If you are confusing terminology and thinking about "mining" and not "processing transactions"
I know the difference between mining and processing. And my friend meant exactly processing - without actually mining bitcoins. My home PC video card isn't that powerful to do mining and I don't wanna ruin it by putting it to mine. So, if there's no way to make any money by processing transactions, I have to look for other ways. I suppose I could ask a... sponsor, so to speak, to give me money to build a basic computer for mining which to join to a pool of miners. Since mining is done mostly by the video card, would that exemplary build be good for mining: GTX 1080, core i3, 750W PSU, 8GB RAM? If it can mine even 1 bitcoin per month, that would be ok for me, so that I can earn money to make more mining computers. Definitely NOT. All of the miner who are looking for profit are using ASICs and they are chips specifically designed for mining Bitcoins and nothing else. If you are not using it, you will never make any profits. There are several alt coins using POS that will allow you to earn by running a node. The incentive is too low so I really wouldn't recommend it. Depends what you run a node on and how much your power is. If you run a node with solar power( bad idea as initially costs per kw will be very high) and run it on a weak build you might get a little bit out of it. You might be able to mine a storage plotting coin that might make you a few cents but that's about it. Everything else pretty much can only be done with GPUs or ASICs, one of the two.

This miner is also available at www.eastshore.xyz including PSU, for a reasonable price. They also ask for 90USD customs declaration plus shipping, not bad considering people buy this for around 1000 on other sites. Didn't notice it included a PSU.

It's also unknown whether or not the miner control GUI supports English or not. Unless you understand Chinese it'll be a little difficult to setup the miner. Seems it's market poorly towards Western and European customers and if anything seems it's just for Chinese customers.
I dont speak any chinese and I managed to get it all setup. Miner GUIs really arent that complicated. Also, it is not marketed at all outside of China yet. I had to go to their headquarters for them to even believe I was serious about their product. They will be supplying English firmware and tools, it has already been offered to me. That's nice to know, I was afraid there might've been some more customizeable functions in the firmware that might not be as easily deciphered and those might've brought up some issues. Nice to have a competitor that actually does some work that's not Avalon or Bitmain. Wouldn't be my first choice but if they get a little better efficiency I'd be glad to try it out.

I usually hop from member to member with VPS based hosting and it usually works out quite well. I haven't been scammed yet by anyone with this kind of stuff, but make sure you buy from a reliable person if you plan on using a VPS. Most of these can be found in the services section and you can easily get a decent one or two core Xeon based VPS for around three bucks a month.

Or buy Baikal miner. It only consumes 40W. And is highly profitable now.
It'll be marginally profitable and it does support multiple algorithms but it will take a long time for you to make anything decent from the miner. If you want the most bang from your buck from Baikal if you plan on getting one, get the Giant. Everything else from them is generally not worth it; the machines they make are quiet though.

Are you talking about KncMiner? Yeah that was a disaster, at one point I was glad that there was a manufacturer right in the neighbour country but I'm glad that I stayed away after all and have bought mostly Bitmain and Canaan Creative (Avalon) gear.
No i was talking about https://products.butterflylabs.com Another company that is no longer alive apparently. It used be back then people had to wait for pre-orders while the difficulty was jumping all the time. Can't believe how much crap people come up with whatever they do. Their miners were also shit by the time they arrived, I collect them as of now just for my little USB miner collection but they're generally not the most reliable. Their monarchs were quiet and relatively nice for mining with efficiency around that of the S5 or SP20 underclocked. AMT was also a pile of shit that people never got their money back from; if you did get a miner, it was pretty much a LKETC dragon miner assembled somewhere in China and sent to wherever you lived.

Just people getting mad about losing their money because of the slight instability of bitcoin. The reality is everything has a risk to it and some people just invest unknowingly thinking it's easy money until the price of BTC falls. It's not dead, just a bunch of misinformed people.

At this time we all know what is happening. Anxciety for the ETF. The real question is what will happen if the outcome is negative? A dump? If yes to what price? postiive? A pump? If yes to what price?
Yes it could just be anxiety because that always occurs with the unknown about to happen. The price will not be settled that is the only certainty we have that is actually known for the next coming up to that major event which can either make or break bitcoin. That could be any moment now, but bitcoin rises and falls to its own accord and the general trend for the past few months so far is a steady rise. I've sold around 250 so far but I'm still holding what I have.

