41  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-25 - TDV - Worlds First Bitcoin ATM is Announced- First Location:Cyprus on: April 06, 2013, 02:28:53 PM
Yes, Cyprus is good PR, but a waste of time. He should flood Spain, Italy, Greece, France and Germany with these ATMs.
The next round of bad news is going to be Australia and the US skimming 401ks/IRAs/retirement annuities, and that noise is going to explode next week.

Do you have a news source on this or is this hypothetical?  Not that skimming retirement funds directly instead of just forcing the money inside the retirement funds into treasury bonds would suprise me at this point.

He may yet... Or at least he may aggressively recruit franchisees there... He claims to have "hundreds" of orders from around the world, and he hasn't even finished a working unit yet to my knowledge.
Those "orders" are probably from bitcoiners from around the world mailing him and saying "you should put an ATM on my street, it will be awesome!".

With the number of new bitcoin rich (>1 million USD valuation), neither of are surprising.  I think that one of the main things driving the development of Bitcoin is that as the price rises, those people who have an interest in Bitcoin now have capital to work with.  It causes a positive feedback loop which I believe is driving the increase in price.  With how dispersed supporters are, even if people have selfish motives to have a Bitcoin ATM on their block, this should cause a fairly widespread deployment.  Which is a good thing.
42  Bitcoin / Press / Re: BLOOMBERG - Bitcoin Really Is an Existential Threat to the Modern Liberal State on: April 06, 2013, 12:58:05 PM
The state will never go away completely.  Have a massive haircut?  Probably.  But it will never go away.  Nature abhors a vacuum and a power vacuum in society is one of the fastest that gets filled.  This makes it that much more important to hold the government accountable and to replace the clowns in government when they start (continue) to break the laws that govern them.

Quote
1. Taxation: How do governments collect taxes on transactions in Bitcoin?

The same way that Walmart and your employer collects taxes on cash transactions.  Bitcoin will just prevent the money you already have from being confiscated without your approval.  It doesn't mean that you can't be thrown in jail for not paying your taxes.  (Not that I really agree with the level of taxes currently in force....)

Quote
2. Police:It would be almost impossible for states to detect certain crimes.

With the right incentives and disincentives in the law, it won't really matter what monetary system is in use.  Unfortunatly, there is always going to be some crime that goes unpunished.  This is true even in an authoritarian dictatorship.  It is more a question of holding crime down to a reasonable level given the freedoms that we have and are (supposed to) be guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States.  The only alternatives that would make crime noexistant is for everybody to be dead or in jail or there to be no law at all, and none of these are attractive.

Quote
3. Macroeconomic policy:A Bitcoin economy would undermine the power of real-world central banks to make monetary policy.

That's the real point.  This is what it appears that Bloomberg is really worried about.  "They are going to take away my money printing tools!"  Good.  Then they will have to actually work for once instead of just leaching off of the hard work of everybody else.

43  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-03 examiner.com Dutch bank defaults on physical gold deliveries on: April 05, 2013, 02:10:15 PM
this news makes me feel particularly cynical . Somehow I'm not surprised this is happening. Perhaps at how soon it is, but not that it is. Particularly because I suspect that the gold and silver prices are being manipulated to hide inflation.

Short discussion in Episode 1104 - Pasha Roberts on the New Movie Silver Circle

http://www.thesurvivalpodcast.com/roberts-on-silver-circle

About a third of the way through, Jack Spirko (the host) and Pasha have a quick discussion on Bitcoin.  Overall neutral to positive.  The main reservation he had was that if electricity or network was not available, they could not be exchanged.  Based on what I have heard of his opinions, he is refering to situations like a hurricane causing a localized outage rather than a world-wide power and/or network outage.

I think it makes sense. I believe it is the future, and I like that it cannot bounce or be charged back

I think this argument is going to convince a lot of businesses to start accepting bitcoin.  I'm sure there are other types of businesses where bounced checks or credit card charge backs are an issue, I just don't know which ones they are.

Also, this drops another of the critisims against bitcoin: you can't use it to pay your rent. Well, in at least one place, now you can.

criticize what you don't understand.

Pretty much.  It is so much easier than actually learning somthing and also makes the critic feel superior.  Unfortunately, there have been people like this as long as there have been people and I don't think that is going to change any time soon.   Undecided

It is an economic agreement, and as such, has value like any other contract that improves your business. This particular contract improves every business except banks.

And by and large, that is a good thing.  Currently, society is completely dominated by the too-big-to-fail banks and central banks, and a correction will be made (eventually).

49  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-29 LOL Bitcoin The Anarchist Virtual Currency at Bloomberg on: March 29, 2013, 03:35:23 PM
I couldn't stand to watch more than about a minute of the video.  "Complicated" I guess is just a code word for "I didn't do my research", "I didn't put any effort into it" or at worst "I don't want you to understand this" .  A good journalist can take an incredibly complicated subject and make it understandable to a person who has never heard of the topic before through the use of things like analogies and logic. I have read articles on theoretical particle physics and genetics that were understandable even though I will probably never work in either of those fields.   Based on what I saw and heard, I cannot say these were good journalists. It was bad enough to make me cringe.
50  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-28 Businessweek - Bitcoin May Be the Global Economy's Last Safe Haven on: March 28, 2013, 10:57:06 AM
One of the best articles I have seen, written by someone who understands crypto-currency.

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-03-28/bitcoin-may-be-the-global-economys-last-safe-haven

I'm a permabull, and this article gave me goosebumps

see you at $100 tomorrow morning!

Tomorrow morning?  I'm not sure it will take that long...

More seriously, this is probably the best article about bitcoin that I have read, bar none.  There were no blatent errors in the entire article, and there were none of the very common myths about bitcoin.  That it showed up on Bloomberg BusinessWeek is even better.

