41  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why don't we set up capitalist and socialist communes to test which is better? on: June 15, 2019, 02:20:15 PM
Not sure if this belongs in this forum or in the economics forum but anyway...

Why don't we just set up capitalist and socialist communes to test which economic system is better once and for all?

Both supporters of capitalism and socialism have different ideas on what is best for the people. They both want to live in a happy, safe, and prosperous society but they disagree on which economic system is better for achieving these goals. There are good arguments coming from both sides of the political spectrum but to the best of my knowledge, there has never been a controlled study that compares capitalism and socialism directly.

Now you may be thinking, "The whole 20th century was that, no?"

Well, sort of. But there were still too many confounding variables. For example, many authoritarian and totalitarian governments used socialism to justify their existence. US foreign policy was also another confounding variable that tended to affect certain economies either more positively or negatively than others.

Thoughts? Opinions?

We already run those experiments. Germany was split in two and so was Korea. Which would you rather have grown up in: West Germany or East Germany? North Korea or South Korea?

There are too many confounding variables. For example, United States foreign policy significantly favored capitalist countries over socialist ones. Authoritarian and totalitarian governments often used socialism as an excuse to prop up their legitimacy. The USSR became state capitalist towards the end of its life while North Korea de-emphasized socialism in favor of homegrown ideologies (Juche and songun) and turned itself into a de facto monarchy in the process.

That being said, I actually think capitalism and free markets provide much more successful outcomes for society (an opinion that is probably shared by over 90% of this forum and the majority of people living in the Western world). I also think it's safe to say that authoritarian top-down strains of socialism cannot work. The 20th century was good evidence for this. But the socialism that Karl Marx envisioned was not Stalin's USSR or Mao's China or Ceaușescu's Romania.

The end goal of socialism (communism) was supposed to be a stateless, classless society where the workers (rather than the capitalist class) own the means of production. Examples of societies that most closely approached this ideal include the Paris Commune, Revolutionary Catalonia, the Zapatistas, and currently the Rojava. To the best of my knowledge, libertarian and anarchist strains of socialism (e.g. libertarian socialism, anarcho-syndicalism, anarcho-communism) have never been implemented in the large scale during peacetime, so whether or not they have any merit is still very much an open question.

Hmm... My understanding is that old accounts that hadn't been touched for many years were automatically banned as a security measure after the forum got hacked and the password hashes were leaked. In fact, I have several extremely old newbie and junior member accounts which display the below message if you try to log in with them:

Sorry XXX, you are banned from using this forum!
Your account is locked because it sat inactive for years after the password hashes were leaked in 2015, and was therefore at high risk of being hacked. Email XXX@XXX.com to get it unlocked.

Does anyone know what happened to this project? I'm currently working on a site that hosts cryptocurrency white papers and came across this one in my archives. From a cursory glance, it appears that the OP hasn't posted since early 2018, all of the social media profiles are inactive, and the main website at https://botbird.io/ doesn't exist.

In fact, GoDaddy says that the domain is available for registration:

Also, it seems the negative trust given to the OP is about email spam (which is how I learned about this project) rather than scamming.

Hmm, I did some quick search on this community,

want to buy reddit account
430karma reddit account for sale
Reddit accounts for sale
[SELL] Reddit accounts with high KARMA: CHEAPEST - $12

Personally though I just scanned the /r/Bitcoin/ section, read some comments and that's it, maybe can you try and open it in this board, Invites & Accounts.

Reddit is social media site, its helpful to spread information.

There are campaigns on reddit which bounty managers will want accounts to post and repost, it could be worth for those who joined in that camapign. I don't join to it because there is not much activity but they may buy it since it has a ton of karma. Below are sample of the threads related to buying and selling reddit accounts.

Interesting, and thanks for that. I didn't realize there was a board specifically for invites and accounts.

And $40 for an account with 3,000 karma? Yikes... I've seen individual posts/comments that get 10 times that amount. Really makes me really wish I didn't delete my first Reddit account which had 2,000 karma. Cry
45  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Are Reddit accounts worth anything? on: June 14, 2019, 03:02:06 AM
I don't know if they have sort of value in monetary but you posted on the wrong forum, try asking it there and know the opinion of people that most of the time stay on reddit.
I don't use reddit regularly but where you got the idea that an account that has a lot of karma has an expected value and has sort of market?

