41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's going on? Bitcoin for the rich only? on: April 13, 2018, 10:46:06 AM
Hi, this problem seems to be resolving a bit now. Recently I've been able to get away with pretty low fees and a fast transaction. Not like it used to be but still about the same cost as using something like Skrill. If you check the mempool size before sending, you can get a good idea of how things are.

I found johoes mempool charts useful, you can change parameters like period and currency in the top bar, this one is showing the last 3 months. When it is low it's a good time to send.

42  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Do you guys use OpenBazaar? on: November 27, 2017, 09:50:39 PM

What are your thoughts? What would an ideal bitcoin marketplace look like to you?

hi, OpenBazaar is pretty good already if you consider that it works fundamentally differently to any existing or past online marketplace. It had to be designed from scratch and the team did an amazing job so far. There is nobody 'in charge', its a truly free marketplace. Because all transactions are recorded on the blockchain, you can see the record of any seller and see what other buyers have said about their experience.

It is not designed for people who don't care about freedom and privacy. Designing yet another system that sits in between buyers and sellers would be a total waste of time anyway, that market is saturated already. Cryptocurrencies open up many new possibilities that just can't be done with the cumbersome and parasitic banker currencies, via a big impersonal corporation and those possibilities (primarily the ability to buy and sell online directly, person to person like humans have done throughout time) are what open bazaar is designed to facilitate.

I've been using it since the alpha versions in testing. Even then I was impressed by how stable it was. The latest version is even better. It's the easiest store set up I have come across; much easier than ebay, for example (though that's not difficult to achieve!).

Where OB really excels is in how easy it is to buy or sell stuff, no need to involve banks nor give a cut of the profit to anyone. You don't have to wait for the banks to pay you, the payment is direct to you.

What most people don't seem to get is that OB doesn't belong to anyone. It's a fully distributed network that anyone can use, without having to get someone's permission first. A website could not provide that. Once the network is in use, there's nothing to stop someone creating a web interface to it, or any other kind of interface. It's open source and the possibilities are endless.

Sadly, most people don't seem to care about things like that any more. It seems most are dubious about using something that "might be associated with criminals" or something...  even though no criminals will benefit from you buying a crate of wine on OB. and yet they have no problem actively supporting a scumbag like Bezos! It amazes and baffles me.

As Bruce Lee once said, “Those who are unaware they are walking in darkness will never seek the light.”

I am really happy that OB exists. It's early days yet but I'll use it and promote it as much as I can because it offers a ray of light for the future and for the preservation of freedom generally.

43  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: [FaucetHub] BTC.ms - Bitcoin Micro Shortener. Shorten links, get paid. on: October 10, 2017, 09:16:52 PM
Just became member but im afraid the link provider is not working good. I wanted to shorten a link and 20 minutes past it still loading!
It may have just been a temporary glitch, mine is working fine. You could try it if you like, http://roflfaucet.com/ (link is in the claim box, about half way down.) - if it works then yours should too. Try it again!
All the best

Of course, there is no ETA, it's ZenAds!

yambub> There is a sneaky benefit that is often forgotten. The more exposure you have the more likely you are to remember a certain ad. So, once you are looking for a specific service or product, you are far more likely to go looking for the one that you've seen advertised about. So, repeated views of the same ad is the best way for an advertiser to get you to remember it's product. Name recognition...
You might not click the ad the first time but after seeing it 511 times, you might just be curious enough to see what all the fuzz is about.

Kema you're right. I think the ideal is a combination of low CPM plus extra when there is an actual click...  but I think running a shortener service, it would be hard to keep track of each click and where it came from, and award CPC as well as CPM - more work, more % needed. And we already have ads on our sites which can do the CPC thing anyway. I see shorteners as a small but guaranteed bonus.

Notwithstanding the benefits of multiple exposures, unique views are worth more to an advertiser. Making every site 'equal' might appear fair, but all it does is spread the cash more to those with heavy repeat traffic. Those who get a few visits a day will end up with less than those who get 50 a day from the same person. If you were an advertiser, which would you really prefer, 25 x 2 views from 25 different users, or 50 from the same one user?
46  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: [FaucetHub] BTC.ms - Bitcoin Micro Shortener. Shorten links, get paid. on: September 04, 2017, 01:20:33 PM
I understand what people are asking for here: to get paid for every view or click. But think for a moment from the point of view of the advertisers. Would you want to pay for every view of your ad, even those who do many faucets and give you maybe 100 views in a day? Or would you want to pay once for each actual viewer?

