41  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [masterpool.eu] Merged Mining - Proportional - US/EU MIS - 1% Fee on: October 10, 2011, 05:59:25 AM
Hey Nodemaster,
Do you think some large pool is secretly merged mining?
According to http://dot-bit.org/tools/nextDifficulty.php,the network is over 500 gH/s strong.

I would say something like that is happening I see too many solved blocks going by that don't show up on the stats page of the three pools I know doing the merged.

Deepbit is probably doing some merged mining. I just sense it. Or BTCguild etc.

Damn scammers !!! Who knows how long they have been doing it for as well etc.

I know of some pools who are trying to implement merged mining. However ATM there are some perfomance issues that even MasterPool suffers from at about 50GHash/s for which I have workarounds in place but it needs to be fixed permanently. Not to mention that MasterPool architecture was designed to deal with this splitted blockchains stuff from the beginning. Everybody is working right now lowering the foot print of merged mining. You have to understand that big pools optimized their complete architecture for mining one blockchain. Now they have an additional blockchain, merged mine proxy and additional calculations in their backend. It feels like hitting a concrete wall with a jet  Grin The problem is you CAN'T simulate large load easily on testnet. Thus I guess some pools are turning it on occasionally in order to make sure merged mining optimizations are working properly turning it off if they gathered enough data to do the next optimization iteration. So please don't panic and wait a few days.

^Thanks for that,my transactions have not updated at Masterpool for the past 6 hours or so and was trying to find out what the issue was as it seemed to be working alright earlier in the day.

From my point of view the pool is working without a problem. Please send me your user ID or username via PM. I'll have a look into it.

Edit: This is the last scheduled payout (last night): http://explorer.dot-bit.org/tx/67041. Of course you can always choose to do an instant payout (However payout fee will be 2 instead of 1%)

getting a javascript error on the dashboard:
Security error: attempted to read protected variable: open

using latest Opera on Windows 7

Thank you for that hint. Unfortunately I have no testing environment at hand. But I'll have a look into it. Would you mind testing if it is possible to (de)activate worker notifications in your dashboard? This is the ony JS which is only used on that page. This would help me figuring out the error.

trying to connect to http://US01.masterpool.eu:8888/ and it's not working with my username/password

Have you tried EU01 instead? M8R still sieges the US server with his botnet. Getwork requests are very slow from time to time.

Please update so that https://www.masterpool.eu/jsonstats shows statistics for BTC.  Currently shows only zeros.  Thanks.

 Huh Thank you for raising this issue. I'm on it!

It's fixed: https://masterpool.eu/jsonstats

Thanks again for reporting this issue!
Yes, thank you.  Unfortunately, I don't know enough Python/json api to differentiate between the NMC "shares" and BTC "shares".  Falling back to trial and error coding ...  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Here is a pretty neat tool for formatting JSON: http://jsonformatter.curiousconcept.com/ Just load https://masterpool.eu/jsonstats there. IMHO this makes it much easier to understand how to iterate through the data:

{
   "workers":79,
   "hashrate":"22.53",
   "blockchains":{
      "NMC":{
         "shares":"34803",
         "stales":1117,
         "roundduration":7489
      },
      "BTC":{
         "shares":"46267",
         "stales":1542,
         "roundduration":27818
      }
   },
   "updated":1318082048
}

In most programming languages there are functions to convert JSON into an array.

I'll activate it by hand as soon as I got some sleep and the DDoS settles.

You deserve some sleep, but "waiting for a DDoS to settle" can take 1 hour, 1 week, or 1 eternity.
Don't rely on it to stop, be proactive.

