41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm MtGox, here's my side. on: June 21, 2011, 01:57:56 AM
That's at least the third time you've posted that now.  Not that I think you have an agenda or anything.

While we're quoting our own posts:
It's a controversial incident and I don't claim to have all the facts, but for the sake of cutting through the FUD... it's actually only been three months since Mt. Gox commented on this:
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=3712.msg57901#msg57901
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=3712.msg62282#msg62282

The last comment was that they couldn't say anything more because it might go to trial.  This will be satisfactory for some people and not for others, but there is no clear evidence that they ever behaved unprofessionally.
To be precise, itīs exactly the third time I have posted this information, because I do believe it to be relevant to the current situation with MtGox and I usually donīt post all that much despite reading the forums for quite some time.

Whilst you provided an ad hominem attack, I am still waiting for your answer to my question: Is it going to be (another) 6 month till MtGox resolves&explains the current situation?
For a currency that has gone really mainstream over just about the last month, this does not quite seem to cut it.

Iīd be really interested to hear your response, if youīre not to busy hyping MtGox.
I wasn't aware any question had been directed at me.  If one was, it probably shouldn't have been, because I don't have access to any more information than you do.  "Not that I think you have an agenda or anything," was admittedly a fairly immature way for me to say, "you obviously have an agenda."  That's fine though, so do I, although it is not "hyping Mt. Gox", but merely to do what little I can to counteract the misinformation and character assassination that seems to be spreading so rapidly with regard to all parties in this hacking matter.  Based on what I've seen of the behaviour of these parties, I do currently side with Mt. Gox, but that could change very quickly as the facts come out.

I was trying to point out in the post that I quoted that the question "Is it going to be (another) 6 month till MtGox resolves&explains the current situation?" is meaningless.  There is no sense in which Mt. Gox has been unresponsive for six months, so I don't know how you came up with that arbitrary figure.  If you are referring to the amount of time since the accusation you linked to was originally made against Mt. Gox, your apparent expectation that the matter should be entirely resolved by now is simply unreasonable.  Mt. Gox has issued many statements on the matter, the last of which said that it was likely going to court and for this reason could not divulge any more information.  Court proceedings take a long time.  What more could they have done by now to satisfy you?

I am unable to login to Mt. Gox.  Says they don't have my email.   Is this true for everyone or what. I really can't get a clear response. Thank you.
This will be the case until they launch the account restoration page.
43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm MtGox, here's my side. on: June 21, 2011, 12:24:51 AM

I think you guys owe us all at least a redacted version of what the hell actually happened.

Do you think that you could wait until they have had a chance to figure it out?

Another 6 months?

Does anyone still remember how MtGox handled the last situation where there was a large amount at stake for MtGox?

http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=3712.0

That guy explained himself, was hounded by the community, MtGox barely bothered to respond, made some outlandish claims, froze funds and rapidly moved the whole operation to a different jurisdiction (Japan) after the guy finaly decided to get lawyers involved.

MtGox promised to inform the community! No news yet, and itīs been 6 months!

Agree 100%

Synaptic has to be the worst troll on this site.  He poisons nearly every thread.

He hasn't made any useful contributions that I can see.  If he has something productive to say, he should just say it, once, without profanity, if his infantile mind will allow him to do so.  Better yet, he should actually DO something, like start an exchange or a better fork of the Bitcoin software.

FUCK.
As Synaptic likes to say, QED.

Hey, doesn't matter either way.

THEY'RE GETTING THE AUTHORITIES INVOLVED.

And the authorities will be like "oh, so you were running what?

I think we're going to need to mail MagicalTux a cake with a file in it.

When you dance with a bear, you stop when the bear wants to stop.

I'm pretty sure MT has been one of the more proactive exchange operators when it comes to covering their bases legally ahead of time.  He pays taxes, and just a few days ago he was offering to cooperate with any authorities investigating Silk Road.  The evidence I've seen is that MT has tried to make Mt. Gox as not-under-the-table as possible.

Thread watched.

Just one more vote of support for Mt. Gox.  Mistakes were made, flamers were outraged, but your professionalism in dealing with crises like this has never failed to impress me.  Your customers are holding you to a very high standard in resolving this matter, but I trust you recognize that and will find the most optimal compromise that you can.  Please continue to post as much information about the situation publicly as you are at liberty to divulge.

Just to be clear, you mean that the next article for Bitcoin Weekly has already been written, and will be published once your donations to that address exceed 0.50 BTC?  Sounds like a reasonable model to me so long as your site is able to keep people's attention from publication to publication.  (Didn't you do the same thing back when you first started?)

