4001  Other / Meta / Re: What can we do to stop redundant full quotes? on: October 12, 2018, 07:37:09 AM

If you remove nested quotes, then you will ruin the discussion of the thread.

Te real point is that it is a discussion thread, and not a discussion post. I don't understand why the poster has to assume that all readers have such a limited memory capability. I would assume that the majority of the serious members here are of above average intelligence, and are quite capable of following a conversation.

Of course, if the thread is so spam laden that the poster feels that he has to isolate the relevant posts, then we will need to address the spam pollution as a priority. This has already been highlighted in this thread, but until that happens, it would be great if members could not amplify the problem by quote abuse.

Reading a thread when looking for meritable posts is a bit like driving down a dual carriageway road. The vehicle in the slow lane ( normal text ) doesn't slow you down too much, and even the rubbish spam can be passed easily, much as you would pass a bicycle. Finding a block of quotes or a large image is similar to being blocked by a slow moving truck in the fast lane, you have to get it out of the way before you can move on. If a road always contains slow moving traffic, then you choose a different road in future ( ignore the board ).
4002  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A query regarding Merits specifically. on: October 11, 2018, 05:04:51 PM
I believe that merits on a deleted post should be burnt, regardless of the reason for the deletion. The associated sMerits should also be reduced if they have not been spent.
4003  Economy / Speculation / Re: How do you honestly feel about the recent bitcoin drop? on: October 11, 2018, 04:53:27 PM
I think it is great, and I'm hoping it will slip even further. I want to buy some more to add to my wallets.
4004  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Bitcointalk: decentralization, English language and hypocresy . on: October 11, 2018, 04:50:06 PM
Any community needs to have a lingua franca as a means of communication between members. Without this, it becomes a collection of communities rather than a single entity. Perhaps the greatest benefit that Brexit can give to the EU, is to allow them to implement their suggestion that English becomes the common language in their community.

Members of the sub-communities have the option of joining the broader English speaking community. This is not centralisation, but just members releasing themselves from a self-imposed restriction.
4005  Other / Meta / What can we do to stop redundant full quotes? on: October 11, 2018, 04:15:41 PM
This has been mentioned so many times, but it is still prolific, and it includes Heroes and Legendaries who really should know better.

There is no need to quote an opening post in full if you are replying in a thread, and nesting the quotes is even worse. The net result is that a reader will probably skip over your post, and not bother with your reply. This is certainly the case with me. I've even seen senior members just post the quote without adding a comment.

SMF has the option to remove nested quotes. Do you think it would be beneficial if this was implemented here?
4006  Other / Meta / Re: Old BT account names being used on other sites. on: October 11, 2018, 02:58:22 PM
There isn't really a lot of advantage in joining if you don't want to practice English, or to help others with their translation. You can't hunt for bounties, or spam TwitBook or health products. You can't earn any merits either, unless you create a topic starting post that is eligible for posting on a Bitcoin Talk board.
4007  Other / Meta / Re: I'm thinking of running a topic starting contest for non-english speakers. on: October 11, 2018, 02:52:52 PM
I want to suggest that Economy be included as a topic because an economical information of each country can be useful and interesting for us.

I've just approved you, and I bypassed activation, so you shoud be good to go.

The 5 merit thread starter is a long running project, and it is still active, so you are welcome to join that. The 25 merit bonus is a new idea, and I wanted to get the opinion of other members about it. 25 merits is more than I have ever awarded.

I agree with you suggestion about the Economy board, but economy and political are pretty close, and I wanted to support Flying Hellfish with the work he has done to clean up the political board. I haven't looked at economy for quite a while. and the last time I looked it was full of low value spam.

4009  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Brexit - Why do they call a second referendum a "people's vote" on: October 11, 2018, 02:07:28 PM
Governments don't make trade deals, companies do that. All governments do is to create barriers and impse taxes.