Yeah, I guess I'll come up with something like slush implemented on his pool. It's really neat. Only allow connections from known users. But I'll do it later  Grin
49  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [masterpool.eu] merged mining NMC/BTC - Proportional - US/EU MIS - ETA mid oct on: October 08, 2011, 01:47:31 AM
ATM it doesn't make any sense to mine on the pool. We have 80k+ incoming connections from a Botnet. Unfortunately I have no possibility at hand to filter the connections (as they are coming from several IP addresses). For that reason I'll shut down the mining ingress servers. Unfortunately this means you can not mine on MasterPool. But we need the hashing power on NMC blockchain and I just hope most miners have configured a fallback and will be switching to another pool.

MasterPool will be back as soon as the storm is over (and I got some sleep).

The complete roundup can be found on NMC Forum: http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2110#p2110

I disabled automatic merged mining activation as I don't want to start it without having an eye on it under this circumstances  Undecided I'll activate it by hand as soon as I got some sleep and the DDoS settles.

hi nodemaster,

i really like your pool. it's one of the fastest right now (0.02% stales constant is very good!).

but please consider another payout system (or make a vote).

i do prefer *PPS - but only reason is that i dont like the idea of some shares getting worthless.

Sorry for the way too late answer. But it seems I managed to disable notifications for this thread  Undecided I already answered you question regarding payout system some time ago via PM. If merged mining started succesfully and is stable for some time I'll let all users vote.

However (and IIRC this was not answered in PM) unfortunately I won't offer PPS. I know this is very popular demand but I'm not willing to take the risk. I'll provide a fully fledged and hopefully rock solid BTC pool, but the main intention is to strengthen the namecoin blockchain. As you might know NMC is not really a currency like bitcoin (at least not forever. However at the moment it seems like). It's ONLY there to "bootstrap" the naming system stuff and is destroyed over time (unlike bitcoins). Merged Mining and MasterPool is one thing to make sure name resolution and registering is still possible if all NMC are gone some day. However this will be at the time where the block reward is no longer existant at BTC network as well (or it is very low and the share is determined from the TX fees). At that time it will be very hard to estimate a PPS value. I know this is long time. But MasterPool is here to stay for long time and so is its design. BTW: This is the reason why MasterPool also distributes the TX fees among its miners as there will be a time where only transaction fees are left for distribution  Tongue

Thus I don't see any possibility for PPS  Sad
53  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Thoughts and questions on BTC Pools and merged mining on: September 20, 2011, 04:59:47 PM
There is a major lack of coherent communication in regards to merged mining.  I'm willing to implement it if there were some central location that information were able to be found... but so far you have to comb through various posts and forums that are disjointed and inaccurate.

But as of right now, it seems that the only information that I have found is that it's unstable, untested and almost unusable without a lot of trial and error.

Could you please tell me which information about merged mining you are missing? I really did my best to gather all information on dot-bit Wiki (http://dot-bit.org/Merged_Mining). IMHO merged mining is not an arcane art. Just patch bitcoind, install latest namecoind and connect them with merged mine proxy. Point an existing pushpoold to merged mine proxy and you are done. For a pool you have to adapt your frontend and backend scripts of course, but this has to be done by each pool operator. Perhaps I became blinkered in my work. Thus please let me know which information is needed, I'll do my best to add it to the Wiki. Furthermore I'm going to review it in order to reflect the latest status of the project.
54  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Thoughts and questions on BTC Pools and merged mining on: September 19, 2011, 07:04:06 PM
nmcbit statement:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33612.msg532815#msg532815

it just seems that merged mining is a closed thing at the moment....so i suggest you all to move to masterpool right now...

nodemaster (if you read this): would you mind to help other pools with this? i am pretty sure they will honor it.