Solved!!!!! (nearly a year late but I hope this may help someone anyway) I cant see a solution elsewhere.
Credit also to Nezroy for pointing me in the right direction. He is correct that this is caused by the cgminer not recieving instructions for freq settings and he saved me a lot of time trawling through code.
His solution would work in theory but I believe there is a better beginner friendly way.
With the most recent firmware installed, go to the tabs, System ==> Miner configuration ==> Advanced settings. And re-select the default freq for your device. then hit "save and apply". No power reset required. This will load the missing values back in.
For those that care, I believe this is caused by the "keep settings" box being ticked on the firmware update. This causes problems for those of us that are updating from the original installed cgminer by bitmain, to the updated cgminer v4.6.1 at firmware S320141013. The OS is probably trying to import the old freq settings into the new cgminer in an incorrect format. Those that don't tick this box on firmware update probably wont have this problem as default values will be used. Those that update between versions S320141013 and S320150109 firmware also are probably not affected as cgminer versions are unchanged.
Hope this helps.
By the way, your S3 is still profitable?? I bought two of them and run them where I live. The power is included with my rent, so my only condition is that they need to run near where I sleep. The S3 is the only one that I think I can get away with the custom fans making them near silent, (Nanoxia deep silent 120mm fans). That is the reason I still run them. I would love more powerful units as power cost is not an issue, but the extra heat needs venting and thus noisy fans. I'm very glad I've had success as a hobbyist miner, which is good, not just for me but there must be others in the community that can say that taking the gamble paid off and spread the word. The details if you're interested, I bought two of them from ebay in December 2015. One for £105 as single unit. The other for £128 with corsair cs550m inc. I then spent £96 on a corsair rm750x to power them both. So spent £329. My slush pool page says my all time payout is 0.57777511BTC which right now is £548.38 so I'm up on my investment as I hodl. And I of course still have the hardware to sell if my circumstances change. tl:dr yes it's profitable, free power, but slow returns due to low power units, but silent as in close proximity to where I sleep. Nice! There's still nothing like a solid and quiet S3 in the Bitcoin world today, and there probably won't ever be one. The returns on even free power are slow but they're still fun to run ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) I've got a few running in my home simply because other miners are too loud or unreliable. There's really no alternative for me since I need the quiet in my house :/

Too bad you live so far away,I'd be happy to buy one of these if it weren't for the (probably) expensive shipping price. GLWS though, great little display units! I remember buying one of these in early 2015 and making a few pennies a day with em. Back then I got a few for around five bucks each, times have changed...
as far as I remember they are back from 2013 and I just looked up postage prices and regular mail is for about 10$ and EMS is 30$ shipping to US, it's sad. How much are you willing to pay without postage ? 10 bucks. It's nice, but i've already got one so it's not too big of a deal to me. I can get them for 20 on eBay, so it might seem like a pretty shitty price to you.

Umm that board has 4 PCIe slots and two PCI slots, so it can only do 4 GPU's. okay maybe maybe not needs testing . the biostar z170 does 4 cards well none has them doing 5 and 6 cards well the Aorus z270 from gigabyte does 5 cards well on windows 10 as tested by me the ryzen board looks nice maybe it will do 6 cards and the cpu will do a solid 500 on xmr. so it is like a 7 card rig MaybeThe cpus from amd seem costly to me lowest cost I see is 329 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113428&cm_re=amd_ryzen-_-19-113-428-_-Productamd only released the first wave of cpus that complete with intel on gaming and multitasking level 1700 is faster than a 6800k at 329$ 100$ less if i remember right the 1700 is 8 cores 16 threads which amd never has done before till now cuz intel finally sold them a lease for it it also has at tdp of 65W vs 140W these are mostly for gaming and stuff like that 6900k is $1k cpu and the 399$ 1700x beat it at cinebench Ryzen 3 is also coming soon and that should be at around 150$ if I am correct, even that will be overclockable. It won't be out for a while though and we still have no hard confirmation of the details. If anything the current Ryzen benchmarks are looking good. Dunno what they'll compare it to but it should be pretty decent.

Figured these machines were pretty reliable but not this reliable :p guess you got a good R4 going, overall I'm just happy you're getting anything with R4s. Wouldn't be surprised if the r4 mines an entire bitcoin without breaking.

Regarding HW errors:
- How long should I give my current 275MHz OC before upping the freq even more? - I have zero errors so far after a couple of hours.
My goal is 300MHz.
Thanks, all!
Depends how much power each port supplies. Depending on how much it is, a Y cable might be required to provide enough power to the ASIC. After that 300mhz+ is easily reachable provided you have the right frequency settings.

Ckpool is trustworthy and plenty of people will tell you this, honestly it's not worth the trouble of mining solo by yourself. IMO the fee is tiny and it's worth just pointing hash there instead of manually setting up everything you need just to solomine. Unless you're using some shady altcoin solomining pool, it's perfectly fine to solomine on pools. Most of the time they won't scam you.
Like CK said, there's no way to intercept a block.

My T9's are running like champs. I was able to order a few more this last time. Stayed away from the S9's.
It will be interesting to see how they handle the heat this summer in Atlanta.
It's been a warmer than average year so far so hopefully it won't get too hot, I know it was pretty warm in South Carolina last year, nothing unbearable for my miners but warmer than I'd like for optimal performance. Your miners might get louder and spin faster assuming they run pwm but that should be it.

Yeah odd name. I remember biostar first started with a 24ghs Bitcoin asic miner and they never really did much with it. Interesting motherboard, will be nice for altcoins. Honestly I'd stick with the old pro BTC as you can get real cheap lga1150 CPUs but it's really up to you. Newegg sells the old ones on eBay for $65, unsure if refurbished or new.

Considering people buy them for 20$+ on eBay and these things sell for around 17 on AliExpress, it'll be tough for you to get any. Good luck though! Just curious, what are you planning to do with these miners?
Futurebit Moonlanders work well for scrypt, as do Zeusminer Blizzards which use the same chips as the LKETC miners(overclocked in those).

Will you ever make a pool for the 2pacs or would you allow me to run my 2pac on the site? Just got mine and I don't have much to do with it so I'd be happy to compete here.