Prior to the referendum, there was a massive amount of publicity that stated that "Brexit was Brexit", and that we would be leaving the EU - well what a load of cock that was. The stipulated 2 year tansition period that was designed to negotiate arrangements to supplement world trade agreements has been squandered in futile attempts to create a fake exit from the bankrupt EU. It also provides a period for UK assets and wealth to continue to be removed from the country.

A person who has British grand parents is more likely to want to preserve the established culture and economy, than an immigrant with an interest in rehoming his relatives to take advantage of the prosperity and charity of the country. Obviously this is not true in all cases, but stats seem to bear out the fact. We have also had a change in the education policy in the UK ( the removal of grammar schools for example ) and a rise in the snowflake teachers who villify national identity, and ambition. This is the reason we need hard working Polish workers ( and others ), whilst we have so many lazy unemployed young Britons.
4010  Other / Meta / Re: I'm thinking of running a topic starting contest for non-english speakers. on: October 11, 2018, 11:51:17 AM
Far too many individuals have an uninformed perspective on how the system functions/should function (i.e. free transactions, larger block size, how mining works, etc.) and I believe that it is critical to make some of the knowledge more widespread. I have seen far too many people ask how signing a message works, what a node is, etc. (on this forum, no less)

I have tried running a few threads on such topics with mixed results. The idea behind this initiative is to bring new members on local boards into the main Bitcoin Talk community. I would hope that legendaries and heroes could start such topics, and in fact many of them have done so, and they have created tutorials. The problem seems to be the unwillingness of many members to read the topcs.

There is also a personal interest in this project. I would like to read comments about life in politically unstable countries. I would also like to hear comments about other economic problems - for example, how people are handling the situation in Greece after the rape and theft of their national assets by the European Union.

Scalability discussons can be a bit difficult. One has to consider the reason for the creation of Bitcoin, and its possible place in a future world economy. I believe that received wisdom is not accurate, and this distorts the views on many people. Informed heated discussion about this would be good, but it may be difficult to find informed posters.
4011  Other / Beginners & Help / How many beginners make money trading in Bitcoin? on: October 11, 2018, 10:46:25 AM
I've seen several members claiming to make a living by trading Bitcoin, and, whilst this is possible, it does require quite a degree of sophistication in my opinion. Always remember that for you to make a profit, somebody else has to make a loss, and the odds are even further against you, as there are two lots of trading fees that will be taken by the exchange. and there is probably a price spread to consider as well.

The price of Bitcoin seems to be manipulated at the moment, and many statistical changes seem to be triggered by major investors, rather than an indication of a price trend as a result of general market valuation. So, given that the odds seem to be stacked against you, I wonder how many beginners or new members are able to read the market accurately enough to make a profit from trading.
4012  Other / Meta / Re: I'm thinking of running a topic starting contest for non-english speakers. on: October 11, 2018, 10:04:59 AM
The plan is to work on the translation in the Fit to Talk project - rather like the post created by Dr Gomez. You only need English language speakers to work with the original topic creator. Google translate can work for an initial translation, and then the results can be improved where they are inaccurate or misleading.

I realise that most of my merit awarding is no longer general, and this was the motivation for starting this project. I'm particularly interested in helping Flying Hellfish in his efforts to turn the political board into a "mature" discussion arena.

The manipulation of the poll was one of my concerns, and I must check to see if voting can be attributed to member names.
4013  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Brexit - Why do they call a second referendum a "people's vote" on: October 11, 2018, 09:52:16 AM
There are some interesting comments in ths thread.

re: The fishing industry - if we stop allowing European fisherman to catch our fish, and then sell them back to us, catching them ourselves will boost UK employment, and save us the cost of paying foreign fisherman to catch our fish, and the unemployment benefits paid to our own fishermen.

If you consider the manipulation by the governement who sought to control the referendum vote, and the number of immigrants seeking to increase their communities, then the real British vote woud have been a far larger percentage. One example is the failed immigrant banker Gina Miller, who was educated at Roedean ( the girl's equivalent of Eton), and has received over £1 million in payment from Soros. If you consider all the other example, you start to realise the extent of the problem.

