41  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Gliph - Secure Messaging and Bitcoin Transfers on iOS, Android and the Web on: August 30, 2013, 06:25:23 AM
This is a rather unique and interesting project. I've downloaded it and will give it a go this evening.
I look forward to your feedback. Thank you for checking it out.

I've tried this out a few times and think it is one of the most user friendly ways to communicate securely with others. Is it possible for you to release some sort of web client for this? The web app is annoying to use within that small virtual iPhone window, the phone app is good though.
Thank you for trying out Gliph. We try to achieve great communications experience while doing our best to preserve security and privacy.

The web client is pretty rough right now. :L I do most of the Support Gliph from it, and I wish it was way better. We nearly got this updated a few months ago, but we have wanted to focus on Bitcoin exclusively until we've got some great Bitcoin wallets to choose from.

Someone from the Gliph community released a Gliph for Desktop Chrome extension that changes the desktop web. We communicated with the author of this extension but we do not support this, so use at your own risk.

We will be providing a desktop web update, but I don't have a release date at this time.

What makes this a secure messaging platform?
Thanks for asking.

Privacy is one of our core beliefs. We created a privacy policy to demonstrate this. Part of providing privacy means preventing your data from being snooped on.

Gliph secures data in ways that most other messaging clients (like Whatsapp, GroupMe and Kik) do not. There are also options out there that are a better fit for high security needs (like certain implementations of PGP and OTR).

With Gliph, conversations and personal data are encrypted by SSL over the wire. This information is then encrypted in memory using your password and AES-256. We have an option that renders your account and data unrecoverable without your personal password.

Our team is motivated to offering a great messaging experience, too. This means Gliph supports apps for the mobile web (HTML5), Android and iPhone.

We also have a variety of features for the privacy and security conscious user you might want to check out:

I hope that helps answer your question. I'd be happy to talk further about this, my email is: rob | gli.ph.

Thanks for the updates, Rob. Please keep the details coming.

I'm not in the USA. As far as I can tell, coinbase is US-only at the moment.

I think this means Gliph will not be much use to me for a while, other than the potential for an email cloak.

This is only true if you need to use Coinbase to exchange money into Bitcoin.

Most folks here already have Bitcoin in a wallet. That means, no matter where in the world you are, you can still create a Coinbase account and then send Bitcoin to that wallet using its Receive Bitcoin feature.

You simply can not use Coinbase's exchange system to get Bitcoin in.  You can still use BIPS, Mt. Gox, etc.

Once you have put Bitcoin in a Coinbase wallet (through transfer or exchange) The Gliph app is useful to you in sending bitcoin with other Gliph users.

...Yours is structured differently for sure, but can you offer some reassurance as to what happens in the unlikely event of a water landing your company going under some day? Could a user carry on with minimal disruption?
We also use Cloaked Email for important subscriptions and communications on the interent. So we are aware of the potential impact shutting such a service down would have.  I can vouch for the company doing everything possible not to abandon our users and leave them unable to receive their email.

Just the same, I understand reasonable concern around the fact that Gliph is still an early company. If there is a service or communication that you absolutely must guarantee will persist without any re-configuration, you may want to provide that person or service an actual email address.

I believe you can create a wallet on Coinbase with just an email address and password.

If you are very concerned about privacy, you may need to provide more if you want to move USD into and out of the service. You could create a Coinbase account and move money into that wallet from another and you should be good to go.

Currently, Coinbase does send an email to the person you send bitcoin to with your account email address.

For privacy, we also recommend when you sign up for Coinbase that you do not use a personal or work email address. Instead use a Cloaked Email address, (an email privacy service Gliph provides), or a different throw away account.

so you can only connect with other Glyph users?
Yes, in order for our team to offer the mix of user experience and security we aim for, both people must be Gliph users.

isn't Coinbase a centralized location with all your identity info?
Coinbase is also centralized, but does not necessarily have your identity information.

Gratz on your app, it looks cool! I been trying it out.
Thank you. And thanks for trying it out. Please send feedback to the Support Gliph!