I did a quick Google search and it does seem like Reddit accounts have been sold here in the past. Most of the threads are from 2018 or earlier though.
46  Economy / Marketplace / Are Reddit accounts worth anything? on: June 14, 2019, 02:18:30 AM
Several months ago, I made two accounts on Reddit. Throughout the course of normal posting, commenting, and replying to other people's posts, one of the accounts has managed to amass nearly 1k karma while the other has a little over 100 karma.

Does anyone know if these accounts are worth anything? Is there an equation out there that lets you know how much a Reddit account is worth based on its karma score? Does account age also factor? The accounts are only a couple of months old.

Thanks in advance. Smiley
47  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin in 2019: Are we still libertarians, cypherpunks, and crypto-anarchists? on: June 12, 2019, 06:50:49 AM
In 2009, much of the cryptocurrency community was composed of libertarians, cypherpunks, and crypto-anarchists. They tended to be anti-authoritarian and distrustful of existing financial, economic, and political institutions. It's very likely that Satoshi Nakamoto himself had such beliefs.

It's been 10 years since and a lot has changed in the meantime. Now we live in a world where everyone recognizes the word "Bitcoin". In fact, the phrase "buy bitcoin" was one of the most searched terms of 2017.

In light of such developments, do you think this is still the case today? Are we still a group of anti-establishment hacker types like Hal Finney and Nick Szabo who can trace their roots to the original cypherpunk communities of the 80s and 90s? Or has the inclusion of other groups such as social democrats, neoliberals, conservatives, and the alt-right diluted the original intentions behind Bitcoin?

In other words, did we lose our ideology by going mainstream?

49  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Whatever happened to good old-fashioned IPOs? on: June 12, 2019, 05:54:33 AM
I remember in the early days of altcoins when NXT did their IPO. It was a simple old-fashioned IPO. Yup, that's what we called it back then. An OP would write up a thread and we'd send little bits of a bitcoin to an address with a message attached. Then launch day would come, we'd start up our wallets, and receive our coins. Easy. Simple. No problem.

Nowadays it's all about Ethereum or one of its clones, ERC-20 tokens, DAOs, and exchanges. The word IPO itself is now gone - replaced by ICOs, ITOs, IEOs, STOs, IFOs, and IAOs. There is no longer a single OP. It ALWAYS has to be a team of people instead. Instead of simply sending BTC to an address, you have to make an account at an exchange or a service or a website or download a piece of software.

Whatever happened to the good old-fashioned IPOs of yesteryear?
50  Other / Meta / Re: How Many Years on Bitcointalk? Take the Poll! on: June 12, 2019, 04:35:42 AM
I can't believe it's been 5 years...

I was extremely active on these forums for the first two years or so, but lost interest after the price stagnated in the low hundreds. I returned for a few months in 2017 as things were getting interesting again but left soon after. Now I'm back and hopefully third time's the charm. Smiley
51  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain Courses on: June 12, 2019, 04:29:18 AM
There are a variety of blockchain courses on the internet. Some are good, some are bad. Some are straight facts, while others try to be fun and entertaining.

After much research, the majority of individuals that are taking blockchain courses already have an understanding about the technology but are seeking new information. To follow that, most who are taking the courses are in search of certifications to provide others with documentation of their knowledge and achievements.

Online courses through universities are providing education on progressive technologies, but there is oftentimes a large fee attached. Free online courses are good, but their certifications are not always credible in the workplace.

To conclude, as a blockchain community, what is your preferred style of learning and why? Is it through forums, articles and research papers or is it through educational courses that might provide certificates?

Learning solely from forum posts and articles tend to be quite a disjointed experience. It can also be difficult to tell what is good information and what isn't.

Research papers tend to be aimed at a very high level since their main audience is assumed to be already knowledgeable.

Personally, I've been using MOOCs (e.g. edX, Coursera, Udacity) for most of my learning. While I have never taken a blockchain course before, I find the structured nature of these courses to be ideal and the fact that the instructors tend to have master's or doctorates gives me peace of mind. The courses are almost always free to audit, and there is usually an option to pursue a verified certificate for a small fee.
52  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Adulthood is a scam, wish I could stay young forever on: June 12, 2019, 04:16:06 AM
It has been just 6 years (18-23) into my adulthood and I'm already regretting growing up. Don't get me wrong, it feels great been able to take decision on my own without been yelled at but why does being an adult feels this hard. Things I could do before I could no longer do them as I need to adjust to being called an adult. Back in the days I could manage equivalent $300 for weeks but now it finishes even before I received it. The expenses is just too much. Being an adult kinda sucks. Tell your kids growing up let them not get too excited, adulthood is just a scam. You get enslave to expense. Although you can help ease the pain by planning their future and what better way to do that then educating them on bitcoin and start hoarding coins for them.

