There is nothing in this world that isn't compromisable, this is just something you have to come to terms with. Bitcoin won't be around forever, but it's working great at the moment.

Don't worry, It's not a real encyclopaedia :p

Do they really exist anymore? Encyclopedia Britannica published their last print edition ever in 2010. How long will they be able to keep full time staff on board and still be profitable?
404  Other / Off-topic / Re: What is greed? on: September 29, 2012, 06:41:11 AM
Not greed, more like being lazy. I say that because they seem to be perfectly happy at a bare minimum standard of living and not hoarding the wealth. The thieves even get the government to point guns at the more productive members of society to pay up at no cost to them.
405  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is not real money. on: September 29, 2012, 06:13:59 AM
The only real criticism is that it cannot currently be exchanged as easily for other currencies around the world.

If someone uses the "because it's electronic" argument, they are stupid. Nobody thinks twice about a debit card as being real money.

Fix that title. It should read:
Quote
Nightmare! Gambling = bad.

except for the bet provider...

Only if they don't have enough money to pay out or there's a flaw in their system.
407  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox now requiring some kind of seperate Dwolla account verification? on: September 28, 2012, 07:03:38 PM
And now I'm on some kind of undeclared time delay before they'll make a deposit into my Dwolla account. Will be using fastcash4bitcoins.com in the future. Christ...

I lose as much as I win . . .
This is almost certainly not true.  It may seem like it for any small sample, but if you actually tracked all your bets, over a large number of bets you will most likely find that your total losses are a bit more than 1.9% of the total amount you have bet.

You also have to play methodically AND a whole bunch to lose that little over time. The real house advantage is that you're very likely to blow your wad before you can even get anywhere near breaking even.

I had to lose around $50k before I realized what was up.

On Satoshidice?

Nah, about 10 years ago in the real world.

Finally shows as verified when I logged in earlier. Whew.
411  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Nightmare! SatoshiDice = bad. on: September 27, 2012, 07:05:40 PM
gambling is awesome  Grin

At some point it get to be like a drug addiction. The dopamine and adrenaline rushes you get initially start to diminish, and you keep chasing that high with higher and riskier bets. I had to lose around $50k before I realized what was up. The only thing you can really do is channel your tendencies into more productive things.
412  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dear FBI, CIA, NSA, and SEC authorities on bitcointalk.org... on: September 27, 2012, 02:45:58 AM
NSA agents are required to sign an agreement to let the government tap their phone as a condition of employment

haha, poor guys. Unlike the rest of us who could never be wiretapped without a warrent...  Roll Eyes

That was my exact thought. Why would they even need to ask...
413  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox now requiring some kind of seperate Dwolla account verification? on: September 26, 2012, 09:37:24 PM
Ah, but my account was verified when I opened it earlier this year and was able to use Dwolla until this new withdrawal attempt. Still "verifying"...

Sympathy begins with asking for forgiveness after you've done something retarded.

You're right, not since April.

Thank for the link and info. It's the end of the month, and was hoping I wouldn't have to end up waiting a week...
416  Other / Off-topic / Re: "Frist Look at BFL's ASIC Hardware" on: September 26, 2012, 03:31:01 AM
So they only have basic 3d drafts done? Shouldn't they have made these designs way before they even asked for money?

Well, to give them the benefit of the doubt, kind of hard to finalize any hardware when you don't have any production chips to test your design with.
417  Other / Off-topic / Re: "Frist Look at BFL's ASIC Hardware" on: September 26, 2012, 03:29:57 AM
Maybe chips with flaws (they'll always be some in a batch) will be used for the Jally, Just like CPUs are tested then binned to run at certain speeds.
It would make sense if each chip has 4 "cores". One disabled core would give you 3.75 GH/s...
It's more likely that it's clocked slower with a lower voltage. Better power savings that way.

Enough to run off a USB bus, though? Going by BFL's proposed specs, each "full strength" chip would seem to use 10 watts/2.5 amps @5v. Not taking into account other hardware on the board, of course. Not sure you could undervolt/clock it enough. So either it will have to run off more than USB power, or it's a completely different chip.

419  Economy / Service Discussion / Mt.Gox now requiring some kind of seperate Dwolla account verification? on: September 26, 2012, 12:46:03 AM
Hmm, that's interesting. I tried to set up a withdrawal via Dwolla this afternoon (yes, I've done this before), and the screen where the regular Yubikey/Account/Amount fields were replaced with some new "add withdrawal method" feature that supposedly keeps your account data on file. It said that "verification" would take awhile, but didn't state a time period...nor could I find any information on this new "feature" or how long it might take.

 Huh
