, it means medical users spent more than $184 million last year acquiring the drug legally.

Thank you pineapples and groggin for your welcome suggestions.

Upgrading the core code is the main reason for the impending upgrade round. While robust the current wallets are desperately slow for new users.

hi guys amazing work.

i wonder if you accept " medical marijuana dispensories " outside US? Lets say in amsterdam can i spend my CANN? What will local merchants benefit?

Thx keep up the good work

p.s.Cristals smaller devision of Cann Smiley imo

Acceptance of CannabisCoin is a matter for individual dispensaries wherever they are located and the Yes We CANN movement is not bound by national borders. Please note though that currently all compliance effort is concentrated on U.S. legislation.

Thank you, we'll add crystals - ɣCANN to the list of considered names for the smallest division of CannabisCoin (CANN x 10-8).

There is little established precedent for such units. For those used to measurement the prefixes of "milli" and "micro" for 10-3 and 10-6 respectively are quite familiar. For 10-9 we would use "nano" but what is the term for 10-8? I suppose we could use "octo" to be consistent with "nano".

Question for mathematicians and linguists: is there a specific prefix for 10-8? We'd love to hear from you.

G'day everyone Smiley

I'm just returning to my desk after a hectic southern hemisphere summer vacation season, the kind where you need a vacation to get over it Wink

A great big thank you to all those who sent well wishes for the holidays, we love you all.

Now, for those anxiously awaiting visible signs of activity the good news is wallets are to be upgraded/ refreshed this quarter. The bad news is that there has been a paucity of community feedback on the matter.

It is possible everyone was too busy at the end of last year to respond and since there is no immediate need for a fix or repair we can extend the response period to the end of January or even mid-February if discussion warrants it. There is no point waiting for new/ upgraded wallets to be tested and released, then saying "I wish you woulda..." or "You shoulda..." - put in your suggestions/ requests now.

If you don't wish to post your ideas publicly here then by all means PM or email me, just do so before the end of the month.

A couple of people have raised questions over what effect failure of the Cryptsy trading platform will have on CannabisCoin and I would suggest that the answer is "nothing". It is entirely likely many people have lost bitcoin and we have great sympathy for the victims of fraud and theft. Reading Cryptsy blog posts it looks as though they are making efforts to facilitate removal of most altcoin balances, which suggests there will be no change in the net number of CannabisCoin in circulation. Even in the very worst case scenario of Cryptsy's CannabisCoin wallets being corrupted/ destroyed then (by my estimate) we are only talking perhaps 1% of in-circulation coins. This will have no effect on CannabisCoin's utility as a medium of exchange for medical cannabis. Like Bitcoin CannabisCoin may be divided to 100-million parts (10-8) which means we could trade in cents: ˘CANN (.01CANN) , millis: mCANN (0.001CANN), micros: μCANN (0.000001CANN) or even ... what do we call the smallest division of CannabisCoin (0.00000001CANN)?

Nomenclature: Perhaps surprisingly we have never formally defined a name for the smallest CannabisCoin unit. What does the community wish to do about this?

One thing, they are not "satoshi", that name refers to the smallest division of Bitcoin.

Here are a few suggestions from the team:

  • terpenes - users will likely shorten that to "terps" as they do "sats" for satoshis
  • trichomes - what would people shorten that to be? "trichs", maybe?
  • millicents - cute but I don't know what Millicent will make of it (I suspect it should actually be "microcents" anyway).
  • cannabinoids - would they become cancanns?

Hmm... CannabisCoin, packed with 100-million terpenes... could have potential. Microcent appears technically correct but seems something of a mouthful.

Tell us what you want to do about naming the smallest division of CannabisCoin.

Do you want to make suggestions here with a general vote held in a couple of weeks?

Do you want to hold a naming competition perhaps? Best name for the smallest division of CannabisCoin gets one million million of the newly named coin fragments (to avoid any confusion that's 1012 x 10-8 = 104 CannabisCoin).

All suggestions family friendly, please.

Have a great day everyone and remember to share a smile with someone new every day Cheesy

Botched drugs trial leaves volunteer brain-dead in France

France's Minister of Health admitted on Friday that there was a "serious accident" during a drugs trial with reports that one person has been left brain-dead and five others fighting for their lives.

An investigation has been launched after the drugs trial being carried out in the western city of Rennes went tragically wrong.

Initial media reports claimed the drug was a cannabis-based painkiller, but a spokesperson for France's health ministry has told The Local this information was false.