From what I can tell. Merged mining indeed is working. https://alpha.masterpool.eu mined several blocks on testnet. There were some perfomance issues. However I didn't have the time to test vinceds last patch (https://github.com/vinced/namecoin/commit/3c704cd6abdb0f836ea4ea9e5323a7875af10cc9#contrib/merged-mine-proxy). It seems he fixed the problem why we found way too less blocks on AUX chain. Thus before I tell something wrong I'd like to test the new version. For that reason I recommissioned http://alpha.masterpool.eu. The poor server is a bit messed up because of its hibernation (some stats are missing others like contributors are running in "history" mode) but mining works and you should see the generated blocks being verified at: https://alpha.masterpool.eu/statistics under Unconfirmed Blocks

Please give me the time to mine a few blocks with the new version before I say anything wrong  Grin

Furthermore there are already other pools implementing merged mining (including big BTC ones) but IMHO its up to them to announce it. From what I know officially DavinciJ15 from http://nmcbit.com is trying to implement merged mining right now. And the guys from p2pool announced they'll integrate merged mining as well IIRC.

Edit:

Yes, I'm willing to help every person who is able to run a pool on his own and has the technical knowledge about how merged mining should work. But please I won't waste my time on giving "Mining pool for Dummies"-Workshops. My family already forgot about my face because of being on NMC projects all day  Cheesy Furthermore If you have questions regarding merged mining I'd like to kindly ask to join on http://dot-bit.org forum. I know, it is PITA to switch bulletin boards, and I don't like it as well. But most knowledge about merged mining is concentrated on NMC forum. It seems on BTC forum I'm regarded as the ultimate merged mining guy. But that's not true. There are other much smarter people over on NMC forum  Grin
55  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: NameCoin Mining pool Open for the Brave [20+ GHs] .00003BTC/share on: September 18, 2011, 09:57:26 AM
Those name coins are mine

Just wanted to hear that. You are greedy like hell  Grin

I guess I should have kept that under my hat but Slush was also involved so I believed them both.

I have a copy of our conversation but I will keep that safe and sound.  The experience was educational and it was good for me because I a trusting kind of person.  It's not their fault that I am a gullible guy that can be easily fooled.

However!

If you know anything about bitcoin network you would know it would take more than just one person with a bad nodes to be able to mine a bad block chain and I had 12 connections to other bad nodes. Also if my bad node connects to enough good nodes my client would stop working with an error, thus the opposite is also true.

With that said I'm sure anyone with an IQ higher than mine can figure what's really going on, also I don't want to accuse anyone of anything unless I have hard evidence.

Thus, NodeMasters story of a "misunderstanding" is he official story like the 9/11 report. Wink

Haha! Please take your medicine  Grin
56  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: NameCoin Mining pool Open for the Brave [20+ GHs] .00003BTC/share on: September 17, 2011, 07:09:05 PM
NodeMaster,

I can tell you know that not all the NMC will or have to leave that wallet.

Davinci gave the miners a choice to mine NMC or BTC. So he would get a lot of miners to help him mine NMC even though they couldn't care less about NameCoins.

I personally choose for BTC which came out of his own pocket (even when we were mining on a fork of the original chain) so as far as I am concerned Davinci doesn't owe me any NMC. He can keep them to partially offset his BTC expense.

I hope that everyone can look past the misunderstandings and the animosity of the past week.

I can understand there has been a lot of stress, but I hope that the developers and the pool operators can come together and go forward and onward with merged mining !

Thank you very much for this information DutchBrat and thank you very much for supporting the NMC community. I'm pretty sure DavinciJ15 will find a fair and very honest way to distribute all those coins to the miners. If someone like you don't want to get those coins then the other miners have their lucky day. He could pay them all a bit more. As DavinciJ15 always accentuated how honest he is I'm pretty sure there won't be any coin left on this address after the end of next week, right?
57  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: NameCoin Mining pool Open for the Brave [20+ GHs] on: September 17, 2011, 06:13:33 PM
With that said 533,484 shares where mined on the other block chain.  Just in case you did not know 50 / 94035.90217415 (the difficulty) is a good per share price.

