41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 10 Reason Why Bitcoin is better than Paypal on: September 16, 2014, 12:10:23 PM
Paypal for all the bad talk here has done a huge amount to boost internet sales.  Before Paypal, do you remember what it was like?  If I wanted to buy a book from a small bookstore online, how could I know it wasn't a scam?  If I wanted to buy something from an online auction, how could I know they seller wouldn't rip me off after I sent my money.  Paypal is a main reason why there is internet commerce today.

Yes, there fees are so high and it sucks for sellers.  But without it, the buyers wouldn't be buying.

And this is the problem with bitcoin.  When I send crypto across the net to somebody, I am always nervous.  It is pseudo anonymous, there is no way for me to get my money back, and if they run, I am completely screwed.  From a buyers perspective, it is so much riskier using bitcoin.   Scammers and cons love to be paid in bitcoin.  Real businesses hate using Paypal, but know it draws business.
42  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero featured in LetsTalkBitcoin podcast 2014-09-15 on: September 16, 2014, 12:04:43 PM
Andreas Autonopolus mentions it in this podcast around 20 minutes in:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qEi5fQcVak

It was a good podcast.  I bought in to XMR and then sold on a bubble.  Not just XMR but all the latest gen of anon coins felt like a pump.  I think there is a need for the service, but not with this batch.
43  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Unveiling the truth over the major Monero scam on: September 16, 2014, 12:01:52 PM
I think all the anon coins are scams.

Just the latest round after the country coins.
44  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Weekly SCAM ALERT - updated each monday via new posts on: September 16, 2014, 12:00:47 PM

In my opinion a scam coin is any coin with no new features or ideas (basic clone) that has a premine over 0.5% (for personal purposes) and IPO.
These coins serve no purpose other than bringing an unstable alternate currency.

New Features include:

- TOTALLY NEW Algorithm (Don't just add layers on top of x11)
- New way of earning coins e.g. Proof of Transaction
- New Design (At least the developers put some effort in)
- Additional addons to the Qt Wallet e.g. Block Explorer, Exchange, Games
- A coin built from scratch
- A coin with a powerful but possible idea. No examples for this one  Tongue

Basically NEM then as you just described it.
45  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Forbes Article Predicts Bitcoin Value will "Explode" on: June 30, 2014, 04:56:36 AM
Forbes is always so pro bitcoin.  I think the editors own a lot.

But for every editor of every newspaper that invests and then publishes, bitcoin will grow.
46  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: coinbase questions on: June 18, 2014, 02:41:02 PM
Hello all. I am getting ready ti purchase my first bitcoins. Now I just verified my bank account at coin base but do not want to wait 5 business days. If I add a card will I be able to receive them instantly? Also, the card I use on line is a vanilla visa prepaid so do pp cards work there?  . So I just bought a reload pack for it but before I add the pack to my card I want to make sure that prepaid cards work there or else I will just try to trade the reload for bitcoins at localbitcoins even though the prices there seem much more expensive than coin base.

Edit; ok I just read their faq and it says no to pp visas. Any other suggestions for places to safely trade a vsnilla reload pack to closer to the current rate?

As far as I'm aware, you cannot buy with a credit card on coinbase, but when you add your cc as a backup then your daily buy limit goes up.

Bitcoin purchases are done by ACH transaction with your bank account. It is common for these kinds of transactions to take a few business days. If you add your cc and verify identity then you can get $100 instant buy. When you buy more than $100, it takes 4 business days to get the coins, but locks in your price to the time of initial transaction.

Localbitcoins might be a good option, or if you got a circle invite then they do instant buy with cc/debit.

I've used Coinbase for a while, and I've never verified my identity. For the little amount of trading I do, the wait isn't much of an issue and I won't come close to the limits, so verifying my identity isn't worth the hassle and decrease in personal security. You only need an email address, phone number for 2FA, and a bank account for Level 1 verification. Adding a credit card along with that enables instant buy, which gets you a $100 instant limit. Verifying your identity and making a successful transaction gets you to Level 2 after a 30 day wait, which increases your buy and sell limits significantly.

+1 Newbies shouldn't be day trading.  If you are buying for the long term, it doesn't matter if it takes a week to get your bitcoin.
47  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin not decentralized anymore? on: June 18, 2014, 02:19:19 PM
bitcoin is slowly becoming more and more centralized with miners

with services and users it is diversifying
48  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Privatise the pound and replace it with bitcoin, says free-market thinktank on: June 18, 2014, 02:11:38 PM
I think it would be a great experiment if a currency was backed by bitcoin.

50  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What's wrong with eating meat? on: June 18, 2014, 01:48:32 PM
If you are a meat eater, you should kill the animal yourself and get the blood on your own hands.  If you don't, you are weak.

vegetarianism is more humane and the future of evolution.

first humans treated humans as property.

now all humans are equal

animals are property

someday animals will be equal

53  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread [Updates & Discussion][Civilized Discussion] on: June 18, 2014, 12:48:44 PM

My points are pretty clear,. (...) Nxt was launched just 2 months after IPO and 25% of people never came back to claim their coins. Given much longer delay, this number could be even higher, but lets assume it's 25%

Why do you think 10% plus all the BTC isn't enough for future development? Nxt started with 21 BTC and unclaimed nxt equaled to 10 million ( which is only 1% of total nxt) .

What's wrong with you?

