41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Companies Are Stockpiling Bitcoin to Pay Off Cybercriminals on: June 08, 2016, 03:37:26 PM

Damn, this kind of thing is what makes bitcoin will never be accepted by all circles of society, and make government more incentive would prohibit bitcoin in their country.  Angry Angry Angry

That's nonsense, if you compare the amount of crime done in cash compared to Bitcoin, you will realize how it's less than 1% of crime committed in Bitcoin, compared to cash.
Well no. Europol: Bitcoin accounts for over 40% of criminal-to-criminal online payments. And bitcoin is only about one one-billionth the size of fiat. So yeah, fewer crimes involve bitcoin than fiat, but that's like saying your trailer park is safer than NYC because fewer murders happened in your trailer park than in the city of New York Sad
In any case, governments will be forced to use Bitcoin if they want to get rid of ramsonware, deal with it.
Oh, they will, they will. And remember: banning is so much simpler than regulation Smiley

There is a survey, "commissioned by Citrix and carried out by Censuswide [that] quizzed 250 IT and security specialists in companies with 250 or more employees across the UK"
From [what I believe to be an exhaustive] list below, which do you believe? (you may chose more than one):
1. Citrix never commissioned Censuswide to conduct a survey; Citrix lied.
2. Citrix commissioned Censuswide to conduct a survey, which Censuswide never conducted; Censuswide lied.
3. A survey quizzing "250 IT and security specialists in companies with 250 or more employees across the UK" is not research.
4. Fuck U h80r, leave bitcoin alone!
Huh

5. there was a survey.. about IT security guidelines of the FTSE350 companies where 2 thirds (yep they got those numbers inaccurate too as 2/3 of 350 isnt exactly 250)... but nothing related/mentioned in those guidelines about stockpiling bitcoins!!
thats the third post i have said these words..

Link to the Censuswide study & why you think it's the study being referenced by the article.

The link is to Citrix, the company which commissioned the survey. Why does that trouble you?

"Research – commissioned by Citrix and carried out by Censuswide – quizzed 250 IT and security specialists in companies with 250 or more employees across the UK to look at their strategies to defend against cyber and ransomware attacks."

For all I know, Citrix also tells car owners not to use Carnauba wax. What does that have to do with anything?

And why all the rage? Are you suggesting that the numbers are inflated? Or that Bitcoin ransomware isn't a thing?

its that there is no actual research that 250 companies are stockpiling bitcoin in the UK purely for ransomware attacks.

44  Economy / Economics / Re: What would happen if Bitcoin became a legal currency? on: June 08, 2016, 02:48:10 PM
Bitcoin is legal in most countries , regardless of their gov rules.

That's 'coz you don't understand what "legal" means.
45  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can we still say that BTC transactions are faster? on: June 08, 2016, 02:45:09 PM
I've never had a transaction take more than 3 seconds to transmit and be received, so yes reasonable transactions are still very fast.
Not sure what you mean by "reasonable." You never had to wait for (at least one) confirm?

Can we still say that bitcoin transactions are faster?
I have send some of my bitcoins to an address and about one hour has been passed but still there is not even a single confirmation.

what do you say about the transaction timing?

Faster compared to what?
money transfers within the same bank => probably not
money transfers between two banks in the same country => don't know
international money transfers => yes

You forgot to mention cash transactions. Zero fee. Instant. Smiley

Cash transactions are dangerous IMO, bitcoin transactions are the fastest, @OP if you need your transactions to get confirmed faster, then pay a larger fee

Dangerous? Most of my daily transactions are cash, have been since I was a kid.
Was mugged once. Would have lost far more if used BTC, would have given my priv. key for sure.
Because am a wimp, there were three d00ds, and one had a popper.

has anyone actually read the article and clicked the so called research??.. i know Lauda hasnt

ok here is the summary..
1. an MIT blog failed miserably at research.
2. it said that based on a survey 250 it professionals were surveyed.. well the "research" is a blog from citrex that said two thirds of the FTSE350 companies are using citrex's 10 step guide.. yet if you actually go to the guide https://www.citrix.com/blogs/2016/06/01/ten-steps-to-cyber-security-guidance-for-business/ and then use the "find" tool to find the word bitcoin.. guess what.. no mention of bitcoin whatsoever.

Te article cites a survey "commissioned by Citrix and carried out by Censuswide – quizzed 250 IT and security specialists in companies with 250 or more employees across the UK to look at their strategies to defend against cyber and ransomware attacks. ... The poll also found that a third (33 per cent) of UK companies are now building a ready stockpile of digital currency (for example, Bitcoin) in case of ransomware attack."

Unless you feel these companies are stockpiling Ethers or BBQcoins, you're simply dead wrong Smiley
51  Economy / Economics / Re: What would happen if Bitcoin became a legal currency? on: June 08, 2016, 01:58:00 PM
Everyone would like the bitcoin is accepted in all online and real stores and, as as mentioned in the title, what would happen if Bitcoin became a legal currency?

What do you mean by "legal currency," OP? Bitcoin is legal in most countries. Accepting it as a form of payment is up to individual businesses.
52  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Companies Are Stockpiling Bitcoin to Pay Off Cybercriminals on: June 08, 2016, 01:41:38 PM
Silly to think this is negative for bitcoin's reputation. How many times has fist been used as a ransom, countless times.