Rob, if you're reading this, thanks - is your app subpoena-proof, as it were? Can some "authority" make you reveal message contents under duress? I see "Your personal data is your property, and you own it in accordance with our privacy policy" in your FAQs, but of course the devil is in the whatsit. More specifically, what would have happened, hypothetically if Manning and Assange had used Gliph to communicate?
Hey there. A key message here is that we offer the ability to turn off password reset, thereby removing the ability to decrypt your private key without your password. There are many reasons we offer this, including to allow privacy from our team (and future team members) and to ensure that in the unlikely event we lose control of your data (for any reason) you can be assured it remains private.

Can you say a few words about who your target market is and how you plan to make Gliph's adoption as large as it can be?
Despite Gliph's hard angle on privacy and security and more specific use case today, our target audience is mainstream smart phone users. Our intention is to make it as useful and cared about as any existing communications tool out there.

I was thinking just booster draft the Return to Ravnica block, which recently had its 3rd set, Dragon's Maze, released:  http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Products.aspx

No need to bring your own cards.  Vague understanding of the rules would be helpful.

I have a feeling we'll be pretty busy at the conference but I would still be down to play. I'd pre-pay in BTC if you pick up the necessary packs. Part of the reason I want to play is to celebrate MTG's special relationship with BTC.  Grin

Why not. I would be down to play, though all my cards are super old.

I would probably need a deck and to train up on what is new.
52  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Bitcoin Folks: Ask Your Congressperson to Advocate for Bitcoin on: April 26, 2013, 05:21:53 PM
Probably more effective to ask if you can contribute to their campaign using Bitcoin.

They like getting money.
That's a terrific idea.  I'll edit the top post.  Very curious to hear feedback from BTC community members who do this.  I have written my congressmen and will share the response here.
53  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / US Bitcoin Folks: Ask Your Congressperson to Advocate for Bitcoin on: April 26, 2013, 04:36:50 PM
Want to expand your Bitcoin advocacy? Apart from sharing the benefits of the currency with people you meet, you can also help shape the national dialog around Bitcoin as well.

Consider writing your congressperson and asking that they familiarize themselves with Bitcoin and that they advocate against regulation that would stifle alternative currencies. In addition, you may want to ask if you can make a political contribution via Bitcoin.

It isn't hard, has no age restrictions and can be very satisfying:

Step one: Look up your full Zip Code (XYZPD-ABCD) on the US Postal web page.

Step two: Find the representative for your congressional district using the above zip code.

Step three: Click on the Contact Me link on your rep's web page.

Often members of Congress, or their staff will take the time to personally reply to letters from their constituents. This is an opportunity to work within the existing political structure and have your voice heard.

Use these steps to ensure you are contacting your actual representative, as often they will not reply to constituents outside their districts.

What, if any, effect would the endorsement of a major hollywood celebrity have on the USD / BTC exchange?

Dank looking shrimp...
Thanks. I talked to the guy selling the shrimp. He does pc rigs as a hobby and has a been a miner for some time.

He said no one had bought shrimp using BTC yet, but that he'd continue to offer it as a payment method nonetheless.

Hey, this didn't get much comment here, but it did get picked up by Digg!

It is on the front page of that site right now. Pretty fun.

Also, here's a photo of the shrimp you can buy with Bitcoin.

59  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Stuff You Can Buy with Bitcoin on Craigslist on: April 08, 2013, 11:03:16 AM
Given the recent rise in value and interest in Bitcoin, I thought it would be cool to make a snapshot of what was for sale on Craigslist from people accepting BTC.

Los Angeles seems to have the most different sellers and I thought it was cool Portland, Oregon has aquarium shrimp for BTC this morning.

Austin, Texas has two types of fertilized chicken eggs. Smiley All the listings were offering Bitcoin as an alternative to dollars. But in one example in San Francisco, someone is only taking crypto currencies.

Here's my blog entry with the list: Things you Can Buy Today with Bitcoin on Portland’s Craigslist

I was impressed with the variety of things already available on Craigslist in exchange for Bitcoin.  It seems like there has been a fair amount of growth since midway last year.

Is anyone actively listing stuff on Craigslist for BTC or had a successful sale doing so?

An interesting story, still. Was there evidence in the thread of the holdings? I didn't see it.