Nothing is wrong with me. Out of 100, 73 came back to claim their stake, so 25%+ never showed up. The second statement is correct too as those 25% had contributed BTC that were worth 1% of Nxt which was about 10 million Nxt. That doesn't change the fact that 25% of people never showed up to claim the coins. Since in Nem every stake is equal, if 25% don't show up that would be 750 million nem

We have to take that 25% number with a bit of skepticism.  There was no audit, and it is suspiciously high.  This points to sock puppets of BCnext, knowing that the money would revert back to "development".

Also, some did come back, I think it was TaiZen who invested and then lost his password (Its hard to remember for sure).  I am sure he tried like crazy to get back in, but with those pass phrases, it was very tricky and a new type of login.

I know every investment I make gets marked and I check on it regularly.  I am sure not all people are as strict as me, but some have to be even more stricter.  It seems pretty strange and sketchy that 25% didn't come back.

--------------

That said, I am all for just burning the unclaimed stakes.  I mean really, they don't belong to the devs, and they don't belong to the NEMsters, they belong to the people that paid for them.  To me, the fair thing to do is promise to give the NEMsters their 1 mill, and give the DEVs their stated share and anybody that doesn't claim has their NEM destroyed.
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are girls using Bitcoins? on: June 18, 2014, 12:40:56 PM
when girls really start using it, then we know that bitcoin is real.  girls are very safe and cautious with money.

to make bitcoin popular with girls, it will have to be a lot easier to use, and maybe get a pink wallet.
55  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If FBI auctioned $18m of seized gold, would price of gold take a hit? on: June 16, 2014, 03:02:34 AM
Remember that Bitcoin is TINY! Its market cap is only slightly over 1% of Apple and that's just one company (granted the highest valued company there is). When you understand this is when Bitcoin gets really exciting.

EDIT: Really exciting from an investment perspective. There are many other reasons to be excited about Bitcoin also.

This is soooo true.  It is exciting from an investment perspective because we know if it gets big it has room to grow 100 times or even 1000 times bigger.  That being said, it is also so comparatively small, that another tech could displace it.
56  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's your percent chance that Bitcoin will be the "Myspace" of cryptos? on: June 16, 2014, 02:50:28 AM
All first generation tech gives way to 2nd generation.  Bitcoin is really awesome, but is not without its issues.  These issues can be addressed for a next generation coins.
57  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Marshalls auction SilkRoad bitcoins on: June 15, 2014, 02:35:01 AM
is it me or does it look like the FBI wants to give their friends coins on the cheap? it's like they're not going to even try to get the most out of the bitcoins they own..
No more for bitcoin than for any other merchanise.  It is not part of their mission to make a profit from sales of seized stuff.

Why do people think that the FBI views seized bitcoins any different from seized cash, gold, stocks, etc?

FBI guy:  How are we going to get rid of these things.
USMS guy:  How about 10 lots of 3,000 each, highest bidder, silent auction?  That will be the least amount of work for us.
FBI guy:  Sounds good.

That is probably pretty close to what happened.  Those FBI agents don't get a fee, they will get paid the same amount whether it sells high or low.  Like many government employees (actually like most people), they just want to do the least amount of work possible.
58  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Marshalls auction SilkRoad bitcoins on: June 15, 2014, 01:13:57 AM
I can easily see that some bitcoin companies will want to pick up a lot if they can get them for below market.  Coinbase being one.  They are constantly needing a bigger cold wallet.  It would be good for them to have some padding.

One thing is for sure.  Whoever buys these aren't going to be buying hotel rooms and cable TV with their bitcoins.

I wish my bank would give me a 2 million dollar credit line.  I would bid, win, default on the loan, and run away until statue of limitations expired. Hahahaha
59  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can Litecoin hold the #2 spot? Doubtful..and here are the coins who will benefit on: June 15, 2014, 01:06:31 AM
please put your names on this topic so we can all laugh at you in a year Wink

we have all heard the sky is falling on LTC before.. it's as old as "it's going on Gox soon" lol

i need to compile an I told you so list i think.

in a year people will be like Dark what ? NXt what ? Nem what ? What are those scam coins ? lol
and they will be trading up a frenzy with Jackpot coin Smiley

I think that in a year from now people will be like, "Dark what???"

But that Litecoin, NEM, and NXT will all be in the top 10.  Just in what order isn't exactly clear.  There are way too many factors.

PoS right now is an experiment that is growing and growing and growing.  It very well could pop because of a flaw or something we don't know about.  It is very possible.

On the other hand.  It could keep on going.  Did you know a guy at NXT is running a testnet on a distributed exchange?  You can trade BTC for LTC directly via the NXT asset exchange (not ever having to touch NXT except to pay the very small fee).  And since the exchange is distributed, there is no one central party to run away with your money and GOX you.  When and if it comes out, I will do all my trades there.  He is also saying he will cut the fees in half or more that regular exchanges charge.  Try to do that with BTC or LTC.

NXT in a few months has already done what took Mastercoin (working with bitcoin) over a year to do and NXT's version is waaaaaay better, faster, and easier to use.  Months or years ahead of Mastercoin.

I think that kind of innovation is hard to just forget about.  If NXT didn't have such an awful back story, it would already be much bigger than it is.  But at some point people are going to say, "yeah...... how it started sucked, but it is way more safer than Crypsy, and cheaper too. No more tickets and no more lost funds."

And that is just one of many functions that are planned.
60  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Dev Sells 50% of his Bitcoin due to 51% threat. on: June 15, 2014, 12:45:12 AM
There are a lot more people complaining that doing.

I am guessing some people just bought a miner and expect it to make them rich.   They are expecting the rest of the world to do what they want because they invested a few thousand dollars.