Exactly.  Pay no attention to it, fiat is just as bad.  They also need to back up this claim with more facts and names.

They DO back up their claims with facts and name, what's wrong with you?
Quote
A small survey by corporate networking company Citrix indicates that some IT professionals are even stockpiling bitcoins so they can pay up quickly in the event ransomware strikes their network. Out of 250 IT and security workers at U.K. companies with more than 250 employees, a third said they were stockpiling the currency. A researcher at Cornell recently tweeted that the university’s treasurer created an account with the Bitcoin exchange Coinbase so as to be ready if ransomware struck.

And yeah, fiat is behind more crime than bitcoin. That's because it's roughly a billion times bigger than bitcoin.

Damn, this kind of thing is what makes bitcoin will never be accepted by all circles of society, and make government more incentive would prohibit bitcoin in their country.  Angry Angry Angry
Wrong. This is a kind of thing that shows just how dumb the people in charge of these companies are (assuming that the story is not made up).

Allegedly, these companies use the following logic:
Instead of creating and keeping backups (which everyone should do for their own data) which costs X amount of money, we will buy X*k (k - number of incidents) amounts of Bitcoin to keep paying the cybercriminals. Roll Eyes

Excellent point.
If you don't wanna get raped, disfigure your face & cover yourself in pig shit. If you walk around without taking these basic precautions, don't blame the rapist, it's your own damn fault.
53  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Companies Are Stockpiling Bitcoin to Pay Off Cybercriminals on: June 08, 2016, 01:15:13 PM
Linked article, implies that shit IT security practices are the norm, hence the need for ransom money when they inevitably get attacked

http://www.professionalsecurity.co.uk/news/case-studies/ransomware-attack-study/

There are two ways to improve security:
1. Wear body armor every day, practice judo (what you propose).
2. Ask jackbooted thugs to rid the streets of criminals, i.e. "shoot all potential criminals in the face, pl0x!" (how modern society deals with crime).

You're mistaken.  Sure, only up 1.37 % in the past 24 hrs, but taking into consideration the fact that ETH price has increased MORE THAN TENFOLD!!!1 Shocked in 2016 alone, I consider that a minor setback Smiley

This really is a bilious community venomous community poisonous community disgusting sperghole. No wonder Satoshi got sick of this shit and split.

@DonQuijote: It has been, it's getting better play in the media, people aren't actively trying to distance themselves from it, but profitable in the future?
Will give you a better tip: Don't take financial tips from Anons on the internet. Wait...

BTC is still was the anchor for Alts such as Eth and so on...
Fixed.
Many exchanges have USD/ETH pairs. Can't rest on your laurels when others are busy shifting paradigms. That which isn't busy disrupting outmoded legacy finance... why, it's busy dying!

(but it's all right, Ma Cry)

well this is true, however Eth is not going up at he moment either...... as BTC rises Eth has dropped... so....  Grin

58  Economy / Speculation / Re: Lose all your capital fast, with MatTheCat and his TA 101A! on: June 04, 2016, 04:08:58 PM
I think that after chinese pushed the market last week, it's not the turn of western exchange, probably for the "same" reason (not a devaluation though, but weaknesse of the $)
Let me see if I get this: Chinese purportedly bought BTC due to yuan getting devalued rel. USD ($ too damn strong!)
now the westerners are gonna buy BTC because $ too damn weak?
You must'a been to some expensive universities....

CNY is being devalued on purpose, the Chinese government wants the yuan to be weak because it makes exports more attractive (china relies heavily on exports to make money). Good sold in CNY to countries who use stronger currencies will be cheaper, and therefore more people will import Chinese products, instead of products from for example eastern Europe.

Of course, rich Chinese aren't happy with a weakening CNY because their money will evaporate. They want to spend more (especially if they want to import luxurious goods, which will become more expensive as yuan devalues).

That's why some might cash out into USD. Either directly, or via BTC. Zero reason to be stuck in BTC.
That said, "rich people" don't store their wealth in fiat money. Because it's stupid, that's not what money's for. Rich people who think that keeping their money in a mattress is smart become poor people, with or without 0.5% yuan depreciation.

Quote
The dollar can still be weak compared to other currencies though, such as euro and swiss frank.
Devaluation of yuan rel. USD & USD becoming weak rel. yuan are mutually exclusive.
Try logic.

...
From the ETH website:

Quote
Ethereum would never be possible without bitcoin—both the technology and the currency—and we see ourselves not as a competing currency but as complementary within the digital ecosystem. Ether is to be treated as "crypto-fuel", a token whose purpose is to pay for computation, and is not intended to be used as or considered a currency, asset, share or anything else.

Can you guys stop it with all the ETH propaganda already?

Of course ETH would never be possible without Bitcoin, just like a Ferrari would not be possible without Grog inventing the wheel. Thanks, Gorg.

bitcoin is both money as well as an asset class, so it's a good investment right now. It's not the same as 'money in the mattress'.

Try reading.

Bitcoin may or may not be a good investment (it's more of a pyramid scheme), but that's not what's being discussed. Fixed your bold tags 4u Smiley