Nice. This is the sort of use where bitcoin can show its strengths. We need more of this.
52  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-25 macrobusiness.com.au Bitcoin Bubble Or New Virtual Currency on: March 25, 2013, 11:44:21 AM
It was good to see that the author of that article posted quite a few informed comments rebuting some of the misinformation being presented in the comments section on his article.  Though, there are the most common criticisms of bitcoin present as well (ponzi scheme accusations, fractional reserve banking will destroy it, how can you be sure the creator/one of the early adoptors won't arbitrarily inflate the currency, etc...)
53  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-03-15 Zero Hedge - Guest Post: "What In The World Is A Bitcoin?" on: March 16, 2013, 12:54:59 AM
Every time I read the comments on a zerohedge bitcoin article, my respect for the users there goes down a bit.

That said, I'm glad that people here take the time to try and correct the outright errors in the comments for the people who will later stumble upon the article and read the comments.

The crash will come. At the heady peaks it's at right now, only the slightest spark will be required to turn the trend negative. In 2011, the previous bubble burst when Mt Gox, then the most popular bureau d'exchange for the fledgeling currency, was disastrously hacked. This time, I doubt it would take that.

So the blockchain fork earlier this week that caused a 23% decrease in price before bouncing back to nearly the previous value burst the bubble, would that be enough?  Roll Eyes

If this were nothing but a bubble, the price would have continued to drop.  It didn't.  So not all of the price is caused by a bubble.

At least they got most of the facts right, even if I don't agree with their opinion.
55  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Announcing BitcoinGet.com - New site to get FREE bitcoins on: February 17, 2013, 04:12:21 AM
The BitcoinGet.com site works quite well for me.  The interface is quite clean and it doesn't leave me with any doubt about if I got credit for a video and what I should expect to show up in my wallet.  There are not many bitcoin earning sites that I go back to regularly, but for now, this is on my rather short list. Keep up the good work.

57  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Japanese getting into Bitcoin? on: August 25, 2012, 02:47:39 AM
I'm glad to hear about interest growing in Japan.  Keep up the good work!

Top man, Roger... that's great. Used to live in Japan myself and I write and speak Japanese, just in case you need a hand.

If your Japanese is good enough,  please help translate various Bitcoin things into Japanese.

Here is a good place to start:
translate.multibit.org

I did a few translations, but I don't trust my Japanese enough to be sure any of them are correct.  I'm afraid it's the result of learning Japanese almost exclusively from anime and Japanese music...  Grin

58  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MMM Investment Mining GLBSE.com Stock on: August 16, 2012, 10:56:19 PM
The stock itself does not launch until tomorrow August 17th so until then sadly I cannot show what I would like the stock to sell at on GLBSE.com, but I personally would like it to start at .8 per share.

And I agree that the info should be posted on the GLBSE IPO Page but if you look on the market page at the stock it will show the business model. I don't know why they don't show it in both places.

I run a small farm that produces 8.2gh/s +or- 1% and am offering each of the share holders 1/1600th of the revenue, not the profits. Meaning whatever money comes in the share holders receive no lost money for power, maintenance, downtime or anything of the sort. Now I will pay each share holder a minimum of 100% of 5 mh/s PPS per day for the previous days mining. Though if the miners have a "lucky" day where more than the average amount of blocks are solved then the each shares holder will get 1/1600th of the total revenue.

Now overall the minimum of earnings as things are right now should be .0029 per day or roughly .02 per week which would be a minimum of 2.5% earnings per week. On a good week it could easily rise to 4% if not slightly higher depending on "luck". Again I know I can't compete with Pirate but I will be transparent as possible.

Share holders have a right to vote to pass a motion with a majority of A. To offer off more stock when more mining capacity becomes available. B. To request contract amendments.

I wish this could be more like an actual business deal where people meet face to face and can judge the characteristics or a person. This bitcoin mining project is my pride and joy and I look to do everything I can do better it. At this time I believe the best interests are to earn new capital to expand my operation. Remember that me making you happy makes me happy. If the stock prices rise and I expand my operation once new stocks become available it does better for me as well.

Now as a clause of safety if something were to ever happen and made bitcoin mining not become profitable each share holder still owns 1/1600th of my mining endeavor and each would earn and equal percentage from the liquidation of assets.

I hope this answers a few questions, Thank you

I think that covers everything that I can think would be useful now.  Thanks.
59  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MMM Investment Mining GLBSE.com Stock on: August 16, 2012, 01:52:07 AM
Would you care to provide what your IPO will sell at?  I can't seem to find the initial price you will be offering the stocks at anywhere.  I've tried to get a couple of other GLBSE assets at IPO, but didn't see what the initial price would be, so I got left out of the initial sell due to having a very limited BTC balance.

Also, details as to your setup, business model, etc. that you know at this point would be useful information for investers.  I can guess some of the information from your other posts, but it would be better if you presented it here, and if possible, on the GLBSE IPO page.  More information is better, and the more detailed, the better. This is one reason I will never be giving any of my money to Pirate or any other possible ponzi schemes: the complete lack of information about how the money is generated.
60  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitDrop (or ShadyDeliveryNetwork), a non-robotic courier system on: August 08, 2012, 02:06:17 AM
I heard some noises about an insurance program which would take some of the stress out of that.

Perhaps something along the lines of a Surety bond could help?  The couriers each put up an amount of money (BTC) as collateral for carried packages.  This may also help with the repudation problem as it is easier to prove that money has been put in escrow than it is to check a person's honesty.  Also should help with bootstrapping repudation.  Not quite sure how it would work if a third-party grabs the package at a dead drop.