The vacillation by the current remainer government, whilst appearing to be incompetent, is in reality quite skilful. It is continuing the policy of transferring the UK national and private assets and wealth into the hands of the Eton?Oxford elite who control the EU. A deep state inspired referendum would allow them to extended the wasted two year transition period that is coming to an end. and continue their destruction of the social fabric of Britain.
4014  Other / Meta / I'm thinking of running a topic starting contest for non-english speakers. on: October 11, 2018, 09:15:36 AM
I'm having real problems in discovering meritable posts, and I'd like to run a discussion starting contest for members who don't have English as their first language. Participants would need to create a good discussion topic in their own language,  and I/We will help them to translate this into English for them to post in the Bitcoin Talk forum. I will guarantee at least 5 merits if the post is accepted and taken through to final posting. Once 5 threads have been started, then I will open a poll for the community to decide which one is the best, and the winner will receive an additional 25 merits.

Topics should be suitable for posting on one of the following boards -

Beginners
Political
Serious Discussion
I may also consider Bitcoin discussion and Technical.

Topics will need to be fairly serious and of good quality, and examples would be

El Petro and its impact on Venezuela and the world economy
The use of crypto currencies in countries suffering from hyperinflation
Your early experiences with Bitcoin
Crypto currency as an alternative to bonds as the stock market collapses.
Everyday living in a country with a failed fiat currency.
Crypto-currencies as a means of wealth transfer durng migration.
and many other similar topics that I am sure you can use as a basis for discussion.

What do BT members think of the idea, and would you change any of the suggestions?
4015  Other / Meta / Re: How to upload a photo on bitcointalk.org? on: October 11, 2018, 08:42:17 AM
A lot of images are a complete waste of readers time and bandwidth. If you really must post an image, then please make sure it is relevant, and not just something that would be added to a kindergarten book. Posting the link to a photo is often quite sufficient, and it avoids the stupid quoters who have to clog up the thread with multiple copies of the image.
4016  Other / Meta / Re: TMAN's Level up challenge.-- UPDATED... on: October 11, 2018, 08:37:29 AM
>..<

I was going to give you a couple of merits for one of your posts, but I have the trading boards on ignore, so I wasn't able to do this. Many merit sources have been forced to put whole boards as well as members on ignore. If we didn't do this, then we wouldn't have the time to look through the remaining posts to award merits. Hopefully a source who is active on the trading boards will find you.
4017  Other / Meta / Re: Can we talk about the rampant account trading in the local forums? on: October 11, 2018, 07:51:02 AM
There isn't much point in showing trust in the marketplace if accounts can be sold. "Caveat emptor" is still the watchword if members can buy reputation.
4018  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My Guide For Getting Merit! on: October 11, 2018, 07:39:34 AM
The most important thing if you are chasing merit is to stay of the awarders ignore lists. I'm sorry, you have failed at this fence.
4019  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A Rookie Question (Sorry) on: October 11, 2018, 07:36:34 AM
Isn't a confirmation the addition of a new block to the longest chain, and therefore confirming that the block, and the transactions within it, are a part of the permanent blockchain. Validation is the checking of transactions to ensure that they do not break any of the rules, and that they are derived from spendable funds. A block that contains an invalid transaction can render that block invalid, and cause sunsequent blocks to be built on the previous block. This shows the danger to miners who don't check for valid transactions when building blocks.
4020  Other / Meta / Re: Can we talk about the rampant account trading in the local forums? on: October 11, 2018, 07:18:08 AM

What could be cool for one week is, block all duplicate IPs to log in the forum  Cheesy

Please don't do that - don't forget the Gemini members here who use alts to suit their mood of ther moment.

The easy answer is to ban account sales. At best, a bought account will be used for sig spamming. at worst it will be used for cheating and fraud.
