41  Economy / Trading Discussion / Bitcoin Central and walls on: September 17, 2012, 07:56:18 AM
It looks like one is able to create walls in Bitcoin Central without having the necessary funds to do it.

For example, if I have 20 BTC in my account, I am able to place as many sell orders at 9.5€/BTC (let's say 50 of them). They will appear as a 1000 BTC wall at 9.5€/BTC in the order book and in the graph at https://bitcoin-central.net/order_book (note: the current wall is not mine).

I understand the use of having more orders than the funds currently available for people doing swing trading. However, those orders should probably be kept hidden when they are not backed up by any money, as they give a totally bogus representation of the real market depth.

Just got up and see 96 confirmations. Ugh I knew this gambling was going to bite me eventually.

If the software has crashed or is not running, then no transactions are going to go through. This is an all-or-nothing gamble here Smiley

Maybe he jut has problems

That was my first thought: we are Sunday, OP may have a life too, and it's not like the scam would be worth it. The idea behind automatic short-term investment through regular sends is an interesting one. If OP is a scammer, then he should wait much longer to gain much more BTC from it Smiley

However, I would understand it if it was difficult to pay the announced 199 and 19.9 prices from the 199k game. But declaring a mistake and a default there is different from not returning investments. In this case, a private settlement with the bet winner to pay the prize when profits are high enough could be attempted.
44  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins 199k Micro Edition on: September 16, 2012, 10:00:43 AM
I've put a few bets on this one, but I think the bigger prize will get too pricey for my liking... although 199BTC is a nice jackpot!

Good luck! Smiley

So, how did it go?
45  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: September 16, 2012, 09:57:44 AM
I have submitted a fix for this 8 days ago, I don't understand why it has not been accepted yet, I've not even had a comment.

Your patch is good, but the "try..except importError" block must be kept.
This is because users who install electrum using the install script are a minority (linux users with admin rights).
Most users (windows, mac, linux non-admins, or users who do not want to run an unknown script with sudo) need something that works out of the box, without needing to install anything.

Which part of the patch are you referring to? If this is the lib/gui_lite.py or lib/simple_config.py one, then you do not need to qualify the import as it is done relative to the lib/electrum (depending on whether it is installed or not) in any case.

And why did you call the directory "lib" instead of "electrum" in the first place? This would avoid the need for all this "try..except ImportError" stuff.

if you want, I suggest you get a developer account and write access, because the fact that these bugs were introduced in the code, and the current lack of responsiveness, shows that we need more people scrutinizing and caring for this software.

I don't use Electrum much right now, so I won't be able to spend a lot of time on it. Using pull requests is fine, I just need to find someone to merge them Smiley

46  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: September 15, 2012, 03:45:17 PM
another regression: simple_config is not correctly imported

Code:
ubuntu@domU-12-31-39-09-88-02:~$ electrum balance
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/local/bin/electrum", line 27, in <module>
    from electrum.util import print_error
  File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/electrum/__init__.py", line 4, in <module>
    from simple_config import SimpleConfig
ImportError: No module named simple_config

47  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins 199k Micro Edition on: September 15, 2012, 10:18:43 AM
That said, this game is flawed as the game operator has an easy way of winning the game with a very high probability. By investing 201 BTC, it can bet on 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, …, 1.98, 1.99, 2.00, and collect every bets including its own.

Another player could do that too, but would have to make sure that other players have bet at least 7.22 BTC. Otherwise, the 3% taken by the bet operator would be larger than what could be gained, and the winning player will lose money.

Even if a player choses to take that risk, it is always possible for the bet operator to top that, unless this is done at the very last moment, with the risk of having bets sent past the 199k block lost if they were not included in the last block.

So I'm not saying that the game operator will cheat, but that the 3% fees are much more than fees, in that they change the game dynamic and allow the operator to get everyone else bets if it choses to do so. The operator may be honest and let a player win, but there is no guarantee it won't abuse its dominant position there.

Am I right?
48  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins 199k Micro Edition on: September 15, 2012, 09:44:21 AM
This is a clever one, as, in order to win, one has not only to place a bet in the smallest available slot, but also must cancel the smaller ones.
49  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins Invest: The odds are ever in your favor. on: September 14, 2012, 08:25:06 PM
Can you give an update on the winnings that your service has paid? Have you had any 4 digit matches? 3 digit ones?

Note that you can do that analysis yourself by looking at the service address in the blockchain.
50  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: glbse fees on: September 14, 2012, 02:32:03 PM
So let me get this straight...

If I place an order that:

1. Matches exactly in price with an order in the order book - I pay no fee.

2. Matches exactly in price AND in the number of shares with an order in the order book - I pay no fee.

1 or 2?

Thanks in advance!!!

No.

You pay a .5% fee on the part of your order that can be matched immediately. If any part of it (or the whole order) cannot be fullfilled immediately, then you will pay no fee on this part.
51  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins Poker Fund on: September 14, 2012, 12:41:43 PM
For this fund, we will accept deposits and automatically return your funds with interest with the following terms:

Loan duration: 144 confirmations (24 hours)
Interest rate: 1.0%

[...]

Before you accuse us of any scam or ponzi, we let you know in advance that all the above statements are what we will stand by and we will continue to become a valuable service provider in the bitcoin world. We will not force you to invest in us. Be wise enough to make a good decision.

pirateat40 offered 7%/week while you are offering 7.21%/week compounded. Since you will use the new investors money to reimburse older investors (it would make no sense to do it another way and handle seggregated wallets if you need a continuous loan for your players), it cannot be distinguished from a Ponzi scheme until you either reimburse all the funds or fail to do so.