I think this attack on Mt.Gox was a reality check. People's valuation of BTC will be lower as a result. Single digits is not unreasonable.
This is entirely true.  I think what Vladimir's point out is the incredible reality that, in spite of the fact that single digits would be totally reasonable, it hasn't happened that way.  The reality check has come and gone, and yet the loss of value has been minimal.  There are no forces remaining to shock the price lower than it has already gone, except for the flood of liquidity once Mt. Gox reopens, which doesn't really have anything to do with the "reality check".

Unless it's the case that all of the traders who have been transformed into bears by this incident have been unable to trade because they were Mt. Gox users.  In that case, the reopening may bring not only a flood of liquidity, but also a flood of bearishness.

However things happen, this is going to be fun to watch for those of us without much to lose.

+1 Vladimir

I predict there will be some chaos when Mt. Gox reopens, because a large fraction of all actively circulated bitcoins are caught up in their servers.  However, the price is the price - the consensus of the markets that, at this point in time, 1 BTC is worth roughly $14 or $15, is in fact a consensus of users that this is the correct valuation.  There's no reason why this evaluation would change depending on whether or not Mt. Gox is open - the only issue with the reopening is that the flood of liquidity could spook some traders for a day or two.  But the fact that the price has held more or less steady through this crisis tells me that Bitcoin is more stable than even the optimists could have predicted.

Right now selling a little more than 1.000 coins worth it roughly $1.000 on TradeHill would half the price to $6.5 per bitcoin.

I think TradeHill has too small volume to draw conclusions on it. When all Mt Gox users get their money back and their coins back we'll see how they react.

Well, I'm judging based on TradeHill, Britcoin, Bitmarket, Bitcoin7, Bitomat and Bitcoin2Cash.  This is what I meant by "consensus of the markets".  The psychology of traders worldwide seems to be in agreement as to the correct price of Bitcoins at the current time.  I gauge the fact that the volume of all of these markets combined is less than 1/10th of Mt. Gox's to be largely irrelevant, but I could very well be proven wrong.

will you be buying or panic-selling?
I plan to be panic-buying, panic-selling, and panic-dancing-around-naked.  It will be a fun day.
52  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [Announcement] - MetaCo.in, group buying deals from the bitcoin world! on: June 20, 2011, 09:32:22 PM
I'd just like to pipe in to say I think this is pretty brilliant.  The biggest barriers, as I see it, to Bitcoin being used as a currency rather than just an investment (and pretty much everyone agrees that this is a good thing) are the various anxieties keeping people from wanting to spend their bitcoins once they buy them.  This has been talked to death in threads claiming that Bitcoin needs to be inflationary rather than deflationary (which clearly ain't gonna happen).  While inflation is a nifty way to build "willingness to part with one's savings" directly into an economic system, MetaCo.in is poised to show that this can be achieved just as effectively through inventive business models, to the benefit of everyone.  If huge discounts + time-limited deals don't make people want to spend, I don't know what would.

What's the whole story here?  I gather this is the cover page of a report by a chemistry lab in Shanghai on an ore sample supplied by Jilin Petrochemical?  If the report is mostly figures, I'd be able to sort it out for you easily enough; if it's big blocks of text, it'd might be a bit too much trouble for me to translate.

1/2 troy ounce of silver = $18.12
(or 1/2 avoirdupois ounce of silver = $16.52)

Either way, "half an ounce of silver" will be my mental image for bitcoins for the next... however many hours they hover around this price.

the teacher of english class says "class todays word is 'hostess'  can you use it in a sentence for me please?

the french boy says "my mom worked as a hostess her entire life"

"excellent use of the word hostess, guy"

the african boy says "I love hostess cup cakes"

"excellent use of the word hostess, abubru," applauded the teacher, "now wang, it is your turn"

wang looked confused and scratched his head, but then he exclaimed, " Zhee other day, my phone ring ring ring and i pick it up and i say "hostess?Huh""

You're bored today, aren't you?  Tongue
I've been trying to advocate for a separate "Currency Exchange" subforum and it's frustrating to see responses that it's not necessary because the words Buying and Selling are already perfectly clear, when it's obvious from a casual look at the front page here just how clear they really are. I can't reason the admins into it, so I'll embarrass them into it instead.
Makes sense.  Smiley

No, you are interested in selling something for a large quantity of bitcoins (most likely dollars). This thread should be in "Selling".
