41  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: When will GPU mining become unprofitable? (electricity $>BTC generated) on: September 27, 2012, 01:21:12 PM
I have a 660 Ti GTX card and am trying to sell it to get a 7970. What's the low and high ball estimate for when the electricity costs surpass BTC generation (in a pool)? I already need a video card for gaming, so don't consider capital costs.

If you state your electricity prices it will be easier to tell. I did some calculations a month ago, and with my electricity costs here in Germany (0.25 EUR per kilowatt hour) even FPGA boards would result in losses.

mine is at 4 hours 17min but I've been logged in way more than that

I guess the algorithm only polls at periodic frequencies, perhaps many of your visits where too short to get counted?

Would be interested in the results of this (imho reasonable) way to fight off troll accounts. Are these 4 hours and 5 posts really enough?

If you use linux anyway, placing the wallet in a small cryptsetup partition (say on a USB stick) would give encryption _and_ the ability to make it decryptable in case you die, as cryptsetup allows for multiple keys for the same partition - just make yourself a key and give another one to your SO, kids, or parents.