So you want to tell me you made about 5.7 blocks with your 40GHash/s handbrake pool on a blockchain which in total made 11 blocks, while one block was found by my pool and a "few" by a 2 THash/s pool? Roll Eyes Is it possible that while manually tinkering with the sources, because you didn't even know how to apply a patch you found a hidden accellerator by accident?  Grin Or are this all shares (including stales). As your pool constantly has > 20% stales I could imagine that this is the discrepancy. But nevermind I don't want to waste my time with you anymore. I think your good friend BitcoinEXpress was right, when he wrote the following on the NMC forum:

Quote
As someone with as limited knowledge as you have in MySQL, Linux and Pool operations I will simply overlook you as being frustrated.

Just make sure those coins are distributed to all your miners that didn't know about you being stupid enough going on mining on the wrong blockchain:

http://explorer.dot-bit.org/a/NEcNy1f8XuSN79dkA1JMcyVeZ2FeKHJ3JU

We'll watch closely if all those coins will leave the wallet from that address to their respective owners.

To DavinciJ15s miners: I'm sorry for littering this thread but the attitude of Davincij15 just pisses me off. I want to thank you all for your commitment mining on his pool when your help was needed desperately. I'm quite confident 283.65974466 NMC is much more than DavinciJ15s pool had mined on the wrong blockchain. But as it will be distributed to you I'm more than fine with it. Thank you very much again!
58  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: NameCoin Mining pool Open for the Brave [20+ GHs] on: September 17, 2011, 12:30:48 PM
How much blocks did you loose? I'm willing to refund. Just let me know how much NMC that was.
Did you scam me? I don't know for sure.

Check my stats and YOU decide how much you owe me if anything.

NEcNy1f8XuSN79dkA1JMcyVeZ2FeKHJ3JU

People can see your sincerity here...
http://explorer.dot-bit.org/a/NEcNy1f8XuSN79dkA1JMcyVeZ2FeKHJ3JU

Davincij. NO ONE scammed you. I'll try it to explain last time. We splitted the blockchain as outlined on: http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=308. We invited you in secrecy to attend the split in order to not let you mine on the wrong blockchain as soon as vinced announce the split. As we went into trouble everybody but you rolled back. Instead you started telling everybody about the still secret blockchain split. With this behaviour and with posting parts of the confidential IRC logs you pissed off a lot of people. And the next time such things happen a few people will think twice if it is possible to let you in on such plans and decisions (But hopefully it won't ever be nessecary again). I think you are an honest person but you just even didn't recognize these facts. Thus I thought it might be best to let you know.

With that said let's come to the point of refund:

I feel like the members of your pool should be paid for their hashing power. They all came to help when you asked them to and when NMC community was in desperate need for their help. Unfortunately we had been naive enough to imply that any pool operator would understand the fundamentals of running a mining pool und thus neglected to tell you in detail which steps you have to go through. For that reason I feel I owe something to your miners not to you. Nevertheless you are the only one with the possibility to find out how much it was and thus a last time I ask you:

1. Find out how many blocks you have mined on the wrong blockchain (I can't do that with the stats from your site!).
2. Tell me the value of the accumulated blocks and I'll transfer it.
3. Do the math for your miners as like you would have paid out these blocks (Just use the same algorithm between the found blocks for the shares they submitted).
4. Transfer their share to the miners in question.

If you still don't understand what I'm asking for please let me know.

As Davincij also reverted the current merged mining start is still 19200. Perhaps Davincij won't mind to post a link to MasterPools stats site. There is a countdown. It should be acurate. But keep in mind that we live in weird time ATM  Tongue
60  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: NameCoin Mining pool Open for the Brave [20+ GHs] on: September 15, 2011, 08:17:59 PM
Are you already back on original blockchain? please confirm?!

Yes.

Phew. Good to know  Grin

I wrote a roundup of the 51% attack countermeasure: http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=308&p=2003#p2003

I'm really sorry. That this was a misunderstanding. It seemed you missed the point where we reverted to the original blockchain. I apologize if we didn't make it clear enough. It was neither my intention to lie at you nor was it my intention to lure you into mining the wrong blockchain. I really hope you understand that?!

How much blocks did you loose? I'm willing to refund. Just let me know how much NMC that was.