Look at what the short link providers offer to the advertisers. Would you go for xx per unique view per day, or just per view, regardless of how many times that IP address viewed your ad? Which sounds like a better deal to you? It's not just about us, it's about what's fair for all parties in the trade.

If you want ad revenue you have to offer the advertiser something worthwhile. That's what fairness means. If you are bringing people who already saw the ad and didn't bite, the chances of biting now are lower. Those views are worth far less. Really not worth bothering with, unless he has an unlimited budget.

1. The publisher gets paid for every view using the shortened url.
This would be unattractive to the advertiser. The views that result in a sale are the only views he is interested in. The new viewers are far more important than the ones who already viewed and were not interested.

2. Same payout rate for all views. (No matter where the visitor is from)
Again, the publisher in most cases will not be interested in views from countries where the average wage is 10% that of the tier 1 countries. And if you're selling cloud mining you would be wise not to advertise to South-East Asia because on average they are way more intelligent than anyone else, except Ashkenazi Jews.

So there are market reasons why things are the way they are. Instead of cursing the darkness, light a candle, figure a way to be the first site that people want to visit when they get up. Or at least accept that you are entering into a trade with other people, who also have desires and are the ones doing the paying.

Middleman

The middleman has to find a balance between the desires of the publisher and those of the advertiser. If he gets it wrong he'll get neither. There are so many url shorteners out there right now, and those offering what seems to be a better deal for publishers are by definition offering a worse deal for advertisers. They won't last long. Worse, some of them only appear to be offering us a better deal, and in fact are not.

I think btc.ms strategy will attract publishers who have or hope to have worthwhile sites for advertisers to reach out from. It will be unattractive to those with no differentiation. Other sites may offer what you ask for, but how long will advertisers support a model that wastes their money? If you're selling shoes you need to know about shoes and why people buy them. If you're selling ad space you need to know about advertisers. Notions of entitlement don't help, they just hold us back.

51  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Is there a safe way to get the BCH yet? on: August 05, 2017, 05:33:29 PM
Thanks for the info. It just leaves me with one question: Is it worth waiting for some other solution to arise, or is this as good (bad!) as it gets?
Thanks a lot.

I don't want to empty my wallet and start a new one because I have addresses I have given out to others.

I've been reading all this stuff about downloading an anonymously signed wallet (how can anything be anonymously signed? ) and all the warnings and caveats... Is there likely ever to be a safe and simple way to do this, or are we just stuck with messy kludges?

Honestly I am sick of this already! Those guys are supposed to be running a currency, but they are acting like a bunch of amateurs. I know it's not Electrum's fault...

Thanks
53  Bitcoin / Electrum / clickforafrica.org needs electrum guru to help set up web wallets on: July 17, 2017, 03:32:48 PM
Hi, I am setting up a system for users to raise funds for internet access for remote rural communities in Africa. I need to set up an electrum wallet in a wordpress site to enable anyone to get a BTC address they can use to collect satoshi for us.

I am not very familiar with the arcane side of setting up wallets, having only done it using the graphical part of the electrum app. If anyone could spare some time to guide me through the set-up I'd appreciate it.  I'm using the Bitcoin and Altcoin Wallets WordPress plugin

Thanks!

The more zen the better.
The International Association of Advertisers once hilariously said,
Quote
"A friend is someone you know about, someone you can trust. A brand's a bit like that. You meet this friend through advertising.... Without advertising, how would you recognize your friends?"
After a while I started to think, yeah but wouldn't it be wonderful if that was true?

Good luck, I'm sure it will hit all by itself.

Regular faucets are created for scamming, surely a HUB of such faucets* is even more lucrative?
* no pun intended

What are you talking about? That's provably untrue, A few scammers make faucets, but your statement is nonsense.
60  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's going on? Bitcoin for the rich only? on: June 10, 2017, 01:05:54 AM
The current situation limits the use of bitcoin for small transfer and "street food" type of purchases, that's true, but its other uses like a store of value, quick and cheap overseas transfer method, anonymous payment system (yes it is anonymous if you buy your coins for cash, get from a giveaway, faucet, and such) and investment opportunity. Maybe it's destiny is not to function like credit cards.

I tried setting up a 50 dollar transaction and to clear in 20 blocks it was over 5 dollars., With skrill it was 50 cents!