That's the problem.

Money.

Being an adult is fine... If you had unlimited money. When you're a child, money doesn't really matter since you don't need to pay for things like rent, utilities, taxes, food, or college tuition. Give me $1 million and I'd be just as happy as I was back then.
53  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CRYPTSY stopping withdraw locking accounts without notifying users! Class Action on: January 27, 2018, 08:53:17 AM
Sigh... I had about 1,000 XRP in my Cryptsy account along with about $80 worth of shitcoins. That XRP was worth about as much as a large soda at McDonald's back then but it would be worth as much as a used car now. Cry

54  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: A simple altcoin asset tracker for your portfolio (covers top 200) on: December 09, 2017, 08:41:32 PM
Thanks. For a long time, I was looking for something like this. Before, I always had to use a calculator or put it into Google and do it manually.

So now I use this quite often. Smiley

Just a few things I'd like to point out are: 1. The price for Bitcoin Gold (BTG) is always shown incorrectly. Not sure if it's a problem with your site or Coinmarketcap's but it currently shows the price as being 11 cents, when it should really be $240, and 2. In 5th place between IOTA and Ripple is an altcoin with the abbreviation "TER". To my knowledge, no such altcoin exists.
55  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Exchanges with free coins? on: April 24, 2017, 11:38:13 PM
Is there a list of altcoin exchanges that provide free coins? (preferably whole coins rather than dust amounts)

I understand that Yobit has a free coins section but are there any other altcoin exchanges out there which have the same?
56  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitshares vs Waves Platform on: April 21, 2017, 10:40:36 AM
Well there is NXT that does tokens as well.

KMD Dex will use atomic swaps and not IOUs  Wink

It is hard for me to take Komodo seriously, or more specifically jl7777.

He has started about 100 crypto projects, all of which he asked for and received funding, and he never seems to finish any of them.

https://nxtforum.org/nxtventures/

Is like a graveyard of failed projects...

Bitcoindark
Supernet
InstantDEX
NxtCoinsco
Pangea
NxtPrivacy
PrivateBet
ATOMIC
Skynet
NeoDice
Omnigames

I am probably missing a few too... Were any of these actually completed as advertised? Some were completed to the point of being barely functional, but I wouldn't really count that as truly following through and protecting his investor's best interests. If history tells us anything, then Komodo will be much of the same.

This link might be of interest to you:

http://support.supernet.org/topic/has-james-jl777-abandoned-his-projects-in-the-past-how-many-icos-has-he-done

MGW (multi-signature gateway for converting BTC and LTC into tradeable tokens on AE and vice-versa), jl777hodl (crypto investment fund), and NXTventure (crypto investment fund) were his fully completed projects. A lot of the other ones were linked to the NXT platform which jl777 has moved away recently from due to disagreements with their core devs. Many are still under various stages of development but they won't be based on NXT anymore.

59  Economy / Digital goods / [WTS] Domino's Pizza Electronic Gift Cards (NZ) on: April 21, 2017, 04:18:05 AM
I have a number of electronic gift cards for Domino's Pizza for use in their New Zealand stores. I am willing to sell these for 20% off the usual price in BTC.

$5 Domino's Pizza card = $4 (not 100% sure if I still have these)
$10 Domino's Pizza card = $8
$20 Domino's Pizza card = $16

I will send you a link via PM or email containing the card. To use it, you will need to show it on your smartphone to the person behind the counter. I think they are valid for about 3 months or so but I'm not 100% sure about this.
60  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CRYPTSY stopping withdraw locking accounts without notifying users! Class Action on: April 21, 2017, 04:03:44 AM
So I'm suing Cryptsy. If you can't withdraw your coins, feel free to add your name to the lawsuit. We will win this.

I've got some pretty disturbing news to report about Cryptsy which I believe is going to cause the site to go full-Mt. Gox, very very soon. If you have any funds at that site, I urge you to read this post, you will thank me later.

Sigh... I had a few coins on Cryptsy and now their site has disappeared. Mostly shitcoins though but probably still worth about $50-100.

All I have with me is my original email/username and password. I had a look at the Cryptsy website and it's asking how many of each coin I had and when which I don't remember at all. Unless any new information comes to light, I'm just going to chalk this one up as a loss. Sad

Folks, don't keep your coins on an exchange!
