What are Bitcoins?
How can such simple question be so hard to answer succinctly? Recently the Bitcoin wikipedia article read, in part,
"Bitcoin is a decentralized electronic cash system using peer-to-peer networking, digital signatures and cryptographic proof to enable irreversible payments between parties without relying on trust."
While that answer is correct, I think if I gave that answer to 99.99% of the people who ask me "What is Bitcoin?", I'd instantly turn them off. Surely we can come up with something short, simple, intriguing that is mainly correct if not 100% correct. Add your answer to this thread.
I'll start this thread with a few tries:
Like cash, only better.
Like digital gold.
A new type of digital money.

It's sluggish sometimes for me, usually during price spikes.

wtf. hope they get back on their feet ASAP!
The site looks up to me. To what are you referring?

On CampBX there are 375 BTC offered at $5.31. Currently $5.509 Bid on Mt Gox. That looks like a nice buy at $5.31 on CampBX if you have some USD on CampBX or can move some quickly from Dwolla.

It looks like CampBX is coming to life a little bit. There is a seller offering 432 BTC at $5.31 right now. That's a good buy if you have money in CampBX or some that you can move quickly from Dwolla. I like CampBX, it's good to see them trade a little bit of volume.

In many countries, converting fiat currency to BTC and vice-versa is a problem. What's the best answer? Just use Bitcoin. If you can convince someone to accept Bitcoin as payment for a good or service then you don't have to worry about converting BTC to fiat. However, until that happens there will be the problems of converting BTC to fiat currency.

My account is all correct. The BTC deposit was credited to my account. Thanks to the guys at TradeHill for straightening in out and their good communication.
|
|
|
An estimate from TradeHill would be nice as to when we can expect to see the BTC credited to our TradeHill accounts (1 day, 2 days, 5 days, etc)?
|
|
|
I just got this edited message from TradeHill "No worries, I have logged this for our programmers. The sent transaction is our SOP which moves the BTC inter-TradeHill to keep them from sitting on your static address. We'll get the X BTC credited correctly." It's looking better. At least I'm getting good communication from TradeHill. Now all I need are some BTC

I look in BlockExplorer and I see where my deposit was RECEIVED by my TradeHill bitcoin address. TradeHill then says new deposits are being processed properly now and they are working to fix the errant deposits. OK. I wait awhile. And I look in BlockExplorer again and I see something that concerns me. The total BTC that I deposited to my TradeHill bitcoin address has now been split into 2 amounts and SENT to 2 other addresses. I did not authorized these transfers. Can anybody think of a legitimate reason for me to see this in blockexplorer? I'm a bit worried.
65 Hours after I sent my BTC to be deposited into my TradeHill account, still nothing there. An update from TradeHill would be nice. Worried and waiting.

Just one more day! I can feel the excitement building!

My BTC from a trade on November 15th that never settled was finally unfrozen. I was starting to get a bit concerned.
|
|
|
I requested 2 withdrawals on Saturday. One went through right away. The other sat for over 24 hours. When I inquired about it Mt Gox then sent it out. Good thing I wasn't in a hurry.

The only contact information that I have is the email address admin@bitmarket.euDoes anyone have any other contact information (phone number, skype name, IM ID, other email address, physical address, etc)?

I don't like that they've removed the "Depth of Market" feature. On my wish list is a "Time and Sales" feature too.

I've got some BTC frozen from trades I made on November 15th. I have not received a response from the buyer, which happens often at BitMarket. I have contacted BitMarket support to cancel the trades and unfreeze my BTC but I haven't heard anything. It's been about a week. Anybody else having trouble getting a response from them or can shed some light on the situation at BitMarket.eu?

One work-around would be for the exchanges to use have 2 versions of their website, one for regular computers and one for mobile devices. Google and Yahoo both have mobile versions which automatically load on an iOS device in the Safari browser. I'd like to see the exchanges do the same. I know Mt Gox has a mobile app but it only works on jail-broken devices. With this work-around the exchanges don't have to get Apple's approval and the mobile version should work on many small screen mobile devices, not just iOS devices.

Anybody know what's going to happen soon at Mt Gox? Is Mt Gox finally getting a face-lift?