I get that you are not willing to publicly disclose your identity, but why not send some identification proofs to a few trusted, non-anonymous members of this community, with the explicit authorization to release them if you fail to reimburse funds without convincing explanation for a specified period of time (two weeks)? That should make everyone more comfortable trusting you with their money.
52  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins Invest: The odds are ever in your favor. on: September 14, 2012, 11:51:18 AM
Status update:

Amount received: 3,347.57 BTC
Amount paid: 3,359.32 BTC
Number of bets paid: 973

These figures does not include the old receiving address.

It would be interesting to plot the amount lent against the number of confirmations required. Having to wait for 6+ hours makes it much less exciting than it was at the beginning.
53  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [COMING SOON]Unclescrooge 1-week deposit program at 2%/week on: September 14, 2012, 11:25:19 AM
What are the risks?

Funds freezing by various institutions that hold part of my fiat funds is the main risks, but, beside being unlikely, I do manage it at my best. A high spike in BTC price could also hurt me, but because I mainly do arbitraging, only the profits (your interests) would be at risks. I could die also, but I'm young and in good shape so also unlikely Smiley All in all that's not high risks against the reward.

It's great to see well-identified people propose deals with exposed business models, congratulations.

However, I don't understand how only the profits would be at risk in the example you gave, as shorting a position usually means that the possible loss is unbounded. If you borrow then sell 10 bitcoins at 9€/BTC and you have to buy them back at 12€/BTC, then you will be 2.7 bitcoins short (32.4€) of the 10.2 bitcoins you have to return to your creditor. If the price spikes to 18€/BTC, you will be 5.2 bitcoins short (93.6€). 90€/BTC (let's take the extreme) and you'll be 9.2 bitcoins short (828€), and so on.

(edited to add that the loss is potentially illimited in FIAT, added the corresponding amounts between parentheses)

One thing that is still unclear to me in your proposal would be the risks for the lenders. If, for example, there is a high spike in BTC price as you describe above, would you still be able to reimburse your lenders and pay the 2%, even if it temporarily costs you money to cover the potentially unbounded losses?
54  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Hashkings Lending,Deposit 1.25% INSURED, ALL PPT ACCOUNTS CLOSING ON 8/19 on: September 14, 2012, 10:59:21 AM
I received 16.96 btc, which is my 20 coins deposit with deducted interest payments (8 x 0.38). Thanks.
Now I'm waiting my 50 coins deposit back.

I still haven't received anything concerning my 27+ BTC deposit so far.
55  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Trendon Shavers - Family Contact made on: September 13, 2012, 09:18:44 AM
Please let the father know the FBI has already been contacted.

In this case, you should send the OP an evidence of this FBI contact, so that he does not unknowingly lie to the father on your behalf if it appears that this contact never took place or was done in a way that nothing will happen (you didn't just drop an anonymous mail to postmaster@fbi.gov, right?).
56  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins Invest: The odds are ever in your favor. on: September 12, 2012, 02:07:10 PM
Code:
20 * 1/65536 + 2 * 1/4096 + 0.2 * 1/256 + 0.02 * 1/16 + 0.002 * 61167/65536 = 112767/32768000 ~ 0.3441%

Should be
Code:
20 * 1/65536 + 2*15/65536 + 0.2*(256-16)*65536 + ...

You're right:

Code:
20 * 1/65536 + 2 * 15/65536 + 0.2 * 240/65536 + 0.02 * 3840/65536 + 0.002 * 61440/65536 = 3721/819200 ~ 0.4542%

Is it better?
57  Economy / Gambling / Re: HungerCoins Invest: The odds are ever in your favor. on: September 12, 2012, 12:34:50 PM
I guess you could increase your odds of a match by doing lots of smaller transactions, but then the 0.2% interest is pretty much eaten by transaction fees.

Also, it will be 2% of a smaller amount, and won't change anything on the long term.

Actually it will, just a little. Eventually you will hit 3 or 4 digits. It's just a matter of time Smiley

What do you mean? Isn't the expected value this one?

Code:
20 * 1/65536 + 2 * 1/4096 + 0.2 * 1/256 + 0.02 * 1/16 + 0.002 * 61167/65536 = 112767/32768000 ~ 0.3441%

How would splitting into smaller amount help at increasing the expected value?

1. The crowd here are really friendly and there doesn't seem to be too many eejits like on other non-bitcoin forums.
2. People here are really helpful to newbies or is that just because we is in the newbies section. Average IQ seems high.
3. People are excited about something  Wink
4. These forums seem to be the focal point for this entire (nascent) industry.

5. Newbies have a great sense of irony Smiley
60  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Going after Trendon Shavers, Pirateat40, BTCST on: September 11, 2012, 08:58:04 AM
There is a group of us who are gathering evidence and collecting names for legal action against Trendon Shavers, Pirateat40, BTCST.

We have collected a large amount of information and are working with the Bitcoin Police. We will be consulting a lawyer and potentially law enforcement.

As long as you do not contact law enforcement, nothing prevents Trendon Shavers (assuming he is pirateat40) from disappearing, as he has the right to get out of touch at any moment. Do not forget that a suspect in an investigation may be forbidden to leave the country. It does not mean that he would not be able to flee anyway, but that would make it an additional offense, for which he might be convicted even if he gets away with the bitcoins theft.
