I don't know where you are, but it is likely that there are regulations that will get in the way of you just erecting an enormous wind turbine in your back yard. Your neighbors aren't going to want a 24/7 small helicopter running next door.
402  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Idea to go GPU and not FPGA on: February 04, 2012, 12:45:09 AM
If going for solar power makes financial sense for mining, it makes financial sense without mining and you should do it anyway.

This is super wrong. You need to have consumption large enough to amortize the cost of the solar system over the life of the system (including service, batteries, and inverters) and still come out cheaper than grid rates. Below a certain threshold, that ain't happening.
403  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: EclipseMC - Best pool ever but... on: February 04, 2012, 12:17:11 AM
I have looked into doing other currencies.  The problem with that is I have to maintain a balance with Paypal with every currency I want to use... I actually have the code in place to payout in other currencies, but I've been debating on whether or not I want to tie up so much money in Paypal just keeping a balance for the time someone MIGHT use it for another currency.

It's not that I don't want to or don't like other currencies, I would love to payout in every currency possible, but Paypal makes it exceedingly difficult.  Couple that with the fact that Paypal freezes accounts arbitrarily and I am loathe to keep a meaningful balance of any kind with them.  Besides, I am also loathe to give them an interest free loan just sitting in their accounts.

It's not for lack of desire or awareness, Paypal just makes it exceedingly difficult.

This is a pretty convenient service, Inaba. I'm not certain why that guy is bitching...I don't know of any bank in the whole world that doesn't accept USD.

I really miss mining at this pool...

Turning that buffer around Cheesy
If only it were that easy... But unless BT starts maintaining the pool again, I won't have the same kind of trust in the pool as I used to.

AND, that negative buffer is huge! Tongue

In full swing, we were finding like, 3-4 blocks a day and at one point, I am pretty sure the buffer was well over 2000. A run like that could turn it around pretty quick. Makes it a little harder with only a third of the hashing power we had then, but it's possible.

Wild speculations without any proof.

What are you talking about? No proof? As if a photo isn't enough...

Oooo, the dark net. That must be bad? Roll Eyes

No just dark.  You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

I would recommend bringing a lantern when visiting the dark net.

A lantern, and a gun. You can find one here: http://<i>Linking to illegal sites is forbidden. If you bypass this censorship, you will be banned.</i>.onion/index.php
Whoa! Now we've got censorship of some illegal web site! Sweet. And people suggest BTC is all for illegal and nefarious purposes....

Illegal sites? I didn't know information was against world law...

408  Economy / Speculation / Re: Silk Road sale.... BTC explosion. on: February 03, 2012, 08:14:51 PM
... Silk Road has one of the largest (if not the largest) BTC market. ...

I can't imagine that being true.
Like the overwhelming majority of bitcoin peers I have met, I would not even consider using SR.
They are a drop in the bucket. Of course neither you nor I would know how much business they traffic.

It has existed longer than the overwhelming majority of bitcoin businesses. It would take very little daily volume to get the top spot. What are they competing with? Fucking alpaca socks? Coffee? People like drugs more.

The bitcoin community isn't using silkroad, the silkroad community is using bitcoin. Big BIG difference.
409  Economy / Speculation / Re: Silk Road sale.... BTC explosion. on: February 03, 2012, 07:27:29 PM
Cool. So now drugs on silk road are only 90% more expensive than the street...

1.1btc for a friggin' norco? I could be a btc millionaire.

I just watched the documentary Thrive and I think that Satoshi must be an alien!    Shocked

Does the bitcoin network have any properties that could be related to the shape of a
torus?   Grin

j/k

That doc should make bitcoiners happy since it suggests people, to help wake up and
free themselves, to start using alternatives currencies, among other things.

Bitcoin was planned by aliens long before we even dreamed about things like that.
Here is the video recorded before 2005 and posted on youtube in 2009:

I hope you are joking....this guy is an alien reptilian believer lol....  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny8ROj-HvVo&feature=related

That is fucking awesome.

I'm about to click that link based on Randy's recommendation, only. This shit better be good or there's goin' to be hell to pay. Don't make me fire up 'Nikki the Bitch'.

EDIT: I should've known it was about food if Randy liked it. Pretty neat concept. Just like White Castle embracing the Slider tag, which BTW I purchased a case yesterday in DeKalb, IL. Guess which room of my home I'm typin' this in. Hint: I'm setting down.

Oh, did you get yourself a cardboard briefcase of burgers?

Or... a hang gliding go-kart!  Hell yeah!

Oh, OH, with thin film solar covering the wings and fleetstar/navstar internet and a few BFL boards hashing away while you fly circles around RandyFolds!

Very big circles.

It might be orbiting at that point...

Randy has acquired a satellite!

On a decaying orbit into my mouth. Nom nom nom

So is this pool still good to go considering it's in the negative?  If I mine then try to cash out it'll just put in a long queue where others are ahead of me waiting for theirs?

It isn't that you are put in a queue, it is that you receive a proportionate share from each block mined. Essentially, you'll be paid out slower than you are earning it, but it's not that you have to wait for 20 blocks and everyone else to get paid before you get your piece.
Are you sure about that?

Pool Unpaid: 1236.58970848 BTC

Yes.

Also, someone who actually cares should request thermal images of the BFL boards, similar to those shown by some...ahem...more professional FPGA entities.

See this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=40058.msg710994#msg710994

Well fuck, thanks Randy.  I think you may have just given me a reason to buy an IR camera that I have been wanting, but have had absolutely no reason to actually buy, for like forever.  You are costing me money you fuck.

I am expense-trolling you, Inaba. You might need a hang glider as well...

Those were from someone that ordered the board, not from the manufacturer. Although it would be awesome if they had a camera and would share the pics.

I was too distracted by wanting a sweet IR camera to worry about reading the posts. Come on, now.

I am too lazy at the moment, but someone should do the exact math on how much return on investment has been sacrificed by a pre-order customer.  Ostensibly they could have taken the $600 bucks and purchased actually available products and earned a decent return by now.

Whats the most hashing power someone can aquire for $600 bucks?

I will start....
Used mobo/CPU combo:  $100
RAM:  $20
Linux run from USB:  $10
decent PSU:  $80
Used 5970:  $325-350
Used 5770: $65

So, they could have aquired 900 MH/s, and given the low difficulty during December, I figure they could have mined 22 BTC per month.  That is 88 BTC over the time since pre-orders began.

That is one HELL of an opportunity cost.

lol

I think we're just jealous that we don't have zero interest loans for indefinite periods.
