41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: January 06, 2014, 03:31:30 PM
Sorry guys but I'm starting from ground zero here with BOINC.  I noticed the link on the first page of this thread points to a version of BOINC that is actually pretty old now.  The prod version of BOINC appears to be 7.2.33.

Should I use the latest version of BOINC or the version that this thread points to?

I grabbed 7.2.33 and then decided I better ask before continuing.  Also there is an option in the BOINC install (7.2.33) about installing a service that seems to intentionally prevent applications from using GPU's.  I'm guessing we do not want to install this service and it is unchecked by default.

Is the group behind BOINC trying to shut projects like this down with the latest versions?  Why would they have a service to prevent GPU usage?

Again I apologize for my noob questions but I'm totally new to BOINC as well as Gridcoin so don't want to shoot myself in the foot by starting with the wrong version.  Smiley

I have the latest stable version installed in one of my miners and it works just fine so you should be good. As for the disable GPU, I've never noticed it (on the old nor the newest release) but I wouldn't say it's trying to shut projects down... it IS optional isn't it? Haha, I would just say it's for people who strictly want to use their CPU or something along those lines.

43  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Get Gridcoin on Cryptsy Petition - First BOINC COIN! on: January 06, 2014, 06:29:42 AM
+1 how can it not be there already??? madness. I don't have any right now and would quite like to get some.

Did they fix it yet so that gpu mining worked or is it still cpu for the boinc bit?

Yea it's a shame that all these clone coins get added almost instantly yet they overlook the coins that do the most. Anyway fix what part of GPU mining? The sync issue? If so yes that's been fixed Smiley

Great to have you ChasingYourDream! Gridcoin's still a work in progress but it's gone far the past two months it's been in existence. I agree, Rob does a great job of improving the coin almost on a semi-daily basis. Only if he didn't have to worry about a job atop Gridcoin imagine how far we could be lol. But hope you enjoy the project as much as the rest of its supporters do.

Limones is right btw, that's how it works with Gridcoin for now to ensure that no one cheats out of using BOINC

How long does it take a deposit to go through?
During night ~8 hours, other times 1-8 hrs Smiley

Cool, thanks! Just want to make sure it's not taking abnormally long lol, though I do understand it's manually verified and added.

People having issues with guiminer... do you have guiminer running inside the client or separately? I have it running inside the client's Mining Console and it hasn't given me a problem yet.

So if you're running it outside, do this to run it in the Mining Console. Just make a copy of your guiminer folder, and put it into your AppData\Roaming\Gridcoin folder and make sure its named guiminer.

If you're running it inside the client and it's giving you problems, have you tried executing it separately? I know when Gridcoin starts up, it closes any instances of guiminer already running but I think if you open guiminer while Gridcoin is already running it should be fine.

I uninstalled then did the fresh install, went into my roaming folder and cleared out the old files except for my conf and wallet.
Now when it tries to sync it gets about 10 days away and then it says something about a block chain snapshot and starts syncing from 9 weeks all over again. It loops this repeatedly.

Any way to stop it?

edit: Is this because my slow internet takes 20 minutes or more to sync and the client thinks it has failed?

You can try this. Go back to the previous version you were using, let that sync, and then do a fresh install but don't delete the roaming folder files. When I upgraded I kept the old block and chainstate folders and it seems to be doing fine.

If a fork creates useless coins how exactly do they get confirmations? I could see the confirmations counting down on the coins, and then the maturity countdown. It's essentially showing them as valid even though they were garbage once a new sync was performed.

It's happened to me a few times as well lol, so I know how you feel seeing them all disappear. And they show up as getting confirmed because when you get forked, the forked chain becomes the "real" chain, so each time you find a new block, it confirms the previous ones. It's totally unaware that it's on the wrong chain so it goes on as normal.

Less than 5051250.

There are 33675 blocks when I wrote this, but the thing is the reward goes from 5 - 150 GRC. 5 GRC if the person who finds the block isn't running BOINC, and 6 - 150 depending if BOINC utilization is at 100% when block is found. Usually that amount is 150 though. But yea, there have been a lot of blocks found with less than a 150 reward though, and the 5051250 amount is granted that each reward was 150 GRC

If you fork what you need to do is delete the blocks and chainstate folders in your \AppData\Roaming\Gridcoin folder. And relaunch the client.

Do you have an AV? Try excluding the folder that contains your Gridcoin files, reinstall, and try opening it again
56  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: December 13, 2013, 06:50:34 PM
I occasionally get that. Just delete the blocks and chainstate folder as well as your peers file in \AppData\Roaming\Gridcoin and let it redownload the blockchain. Takes about 5 minutes but it'll be caught up again after that.

Did that but it seems i lost an unconfirmed block that I had mined :-(

If you lost it, it means that it hadn't been taken into the chain. Since you got left behind, you may have found that while you were lagging so when you caught back up to the chain, it deleted that block since it wasn't finding it now that you caught up.

Gridcoin although a good idea looks to me quite a failure because its extremely easy not to use boinc and still get coins by misleading that you are using it..

Please explain in detail how one could do this.  I bet you cannot.  This is a lie perpetrated by other coin devs and trolls.

Let me add that there are measures in place to prevent hacking the BOINC utilization reading. I'm not saying it's impossible, but all I've been seeing is talk telling people it's easy to hack yet no one has proof that they've done so.

When the time comes that someone does, I'll admit I supported a coin that was easily taken advantage of, but until then in my eyes, the Gridcoin's BOINC link is perfectly secure.
